Title: Last Action Hero
Post by: Dr Dutch on September 02, 2011, 11:42:47 AM
Yesterday I saw the 1993 movie Last Action Hero after about 15 yrs. I remember the critics were very bad back then, but it was actually very good: lots of inside jokes, self irony, fun cameo's.
Anyone got an opinion about that one ?

Loved it.

Never saw why people thought it was so bad.

I believe it was Arnold's first flop... Look at the timeframe. It was basically predetermined to get bad reviews and fail so the Brad Pitt types could take over hollywood.

It was his first after T2 so expectations were pretty high, would maybe explain the bad reviews.

underrated and the critics just didn't get it was a piss take.

It's a good film and has its moments and excitements. But the kid is annoying and when they enter the real world it quickly starts to feel that the movie should end already.

i think they over did it on the advertisement of the movie... i think they were even going to launch a Rocket into space to promote the movie

it was pretty good. not quite up to the standards of his shakespearean-esque performance in t2. good nonetheless  :)

Thought it was excellent. Guess it was over the critics heads on some things.

to keep it short, it's a terrific action comedy. A buddy movie between the hardened hero and the naive soul. Good effects and scenes and purposely stereotypical and well casted characters.

just didn't get the movie attendance and Im guessing it had it though with another favorite movie of mine, Jurassic Park coming out the same year

That fucking kid.

Yeah, a bit annoying. But it doesn't take away from the fact the film was still enjoyable.

I liked it , it wasn't a great commercial success or critical one either.

Define Brad Pitt type.

Sorry, but Tree of Life is a better movie than Arnold could even dream of making.

I know I'm getting flamed for that one. Oh well.

I actually think Pitt is a really good actor and gets underrated because of his looks.  He's no Brando or anything but he's better than most these days.

I specified Brad Pitt, but I'm really speaking more about the overall pussification of the US by Hollywood and the like.

I agree , I think he's an underated actor as well , was great in Interview with a Vampire , was great as Jesse James

It flopped because it opened against Jurassic Park.

I though it was a fun film.  Fairly bold in it's way too, trying to make a kid-appropriate action film which had a few irl issues like a single parent family, adolescent alienation, real world death, and which wouldn't be too Disney for adults.  I suspect a lot of Arnold fans felt like he was insulting them though.  They went looking for a shoot-em-up, which was how it was advertised, and wound up at a sermon about the absurdity of action movies.  Backlash.  Woody Allen suffered the same from Stardust Memories, making fun of fans for liking what had been previously presented.

Yep, great scene.  Most of the audience simply didn't get the joke.

The best character in the movies was Benedict. He always had a different eye.

Precisely i checked the numbers and Jurassic Park opened like a couple of days before this. Lol! Only real Arnold fans made it to this one.
