i am the same way. esp with delts..i believe in feeling the muscle working. this is just throwing weights around. i think his joints will pay in the long run :)

x2, controlled movements all the way, only as much weight as you can move with control.
Everything else will only lead to injuries.

I used to throw around heavy weights until I realized I was stronger than everyone in the gym (and that everyone online lies about their lifts). Strength is relatively easy to build up until a certain point because you can get sick, stop training or even go off PEDs and still have brutal retard strength.
Now it's all moderately heavy weights with controlled reps. The mind-muscle connection is way more important if you're lifting respectable weights.

I see these 250lb monsters (lean of course) do side laterals with 25 pounds lol ... just to give an example
At the beginning fine do it for a few years then with time you understand that you are just building your ego since you are an attention seeker, unless that's the reason why you go to the gym .. to show off then it's a different story

the only time I train heavy is when I have to go off for a few weeks
like right now
I do less volume and I keep the weights heavy for less sets and reps
seems to help retain muscle better than if I continued with the supersets I do when I am on a cycle

Yes, training heavy (with sense, of course!) works better for "natties", if you are off you can't build muscle on light weights, different story when you're on gear.

I still still lose muscle but I am only off for 2 months, usually I can retain pretty much everything but month 3 and 4 off gear are a disaster and usually by month 5 I look like Fatpanda

in the new flex phil heath states that most guys can't do side laterals with 25lb db with a 2 sec pause at the top for reps...makes sense with great form how many of us truely can? sure i can throw up 70's or 80's but why? besides looking stupid it does nothing for muscle. the shoulder joint is to delicate.not worth the risk of injury
