I'm sure, the reading audience, being the successful Getbiggers that they are, have had to fire people from their gym, maid service, laundry service, etc..at some point.
Did you have mental anguish? Did it hinder your contest prep?
-
Lol. Yep. Hurt me more than them. I favor the "The restricted budget that our contracts force on us means I have to scale back to a bare bones staff. Appreciate your help but I have to let you go." approach. Sounds better than "You're lazy and incompetent and I'm sick of having to pay you for the privilege of looking at your stupid fat face every goddamned day while you screw everything up. So you can just fuck off and go serve frenchfries somewhere."

Yes, about three years ago, its a shitty feeling, but dude was taking money under the table which should have been coming to our company. he started crying.
I was very CLOSE to firing someone last week but other managers asked me to give them a second chance which I did but I warned them and told them if that same infraction happened they will not be coming back, also made them repeat my words in a staff meeting the following week for dramatic purposes!

Yes, I work in a family business (HVAC manufacturing), and (don't laugh) I also own and operate, with my wife, two small ladies-only gyms in Egypt. AND I also work as a graduate student assistant on campus in conjunction to my phd

LOL nah, when and if I ever finish the phd, now THAT will be an accomplishment. Its one of the hardest things I've ever had to do.
Next month I have a pretty big milestone in the program, have to take an 8 hour exam and it determines whether I move on to the next phase in the program or whether they kick me out LOL .... No pressure!

Comps!? Just keep yapping, as you do here on Getbig. Spread the Big Ach around so much that they have almost no negative criticism. Academia is vaunted, but it is also inbred. Take advantage of that congenital nonsense. ;)

Fired someone this morning. I thoroughly enjoy it.

My Brother wanted to start a company or have the specific job in which he was hired to fire people...
"You're Fired" (throwing a paper airplane at the person).
"Sorry that you were sick yesterday, and your newborn has the Flu, but you are fired."
-

The thing about it, for me anyway, is I'm one of the hardest working people I know. I try to lead by example. So if you slack off, purposefully, I have no problem kicking you out.

I'd say in most instances the people I've had to let go, have actually fired themselves by their own actions.
I don't feel any empathy in those situations.

Same here.

Yeah same here, people in this day in age wanna get fired from the way I see it, unless it's some arbitrary shit swearing in the office or something.

Years ago I was fooled for a long time by an employee that was an alcoholic. I'm not much of a drinker, had never been around that type of behavior, and couldn't really spot the signs. I gave him way too many chances. He abused every chance we gave him. In the end the family even went as far as to lie and cover for him.
Never made that mistake again.

I went through the same thing when I was doing my phd, but unfortunately, I got terminated by the school

Hiring managers we trust, email phone Skype email phone Skype email phone Skype LOL
My wife and I started it when we were still living there so we set the foundation before we moved.
I'm sorry you got terminated, what happened?
-
So I have to ask do you think going into a field of work where you pretty much have to fire people on a weekly or monthly basis is a good idea. I'm planning on getting involved in safty shit in industry, and apparently it's a great job minus you have to shit on and fire people constantly. I feel my getbig experience will at least land me an interview.

I imagine any position of authority will put you in something like that, maybe not weekly LOL.... Getbig experience definitely helps!

I was doing my phd in English, as for phd students in English major at the school I went to, everyone was required to pass an academic evaluation at the end of the first academic year, which was called Qualified Portfolio. It was basically a collection of a student's research papers, essays, and other writings. But the critical part of the portfolio was that every student was required to write an article which was supposed to submit to a professional journal for publication. Unfortunately, the committee did not think my paper had the value worth to be published after they reviewed my portfolio, so, they terminated my phd program.
:'( :'(

That sucks. but submitting a professional journal article after first year is fucking hardcore! I mean, you're just getting into the swing of things there, surprised thats when they did it.

Good man! Glad to hear things are working out. The phd system is hard man, much harder than I expected, I greatly under estimated what it was gonna be like before I started, just trying to survive it now.
-
I fired your mom.
-
There's some pretty tough pro-employee labour laws where I am.
Still - I've had to fire 4 people in 13 years of being an employer here. I get them in the office and put 2 things in front of them. The first is a chasiers check and the second is a letter of resignation in their name.
I tell them that they are going to be fired but I would like to give them the opportunity to resign first, I also tell them they get the check if they resign but not if I fire them.
In all cases, they have just signed the letter straight away and walked away with the money.
It's not pleasant but generally speaking you only fire someone if they are shit anyway. So it's usually a relief to everyone of the other employees that remains anyway.
-
Except when you're on the receiving end of that speech and you know that you're being fed a line of bullshit.
Yeah, it's part bullshit but only the part where I didn't straight up say it's their fault for costing me more than they earn. I'm not dealing with the brightest sparks, being in the building trades, so it would be cruel and pointless to tell someone off for being an idiot.
Don't go thinking I'm running some massive company, YB. A 6-7 year employee has stopped coming in by his choice so for the moment I work alone. Probably going to keep it that way if I can handle the workload. It's so much nicer than having to deal with other people's crap everyday.
Best worker excuse I've ever heard on a Mon morning (not my worker, but too gold): "I noticed my pet snake escaped and I have to stay home until I find him."
Runner up: "I have a boil in my ass crack and I can't walk."
-
Except when you're on the receiving end of that speech and you know that you're being fed a line of bullshit.
The only reason someone gives one of those speeches when they fire someone is because they are weak willed.
Fact is, you are firing someone. It's going to piss them off. Any bullshit speech you give them is only done with the intention of making yourself feel better, it sure as fuck wont make them feel better and it just makes you look a twat.
Sit them down, no small talk, no 'how is the family', no 'I hate to do this'. Sit them down, tell them straight away why they are in that room with you and what the deal is. For sure, THEY can ask for specifics but you should not beat around the bush.
There is no need to tell them anything other than that they are being dismissed and the terms of that dismissal. That's your lead into any discussion and any attempts to sugar coat it are misguided.

When I was let go, I had received a phone call about 10min prior from another employee that was out of the same depot I was. He said he'd been let go and if I could grab some papers for him he would appreciate it, adding that the boss was at the depot waiting for me. Then and there I knew I was going to be let go too, but why is a whole other story.
I showed up, saw the cars in the lot and again I knew. I walked in the office and saw a 2nd manager (knowing when 2 are present it's for legal reasons) it was confirmed. I went to the bathroom and as I came out my boss said "Have a seat." I told him 'Cut to the chase, I'm laid off aren't I?' and he continued and stressed for me to sit down again. As I sat down I told him 'I asked you once, don't sugarcoat anything or continue to piss me off me and betray me, I don't have a job as I walk out of this office, right?'
Not all employees take it that way though. Of the 4 of us laid off that day, one didn't know any better, I took it as I was given, another knew he was toast because I called him with a heads up and the other one (the worst employee of the lot, go figure) went ballistic.

Casino?

I'll admit to that. It sucks giving someone the axe, especially when they're not a rotten person, they're just natural born hopeless.
