Title: Are kettlebells overrated?
Post by: OneMoreRep on July 01, 2012, 05:18:39 AM
Have you bodybuilding avant-gardes noticed the craze over kettlebells that has progressively grown over the last 3-4 years?

What's the story with kettlebells?

Are they a crossfit training fad?

Are they no more useful than flinging around a dumbbell with the same amount of weight?

Can any of you claim a discernible difference in your physique due to their use?

My equinox gym now has an entire section area of our gym dedicated to crossfit training with all sorts of gimmick tools and kettlebells have started to accumulate in large numbers.

It's a fashion boom right now... though I think it's already declining a bit....

Kettlebells are big in Russia. They even have had annual championships of kb lifting since the 60's.
Used also in training of soldiers so it sure must have some benefits.

Good for mobility, cardio, fat loss and abs.

OBVIOUSLY moving any weight will build muscle to a degree etc

They are not 'better' they are a different tool that if you want to try or enjoy doing you should.

They are NOT a magic wand though.

Well, they even have a kettlebell class at my gym that does about 45min - 1 hour of kettlebell routines.

I have used them out of curiosity - not for the cardio.

You will not build a big physique but for the average person you can build a good physique!

I like using KB's for higher rep cardio work....usually using a clock instead of counting reps.  The distribution of the weight feels different than a DB...try doing a high pull with one and not have it flip over and crack your wrist...

There used to be a kettleball training studio across the street from the gym I used to train at... it only lasted about 6 months.  Some of the exercises I've seen done with kettleballs seem foolish and dangerous to me, especially if you drop the fucking thing.

Although it may be beneficial in some ways, kettleball training is/was a fad.

A waste of time...stick to Barbells and Dumbbells. really think they will build you up like a heavy loaded bar?? I think it´s a thing to interest people more into cross fit bollocks and general fitness...Bodybuilding???  in my opinion ..NO

They are not designed for bbuilding.

They are meant to be a simple tool that can be used for many things.

High rep swings are very good for cardio!

You will not build a huge physique using KB's or a balanced one.
Title: Re: Are kettlebells overrated?
Post by: EH on July 01, 2012, 07:20:01 AM
i use'em with clients. you can train soccer moms and fat hockey dads with 2 sets of kettle bells 12 and 16kg, a yoga mat, a 3/4" band, a 2" rope, and a TRX strap all day. throw in some thai pads and sparing gloves maybe and a 30lb solid lead bar.

I'll use kettle bells myself for 1 arm overhead tricep extensions with a 24 or 30kg. easier on my wrists than a regular dumbell. that's about the only bodybuilding use for them.

any form of fitness is better than nothing and i am sure they will get you some results but for me i stick to my Barbell and Dumbbells and other free weight equipment i have in my home gym. I do not really think swinging a Kettlebell will work you like running for fat loss. I think they could/can be an aid to training but not for Bodybuilding and sculpting your body. If you like them then do it but i will stick to a more standard approach to building muscle.

But are probably fun if you want to take a break from your usual workout and focus more on fitness.

The principles of weight training have not changed over the years.. it´s about pushing more weight and PROGRESSION..sure you can do more reps/superset...etc,etc...but a plate loading Dumbbell is so much more versatile. I have had years ago great results from 2 plate loading dumbbells and a flat bench. I really loved the workouts i did with this very basic set up..the point being..it was progressive resistance and overload.

Pressing a 48kg (approx 110lbs) kb is much harder than pressing a 110lb DB

Cheick Kongo has definately matured as a fighter

He was quite strategic against Lavar, trying to avoid Lavars attacks as long as possible in the first round, tiring him out before he found an opening and used the groundgame (which is Lavars big weakness).

It wasn't CrossFit that turned into a fad. It was brilliant marketing by Pavel. Soon strength athletes began using them and adding to their strength training. You can go into almost any university and pro strength and conditioning weight room and find them. USC keeps a set at every platform. You won't find more hatred (besides me) for CrossFit than a strength and conditioning coach.
Title: Re: Are kettlebells overrated?

they have their place.

I use them extensively with my bootcamps and group training. 1-2 kettlebells per person and I can train them for an hour with a full body, HIIT-style workout (including bodyweight stuff and cardio of course).

but, that's for "regular" people who just want to get into shape.

for bodybuilding?

I use them for delts when I do lateral raises. the weight of the kb forces your hands into the proper position.

I use them for overhead 1 arm extentions (triceps) because the handle is comfortable and the weight is balanced. plus, I can do them palm's-up, rather than 'heel of the palm up' as with a dumbbell.

I use them sometimes for curls, for the same reason I use them for lateral's... the weighted bottom forces your palm flat, and you don't need to 'squeeze' the handle, you can do the curls with an open palm/hand and avoid forearm fatigue. the range of motion with curls is limited though, due to the size of the kb and it hitting the forearm, so i'll do the curls leaning forward or with a concentration curl (standing, since the large kb's with hit the floor if done seated).
