Title: Hate to say it but boxing is almost dead - this says it all
Post by: Darren Avey on January 13, 2012, 07:52:58 AM
Current HW champ Wlad Klitschko walking down the street and no ones even looking at him never mind surrounding him, pointing, asking for autographs, etc.
In Tysons day he could nt walk down any street anywhere and not be mobbed.

I'm pretty sure overeem or rodriguez or who the fuck else in mma can walk down the street and no one would care.

Randy Couture or Chuck Lidelll would get recoginized most likely for being in the movies than an actual fighter.

With all the money he's been making i'm sure he couldn't care less.

If i was in his shoes, i'd be happy if people didn't come up to me for autographs while i'm trying to do my normal chores.

Yes. And what happens when Big Money Jay Cutler takes the streets ?

Yes. People stop him asking for taking a pic, to touch his biceps etc.

Slightly off topic but I see Amir Khan looks like he's getting his wish for a rematch against Lamont Peterson - the WBA have ordered it.

I hope Khan gets destroyed in his own backyard this time.

boxing is alive and well.

most athletes in general are not recognized in the US unless somebody points it out and that somebody usually follows the sport really well.

True story..I was in Houston's in coral gables once for lunch random Wednesday about 5 yrs ago with a lady friend. Saw this guy looking my way like I knew him while we were eating...we made eye contact a few times..felt gay as hell because I felt I did know him from somewhere but I couldn't put my finger on it...I kept telling my friend this guy keeps looking at me...etc..felt weird as hell.....then after damn near 15 minutes of this he was leaving heading down my isle, some guy walks up and shakes his hand then it hit me...it was Alex Rodriquez.

Guy didn't even look the same as on television.  Gave him the "what up" head nod. I told him he looked bigger on TV, we laughed about the gay stares, shook his hand and that was it. The chick I was with was flipping the fuck out though.

Ratings suggest otherwise.  I don't have the official ratings, but compared to recent UFC PPV's boxing is doing as well or better than the UFC ratings/PPV buyrate wise (HBO/Sho).

its New York for christs sake, Elvis could be walking down the street hand in hand with John Wayne, Babe Ruth and Adolf Hitler and no one would notice, people are too busy making sure they dont get their I Phone robbed by some spook walking down the street.

I think the greedy promoters have ruined boxing by not allowing great fights to occur (mayweather and pacman).  It's akin to something like the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers, while both are football teams, would not play against one another because they are in different leagues.

Klitschko might be a boring fighter, but he's still great in absolute terms. Who does he need to fight to prove it? He beat the hell out of Lennox Lewis.

Only thing it proves is that American fans don't care about boxing when the champ is not American.

Boxing is only "dying" in the US because their are no great US heavyweights right now.  Talented Heavyweights are the class everyone wants to see fight.  As exciting as Pacquiao and Flyod are and as much money and attention they draw, they still are stigmatized by being small guys.

I have been a boxing fan all my life, watching Ali as a kid and Tyson as a young man. They were superstars and were mobbed everywhere they went anywhere in the world. We haven't had a heavyweight like that in a long time.

Interestingly, when we had Forrest Griffin here last year for FitX, he was stopped and recognised everywhere we went, even at the Melbourne zoo which was mostly families. Surprised me a bit really, how popular he was.

He couldn't do that in most european countries, trust me. Problem is, the US always thinks the world evolves around them, when in fact noone is giving a shit about you but yourself. ;D

Like mentioned before, a lotta soccer superstars known by billions of people around the world and worth hundreds of millions $ could walk down the streets in the US completely unrecognized.

The heavyweight champion of the world - the baddest man on the planet - it will always be exactly that - and will always return to boxing.

Outside a handful of redneck assholes who are obsessed with constantly walking around in tapout tshirts showing how hard they are, nobody gives a rats arse about mma, and never will.

Outside a handful of redneck assholes who are obsessed with constantly walking around in tapout tshirts showing how hard they are, nobody gives a rats arse about mma, and never will.
Good post!!

With all the money he's been making i'm sure he couldn't care less.

If i was in his shoes, i'd be happy if people didn't come up to me for autographs while i'm trying to do my normal chores.

totally disagree...the money is unsatisfying in the end without the recognition as well..you want people to make a fuss over you everywhere you go because it shows you have status.....the Heavyweight Division in boxing is soooo dead...the Klitchko brothers have no charisma at all..no one gives a fuck about them
