Have you bodybuilding avant-gardes noticed the craze over kettlebells that has progressively grown over the last 3-4 years?
What's the story with kettlebells?
Are they a crossfit training fad?
Are they no more useful than flinging around a dumbbell with the same amount of weight?
Can any of you claim a discernible difference in your physique due to their use?
My equinox gym now has an entire section area of our gym dedicated to crossfit training with all sorts of gimmick tools and kettlebells have started to accumulate in large numbers.

It's a fashion boom right now... though I think it's already declining a bit....
Kettlebells are big in Russia. They even have had annual championships of kb lifting since the 60's.
Used also in training of soldiers so it sure must have some benefits.
-
Good for mobility, cardio, fat loss and abs.
OBVIOUSLY moving any weight will build muscle to a degree etc
They are not 'better' they are a different tool that if you want to try or enjoy doing you should.
They are NOT a magic wand though.

How effective are they in building strength?

Well, they even have a kettlebell class at my gym that does about 45min - 1 hour of kettlebell routines.

I have used them out of curiosity - not for the cardio.
You will not build a big physique but for the average person you can build a good physique!
-
I like using KB's for higher rep cardio work....usually using a clock instead of counting reps. The distribution of the weight feels different than a DB...try doing a high pull with one and not have it flip over and crack your wrist...
-
Someone should PM Alex23 or Chaos on this as they are experts (no joke)
KFI640!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There used to be a kettleball training studio across the street from the gym I used to train at... it only lasted about 6 months. Some of the exercises I've seen done with kettleballs seem foolish and dangerous to me, especially if you drop the fucking thing.
Although it may be beneficial in some ways, kettleball training is/was a fad.
-
A waste of time...stick to Barbells and Dumbbells. really think they will build you up like a heavy loaded bar?? I think it´s a thing to interest people more into cross fit bollocks and general fitness...Bodybuilding??? in my opinion ..NO
-
They are not designed for bbuilding.
They are meant to be a simple tool that can be used for many things.

High rep swings are very good for cardio!
You will not build a huge physique using KB's or a balanced one.
-
i use'em with clients. you can train soccer moms and fat hockey dads with 2 sets of kettle bells 12 and 16kg, a yoga mat, a 3/4" band, a 2" rope, and a TRX strap all day. throw in some thai pads and sparing gloves maybe and a 30lb solid lead bar.
I'll use kettle bells myself for 1 arm overhead tricep extensions with a 24 or 30kg. easier on my wrists than a regular dumbell. that's about the only bodybuilding use for them.
-
Although I will agree that the use of the term "pood" to describe the weight is phenomanally gay

I do know one or twoo people who trained with free weights and now exclusively train with KBS. I think submitting to any fad so easily and quickly is a bit daft IMO

KBs been around way too long to be called a fad. They've just found a "cool" way to market them.
-
What I mean is the whole RKC, Pavel Dragondoor Comrade fad.
-
What I mean is the whole RKC, Pavel Dragondoor Comrade fad.
I think they are fun for cardio, but wouldn't use them for strength training. All the marketing and advertisements just push it to the masses.
-
yes. overrated. the swinging that most people do with kettlebells, is a very good way to get hurt.

I had bought a kettlebell set last year. Good set of weights but I've found that they have made my forearms and grips much stronger.
-
yes. overrated. the swinging that most people do with kettlebells, is a very good way to get hurt.
Using virtually any weight incorrectly is a good way to get hurt...
-
I bought a set and sold them at a yard sale, use less.

Agreed
-
any form of fitness is better than nothing and i am sure they will get you some results but for me i stick to my Barbell and Dumbbells and other free weight equipment i have in my home gym. I do not really think swinging a Kettlebell will work you like running for fat loss. I think they could/can be an aid to training but not for Bodybuilding and sculpting your body. If you like them then do it but i will stick to a more standard approach to building muscle.
-
Probably are overrated.
But are probably fun if you want to take a break from your usual workout and focus more on fitness.
-
The principles of weight training have not changed over the years.. it´s about pushing more weight and PROGRESSION..sure you can do more reps/superset...etc,etc...but a plate loading Dumbbell is so much more versatile. I have had years ago great results from 2 plate loading dumbbells and a flat bench. I really loved the workouts i did with this very basic set up..the point being..it was progressive resistance and overload.
-
only good if they are the halloween version..... ;D ;D ;D

never used them, 98% sure i would never uses them if they had them at my gym anyways

If you do it right it is a good wya to get strong and fit!

Pressing a 48kg (approx 110lbs) kb is much harder than pressing a 110lb DB
Does not make it better. Just different.
-

just easier with certain tools then others.

Cheick Kongo has definately matured as a fighter
He was quite strategic against Lavar, trying to avoid Lavars attacks as long as possible in the first round, tiring him out before he found an opening and used the groundgame (which is Lavars big weakness).
Props Coach!

This guy promised me huge muscle if I train with his Russian kettlebells. He says spetsnazis are using them bells.

Pavel is good guy.
I have KB sets from 8-64 kg.
-
I do swings I between changing machines on cardio, or if i do drills like crunches, dips/pushups, chins then swings
-
I do. It seems to connect everything together and tighten things up.
-
if you wanna look like pavel, kettleballs are for you
-
Yes but only when working out with my PT friends.
Solo I always end up bashing my forums on KB snatches and cleans
Note: they are not ideal for bodybuilding but fit in somewhere

I have a friend who is a "trainer" he look like shit, but he know how to train others, he does kettle bells to...
He have some strange and exeptional reason why he cant be in good shape! But im pretty sure that if he did what I did he would look 10x better than now...people are strange! Lift the fucking weights , do cardio!
Best thing fr muscles are lifting weights, not swing them!
Best thing for low bodyfat is cardio!
Pretty easy!

people always rant on about ..Yeh you know the Russian Army use them or i do my cardio with them because i´m too fucking lazy to do real cardio. 2 mins swings and it´s enough ??? cardio my arse. plus Military training is a total other ball game to bodybuilding.
-
Very homosexual.

wrong

Personally - I prefer hex dumbbells much better. a lot more variety and capabilities possible than w the round kettlebell.
But its better than nothing obviously.
-
My friend who's big on bjj swears by them for fitness, conditioning, balance and good overall strength through movements.
He does Pavel style training, not the dime a dozen general PT qualified style that does appear to be a fad at the minute.
-
Why can`t a dumbbell be used like a kettlebell? ??? ??? ??? ???
-

For a number of movements, it can.
-
Anything that can be done w kettlebells can be done w hex DB.

Wait until they discover paint buckets.
-
Didn't kettlebells evolve into dumbells for a reason?
-
They're good for anchoring a rowboat. Other than that, I don't see much use.
-
Not just for weaklings... Starts at 17:50:
that's the exact exercise i do with them good triceps workout.

I hate this fad with a passion.

Rocky also took a page from Branch Dwarfsens book and went all out with the chains there. Guess Rocky is getting with the modern times.
I wonder if Branch could perform even one of those pushups Stallone does seriously.

It may not have been a fad back then, but it sure as hell turned into a fad with all the stupid crossfit bullshit.
-

It wasn't CrossFit that turned into a fad. It was brilliant marketing by Pavel. Soon strength athletes began using them and adding to their strength training. You can go into almost any university and pro strength and conditioning weight room and find them. USC keeps a set at every platform. You won't find more hatred (besides me) for CrossFit than a strength and conditioning coach.
-
they have their place.
I use them extensively with my bootcamps and group training. 1-2 kettlebells per person and I can train them for an hour with a full body, HIIT-style workout (including bodyweight stuff and cardio of course).
but, that's for "regular" people who just want to get into shape.
for bodybuilding?
I use them for delts when I do lateral raises. the weight of the kb forces your hands into the proper position.
I use them for overhead 1 arm extentions (triceps) because the handle is comfortable and the weight is balanced. plus, I can do them palm's-up, rather than 'heel of the palm up' as with a dumbbell.
I use them sometimes for curls, for the same reason I use them for lateral's... the weighted bottom forces your palm flat, and you don't need to 'squeeze' the handle, you can do the curls with an open palm/hand and avoid forearm fatigue. the range of motion with curls is limited though, due to the size of the kb and it hitting the forearm, so i'll do the curls leaning forward or with a concentration curl (standing, since the large kb's with hit the floor if done seated).
-
Of course they are overrated ,there is a reason why people stopped using them in 1929.
