Tennessee tourist arrested for bringing pistol into 9/11 Memorial

A tourist from Tennessee waltzed into one of the most secure sites in the city — and politely asked a cop if she could check her weapon.
Instead, she was dragged out in cuffs.
Now, Meredith Graves, 39, is facing at least three years in prison for thinking New York’s gun laws are anything like those in the Bible Belt.
Graves, a fourth-year medical student, showed up at the memorial on Dec. 22 to pay her respects during a trip north for a job interview.
She didn’t realize that the loaded .32-caliber pistol in her purse would be a problem until she saw a sign at the site that read, “No guns allowed,” sources said.
“She remembered she had the gun on her,” a source said. She walked up to a security guard and said, “I have this gun. Where can I check it?”
The guard told her that she was in luck because of “law enforcement day” — and led her to another area.
When she got to that section, she asked another cop, “We have this gun — can we check it in here? We [my husband and I] are not law-enforcement.”
That’s when she was arrested.
Graves, who has a full legal carry permit in Tennessee, was locked up on a weapons-possession charge and held on $2,000 bond that she posted yesterday. She is due in court on March 19.
She’ll soon find out exactly how serious New York City is about illegal guns. The Manhattan DA’s Office is pursuing a conviction on felony gun possession — carrying a minimum sentence of 3 1/2 years.
Mayor Bloomberg, with the help of the five district attorneys, has crusaded against the flow of illegal guns, especially from the South.

So the 2nd Amendment allows you to own a gun, but just not carry it in some States/cities. Do I have that right?

i dont get how this works because technically the constitution is supposed to trump states rights

serves her right
-
I think it should be up to the individual to check laws of various states.
HOWEVER
The transparency and honesty with which she acted was such that it was clear it was a genuine mistake.
A fine is what i would give if I was a judge. That girls life will be ruined if she was put in jail.

I love here and have a full carry license. But guess what! it's only for NYS and not applicable for NYC. It's so absurd it's not funny. I live in NYC and have A NYS full carry, but my license is not applicable in NYC

fuck new york. also, on the back of a concealed weapons permit it tells you the other states that honor your states cwp.

She fucked up. If you are going to carry then you need to be responsible enough to check reciprocity laws. That said if they fuck with her too much up there if feel sorry for any car that comes through here with NY plates, guaranteed speeding ticket.

(AP) NEW YORK - A leader of a tea party group was arrested after he took a gun to LaGuardia Airport.
Tea Party Patriots co-founder Mark Meckler was taken into custody Thursday morning after he tried to check in for a Delta flight to Detroit with a locked gun box containing a Glock pistol and 19 cartridges of ammunition, Queens prosecutors said.
Meckler, 49, declared the weapon, as required, authorities said. He's licensed to carry the gun in Grass Valley, Calif., where he lives, but that license isn't valid in New York, which has strict rules on carrying concealed weapons, they said.
"He didn't have a correct understanding of the law," said Al Della Fave, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which polices the area's main airports. "Though he has a permit to carry in California, that did not cover him in the state of New York."
Meckler spent the day in jail and was arraigned in Queens late Friday afternoon on a felony weapons possession charge. He was released pending a Jan. 12 court date.
The charge could carry prison time, but travelers who are arrested in such cases and appear to be trying to comply with the law typically pay fines.
The name of Meckler's attorney wasn't available Friday, and attempts to contact him by phone and electronic message were unsuccessful.

So can other amendments also be discarded like the 2nd amendment in NYC or any other place? How do they get away with it? Lets say they(NYC) decided that the 1st amendment(freedom of religion, press, speech) can no longer be used in NYC. Sure people would bitch, but didn't they set the precedent with not allowing the 2nd amendment?

While that is disgusting - it is the responsibility of the gun owner to learn what states reciprocate.
They probably broke a shitload of other laws driving from Tenn to NYC as well.
Their best bet is to never give a single tourism dollar to a prick ass state that hates the 2nd amendment.

yes, they go into great depth about "This is only good in YOUR STATE and detail how it's YOUR responsibility to research and follow the gun laws in any other states. Some reciprocate, but you have to live under a rock (or in rural Tenn) not to know NYC is loaded with some shitty anti-gun laws.

Just so were clear, if you got a gun, access to medications, a car, a plane, heavy machinery, a big fucking drill or anything potentially dangerous, learn the fucking laws and liabilities that go along with it. Seriously don't act like an innocent child when your taking the role of a fucking adult.

39 years old and still in med school..? I understand that it takes time for some people to get in to med school, but that is ridiculous. What's the point, financially speaking, of doing that at such an old age? You're already half-way to retirement.

I live in CA and totally agree with this.
I find it hilarious that the states/cities with the strictest gun laws have really accomplished nothing in keeping the guns away from criminals as if any law stopped a criminal to begin with

only police in society should have guns, guns should be banned from citizens no exceptions, eventually the thieves gun's would dry up and everything would be fine, we just have to control what comes into this country aka guns to make this work. Guns are the problem, not the people.
Look at america's murder rate by guns vs other countries with them banned, it is just common sense.

If we took out the amount of gun crimes committed by ghetto thugs and animals, our crime rates would be similar to Europe.
The thugs and beasts are the problem, not the object they use to commit their crimes.

are you serious? based on it's population\population density: gun crime rate nyc is one of the safest "big cities" in the world
Yes - guess why?
Most of the savages killed each other off in the 1990's with the crack epidemic and we also locked up a lot of the violent thugs.
Additionally - NYC has become so expensive to live that most of the thugs left for other places and spready their animalistic ways elsewhere.
The gun laws have nothing to do with it.
-

1) Average USA police response time is 11 minutes. Rape is complete, throat slit, end of story.
2) That would be one shitty 50 year period waiting for the bad guys guns to 'dry up'.

Agreed - what she should have done is left and let the others go on and go back to her hotel and put the gun with her stuff.
I can't believe anyone is this stupid.

the point of this thread is nothing more than the person who started needs an outlet for his paranoid, manic delusions that the government is out to get him.
He's also not very smart so stuff like this that seems fucking stupid to a normal person seems like an outrageous violation and a "sign" of the communist take over of America

Why do so many Americans always want or need to carry a gun with them? Is their society that violent and criminal? Are they scared? No laws and no law enforcement? Does the USA resemble some parts of Mexico with extreme violence and drug gangs ruling the land?

Should Gun Rights be Reciprocal Among States? Tenn. Women Arrested in NYC for Carrying Legal Gun
REASON ^ | 12/30/2011 | Nick Gillespie
The New York Post (founded by Alexander Hamilton, but don't hold that against the current version) reports on the strange case of Meredith Graves, a 39-year-old medical student and nurse from Tennessee who was arrested for illegally carrying - and voluntarily surrendering - a gun at Manhattan's 9/11 Memorial. Graves is licensed to carry in Tennessee and was in New York for a job interview, reports the Post, when she and her husband visited the memorial. Upon seeing a sign saying no weapons allowed, says the Post, she realized she was carrying a .32 caliber pistol and inquired about how to declare it:
When she got to that section, she asked another cop, “We have this gun — can we check it in here? We [my husband and I] are not law-enforcement.”
That’s when she was arrested.
Graves, who has a full legal carry permit in Tennessee, was locked up on a weapons-possession charge and held on $2,000 bond that she posted yesterday. She is due in court on March 19.
She’ll soon find out exactly how serious New York City is about illegal guns. The Manhattan DA’s Office is pursuing a conviction on felony gun possession — carrying a minimum sentence of 3 1/2 years....
The Post quotes her mother making the case that gun rights should not be subject to state infringements:
“You’d think states would reciprocate with the Second Amendment. She has a license to carry in Tennessee,” said her mother-in-law, who lives in Manchester, NJ.
Bonus anonymous Volunteer State voice whose opinion of New York probably couldn't have gotten any lower anyhow:
“Everyone down there carries, and she just forgot,” said the woman, who would not give her name. “She was being honest, and this is the treatment they give innocent people.”
The Post notes that Mayor Mike Bloomberg has made a huge push against illegal guns in the city.
Whole story here.
So what do you think, kind readers? While I think most reasonable people would agree that prosecuting such a case is a monumental waste of law enforcement resources, what about the case for reciprocity in gun laws? Assuming New York's and the city's laws pass constitutional muster, isn't this just one more case of respecting local differences (ironically, that sort of federalist-localist claim is more typically associated with the South than New Yawk City)?
If every place in America is forced to be just like every other place when it comes all laws and regulation and taxes and collective bargaining and trans fat and this and that (including gay marriage, come to think of it), isn't that supposed to be a bad thing? Or should the standard for gun rights and many other things (free speech, religious liberty, not having to quarter soldiers, etc.) ultimately be set at the highest level possible? What do you think is the way to decide which rights get special protection and which ones don't?
-
epic stupidity

If she's doing it out of sheer passion then more power to her and I got nothing against that. But career/finance-wise it's probably a bad move. Sure she is bound to make more than most people ever will but at the same time she's sacrificing a big portion of her most lucrative years on the job market while at the same accumulating horrendous debt.

Yes thank you for proving my point, no guns on the street, gun stock would dry up, stop the supply coming in and the so called "thug beasts" would not be committing gun crimes, we would be a lot safer similar to other countries where police only have guns.
Do you really think there aren't any "thug beasts" in these other countries LOL ;D

what about the girl who weighs 98 pounds, whehn she runs into 3 big guys in an alley planning to assrape her? Call 911 and wait for them to 'trace' the call? lol
guns are the great equalizer. you don't get mugged when you carry a gun - you smirk at the approaching thug/dirtbag and put your hand on your gun under your shirt. You shake your head no, ever so slightly, then you watch him awkwardly change course and keep walking. Nobody calls police, nobody is hurt or robbed or anything else. A crime is prevented. Happens all the time.

Verb:

Synonyms: endure - carry - suffer - stand - tolerate - support
As far as I can tell as a legal layperson, that blatantly means a persons right to own, and carry firearms shall not be infringed?

Seems like our founding fathers actually went out of their way to make the 2nd amendment very clear, and easily interpreted.

A woman should not be out late at night by herself, or late at night at all, she should be in the house. There are muggings in every country, how many times have you been mugged? You are exaggerating, a country without guns would be a much safer country. Just look at our crime rates with guns involved. Guns are only meant for police to control the population and the military.
Also the government could do a very extensive person to person, house to house, car to car, every hiding spot with very tech savvy gear to find the guns still that haven't been turned in, it would be great and very smooth except for a few crazies that would try and start trouble.

isn't that the only "arms" they had back then?
it would make it hard for the local wack job to shoot up the mall, or school or whatever

Marine Faces 15 Years Behind Bars for Unknowingly Violating Gun Law
The Daily Caller ^ | 01/03/2012 | Steven Nelson
Posted on January 3, 2012 7:08:47 PM EST by Lancey Howard
Ryan Jerome was enjoying his first trip to New York City on business when the former Marine Corps gunner walked up to a security officer at the Empire State Building and asked where he should check his gun.
That was when Jerome’s nightmare began. The security officer called police and Jerome spent the next two days in jail.
The 28-year-old with no criminal history now faces a mandatory minimum sentence of three and a half years in prison. If convicted, his sentence could be as high as fifteen years.
Jerome has a valid concealed carry permit in Indiana and visited New York believing that it was legal to bring his firearm. He was traveling with $15,000 worth of jewelry that he planned to sell.
The online gun-law information Jerome read was inaccurate...

No doubt some of my fellow New Yorkers punked and clowned on your ass when you served with them in the military. One of them probably fucked your girl too. The butthurt has been consistently strong.
How many times have you been through the TOMBS for robbing and raping old white ladies?

About as many times as you've spent in the lecture halls of a prestigious Ivy League institution. ;)

Prison not enough for peaceable armed citizen, Bloomberg smears her with lie(NY)
St. Louis Gun Rights Examiner ^ | 3 January, 2012 | Kurt Hofmann

On December 22, registered nurse and fourth-year medical student Meredith Graves, from Tennessee, was visiting the 9/11 Memorial in New York City. Ms. Graves, rather than abdicating responsibility for her security to others, was carrying a defensive handgun, as she is licensed to do in Tennessee. That, unfortunately, avails her nothing in New York. When she saw the "No Guns" sign before entering, she did her best to comply with the law, asking a security guard where she could check her gun. The guard directed her to a police officer, who promptly arrested her for violation of New York's laws against self-defense. She now faces, if convicted, a minimum of 3 1/2 years in prison--and New York apparently intends to aggressively pursue the case.
So far, nothing especially unsual about the story--we recently talked about another visitor from out of state who is now facing prison charges stemming from his failure to realize how passionately the New York ruling class loves mandated defenselessness. Well, actually, there is something unusual about it: this case has led even some New York politicians to think that the law needs to be changed. Where this story exceeds the typical level of outrageousness of New York's forcible citizen disarmament culture is the libelous lie Mayor Bloomberg (presumably annoyed that his beloved gun laws were being questioned) smeared Ms. Graves with. From Capital New York:
When asked whether the woman deserved any leniency, Mayor Michael Bloomberg indicated to reporters at a press conference in Brooklyn today that she had other problems.
"Let's assume she didn't get arrested for carrying a gun," he said. "She probably would have gotten arrested for the cocaine that was in her pocket."
Cocaine in her pocket? Umm . . . no.

there may be more to this.... arrested with $15k of jewelry in pocket?
Was the gun turned in after some incident, some other law enforcement seeking them?
Maybe these are just the dumbest people in history, it's possible. But to me, maybe there's something else that made flags go up.
Whatever the result, I will never vacation in NYC, unless 333386 is going to provide armed security.

NYC DA [Not Shown] Cuts Deal on Gun Law Ignorance Case Number Four
The Truth About Guns ^ | 4 January, 2012 | Robert Farago
Actually, this was the first recent case of an otherwise law-abiding out-of-towner caught carrying a handgun in The Big Apple. Last spring, NYC cops arrested Maryland concealed carry permit holder Stephen Grant when maids found a gatt in his Muse Hotel room. Like three other recently nabbed CCW permit-holding tourists, Grant was looking at a mandatory three-and-a-half year stretch. nypost.com reports that the Manhattan DA’s making this one go away. “Prosecutors did not seek an indictment against him, and allowed him to plead guilty to fourth degree weapons possession, a blanket misdemeanor that covers any gun, knife, brass knuckles or the like.” As Beretta used to say . . .
“If you’re travelling into another state with your firearm, know the rules and regulations that apply. THEN if you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime.” Or something like that.
Needless to say (’cause we already said it), Mayor Bloomberg’s minions will offer a similar deal to the other three inadvertent scofflaws; so as to avoid providing ammunition for supporters of House-approved H.R.822, the National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act.
No really. Clock this excerpt from yesterday’s nypost editorial by Peter F. Vallone Jr. (D-Queens), chairman of the City Council’s Public Safety Committee [above]:
Don’t get me wrong: I’ve written and helped pass many strict gun-control laws to prevent the flow of illegal weapons into New York, and prevent their possession here. But legal guns, with permits granted here or elsewhere, are not the ones being used to commit crimes, and they aren’t the problem our strict gun laws were enacted to combat . . .
We still need to fix our gun laws, both for the sake of fairness and to head off that bill in Washington. While our carry laws are too strict (only a few thousand people in New York City have carry permits), New York should set its own standards, and not be bound by the actions of states like Florida, which recently gave 1,700 permits to felons (in violation of federal law).
But with cases like Meredith Graves’, we’re giving the rest of the country ammunition to force passage of the House bill. If that happens, we’ll have truly shot ourselves in the foot.
And so, back to today’s deal-cutting denouement . ..
The DA’s office did not comment on whether the same deal would be offered in two related cases which The Post has gone to bat for: Meredith Graves, the Tennesseean tourist busted trying to check her gun at the 9/11 Memorial, and Ryan Jerome, the Indiana jeweler and former Marine tail gunner busted trying to check his gun at the Empire State Building.
It seems likely that Graves and Jerome will take the deal. It seems equally clear that Tea Party Patriots co-founder and California concealed carry permit holder Mark Meckler, nabbed for gun charges at the airport, will fight.
Maybe not. Maybe Graves or Jerome will do the GTFO thing to the DA and become poster children for H.R.822 and Meckler will deal. We shall see.
