Title: The Weider System - Bodybuilding Nutrition And Diet
Post by: MCWAY on June 02, 2012, 04:48:29 PM
I found this to be interesting. There's a nutrition roundtable or lecture, if you will, with former Mr. Olympia, Franco Columbu, Mike Matarazzo (1991 USA Champion), American Gladiator Raye "Zap" Hollitt and another female bodybuilder whose name escapes me at the moment.

(please keep the flame-spraying to minimum  ;D ).

Lovely vid.

Dr. Columbu breaks it down and makes it plain, though I'm still trying to find out what "breast chickens" are.  ;D

"I'd say 10% fat, protein's around 40%, and 30% would be my carbs"

Matarazzo ate 5lb of ground beef every single day which caused him a bunch of heart issues so I know that what he said was some scripted garbage....same with everyone else especially Franco who said that the only thing you needed was calories and water.

All marketing

Franco didn't say the only thing you needed was calories and water. As for Matarazzo, he was talking about his contest diet, not so much his offseason diet, during which he consumed lots of beef.

Plus, Franco's Sardinian. I think he can relate to Matarazzo's big Italian family with big meals.

Is it just me or do the early to mid 90's just seem like a more innocent, happier time?

Marina Pacific Hotel restaurant.

So, that's a general restaurant. If you watch the 1991 WBF Championship, the chef of La Facon, Roger Brandston, is portrayed as Gary Strydom's personal chef. Strydom said the restaurant is an extension of his condo.

That was probably when you cut your teeth into bodybuilding. I started in the late 80s; so, I sometimes have the same feeling, especially when the WBF arrived.

That was from the late Shelley "Siren" Beattie. Considering that Muscle & Fitness almost always preached the 60-30-10 deal with carbs, protein, and fat (respectively), I'm surprised that made the cut.  ;D

There isn't anything in ground beef that can hurt your heart, it's actually heart healthy.

Carbohydrates are what damage your heart, get with the program.

Same here

My friend left a Muscle & Fitness magazine at my house. What inspired me was that Larry Scott and Betty Weider were on the cover. It showed a previous cover with the two of them in 1968 and an updated picture of them nearly 20 years later.

That did it for me. As usual, the myth you hear about bodybuilding was that all your muscle turns to fat when you get old. Yet, there was a 50-year-old Larry Scott, who was nearly as big as he was in his 30s.

Well, the folks, howling about "pink slime" might disagree with you.

Damn, even back then Romano drove women to the brink---except that time, she swore off men for good...

Wait, it says right here (Flips tru Weider Training Manual, Vol VII, The Weider System), ah, here it is...

"While in Ketosis ( /kɨˈtoʊsɨs/), one may experience a smell similar to something burning...it might have a peculiar smell akin to pork or bacon...that is you 'burning' fat."

Well according to the video, you can't burn any fat without a certain amount of carbs present, then the guy says ketosis is poor way to lose weight and if you do lose weight it will more then likely be muscle and water, bunch of baboons.

hm, some 50-100gramms of carbs daily still works for me though.

i dont know why low carbs works best for me for fat loss(and staying lean), but i know it does work best.

esp on steroids and hard training regiment, i dont see how muscle can be wasted, while one eats plenty protein and gets enough rest.

ok, when deep into single digits, some muscle can be lost, but by then, you look good enough anyway 8)

Spot on.

I've never needed to go ultra-low on carbs to drop weight. Usually, ingesting about half a gram per pound of bodyweight works well for me, particularly when the bulk of the carbs are simple ones, taken during or after training.

That's what he blamed his heart attacks on although the steroids certainly played a part.  As far as Franco saying calories and water, I believe he mentioned it in an Ironman issue but I can be wrong.

Still, the Weider system was mostly marketing and without the proper "supplements" it would cause you to severely overtrain

It's about 20 years old (late '91, early '92). Notice the contest footage from the '91 Mr. O (Yates) and the '92 IronMan (Matarazzo).

Nope. That's former Mr. Universe and Arnold's idol, Reg Park.

Didn't his father have a heart attack? Matarazzo mentioned that, prior to his being confined to a wheelchair, his dad had bigger calves than he did.
