The ones in the top pic always seemed heavier to me than solid ones.........most of the time anyway.
-
which weighs more? a ton of lead or a ton of feathers?
-
the old school, followed by the hex, and then rubber dumbbells, those to me always feel 10-20lbs lighter

The ones in the top pic are heavier.. the ones in my gym are 5lbs heavier than the normal dumbbells... yes i told the manager that the weights seem off, and we weighed some... the ones over 60lbs are usually 5lbs heavier... im not saying this as a rule of thumb, but at least in my gym thats how they are... maybe a bad batch?

Dear dork, the weight of the each dumbbell is written in the both ends of it with numbers, in you case one digit number per dumbell..It can't be heavier than that..
-
The oldschool ones are heavier..
Most weights are always out, either heavier than said or lighter.
Normally lighter with newer stuff.
-
Top, the bottom ones balance better. The length of the top ones make them balance odder to me when the weight gets heavy.

It's the Genova factor.

Agree. And when those top ones are all rubber-coated 7.5lb plates, any DB over 100 is, like 18"-24" long. :-\

the rubber coated ones are garbage.... and again find them easier thn the solid metal ones

Generally, because the plates are cast to be as cheap as possible, the tolerances are very loose, so a 5lb plate might weigh 4.85 lbs, while another might weigh 5.10 lbs, etc...... Generally when you cast metal, a small item will be closer to weight than a large one(assuming the molds are in good repair), so most companies just shrug it off. On larger items the weight might swing 3-5 lbs on a 45lb plate or even more on a 100lb'er.
That's why you see such a big jump in price on better and competition grade plates, because they are milled down to close to exact weight. York and Ivanko have a tolerance of 2% or so on their gym plates, and few grams on their competition plates that you see at big meets.

the hex dumbells are the exact weight stated. with the fixed db's only the weight of the plates is stated as the weight. but the bar weighs a few ounces per inch, and the 120's are almost a foot long, and actual weight is about 127
-
They all weigh the same to me, the only benefit is the multi-plate ones FEEL different in differing movements. Overall ya gotta love the rubber-coated metal for being able to be dropped a few inches and not sounding like a fu#&ing earthquake... :D

The hex dumbbells look odd to me, I prefer the old school look.
-
I'm sure the weights aren't exact and might be off by a pound or two but I have a hard time believing a company that makes dumbbells for a living doesn't consider the weight of the handle when offering their products.
In regards to feeling "heavier", if the dumbbell is longer then it's harder to balance (more weight away from the fulcrum point, i.e. your hand). I think this is a more likely explanation than the weight of the handle being neglected.

an 80 lb. dumbbbbell has 8 - 10lb. plates plus the bar and bolts.

i initailly thought this till i trained in miami....
the weight difference was not 1 or 2 lbs
unless the dumbell in my gym arent labelled right as ther are old school and welded together.... those suckas are damn heavy

Then why does the picture of the 200-lb dumbbell in the OP have 9 same-sized plates and one smaller plate on each side? Same with Ronnie's 200-lb ones here.
Dumbbell is the correct spelling.

Aren't you a monster bencher? Surely you can do one rep with 200-lbers already.

So because he thinks the thread is stupid, based upon the fact that one ton of feathers is the equivalent to one ton of weights, makes him weak or not a serious trainer?
Do you believe a pound of fat weighs less than a pound of muscle too?

ok, you win. in this situation that is correct. i do own a gym, and have been to many more in my life. i have replaced my dumppell set four times in the 20 years i have owned it. every time, the weights come from the factory with numbers painted on the dumddells equivolent to the weight of the plates only. i should have disclaimed that that may not be the case in every set in every gym in the world, but as a general rule, that is how they are labelled. i have the hex dummmells as well, and they are the true weight as listed. wasn't trying to be a know it all, just trying to explain to the thread starter why they seemed heavier.
and as i thought it was obvious by the way i spelled dumbbbbells the first time, i am intentionally mispelling it since you earlier pointed out that it had been misssppellled. a poor attempt at humor i guess.

I am 100% sure the new stuff, black hex dumbbells, are somehow heavier than the old shit in my gym at same written weight. Same happened with the plates...funny.

I hate rubber plates. They don't make a sound when you use them, I love the sound of plates banging against each other.
-
If I would have seen this thread a few years back, I would have thought it was stupid..... because
the weight is whatever weight it says on there, right?
Not the case.
My old trainer told me to weigh all the plates that I had at my house. Even ones from the same
manufacturer had huge variance. Supposedly 45lb plates ranged from 42-47.5 lbs.

Exactly ... I just laugh at the people who have made silly comment on the thread kind of highlights the real trainers from the Internet funny guys.
-
with barbell plates, it depends on who makes them. there are companies, usually european, that calibrate their plate weight to the gram. these are official olympic caliber plates.
but the cheaper plates, typically chinese (no racist) use a mold and just fill the mold with iron, so all the plates are the same size. the problem is they are using different types of scrap iron, and there are various densities to various alloy combonations. so two of these plates the exact same size will vary up to 8 % from the stated weight.
-
I have found out that one of the things that limits strength increases is that, the heavier you go up in weight with dumbbells and barbells, they become clumsier to handle because they become bigger and bigger.
Consider the flat dumbbell press. As you go up in weight, the disks become taller or they remain the same size but more are added to each side. In either case, this severely limits the range of motion and thus the effectiveness of the exercise. When using those huge 200 lbs dumbbells, you get nothing out of it because you can't squeeze your pecs as the dumbbells touch each other when your arms are still almost parallel to the ground.
The solution would be to make heavier dumbbells with denser metals, as this would allow heavier dumbbells of the same size of lighter ones made of iron or steel. Unfortunately, dumbbells made of lead or Plutonium won't be very good for your health.

If you`ve ever seen a record breaking lift at a power meet or an Olympic lifting meet, you`ve seen them weigh the entire barbell along with the plates and collars for accuracy.
Example:
A guy does a squat with 415 pounds = 8 plates,the bar,two collars......when they weigh it,it comes out to 411 pounds.

touching the dumbell at the top of the movement is a waste of time IMO ... i just press straight up and down

A famous case of plates not weighing what they should happened to a powerlifter named Ernie Hackett. He was set up for a #903 squat, and when they weighed out everything it was #940. He managed a #37lb gain without knowing it, he just gutted it out. Back in the 70's and 80's it was hard to get a #100 pound plate, and usually they were never milled because no one had the machines to handle a plate that big. Most companies just drilled out a 100lb standard plate. It was common for them to be 5-7lbs out of weight.
On the denser metals thing, back in the late 80's, early 90's a company tried lead dumbbells in a heavy rubber covering, it was a novel idea, but no one wanted to handle them.

Hahah the same thing happens to the gym I attend. There are like 10 50lb plates from the same manufacturer, some of them weigh 50, others weigh 54-55 and one weighs 59lb, wtf?

If the lead leaks out and enters your body through breathing or some fissure in your skin, you could end up with very serious kidney and brain damage.
