What is the best all around home gym? If you had a garage or basement and could put a home gym in it, which one would you get if you could keep it under $2500-$3000. Pix?
-
sorry to be predictable, but it just doesn't get any better. throw in a heavybag and a concept2 rower and your all set 8)

More than $3000 but.....
What bradistani posted is almost perfect.

Agreed, a good powerrack, A 0-90 degree adjustable bench, A decent bar and #1500 of plates or so. A plate loaded lat machine and a few odd and ends like mats, etc..... should fit right in that range. For dumbbells, buy a few adjustable handles and #200 of standard plates.

You could change the rack for a deluxe from EliteFTS or Legend Fitness.

Elite has great racks but expensive as hell and when they do have sales they rape you on shipping.

Joe, you posted a pic of a home gym a year or two ago that was pretty damn nice.
It cost a decent amount but it was a helluva nice setup.

I think the olympic bar, power rack, and bench will be great but I would add dumbbells too. Get some IronMaster or power blocks dumbbells. A power rack from Powertec doesn't cost that much.
-
For those who are used to going to the gym a home gym is pointless, you won't use it. I spent 4 grand on home gym, olympic weights, squatrack, ab,dip, chinup station, preacher curls, dumbbell rack, tree, and a lot more yet, had it for 6 years and only used it when me and my buddies got drunk a few times a year.

I'm pretty much the same way. I never had a huge set up but for a while in my early 20's it seemed like I just moved a ton (literally) of weights around every year or so.
I'd sit there and look at the weights all day long but it took actually driving to the gym to get a decent workout.
-
if you have a lot of room, the classic power rack, bench, dumbbells and barbells are great.

i have a home gym and i used it when i workout in the afternoon and the gym is going to be packed. I have a Power rack, dumbbells and rack, barbells, a cable machine, and treadmill. The only thing i find hard to workout at home is legs.
But, truth. If you are going to the gym, save your money and just buy some dumbbells. I know people that go to the gym, and just own a cardio machine so they can do cardio first thing in the morning and night.

Speak for yourself stud, I use mine everyday.
This is what you need Bay (Under $2000 ).

I have 1500 sq foot basement with a 9 foot ceiling and I turned most of it into a really good gym. I like training by my self. The music is always what I like. I never have to wait for any equipment. I have the usual stuff like squat racks, olympic and power bars; benches, leg extension and curl machine, pull down/ low row, chin bar; treadmill, heavy bag, dumbbells, leg press, calf machine, and other junk.
I do understand that some guys like the energy and social aspect of training with others in commercial gyms. Commercial gyms have great equipment. Back in the late 70's and 80's it was really rare to find a women in the gym. Now it seems it's more than 50% women. It sure gives you something to check out between sets.
-
wow i have been waiting for this topic to come up. i have a stationary bike, a weider weight bench that you can do leg curls with,
a curl bar and a olympic 45lb straight bar, i have a weight tree with 3- 45lb weights 3- 35lb weights 3- 25lb weights 4- 10lbs weights
and 4 5lb weights. i have 2 resistance band ropes one thick and one thin, my weight belt and gloves 2 full length mirrors and thats my
home gym.
and yet i still have a membership at 24hr fitness in the bronx for $44 bucks a month that i never really use. the only problem with a home gym is getting up the motivation to get off the couch and start, but once you do its really great being able to work out at home. i only wish i had a lat pull-down machine for back but everything else i do at home including squats, leg curls, leg extensions etc.
oh i also have 2-50lb dumbells 2-35lb dumbells 2-25lb dumbells 2-12lb dumbells and 2-10lb dumbells and all this takes up very little
space in my hardwood floor studio apartment in new york city. and i probably spent less then $400 dollars for everything, most expensive thing is the stationary bike i got at Modells for $129 bucks and everything else i got off craigslist that people were selling.

Was discussing this the other day in fact:
1 squat cage bolted to the wall + 1 adjustable hammer strength bench + olympic barbell + rack of dumbells.
Now tell me what bodypart could not be fully developed with the above....
-
If you ever look at the Ironmaster site you can get a lot done in a small space. Dumbbells and a bench you can do everything. When it comes time to down size my house I just might go that route.

That stuff is even better than the crap in my "commercial" gym. They don't even have a power cage (no gym in my town has) :-\

I forgot where I read it....but they say that 60%+ of all home equipment is used less than 3x/mo on average over 5yrs.
I bought a commercial Precor Stepper off craigslist a couple of years ago...cost me $200...I have used the SHIT out of it. God help when it breaks down. I will NOT go to the gym for morning cardio...

I believe this. The few guys I know who have home gyms don't use them regularly. 90% of the time it is a nice idea that fizzles. If they still train they do it at a member gym. I'm beginning to think this is true for home cardio machines too.

If you want to save money and you like to think old school in your backyard get some tires, blocks and pipes and some rocks that you put in bags and you would surprised at the hardcore workout you could get from this.
-
I was limited on space and got the Powertec Workbench, I used it a lot when getting back into the schedule and still use it periodically when I don't have time to go to the gym
Bench, incline, leg curls, extensions, cable for lats and pull downs, low rows and even squats. Very satisfied with the equipment.

How would you perform DB curls when the stands are so close to the bench, or can they be adjusted in distance?

Looks great, slightly too sterile/futuristic - maybe some urine on the seat might up the appeal.

Or place it in the Metroflex gym for a few days..
-

The seat slides forward, and then you can do incline curls, various shoulder presses, etc... You can even fold the seat and seat-back flat to do one-arm back rows.
COOL thing is this comes with adjustable d-bells, so PROGRESSIVE loads can be applied without stopping to change plates!!!
Hit your workout hard, then get in the shower- no wasted time!! FREE SHIPPING TOO!!!! www.weiderfitness.com go to "weight benches" category near top...

I only read in the specs that the seat is adjustable/removable, not that it can "slide" (like a car seat). However, I also read that the stance can be adjusted in width. I hope it's enough to perform things like curls and lateral raises, but I would prefer a separate stance. I've never tried adjustable DB's like those, but I hope they are solid enough to drop them a few inches (in the heat of the moment after a heavy set)

There is one setup, I believe it is called Profusion or Proform or something like that. Basically a power cage with a twist as the barbell is attached with a cable at each ends and it is self spotting. Basically you grab the bar and it activates it as "GO" when you are finished, you simply let go of the bar and it locks in place immediately. Unlike a smith machine that is locked into a path of movement you can lift and swing this bar all over the place like you would do a regular barbell.

I train solely at home and have a good deal of equipment.
I have Squat Rack, Bench Press, Incline Bench and a Free Standing Bench for Dumbbells. 600 lbs free weights, Olympic Bar, EZ Curl Bar, Triceps Bar, Another EZ- Curl bar with wide grip attachment, Dumbbells that go from 10 to 150. I also have a Pull Up Bar and Dip Station. There is nothing else I really need. I could easily have cables as all you need to do is buy two large pulleys and aircraft cable from Lowes, but I really don`t need them and have not bothered with it. This is more than enough.

We're GetBiggers, we DO NOT train legs, remember??? ;D
-
indeed, that is indeed more than enough for you.
is your triceps bar collecting dust and spiderwebs?im asking because you have no triceps.
No its not as I use it often. I am a Lifetime Natural and am certainly not under any delusions of being much over 160-170 lbs and very lean. I don`t concern myself at all with measurements and have no intention of comparing to anyone other than myself. If I can beat whatever my previous best in size and conditioning, than I consider it a success. I`d be happy with a 1-3 lb gain in muscle, but It most likely won`t happen at this point. I am 100 percent fine with that.
-
sounds great, pics?
Not interested in taking any really.
-
wow, its nice to see you came down to earth since comparing yourself to nobody less than ron coleman ;D
just yanking you chain man 8)
I still train very hard, in fact, two days ago I had a slight scare after doing Chest and Back. I actually lowered the weight on both muscle groups and focused on slower, more rigid form. It was difficult and I got through it all right, but after my shower, I felt incredibly dizzy and had really bad vertigo. This had never happened before and it was awful. I must have been straining too hard and not breathing as I should have been. I even felt a a slight pressure in the back of my head and increased heart rate for a little while. The vertigo has now faded and I feel absolutely fine now, but am wondering if I should train today or not.
Surely this must happen to powerlifters and such. Its just amusing to me that it happened after lowering the weight and trying to focus on rigid form. :-\
-
;D
ok, but where is the weights?is it those square things looking like a chic teacan?
if thats all the weight, this is basicaly an overpriced sunbathing chair.
lol, pistolsquats ;D
^^
Dude, each adjustable dumb-bell goes up to 100lb, enough for MOST on here. I use more for one-arm back rows, but I have separate "heavies" for that.

that's why a power rack has pin settings... You place the bar pins right above your chest in case you get stuck. Now that you know this, no excuse to use the pussy ass smith machine anymore...

i definitly use my stationary bike almost everyday because i hate doing cardio at the gym, however i think people may use there weights less due to the fact you have to re-rack everything when your tired. i know thats my biggest downfall of working out at home is putting everything back in order so my apartment does not look a mess.

Looks better, but I would never consider to buy typical home equipment again. Yes, it could be versatile/flexible, cheap and as a bonus, you don't need to drive to the gym. But most commercial stuff is in another league and I'm so much more motivated/focused to work hard in the gym.

Exactly what I have except a different brand. I also have olympic db handles and a zillion 5kg plates and I can make up to 60kg db's then. Also EZ Curl bar which is not necessary but nice. Oh yeah, the cage I have also has dip bars which is a nice plus.

all interventions of True Adonis are valuable and pertinent except the calorie concept.
Nothing tangible, just some indices over the last years.
I surely wrong, I don't know you
-exacerbated local nationalism
-devotion to it's State (visibly, the most authentic of the US)
-devotion to it's founder fathers and their values and aphorisms
-living alone in a big empty house in a little "authentic" community
-walking around with guns
-prepared to an hypothetical end of the world or stranger invasion
-constantly observe abnormal human behavior in its community
-recluse in reading phylosophical, historic book linked to the preservation of the individuality
-pathological self preservation, everything is too marked (same everyday routine, same philosophical straitjacket) and definitive sentence,
-autarkic.
maybe you need to travel and encounter people from south America, Europe and Asian continent, to let go, move off the state and its heavy legacy, redefine sense of your own freedom, build a mixed family in a big and distant city (Vancouver, Montreal Tokyo, Sydney, Seattle..).. For an atheist, you have built some dogmas that drive you, ironically, in a "religious" way.

I have a junk home gym with maybe 1,300 pounds of weights a legpress, hack squat, cheap squat rack, flat bench ,real steep old style incline and dumbells I put togther for well less then a 1000. To tell the truth, i have never understood the motivation to participate in activities like this, by the time you save up your pennies, buy the ridiculously expensive equipment, learn what your doing, drag all that gear up a cliff, drag it all back down again, fight the elements, spend a shitload of money, get sun burned and lose your wallet all to drive home and realise you left something back at the cliff. No, hobbies like that make me tired, you could achieve a similar chemical reaction in your body jumping on a trampoline. Sports like that are for wankers and showponies!
::)
Seriously, Cannondale is an excellent bike and Bay approved! 8)
But why "hopefully"? What would stop you from getting it if that is what you want? I feel guilty admitting this: I have bought two Treks in the last three years, but never ride because it is too hilly around here! :-[

Own one and you will know. http://www.cannondale.com/bikes
If you were were raised on a Huffy, and you're happy with it, you should probably stick with it, but obviously, there is a reason people (serious & recreational riders) trade up to better equipment when they are in a position to do so.

You don't have to know anything of bikes; you make similar decisions every day. We all do. Would you buy a Toyota if you could afford an MB CL Class? Both will get you from point A to B. Would you buy a shirt from the Sears if you could afford a similar shirt from Nordstrom? How about a burger from McDonalds vs. one from your local steakhouse of choice? It's not always about the label; sometimes goods are more expensive because they really are better.

all you need is a good olympic weight set up and a couple of simple cardio machines (one challenging machine and one that you can take it easy on).
a home gym is much better than going to the gym. No travelling, gym fees and no excuses for when you're feeling lazy as it is right at your feet.
-
I have a power rack, one of those weider benches with lat pull down, a chin bar, bowflex dumbells, heavier dumbells, a few more barbells and 400+ lbs of weights and that's all I need. I've been working out at my house for the past 6 years (3-4x wk) because the gym in my town sucks terribly.
-
I had a decent garage gym.
solid power rack
adjustable flat bench
2 45lb bars, 600lbs of weights
1 set of powerblocks (up to 90) with stand
random curling bars and dumbbell bars
all were from Caigslist, so you can be way under budget possibly
I was able to do most things except decline with the gym bench I had. I had another bench that had decline on it. I wanted to buy a leg press/hack squat combo but never got around to it. Legs is probably the only thing where I wanted more variety other than squats/stiff legged deads.

Own one and you will know. http://www.cannondale.com/bikes
If you were were raised on a Huffy, and you're happy with it, you should probably stick with it, but obviously, there is a reason people (serious & recreational riders) trade up to better equipment when they are in a position to do so.
I did the expensive road bike thing and even went for a 500 mile ride in five days. No matter what you ride you are getting the same bike workout depending on how hard you push. Yes, you won't be able to keep up with a light weight road bike when riding a hybrid but you will have a lot more comfort.
I ride a top of the line hybrid type Cannondale now. It's the discontinued Adventure 1. Cost about 1K. It's riding position is upright and it's a relatively heavy bike and I can't keep up with skinny tire road bikes. I do get a great cardio bike workout and more important I am really comfortable for my whole ride compared to my old racing bikes.

If just for cardio, wouldn't the heavier, non-race huffy give a harder and better workout? ???

are you saying you were in shape when you were "competing"? ???
What's your problem, he went for the health look after being a mass monster freak for long years!

"I had.. I was..."
What happened? You've got married and/or kids?
I started to work from home and decided to sell what I had because being in your home for almost 24 hours a day got old, especially day after day. I resumed my gym membership to get a break from the house and see people again.

Ha, it's about the same situation here. Yeah it's good for your mind to be in another environment, and a gym is always better than drinking 5-6 beers in a local bar ;)

Yea...same here. When you live in the town of Sylva, NC (The same place they filmed the movie Deliverance), fitness centers are not exactly high on the priority list. :-\
