one of the best amateur bbs ever.. he won the world championship 11 times in 3 different weights!!..
in his first ever contest he placed 4th in the world championship after training for a short while in a garage with some hand made weights!!..

while checking al-shaht history for this thread i found out that yates came in 7th place in the world games 1985 and berry demey was the winner of the heavy weight!!..
not bad for yates who had started lifting only 2 years before this show!!..

just in case you still didnt notice, this is a bb site and this guy was one of the best ever..
by the way i am not a big fan of his physique but i respect his achievements especially when knowing he stopped competing for about 7 years before returning again which means he could have won the golden medal for may be 18 times!!!.. he was unbeatable in the amateur world..

he turned pro. in the 80s and tried his luck but didnt place well so returned again to the amateur world :D..
and no he was never really sponsored.. egyptian bbs are some of the best in the amateur world but it's very hard for them to continue to the pro. level without real support..

al-shahat's achievements make him one of the VERY best amateur bbs (who kept competing in the amateur level).. his physique was not the most beautiful but it was good enough to make him won the golden medal (in 3 different weights) all these times with many off years which means he could have won many more!!..
