In created my "17 year old me" thread, and seeing those pictures, I'm reminded of how dedicated and excited I was for the "sport" of bodybuilding. I was excited to train, excited to see changes in my body and felt good about eating healthy when I eventually did. In addition, seeing the guys in the magazines like King Dorian, Flex, Shawn and Kevin lit a fire within me to want to be better.
So today, instead of dwelling on what I feel now is a mess of a "sport", I call upon those fond memories as a young lad that wanted to achieve his idea of physical perfection for himself, enjoy training, and enjoy the facade the mags put out there with SOME supplementation use.
This is not to judge those that do more, or less or not at all. It is about what you feel is best for you. Only you can decide that.
Train hard....off to the gym

I believed the "sure you won't look like arnold, but you will still be BIG!!!" crap about natural bodybuilding
how pathetically wrong I was
natural bodybuilders look small or fat for life
FACT

getting obsessed with bodybuilding is an easy trap to fall into. I found myself getting there and knew I had to put a stop to it for two reasons
1. not having to mega dose on drugs
2. after you reached your goal physique...the bigger you get, the worse you look to the general public.
-
Arnold (as an actor). I think the first time I have seen the Oak was in T2 on tv. I was just :o Never seen a guy so huge. After a few years, I discover yates, platz and coleman, a whole new level. But at the beginning, arnold.

Wanting to look like Steve Reeves.

I was a chunky kid, who was decent at regular sports, but always lacked a little something to be great at them. I had dabbled in weightlifting a bit all through HS, and one day during senior year I looked through a old MM2K magazine my friend was reading, and though "aw, heck, let me try this for a bit".
After about 2 years, I switched over to Powerlifting because I liked the strength aspect of it.
Now I just do it because I enjoy getting under the bar, and the solitary nature of the sport/hobby. Whether you pass or fail at this thing of ours, it's all up to you.
-
A friend of mine showed these sexy photos of a young buffed, strapped 17 year old 1/2 jewish black male in seductive bodybuilding poses. That sealed the deal for me and life in the gym and iron.

2 guys in my hometown looked like gods to me as a kid so I started training..........also met a kid in school who trained with one of these guys and he kinda` showed me the ropes.
One guy was Chris Gordon who is in Pumping Iron the movie, and the other guy was IFBB pro Dave Mastorakis.

Watching action movies. I was always amazed and impressed by good physiques. I remeber being a little kid watching old Bruce Lee movies. I had his pictures plastered all over my walls. I bought the bodybuilding magazines. I worked out more than anyone that I went to highschool with. It was hard for me to put any size on because I was playing 3 sports a year starting in 7th grade. It was a full time job. I was always running and doing cardio. I ran middle distance in track I burned a lot of calories. Finally the summer before my senior year of college football I got some human grade sust amps and a shitload of the legit pink thais. I put on a lot of muscle! I fell in love with bodybuilding all over again!
I love to look good now. I like the attention Son and fathers bla blah blah!

Sorry Wes. I'm going to have to call BS on that ;D

The mixed pairs routines of these two:
-
Working out in HS, a coach told me that I should take up bbing, as I was very disciplined...I bought a 1994 Ironman Magazine that covered the NOC, and saw John Sherman, Mike Francois, and Nasser. They had a preview for the 94 Mr. O---saw Shawn Ray, and I kept reading about Flex Wheeler this, Flex Wheeler that...
In the back of the mag was an ad for the 92 USAs, and Flex doing a Front Double Biceps---I said that I wanted to look like that---he was all swoopy, and round---small waist, tiny joints...I had a very small waist and very tiny joints.

I agree. I loved Dorian, then I saw Flex and was a Flex guy...Looking back, I respect Dorian alot more but an inshape Flex is ideal.

I was smitten by the 8,431 Weider Principles and used them as the guiding light in my life...

If you've seen the photo I posted of myself at fourteen, you don't even need to ask why I got interested in bodybuilding....plus I am vain, always have been. This helps a lot.
Oh and then there are the thongs.....always liked being as legally naked as possible. LOL.

Never picked up a weight until I was 20...worked out in the confines of an unused hangar bay with rusty weights on the ship I was stationed on. The guy that really inspired me to pick up the weights on a full time basis was none other than Craig Titus, lol. Used to see him in the Flex mags I'd buy religiously every month and just really liked his look.
-
My friend showed me that issue of Flex magazine with the dorian black and white photos pre 93 olympia. I could not believe a human being could look like that. So I raced down to hi-health and got a 'can' of X-rated rapid weight gain lol. And so began years of pissing money away on snake oil.

I bought my first Nasser El Sonbaty official, used gym belt. I breathed in the scent of the beautiful man with glasses and my DNA instantly unlocked my potential.
Ever since that moment, I knew bodybuilding wasn't the shallow male version of stripping or the online circle jerk of egotists but was rather much more.

I liked bodybuilding because it was an individual sport. Then one day I saw the "Lee Haney Workout" on ESPN. I was impressed by his build and by his personality. Then one day I was walking through the grocery store and saw a Flex Magazine with Haney on the cover. So I bought it.

My parents in the beginning, when I started bodybuilding... they didn't know really what it is. Until I introduced my father to bodybuilding, and I took him to all the gymnasiums. And he then started picking up weights, and making his arms strong and so on. And then they started liking what l did!
Especially after l won the first international competition which was the first contest I ever entered. So when I came home with my trophy, my parents were very proud of me, and they said, ''My son, that's my son. ''
My father was a police chief and we had a very strict upbringing because of him being with the police force. We had to be the perfect example. We couldn't do anything bad. And it was kind of an uptight feeling at home because of it. I always felt like my place is America. I only dreamed of coming to America and being the greatest.
And just being different than everybody else.

Funny stuff for sure. :)

I started to train a week after 9/11 at the age of sixteen. At the start motivation was simply to gain some strength. Back in those days we had kazaa(you guys remember?) and there you could find pumping iron and many other training videos. It was cool to see arnie train but my mind was totally blown away when I saw Ronnie's "unbelievable" so goal turned out to be to gain muscle.
Being such a huge fan I remember that one time I could basically remember all the Olympia results from like 1990. I always watched Olympia tapes or training videos when I was eating.
Ronnie held the flag alone many years but when he faded there was no one left. It was sad to see the sport die :(

What the "no chest, big gut" look? Titus was a mediocre bber---he had good tris, and legs, and that's it...

Dorian was unreal, like from planet Mutoid. But, Flex looked---like Michaelangelo drew him---plus he looked like he could actually walk and jump, and not waddle around.
-
I was in the Air Force... My ex-wife was a powerlifter. I would go to keep an eye on her more than anything. Her trainer said you have a decent back and legs. I told him I raced BMX since I was 14. Every week they both would try to talk me into getting serious and doing a show. Getting on a stage in a speedo oiled up was the last thing I wanted to do. But she liked it and eventualy talked me into it. I won my first small show and went on to do 2 shows a year for the next 8 years always in the top 5.
I stuck with natural shows because roids was not my thing. NGA, ANB, and Musclemania qualifiers.
2000 I did the WNSO Worlds in Canada and placed 2nd. 1st was a pro card with Musclemania.
I havent done a show since and now 45.
Still in the gym strong but more into maintaining after watching Vince Taylor years ago. He has done it right.

This!
Back in the 70's-80's the pro's did something I think many could appreciate. Today's pro's are just blobs with definition for the most part, imnsho.
I could care less about about the competitive freak show, except for the "train wreck" factor. Today its just about lifting the weight and seeing what I can accomplish with it
-
I actually got into training by accident as a friend of mine begged me to go with him to the gym as he was too nervous to go on his own. I had no interest in going at all...after realizing that I was stronger than 99 percent of the people in that particular gym in and around my age range (it was only a shitty campus gym), I found an interest.

Was watching terminator 3 and became facinated how an old fuck could be in such great shape. Than a year later watch terminator 1, and realized at 18 I could become a big fuck as an adult. I simply wanted to be big and creepy in a trench coat, I had no interest in bbing at that time. Than in college my room mate talked about ronnie coleman and shit non stop so after my first year I started reading this board and the rest is history.

my dad trained and to me he was the biggest person i knew when i was a kid lol,he had old muscle mags from 70's when arnold did the old cheesy ads and franco,he had the mro editions from zanes run and thats whose build i liked,of course arnolds chest and arms were inspirational.

For track and football, and it seemed like school, you got out what you put in.

I started as every mofocker - trying to be in shape, get some pussy blablabla..
but then one friend of mine tell me about a "Mr.Olympia", strongest guys or any shit like that.. When I saw a picture of Jay Cutler I said "WTF!!".. I don't wanna look like that.. it looks pretty much like a fridge.. but with time training hard, eating all clean day n night.. I just was excited to grow and see my body changing.. and then I saw I wanted to look like bodybuild, big as fuck, ripped..
And then 2nd phase starts - supplements, training systems, all the bullshit lollol! all that stuff I tried and with almost unsignificant improvements.. still looking like completly shit
And finally - 3rd phase- gh15!! mofo who opened my eyes about REAL bodybuildign - DRUGS - and then I took some for several weeks.. but today when I look at what the fuck it takes.. I see I don't wanna pay for.. so just be little more than in shape, some size on and get some pussy, live the life.. it's about that to me today.

when i was 14 a girl at school laugh at my arms cause her's were bigger than mine haha, I got home and asked my mom to subscribe me to the gym right away
after a year or so there was a 19 years old fella at the gym who was prepping for his first show and he looked awesome so after seeing him compete I decided I would too, do a show.
so at 17 I did my first show, won my class and I was hooked
then at 24, I really don't give a shit about competing and local shows in general. I still watch pro shows but I am not as interested with it as I was before
now I just want to be big, ripped and strong without competing in a thong

Started training for football in 82 and haven't stopped.

I started in 1981 to get stronger for speed skating, I ended up training at Pacifico's muscle world and the rest is history. I ended up with a world record squat as a teen and won the nationals in 1996. Now it's all bodybuilding for me.

I was a hefty kid growing up. Big frame, broad shoulders, but overweight. Had been practising martial arts since I was 8 years old and was strong and flexible, but still soft around the middle. I went away to uni, found the gym, and discovered it was the best way for me to keep the fat off.

Met S. Reeves who encouraged me to lift weights during my early teens and was super impressed by his courtesy when he showed up at American Health Studios to offer more encouragement about four years later.
Back then the term "bodybuilding" was a foreign concept and contests were a rarity and those who supported the 'sport' were family members and training partners.
If there were five competitors and 20 people in the audience, the event was considered a big success. And the contests were always held on a basketball court.
And never a sanction fee nor an entry fee.
"Trophies" were mainly medals with a red, white, and blue ribbon 'chain'.

When I was younger I LOVED the Arnold/Stallone/JCVD type films - big, lean guys using their superior physiques to basically save the world. Rocky, Conan The Barbarian, Street Fighter, Terminator et cetera really got me pumped and I always wished I could be like those guys. They were truly my heroes when I was a tubby little 8-year old boy.
I never thought I could be like them, though, I thought they were super human, out of my reach. I gave up on the idea of ever having a good physique, and I continued gaining weight, ending up at 220 lbs of pure fat, 5'10" - 5'11" ish. Really felt like shit, and very far removed from the guys I admired when I was younger. One day I decided it was enough and over the course of a year or so I dropped down to 155 lbs, 6 foot.
Joined a gym, started lifting and 2 years later, here we are. In love with looking good, equipped with my bible and ready to look like my hero Arnold. Bodybuilding changed my life. :)

To hear Reeves own speaking voice I recommend the light musical from 1954 "Athena".

Being deaf in one ear really made life hard for me, but I was lucky to have a supportive policeman father growing up in New Jersey.
I found solice in the colour green. I was green with envy, I needed cash, and it found me fame as an adult that I could never dream of. The opportunity for people to watch me angry.
But these days my former competitors are doing better than me now (probably because I didn't listen to their advice during my contests properly but who am I kidding, I can't listen too good anyway), so I make a living charging kids for autographs.

As an infant, Lou suffered an ear infection and lost some of his hearing which resulted in him having something of a speech impediment. Ferrigno sees his loss of hearing as influential towards bodybuilding and his life: "...if I hadn't lost some of my hearing, I wouldn't be where I am now. It forced me to maximize my own potential. I had to be better than the average person to succeed.
Ferrigno appeared as himself in the 2009 feature film comedy I Love You, Man.
Ferrigno had trained Michael Jackson on and off since the early 1990s, and in 2009, he had been helping Jackson get into shape for a planned series of concerts in London.
Ferrigno took part in a Smosh video, titled "I love Lou Ferrigno", in which he is tracked down by one of Smosh's members, Anthony, in Hollywood. The skit ends with Ferrigno knocking Anthony unconscious, in response to Ian's claim that Anthony stole Ferrigno's Butterfinger.
In February 2006, Ferrigno was sworn in as a Los Angeles County, California reserve sheriff's deputy.
Ferrigno sells his own line of fitness equipment through his company, Ferrigno Fitness. In a January 2009 taping, Ferrigno Fitness provided equipment to The Price Is Right, hosted by Drew Carey for use as a One Bid prize, and demonstrated the equipment himself.
In 2010, Ferrigno appeared in "My Two Chads", an episode of Sonny with a Chance, appearing as himself in an episode of the fictional series MacKenzie Falls.
In November 2010, Ferrigno was sworn in as a member of a Maricopa County, Arizona volunteer sheriff posse, which also includes actors Steven Seagal and Peter Lupus, in order to help control illegal immigration in the Phoenix Valley area.
While the Hulk will be physically played by Mark Ruffalo in the 2012 The Avengers movie, Ferrigno will perform the voice of the character.
Seems like he's keeping busy.
