and doing a different workout each time for each muscle group can still yield results huh? constantly switching reps, sets, exercises, rest. personally this is more fun to me, but i wanna be able to track progress....i know i know the mirror! haha

I see many twinks holding their notebook/training log or whatever like their heirdom in the gym, between every set, they have to go to their priceless notebook to jot down some information about how much they benched for this set, and they also refer to previous pages to check how much improvement they already have made for today's training session, this, so far, is the gayest and most pathetic thing that I ever see in the gym.

Sugar = empty calories.

For an idea on how to mix up workouts to keep things interesting, look at my posts in the Training Journals Section, and start a journal of your own.

Nothing worse than carrying a notebook and writing during a workout when you could/should be training or getting prepared for the next set.

no doubt, and you just look at mirror and adjust huh, i guess this goes for everything. just track macros, do whatever in the gym to stimulate muscle.. and inject hormones haha?

I track my calories when I diet, when I don't diet I simply weigh myself now and then and use that as a rough guideline as to how much I'm eating. Obviously also use the mirror.

When it comes to workouts, I keep track of 5-6 key lifts* (in my head) but I don't keep track of every exercise. Poundages for isolation lifts and smaller muscle groups are only tracked during priority training.

*only top/peak weights (not every set)

Just started squats again today.......bad back from years of training.

I do deads, but not all the time..........depends on my goal at the time.......in that journal,I was training for some contests.

I`ve been doing it so long,I have no problem remembering.

Now as far as other stuff goes,I can`t remember shit.

haha. so from a hypertrophy standpoint do you feel squats/deads are needed?

and thats the thing i know for a fact i cant remember what i did week to week! but yet you still feel it doesnt matter and i can still make gains in muscle size/strength?

I would do them.......they are meat and potato type exercises.

For an example,Benches are gonna` give you a lot more bang for your buck than cable crossovers would and squats are gonna` be more effective than leg extensions ,etc. etc.

They are not a must but can be excellent exercises if you like doing them and are built for them.

You don't have to squat to get big legs there are other exercises you can use to overload your quads. Whatever works for you.

You sound stressed by training theory  :D I used to be that way too. Still am, but much less so nowdays.

¨

Just write down the top weights of a few key exercises on your cell phone. 1-2 heaviest set on bench, squat, pulldown, row, shoulder press, deadlift or whatever exercises you are using. Easy. When you feel good you try to increase weight or reps. When you don't feel good, you don't.

You are gonna take all the fun out of working out if you continue doing that! Try to relax and find a happy medium. You need to find an 'organic' approach that you can live with.

A real good approach for someone who has been training for a few years is to pick 1-2 muscle groups or lifts and focus on them for 2 months and just maintain the other muscle groups. This way you can focus your mental and physical energy and not have to spread them thin.

So pick 1-2 muscle groups and blast them for a couple of months. Work them twice a week or even try training them 3 days in a row or twice a day or something like that.

I log the important stuff in my head. If it's worth remembering, I'll remember it.

The people I see at the gym with their face in their log books are either queer asses or Danta worshipping permabulkers. We have one of those guys at my gym lol oh brother!

Yes so make the next two months into 'chest months', and just do low volume maintenance work for other muscle groups. This will make you much more focused.

x2 on logging in my head. I've kept a few online journals, mainly for the social aspect (wow that sounds bad) but if you can't fucking remember what you did last week on a few exercises... Not to mention once you actually get strong (relative to your own genetics) it's not like the numbers are gonna be climbing every week.

Yeah logbook obsession is gonna burn you out and cause anxiety or get you injured because you end up trying to force the poundages when you are having an off day.

and what if i switched everything up every workout? ex: incline bb, flat bb, incline flies one week, then smith flat bench, decline db, and dips, then something different the next week? all with different sets/reps, would this matter? then there would be no need to remember what i did last week bc it would always be different lol

Right, after training for a lot of years, your strength just doesn`t go up every workout no matter how hard you train......if it did,we`d all be benching 1000 pounds for reps!  ;D

Don't switch everything up, you need some constants in your routine that you can use as reference points. Secondary exercises you can switch around tho. Also regulate how heavy you go depending on how you feel and don't lock yourself to certain workout days. If you feel like crap one day take a rest day and come back the next day and have a kickass workout.

Planned chaos...not anarchy. ;D

Yeah,he might just be better off waiting to try something like switching things up every workout.

I did recommend that to him,but on second thought it`s maybe not such a good idea.

I stayed on set schedules for years, changing things up if I felt stale, but now it`s always something different every week.

Try to get whatever clean stuff down i can as long as i can(chick brst, salmon, shakes etc).then cheat. I cant eat100 :(% clean all the time. I would go insane. So i found a happy medium.

Workout is pure instinct. I think sometimes u gotta listen to ur body. Lately its been pedal to the floor lol. I have to make myself stop. Recovery is literally ridiculous. I called in sick to work today just to lift.

Because like T-Rex said,it`s kind of based on instinct in a way.

You have to know your body really well, and go by feel.

Bingo. If someone learns how to become intuitive then there's nothing more to the training discussion, really.

It's unfortunately something you can't teach everyone though. Most people need a cookie cutter routine or they just stop going to the gym. It's better to have a loose game plan and go in there and let your body take over from there.

and how about volume, stick to moderate as in 12-15 sets for legs, chest, back, shoulders and 6-8 sets for arms, calves, traps? finally weight each set, pyramid up, keep it the same....should i go to failure?

I used to be a fat fuck and logged it while I was getting back in shape and just haven't stopped. The program I use is fitday; also helps to track my cycle, dosages and bodyweight.

I always use a log book at the gym. Im a big believer in using journals for everything in life.

I like to progressive lift and I cant remember what I did in terms of reps/weight from a week ago, so I write it down.

Bodybuilding and powerfliting are about gaining experience and learning as you go. How can you do that if there is no evidence of what you did previously? How do you know what adjustments to make?

Haven't logged my work outs in forever... and don't think I ever will... just seems to be a waste of time to me... considering, even if you are making progress, everyday, every week, will be different, some days you will be stressed, some days you will be tired, some days you will be sick, etc etc...  So meh...

As for diet, I have a basic meal plan / calorie plan written out on excel... and I try to stick to it (but doesn't always happen), I don't log everything that I eat religiously... even when I'm dieting for a show, I just refer to the pre-written plan  on excel.. again never really write it down every night or anything!

I log my training session.

I weigh my self every week to 10 days and write the date at the top of every page. I will record what I am training that day and then I simply put the exercise I am doing, the number of reps, sets and weight for each exercise.

Everytime I train a part I aim to increase the reps or weight, it may only be 1 rep in 4 sets but it must go up, to be honest it does 95% of the time, just occasionally you stall as I not had enough foof/rest etc.

Would never ever train without doing this. I used to and progress was slow, records help big time.

so what do you do now just something different each time?

by now i already know the exercises i like and feel the most in the muscle. When im in the lifting room i 'plan' my workout 'instinctively' right there. If im feeling tired during the warmups i'll rep out if i feel like warmups feel light i'll may attempt to max out on the first working set in (note for me maxing out is at least 6-7reps NEVER 1rep) and then rep out the rest.
