Title: Home gyms - Which machine would you choose?
Post by: el numero uno on October 16, 2011, 09:29:17 AM
1) $250
(http://www.melbournefitnessequipment.com.au/avactis-images/MarcyMCB346bench.jpg)

2) $350
(http://img2.mlstatic.com/s_MEC_v_O_f_9305072_3892.jpg)

I have a doubt about the lat pulldowns on those machines... max weight for the lat pulldowns in #1 is 100 lbs, in the gym I attend, I use around 18 plates but I have no idea how much the plates weight. If they weight 10lbs then #1 is useless for lats, but if they weight 5 lbs then I'm fine.

# 2 has 9 plates but the owner doesn't know how much they weight. Maybe the weight is too light for other exercises as well?

#1 is cheaper but buying the bar and the weight it would be kinda the same amount of money.

Considering you don't have any other gym equipment in your house, which one would you choose?

1. since u can add weight.

#2 is a piece of shit the weights are nothing. you can probably bench it and do the lat pulldown with 1 hand without much effort.

neither of them seems high quality though. that lat pulldown on #1 will probably break if you add some decent amount of weight on it.

Neither, #1 is going to be shakey with any type of real weight on it. You can use the lat pull down, but they get rickety with anything over #75 on them.

#2 is solider, but the weight stack is probably around #100 too, and add on plates for those machines are expensive.

I'd hang on, and see if I could find a used power rack or half rack with lat pulldown, bench and bar off Craigslist or Ebay. Even a cheap rack would be loads safer than that bench and provide way more options than the all in one machine.

Yeah, that was exactly my concern about #2. I was thinking that maybe I could put a dumbell above the plates but I wasn't convinced.

#1 is cool but benching with a bar gives me some wrist pain, it's annoying. In the gym I use mainly a machine, the smith machine and dumbells. So if the lat pulldowns in # 1 is useless (and it looks like that), I better just buy and adjustable bench and use dumbells.

No offence taken. I'm not out to impress anyone with the way it looks. It's designed to not just get you big but strong as fuck.

I have a Squat Rack, Dumbbells that can go to 150, Bench Press/Incline, Adjustable Bench, Lat Pulldown with Low Cable Row and Cables, Chinup Bar outside, Dip Bar Outside, Tricep Bar, 2 EZ-Curl Bars, Leg Extension and Leg Curl Machine.

I find that there is nothing else I need at the moment.

Well, I think I won't buy anything at the moment. I'll see if I can find a good deal with a power rack though.

All I've ever really needed is a good cage and a shitload of heavy weights.

If you are going to get an apparatus with a lat pulldown, make sure it has something to fasten your legs. I had to get creative.

Right now, you would not believe how creative I've gotten.. and guess what? It still works.

I always liked that big ass yellow home gym system that Cutler used to endorse. It was heavy duty and seemed to be built for weight and leverage. If I had to buy one, I guess I would go with that, but I'd still have a cage (with a chinning bar)

Bump.

So I find out the #1's weight capacity is 400 lbs. Kinda poor quality I guess.

http://www.ukfitnesssupplies.co.uk/productdetail.asp?productcatalogue=MCB346-110kg

But, I found this other bench

# 3

I emailed the company and they told me the weight capacity is 600 lbs (including weights and user).
So I guess it's better, it's also cheaper than #1 and the owner also will send me an ez bar.

It looks like a good buy... what do you think?

It's way too expensive for me right now (I'm still a student)  :'(. It costs around $1000. I can get #3 for $200

Get two dumbells or join your university gym and invest the money in steroids, you'll build more muscle than with these crappy machines.

Waste of money, better get testosterone for 200$ and do pull-ups and push-ups on the nearest playground, you'll look better.

All joking aside, I just want some equipment in my house. Some days I can't go to the gym, however I usually have a lot of time the weekends but the weekends the gyms are closed here. So nowadays I go to the gym 2-1 times per week. I already have 2 dumbells and I use them to train arms and sometimes shoulders but I want more alternatives regarding exercises.

Have you looked at craigslist, garage sales and gyms that go out of business? You might find some good deals there.

Yep, the bench I want to buy is used. I've been looking for a used pwer rack but I didn't find anything. The price for a new one is $1000.

PD: All the 3 machines/benchs I listed here are used and actually they are "cheap" compared to the local prices.

If you're patient, check slickdeals  the Bowflex 552 dumbbells go on sale about 4x a year and you get them around $200.  The ones that cost $700 and go up to 90 go on sale twice a year for half price.

craigslist always has tons of used weight.

I built my chinup bar at home depot ---- there's always a better way than the Marcy bench.....

Yeah, I've been reading negativy comments about them. But #3 is not a marcy. I want to know if it's better or is the same shit. Apparently the weight capacity is 200 lbs+ than a marcy bench. But it may be still a crappy bench, I don't know. And I'm not in the USA so my options are limited. I just use sites like Ebay which here are mercadolibre.com and others sites like that.

In addition, the width of stands looks to be right where I'd put my hands on the bar.  I had a bench like that growing up, and I always had to go too wide or narrow because of those stupid things.

seriously, it's a total waste of money, just go to a gym or get a simple bench for 50$ and train with your dumbells.

Actually I've been training for almost 6 years. I just want some home equipment only for the days I can't go to the gym. Your last advice seems appropiate, thanks.
