Jack Torrence had tremendous amounts of chicken, steak, rib roasts, pork roasts, ground beef, turkey, and lamb in the Overlook Hotel. He couldve gotten huge! He shouldve brought weights to train with. He had the whole winter and early spring to get jacked!
Instead; he tried to kill Wendy & Danny. :(

Clearly it was the roids that contributed to his craziness. Clear case of Roid Rage.

towards the beggining; the cook describes the food that is available to the family.... The cook has the ability to "shine"... Like Danny does.
The cook gets axed by jack torrence late in the film

Shining is one of the fucking best flicks ever. Still works to 100 % after 30 years, that's what you call a classic.
I've read a lotta stuff about Kubrick and that guy was a freaking maniac who drove the whole team crazy. For example in this scene he refused to use copies of the sheets, he insisted that every single page had to be typed individually for authenticity, can you imagine that? ;D. Also he repeated perfect scenes 100s and 100s of times cause he never was satisfied (everyone else considered the scene as perfect), the whole project was short of being cancelled, and noone of the actors ever worked with him again.
-
Ah, the opening scene. Goosebumps, good ol days ;D

in the directors commentary they said that there were like 120 takes for the brief conversation between Danny and the cook (the two discussed "Tony" and the ability to "Shine")

In the directors commentary; the giant maze is said to represent the human mind.... And Jack gets lost in it... And dies there..

Not sure if is true but I read somewhere that he refused to direct the movie "A.I. Artificial Intelligence" because he wanted the kid to be a real robot. lol ???

Kubrick doesn't make movies that are just about what you see on screen. The Shining/fake moon landing conspiracy is hard to ignore.
http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread509050/pg1
Every single movie that Kubrick made was thought about and redun in his head a thousand times. Every scene ment something to him. Some even say he was murdered right before "Eyes Wide Shut" had its final edit...

Anyone who watched 2001 Space Odyssey in 1968 or even today in 2012 had to think that this fucking guy Kubrick had not only some serious skills but was also privy to some deep dark secrets. fools today can't put out the realistic shit Kubrick did in 1968. The jig is fucking up homies. Kubrick was taken out for sho

Watched that movie as a small kid, scared the shit outta me.
-
It is true that Kubrick was very difficult to work with. According to R. Lee Ermey, the infamous Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in Full Metal Jacket, Kubrick had a scene where the recruits would piss into a urinal and Private Pyle was to clean it with his own toothbrush.....and then brush his teeth. Kubrick's version was more hardcore than what we were seen and was greatly toned down at the behest of Ermey. However, some of the scenes did make it in spite of Ermey's protestations.....the punching of Pvt. Joker in the solar plexus and the ultimate killing of Hartman and subsequent suicide of Pvt. Pyle.

Kubrick was probably the best director ever, and the proof how close genius and insanity are.
What's so unique about him is that he made very few movies, basically just one of every genre - and every single one is genre classic.
2001 - Sci/Fi
Full Metal Jacket - War
Shining - Horror
Spartacus - Epic film
Eyes Wide Shut - Thriller
Clockwork Orange - Whatever genre that is, I got no idea ;D but a classic
Fucking genius

I never understood this pic from the Shining. After Jack dies in the maze, the movie shows a far away shot of a group of framed pictures hanging on the wall. Then it slowly zooms into the pictures, and it shows Jack at the center of the ball room in a crowd in the 100's. The date is then shown as 1921, when present day is in the 70's I think. Does the pic mean he was always there?
-
Doesn't he die in the book from the boiler blowing up?

ahem! you're forgetting the 3 transformer movies. so you're at the very least, you are three times wrong !! :-*

Crazy good horror film.
Still creepy and scary as fuck.
-
I found this quote just now from Kubrick on the ending and the pic above of Jack.
"I hope the audience has a good fright, has believed the film while they were watching it and retains some sense of it. The ballroom photograph at the end suggests the reincarnation of Jack"
Stanley Kubrick

Doesn't he die in the book from the boiler blowing up?
Yeah. King wanted the spirit of the place destroyed by fire. Kubrick by cold. One of more than a few things that differed between the book and flick. King's on record noting his dissatisfaction(s) with the movie. Love the book. Love the movie.

I'm surprised that King was dissatisfied with the movie. Tons of his books have been made into movies, the vast majority of which strayed very far from what was portrayed in the book. He never seemed to really care, as the money was great and the occasional cameo.
-
Should i watch this film, Dr. Chimps? ??? ???
Fark yes! It's kinda like Stairway to Heaven, tho - ie. it's now larded with so much cultural baggage and it's language has entered our our vocabulary, so sometimes it's hard to see where one ends and the other begins. The scene with the twins just standing there still creeps me out.
-
Most King movies pale by comparison to the book.
The Shining is great, and as Chimps said, that twins scene and the old lady in the tub scene are fucking creepy as hell.
-

king "hated" the movie because it was different than his book and surpassed his book
kubrick took king's idea and made it much better
there is no other logical explanation for an obvious horror fan to "hate" that movie

I dont beleive he did. I like Kubricks movies but the movie doesnt explain the blowjob scene and many other things. It skips out on the history of the hotel that wouldve added more depth to the movie and it missed what could have been an awesome scene where Jack checks out the kiddie park and has a sense that the pruned bushes made to look like lions and shit are getting closer and closer to getting him. That part was a great read. The black guy isnt supposed to die, at least thats not what I remember in the book and at some point hes supposed to contemplate killing the boy and his mom. Its been a long while since Ive read it, but I found it way more fun and frightening.

Grady was the best part of the movie.
-
"I corrected them."
in the initial job interview; Jack Torrence was told that in the winter of 1970 that a caretaker killed his family with an axe. That caretaker's name was Charles Grady
Why is he called Delbert Grady later in the movie??
-
In 1979, Ullman hired a man named Charles Delbert Grady to be the Overlook's winter caretaker. Along with his wife and two daughters, Grady spent the winter months in the hotel running the boilers and doing maintenance in the exile imposed by the closed roads to Sidewinder. While no one is quite sure to this day what exactly happened, many believe the solitude drove him mad and he ended up killing his wife and two daughters. He left their bodies posed idyllically in Room 237 before eventually turning his rifle on himself. When the Overlook's staff returned to open the hotel for the season, they discovered the bodies of Grady and his murdered family posed in Room 237.

I watched the movie in it's entirety recently on DVD. This scene makes no sense to me and, unfortunately, there hasn't really been any commentary on it. Apparently, one of the guests who died in the hotel was a furry???

If you ever have some time to kill, this guy hear talks about how heavily Kubrick was in with the Occult/Heirachy. I believe what is going on in this scene is Kubrick telling the "conscious" viewer about the Illuminati and their occult ties. All of Kubricks movies are tied together. This scene here in the Shining and Kubrick last film "Eyes Wide Shut" come together.

King is deeply into the Occult. And he knew that Kubrick took his book and was telling more than one story with the Shining. As he did with all his movies. King saying he hated the Shining movie was King telling the Hierarchy that he doesn't agree with Kubrick telling "their" secrets.

I'm gonna watch this shit again tonight.

If you read the book, it mentions that the hotel hosted lots of parties, including costume parties, so I just took it to mean that.

Interesting observation:
"It has been pointed out that there's a mirror in every scene in which Jack sees a ghost, causing us to wonder whether the spirits are reflections of a tortured psyche."
Royalty's Opinion: the Ghosts are not reflections of Jack... The ghosts are real. A real ghost had to unlock the door in the kitchen to free Jack Torrence. Leading up to that point; Wendy hit Jack with a bat, causing him to fall down the stairs. She then dragged him to the kitchen and locked him in that huge pantry. Locks dont unlock themselves! Sombody had to unlock him. I believe Delbert Grady unlocked Jack. It sure as hell was not Wendy or Danny!!

Kubrick was deep in to the Occult. And partied with the hierarchy. However, he was never truly one of them. He didn't have the bloodline. The Hierarchy used him as a tool(fake moon landing etc). Kubrick is telling the viewers that the Occult/Hierarchy fooled him into thinking he would be one of them. And when he found out that he could never be part of the club, the Hierarchy laughed at him. Hence, hot chick turning into the hag.

It still boggles the mind that 2001 was made in the mid to late 60's.

I didn't come up with the theory bro. Many people have studied Kubrick and come to the conclusion that he knew way too much about things most people couldn't even fathom. 2001 made in the 1960's really shouldn't have existed back then.

It is well known that Kubrick was warning us all with his portrayal of the computer in 2001: A Space Odyssey, by naming the computer "HAL".
Each letter is exactly one letter away from IBM.
