New Book Disputes Obama Administration's Account of Bin Laden Raid
Updated: Friday, 21 Oct 2011, 1:40 PM PDT
Published : Friday, 21 Oct 2011, 1:40 PM PDT
(NewsCore) - A new book based on a series of interviews with the Navy SEALs involved in the mission to kill Osama bin Laden claims to directly contradict the Obama administration's depiction of the operation, The Washington Examiner reported Friday.
"SEAL Target Geronimo: The Inside Story of the Mission to Kill Osama bin Laden," by former SEAL commander Chuck Pfarrer, claims to tell the true story of the successful raid to kill the terror chief on May 2.
According to a press release, the book takes "readers on the helicopter flight over the wall that leads deep into the terrorist lair and describing what it looked, sounded and smelled like as the bullets flew."
The book also takes issue with the Obama administration's characterization of the mission.
"In a hasty effort to claim victory and make political haste, administration aides changed their stories several times," the release said. "Their leaks made SEAL Team Six look ineffective and clumsy."
The book claims the SEALs landed on the roof of bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, rather than on the ground as the administration has stated. Pfarrer also writes that the mission took only 90 seconds, a far shorter time than the 40-minute raid the White House has described.
The 240-page book will be released on Nov. 8 by St. Martin's Press.
Pfarrer has written one previous work of nonfiction, three novels, and several produced screenplays, most notably the 1997 box office hit "The Jackal" starring Bruce Willis and Richard Gere.

Chuck Pfarrer's book, scheduled for publication Nov. 8, contains new details about the mission that killed Bin Laden that challenge the official White House version of events.
Hollywood's interest in the killing of Osama Bin Laden is about to be put to another test. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that agents for the new book SEAL Target Geronimo: The Inside Story of the Mission to Kill Osama Bin Laden, by former SEAL Team Six commander Chuck Pfarrer, will be in Los Angeles on Friday shopping film and television rights. •Osama Bin LadenThe book, scheduled for publication by St. Martin’s Press on Nov. 8, is full of new details about the SEAL Team Six mission that killed Bin Laden. Publication of the book, which is attracting attention among terrorism and national security experts in Washington, was reportedly delayed for several months so it could be cleared by government officials.

Pfarrer, author of the best-selling Warrior Soul: The Memoir of a Navy SEAL, is said to have gotten a firsthand account of the raid from SEAL members actually involved in the operation. Crucially, sources who are familiar with the book say that SEAL Target Geronimo paints a daring and dramatic account of the raid that is at odds with the official White House version.
Pfarrer writes that the SEALs entered Bin Laden’s home from the roof and killed him in the first 90 seconds of the raid. The official account has Bin Laden dying near the end of an approximately 40-minute raid, after hiding in his bedroom as the SEALS fought their way up from the ground floor.

Pfarrer also provides new information on the weeks and months leading up to the raid and relates the history of the Navy’s elite and secretive SEAL Team Six. SEAL Target Geronimo pins the blame for Bin Laden’s exposure on Ayman Zawahiri, his second-in-command, who repeatedly used the same compromised courier to communicate with the Al Qaeda leader. Pfarrer also explores the lessons the SEALs learned from their mission against Somali pirates that helped them in the Bin Laden operation, and he delves into the history and operations of the Joint Special Operations Command, the secretive military organization in charge of the military’s special operations forces.
SEAL Target Geronimo is the latest in a series of book and film projects about the elite Navy special operations forces generally and the Bin Laden raid specifically. The Hurt Locker team of director Kathryn Bigelow and writer Mark Boal are making a movie about the raid for Sony. New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd wrote that Bigelow and Boal got “top-level access to the most classified mission in history" in putting together the script.
STORY: Bin Laden Filmmakers Kathryn Bigelow, Mark Boal Shoot Back at Republican Congressman
Sony is said to be reconsidering its announced release date of Oct. 12, 2012, meaning the still-untitled film would not hit theaters on the eve of the Nov. 6, 2012, presidential election. Bigelow has not yet started shooting the movie.
Another Navy SEALs movie, Act of Valor, is scheduled to hit theaters in February from Relativity Media. That film, made with the cooperation of the military and featuring actual soldiers, doesn't specifically deal with the Bin Laden killing.
Another book, SEAL Team Six: Memoirs of an Elite Navy SEAL Sniper by Howard Wasdin and Stephen Templin, which fortuitously came out just weeks after Bin Laden’s death, immediately jumped up Amazon’s sales rankings and landed on The New York Times best-seller list. And in September, IDW published Code Word: Geronimo, a graphic novel by Dale Dye, the retired marine captain and noted technical adviser on many Hollywood war movies.

Osama bin Laden 'was dead in 90 seconds'
A controversial new account of the killing of Osama bin Laden has challenged the official story of the how the al-Qaeda leader died during the raid on his Pakistani hideout in May.
By Jon Swaine, New York
9:41PM GMT 03 Nov 2011
Chuck Pfarrer, a former commander of US Navy SEAL Team Six, whose members carried out the assault, claims bin Laden was shot dead almost instantly rather than killed in a 45-minute firefight.
Claiming to have interviewed several men involved in the raid, Pfarrer also contradicted the official account of how the SEAL team landed and how one of their Black Hawk helicopters crashed.
"The SEALs entered the building after being deposited on the roof by the lead helicopter, not from the ground," Pfarrer said in a statement about the book.
"Only minutes after bin Laden was dead did the lead helicopter, heading for a landing spot, lose altitude and sink, tail-first, into the large walled enclosure east of the main house." Pfarrer explains that if the SEALs had been forced to climb stairs to reach bin Laden, as has been officially claimed, he would have had enough warning to arm and effectively defend himself.
"Bin Laden was dead within 90 seconds of the beginning of the raid, not after an extended firefight," Pfrarrer said. "Four suppressed rounds were fired".

see - how the FCK can obama make this kinda mistake?
Who mistakes 90 seconds for a 45 minute gun battle? ???
In 45 minutes, you'd have half the paki army at that sandlot helping out.
Obama straight lied there.

I don't see how someone can interview the Seals when they don't even know who was involved in it. Those records are pretty confidential. Even former Seals wouldn't have the intel
Sounds to me like this book is a joke....but in any event, it makes no real difference in the overall outcome

Revealed: How Obama was playing golf until 20 minutes before Navy SEALs began mission

In the official photograph, he looked every inch the commander in chief. Strain etched on his face, Barack Obama watched as the raid to kill Osama bin Laden played out on a television in front of him. According to a new book, however, the President was not nearly that engaged – and was actually playing golf until 20 minutes before the operation began in earnest.Only then did he down his clubs and return to the White House to watch what he later trumpeted as a great success of his presidency. A new book claims the official account was

New Book By Former SEAL Tells What Really Happened During The Abbottabad Raid
Robert Johnson | Nov. 7, 2011, 5:48 AM | 4,190 | 31
Image: Daily Mail
In his recently released book, former Navy SEAL commander Chuck Pfarrer sheds some light on the May 2 raid at Osama bin Laden's Abbottabad compound.
Speaking to SEAL Team 6 members, Pfarrer clears up a few misconceptions (via The Daily Mail):
Up until 20 minutes before the raid President Obama was playing golf. Pfarrer says this was for the president to distance himself if the mission went bad.
The helicopter that went down in the compound crashed due to an electrical failure, not thin desert air as previously reported.
None of the SEALs ever said "For God and country" when they burst into bin Laden's room. Bin Laden's wife only screamed "No, no, don't do this...it's not him."
Bin Laden was also referred to as Bert, not just Geronimo, and Ayman al-Zawahiri was called Ernie, a reference to the Sesame Street characters.
SEAL Team 6 members say they absolutely would have captured bin Laden if he'd given himself up, but he pushed his wife at them and went for a weapon next to his bed. It was not a "kill mission."
Twelve shots were fired during the entire mission. Four in bin Laden's bedroom. The first round just missed bin Laden's face. The second hit his wife's calf. Two 5.56mm rounds then hit the man, one in his chest, the second in the head 90 seconds after the raid began.
Each SEAL was carrying sawn-off M4 rifles.
Obama did ask who "took out Osama" and the team answered "We all did, sir. It was all of us."
The SEALs chose to speak out after being labeled murderers that engaged in a 'kill mission'.
The men were also disappointed that bin Laden's death was announced so quickly, giving other al Qaeda leaders time to scramble.
From The Daily Mail:
Mr Pfarrer also said the President's announcement of the 'intentional' killing was understandable but nonetheless disappointing. Mr Pfarrer told the Sunday Times: 'There isn’t a politician in the world who could resist trying to take credit for getting Bin Laden but it devalued the ''intel'' and gave time for every other Al-Qaeda leader to scurry to another bolthole.
'The men who did this and their valorous act deserve better. It’s a pretty shabby way to treat these guys,' Pfarrer said.
The original mission was planned for April 30. Called Neptune's Spear that date was scratched due to bad weather.
The rifle bin Laden reached for in his bedroom is now mounted on the wall of the Seal team room in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Correcting the ‘fairy tale’: A SEAL’s account of how Osama bin Laden really died
The Daily Caller ^ | November 7, 2011 | Vince Coglianese
Forget whatever you think you know about the night Osama bin Laden was killed. According to a former Navy SEAL who claims to have the inside track, the mangled tales told of that historic night have only now been corrected.
“It became obvious in the weeks evolving after the mission that the story that was getting put out there was not only untrue, but it was a really ugly farce of what did happen,” said Chuck Pfarrer, author of Seal Target Geronimo: The Inside Story of the Mission to Kill Osama Bin Laden.
In an extensive interview with The Daily Caller, Pfarrer gave a detailed account of why he believes the record needed to be corrected, and why he set out to share the personal stories of the warriors who penetrated bin Laden’s long-secret compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.
In August the New Yorker delivered a riveting blow-by-blow of the SEALs’ May 1, 2011 raid on bin Laden’s hideaway. In that account, later reported to lack contributions from the SEALs involved, readers are taken through a mission that began with a top-secret helicopter crashing and led to a bottom-up assault of the Abbottabad compound.
Freelancer Nicholas Schmidle wrote that the SEALs had shot and blasted their way up floor-by-floor, finally cornering the bewildered Al-Qaida leader:
“The Al Qaeda chief, who was wearing a tan shalwar kameez and a prayer cap on his head, froze; he was unarmed. ‘There was never any question of detaining or capturing him—it wasn’t a split-second decision. No one wanted detainees,’ the special-operations officer told me. (The Administration maintains that had bin Laden immediately surrendered he could have been taken alive.) Nine years, seven months, and twenty days after September 11th, an American was a trigger pull from ending bin Laden’s life. The first round, a 5.56-mm. bullet, struck bin Laden in the chest. As he fell backward, the SEAL fired a second round into his head, just above his left eye.”
Chuck Pfarrer rejects almost all of that story.
“The version of the 45-minute firefight, and the ground-up assault, and the cold-blooded murder on the third floor — that wasn’t the mission,” Pfarrer told TheDC.
“I had to try and figure out, well, look: Why is this story not what I’m hearing? Why is it so off and how is it so off?” he recounted. “One of the things I sort of determined was, OK, somebody was told ‘one of the insertion helicopters crashed.’ OK, well that got muddled to ‘a helicopter crashed on insertion.’”
The helicopters, called “Stealth Hawks,” are inconspicuous machines concealing cutting-edge technology. They entered the compound as planned, with “Razor 1″ disembarking its team of SEALs on the roof of the compound — not on the ground level. There was no crash landing. That wouldn’t occur until after bin Laden was dead.
Meanwhile, “Razor 2″ took up a hovering position so that its on-board snipers, some of whom had also participated in the sea rescue of Maersk Alabama captain Richard Phillips, had a clear view of anyone fleeing the compound.
The SEALs then dropped down from the roof, immediately penetrated the third floor, and hastily encountered bin Laden in his room. He was not standing still.
“He dived across the king-size bed to get at the AKSU rifle he kept by the headboard,” wrote Pfarrer in his book. It was at that moment, a mere 90 seconds after the SEALs first set foot on the roof, that two American bullets shattered bin Laden’s chest and head, killing a man who sought violence to the very end.
President Obama stepped up to a podium in the East Room of the White House that night to announce bin Laden’s death. That rapid announcement, explained Pfarrer, posed a major threat to U.S. national security.
“There was a choice that night,” Pfarrer told TheDC. “There was a choice to keep the mission secret.” America, Pfarrer explained, could have left things alone for “weeks or months … even though there was evidence left on the ground there … and use the intelligence and finish off al-Qaida.”
But Obama’s announcement, he said, “rendered moot all of the intelligence that was gathered from the nexus of al-Qaida. The computer drives, the hard drives, the videocasettes, the CDs, the thumb drives, everything. Before that could even be looked through, the political decision was made to take credit for the operation.”
And in the days that followed, as politicians sought to thrust their identities into the details of the bin Laden kill, the tale began to grow out of control, said Pfarrer.
“The president made a statement, and as far as that goes, that was fine, that was the mission statement,” he explained. “But, soon after … politicians began leaking information from every orifice. And it was like a game of Chinese telephone. These guys didn’t know what they were talking about. Very few of them had even seen the video feed.”
Pfarrer suggests that much of the misinformation was likely born out of operational ignorance, even among those sitting in the White House.
“One of the things that happened was that there were only a handful of people who know about this mission,” he said. “On the civilian side, there were only a handful of people in the situation room who were watching the drone feed. They were looking at the roof of a building taken from a rotating aircraft at 35,000 feet.”
“None of those guys, not a single one of them, had a background in special operations, with the exception of General Webb who was sitting there running a laptop,” Pfarrer went on. “No one knew or could even imagine what was going on inside the building. They didn’t know.”
“There was an alternative feed going to CIA headquarters where Leon Panetta sat there with the communications brevity codes [a guide sheet for the mission's radio lingo] in his lap and a SEAL off-screen by his side to be able to tell him what was going on,” he said. “But these guys, none of them, really knew what they were looking at.”
As the media raised more questions, officials gave more answers.
Whether or not bin Laden resisted ultimately developed into a barrage of murky official and unofficial explanations in the days following. And statements from as high as then-CIA Director Leon Panetta offered confirmation that the endeavor was a “kill mission.”
Pfarrer dismisses that assertion.
“An order to go in and murder someone in their house is not a lawful order,” explained Pfarrer, who maintains that bin Laden would have been captured had he surrendered. “Unlike the Germans in World War II, if you’re a petty officer, a chief petty officer, a naval officer, and you’re giving an order to murder somebody, that’s an unlawful order.”
Pfarrer also suggests some of the emerging claims were simply self-aggrandizing “fairy tales.”
“The story they tried to tell — it’s preposterous. And the CIA tried to jump in. About mid-June the CIA tried to jump into the car and drive the victory lap. There’s this whole stuff about the CIA guy joining the operation, the gallant interpreter — he couldn’t even fast rope!” exclaimed Pfarrer, referring to a technique for descending from an airborne helicopter.
“There’s this fairy tale about him walking out of the compound during the operation to tell crowds of Pakistanis to go home and everything’s OK.”
Pfarrer tried to put this in perspective: “Do you mean that during the middle of this military operation at night, with hovering helicopters over this odd house in this neighborhood, that people came out of their houses to ask what’s going on, instead of [remaining] huddled in their basement?”
“And I think that there were so many of these leaks that were incorrect, the administration couldn’t walk them all back,” Pfarrer explained. “And so, in the middle of May, they froze everything.”
It was that freeze-out that left Chuck Pfarrer with nowhere to turn for the real story but the SEALs themselves.
Seal Target Geronimo delivers an account of the night Osama bin Laden died with a level of detail unlike anything previously reported. Pfarrer bills the story as “absolutely factual.”
“That’s the other thing. I’m prepared for the White House to say, you know, ‘this is full of inaccuracies,’ et cetera,” offered Pfarrer. He told TheDC that in order to protect American interests, his book is “full of names that are made up, and it is full of bases that are not quite where they really should be.”
“But the timeline of my events,” he cautions, “and the manner in which it happened is 100 percent accurate. And they’ll know that.”

executed bin laden

the thing that makes me uncomfortable about the article is the part where the military wanted to keep it secret and use the intel to dismantle Al qaida but the Obama admin wanted to go public with it right away. if there is any truth to this that pisses me off, and it would seem that it is more important to the Obama administration to be "perceived as effective" as opposed to "being effective".

The MOST effective course of action would have been to capture OBL and milk him for intel.
This has to be the first time in history that you'd kill such a wealth of knowledge instead of milking him for info before hanging him in his cell.
We're in a 30-year 'war on terror' and you catch the TOP GUY and you don't interrogate him? Bullshit.
Obama did this for political gain. Sun Tzu would have captured the leader, told the world he was killed in battle, and pumped him for intel for the next 5 years. Then again, OBL would then produce the US govt paystubs for 911, so....

i guess i do understand the decision to kill on sight as we could have faced a lot of civilian deaths by acts of terrorism if we would have put him through a trial that would inevitably drag on as opposed to him getting shot and killed. i think its a tough call.

What a jerkoff.

I wonder how they will portray this in the movie?
It is good they took Osama out. He wasn't going to talk. Holder would have probably put him on trial on US soil. It would have been a circus. Glad he's dead.

Dead Men Don’t Talk: US Navy Seals Destroyed to Cover Up Washington’s Bin Laden Execution Hoax?
Finian Cunningham
Global Research
Aug 8, 2011
The wiping out of 30 US special forces in the Chinook helicopter crash in Afghanistan comes at a time when Washington’s official version of how it carried out the assassination of Osama bin Laden was falling apart from incredulity.
Among the 38 dead in the helicopter disaster – the biggest single loss of American lives in the 10-year Afghanistan war of occupation – are believed to have been several of the 17 US Navy Seals involved in the execution of Osama bin Laden in early May. The dead also include other members of US special forces and Afghan commandos.
Early Western news media reports indicated that the Chinook may have been involved in a significant military operation against Afghan militants when it went down in Wardak Province, not far west from the capital, Kabul, early Saturday.
Taliban sources are reported to have claimed that its militants shot down the Chinook with rocket fire.
US military officials say they are investigating the cause of the crash.
However, of significance, unnamed US sources have told media outlets that they believe the helicopter was shot down. This unofficial US briefing seems a bit odd. Why would US military sources want to hand enemy combatants a stunning propaganda coup?
Perhaps, it serves US interests to divert from the real motive and cause of the helicopter crash, whether it was hit by a rocket or not.
US officials have admitted that the dead Navy Seals were part of the Team Six unit that allegedly carried out the assassination in May of the supposed 9/11 mastermind Osama bin Laden.
From the outset, Washington’s account of how its special forces murdered Bin Laden in his residential compound in Abbottabad, northern Pakistan, has been riven with contradictions. Why was the liquidated Bin Laden buried hurriedly at sea? How could the world’s “No 1 Terrorist” have resided inconspicuously only miles from the Pakistani military headquarters in Rawalpindi?
Most glaringly, several informed sources are convinced that Bin Laden died from natural causes 10 years ago. Author Ralph Schoenman dismissed the alleged Navy Seal execution has “a big lie”. From investigations over several years in Pakistan, Schoenman told Global Research: “I have interviewed several members of the Pakistani intelligence services and militants, and they have all confirmed that Bin Laden died from kidney failure over 10 years.”
More recently, as Paul Craig Roberts reports [1], Pakistani locals have claimed that the Navy Seal operation in Abbottabad ended in disaster, with one of three US helicopters exploding as it took off from the ground near the compound. The other two choppers had not landed and, according to witnesses, they flew from the scene immediately after the explosion. As Roberts points out, that means there was no Bin Laden corpse to dispose off at sea, as Washington maintains.
The key people who would know the truth about Washington’s incredible Bin Laden assassination are now unavailable for comment. Case sealed.

Spec Ops Command Slams SEAL Raid Book as 'a Lie' (CYA)
AP ^ | November 15, 2011 | Kimberly Dozier
WASHINGTON -- The U.S. military is denouncing a former Navy SEAL's book that claims to describe the "real" version of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden.
"It's just not true," U.S. Special Operations Command spokesman Col. Tim Nye said. "It's not how it happened."
Laden with conspiracy theories and attacks on the Obama White House, Chuck Pfarrer's "SEAL Target Geronimo" claims an alternative version of the raid in which the SEAL team shot bin Laden within 90 seconds of arriving at the Pakistan compound where the al-Qaida mastermind was holed up.
Pfarrer claims the White House issued a fictional and damaging account of the raid that made the SEALs looks inept. He says President Barack Obama's speedy acknowledgement of the raid was a craven political move that rendered much of the intelligence gathered on the raid useless.

Former SEAL stands by account of bin Laden raid, says administration out to get him

In a rare on-the-record denial, U.S. Special Operations Command has come forward to dispute the story told in a controversial new book exploring how al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden met his end at the hands of U.S. Navy SEALS.
“It’s just not true,” said Col. Tim Nye, U.S. Special Operations Command spokesman of the account told in Chuck Pfarrer’s new book “SEAL Target Geronimo.”
“It’s not how it happened.”
Pfarrer, a former Navy SEAL himself, says the Obama administration has a political interest in sticking to its guns, and that he has staked his career on the facts in his book.
“I think it’s very important that the administration itself push back on this. They have never really come out with a complete story,” said Pfarrer, in an exclusive interview with The Daily Caller. “The story they did come out with was a series of factoids: a 45-minute firefight, the deliberate wounding of a woman, a ground–up assault, trying to explain how a helicopter landed on the wrong side of a 20-foot wall and a 10-foot steel gate.”
Pfarrer, whose tale rejects each of those claims, says that the administration’s story — told most comprehensively by The New Yorker — was borne of haphazard political expedience.
“I’m afraid it’s a bit embarrassing for them. Almost everything that was released about the mission, aside from what the president said, was incorrect,” claims Pfarrer. “They had to reel in everything they said. They got tired of correcting themselves, and I think the final method of damage control was simply to freeze the story, stop the narrative where they left it.”
