A Texas graduate student was standing in a restricted area for which he did not have clearance when he was pulled under an electrified fence and mauled by two chimpanzees at a South Africa chimp sanctuary, officials said today.
The attack on Andrew Oberle, 26, who was leading a tour, was likely prompted by chimpanzees wanting to protect their territory, said Eugene Cussons, director at the Jane Goodall Institute Chimpanzee Eden near Johannesburg, where Oberle had been researching for the summer.
During a lecture Thursday, Oberle crossed one of two fences separating him from the animals into a "no go zone," Cussons said. Oberle did not have clearance to be standing in the area past the public fence.
Oberle stepped on a rock, peeceived by the chimps as their terrority when he neared an electrified fence. Two male chimpanzees named Nikki and Amadeus reached underneath pulled him halfway under the fence by his foot. Oberle fought to not be pulled into the enclosure.
At this point, the sanctuary instituted its lockdown procedure, Cussons said.
The institute believes the chimpanzees were able to escape through the space made by Oberle's body. Nikki and Amadeus then dragged Oberle 30 meters into the public area and continued to maul him.
Armed guards were brought in to protect buildings, while keepers and manager rushed to the location.
Cussons said he parked 50 meters from the chimpanzees, exited the car and fired two rounds from a small handgun into the air and one into the ground.
But the gunfire did not not scare the chimps, and when they charged Cussons, he got back in his car, he said. Nikki jumped on the hood of the car and started bashing the windshield.
Cussons said he fired one round through the glass and injured the chimp. The other chimpanzee immediately became submissive and the chimps moved away, allowing Cussons and first responders to get to Oberle, he said.
First responder Lloyd Krause said when he got to Oberle, the University of Texas San Antonio student was stripped down and the only way he knew he was alive was that his chest was moving.
"The chimps were still out there. ... He was curled up in a little ball," Krause told ABC News.
Oberle, who is studying anthropology at the University of Texas at San Antonio, suffered huge cuts to his head and face. The mauling left his skull and facial bones exposed.
Oberle underwent six hours of surgery today. Doctors cleaned and stitched all of his wounds. Oberle is in stable condition and induced sedation, doctors said.
The vicious attack left Oberle with injures over his entire body. His right upper arm is broken, while his lower right arm muscle and ligaments are torn and exposed to the bone. Oberle's left arm was mauled and he lost fingers on both hands.
One testicle was ripped off and he suffered deep lacerations to both legs and lost several toes.
"When you thought about it afterwards and realized just how much danger there was, the extent of his injuries, and the fact that he just shouldn't be here anymore after all of that, it sunk in then," Krausse said.
"The doctors are satisfied at the moment ... with the patient's condition," said Carmen Savva, the hospital manager overseeing Oberle's recovery in Nelspruit. "He's responding better than expected."
Oberle's friends in Texas are raising funds for his care, hoping he can one day get back to doing what he loves.
"He's not going to quit," said friend Anthony Reimherr. "He never gives up."

I'm OK when animals are babies and all cute, but some folks outthere don't have the common sense to know that when these beasts get bigger, it's time to start treating them with respect and keep in mind that they are "Wild" animals. I've seen Lion cubs at the Zoo before and they're some of the most cuddly, beautiful animals and so are the polar bear cubs. but when these animals are past the "cute" stage, sooner or later,we become prey to them

I cannot imagine going to the zoo without a MFing glock in the fanny pack.
Honestly, my good man, fuck the Glock. I'm a die-hard Heckler and Koch man myself, admittedly, but I'm thinking caliber here. Remember when that chimp tore the shit out of that woman about a year ago, ripping her face and hands off?
A cop opened up on that piece of shut dung-flinger with his sidearm and scored four shots, none of which seemed to faze the thing (its owner had already stabbed the monster in the back with a butcher knife, FWIW). The chimp saundered off and died 20 min. later.
Going up against an enraged chimp, I'd want a BAR or fully-automatic AK or AR to mag-dump into the fucker.
You'd honestly think a 9mm to the skull would get the job done, but unless I was a pistol-shooting champ, there's no way I'd take that chance against a fast-moving, charged up crazy animal.
-
Any self-respecting Getbigger would have dropped those chimps with a lightning fast combo and beat their asses, forcing them to understand the power of evolution and causation superiority.

Police kill rampaging chimp after Las Vegas escape
By KEN RITTER and MICHELLE RINDELS, AP
Fri Jul 13, 4:00 PM UTC
Authorities say they had no choice but to kill one rampaging chimpanzee and tranquilize another after the primates escaped a Las Vegas-area backyard and tore through a neighborhood, pounding on cars and jumping into at least one vehicle.
No people were hurt when the agitated animals escaped their enclosure about 10 a.m. Thursday and started running through yards and opening car doors in a community of horse pens, palm trees and tile-roofed, landscaped homes.
Area resident David Plunkett said he saw the male chimpanzee leap on top of a police car — with its lights on and an officer inside — before the animal jumped to the ground and headed into a vacant lot.
"We tried to establish a perimeter until the experts arrived," said Officer Marcus Martin, a Las Vegas police spokesman. "But at least for the first animal, they couldn't get there in time."
The Las Vegas-area chimps were on the loose for about 30 minutes with police trying to corral them before a male primate believed to weigh more than 150 pounds was shot and killed. The other chimp, a female, was shot with a tranquilizer dart but continued to roam the area for several more minutes before she was hit with a second dart.
She succumbed in neighbor Tony Paolone's 3-acre backyard. Martin said she was returned to her cage shortly after noon.
"They got out, and the police did what they had to do," said Paolone, a paving company worker who was at work during the commotion and was prevented for a time from returning to his house while police investigated afterward.
Paolone, who keeps 12 horses on his property, said he knew the chimps lived behind a home on his street for several years. He said he never saw them loose and he never felt threatened.
Clark County spokesman Dan Kulin said the owner had proper permits to keep the animals on the property in unincorporated county territory outside Las Vegas city limits, as well as a license from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Martin said police were called at 10:13 a.m. and officers saw the two chimps ambling through the neighborhood, striking cars and climbing at one point into the driver side of an empty black sport utility vehicle and then out the passenger side. A trainer offered the animals food and tried to lure them back into captivity.
Police warned residents through Twitter not to leave their vehicles or homes and to avoid the area where the "dangerous" primates were roaming free. Martin said at least one police car was dented by the animals pounding on it.
A woman called 911 saying a large chimpanzee was on top of her car, Martin said. She told dispatchers she had her windows rolled up and her doors locked.
Plunkett, 36, said he was alerted to the commotion by the sound of a helicopter. He estimated the animals to be about 4 feet tall. Adult chimps can be as tall as 5 1/2 feet when standing upright.
Martin said police officers tried to corral the animals to await animal control officials, but the male chimp turned toward the gathering crowd. A veteran officer with a shotgun killed it a little before 10:45 a.m. The officer's name wasn't immediately made public.
Plunkett said he heard three shots. Helicopter video showed the animal lying face down in the middle of a road, surrounded by animal control trucks and police cars.
"We have an exotic animals policy. It's to treat them as humanely as we can," Martin said. "But immediately you recall the woman who has no face because of a chimp. The officer knew they were dangerous animals and he was the last line of defense with citizens behind him."
Martin referred to a 2009 attack on a woman who was permanently blinded and when her nose, lips, eyelids and hands were mauled by a chimp before police killed the animal outside a home in Stamford, Conn.
Two adult chimpanzees also attacked a U.S. student last month after he entered their enclosure at a primate sanctuary in South Africa.

She might get this much money. She did have her hands and face ripped off. However if she does she should pay the medical bills she has already racked up.
http://xfinity.comcast.net/articles/news-national/20120810/US.Chimpanzee.Attack.Lawsuit/
HARTFORD, Conn. — The state attorney general's office urged a key official on Friday to dismiss a $150 million claim filed by a woman who was mauled and disfigured by a chimpanzee that went berserk in 2009.
But the victim, who has amassed millions of dollars in medical and other bills, said she's holding out hope the claims commissioner will ultimately grant her permission to sue the state's Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, which she holds responsible for not seizing the animal despite a state biologist's warning it was dangerous.
"I hope and pray that the commissioner will give me my day in court," Charla Nash told reporters following the hearing. "And I also pray that I hope this never happens to anyone else again. It is not nice."
Nash, 57, was attacked in February 2009 by a friend's 200-pound pet chimpanzee after its owner asked Nash to help lure it back into her house in Stamford, Conn. The animal, named Travis, ripped off Nash's nose, lips, eyelids and hands before being shot to death by police.
Nash was blinded in the attack. She underwent a face and double hand transplant in 2011, but the hands failed to thrive because of complications and were removed. She said Friday she still hopes to get a double hand transplant.
Assistant Attorney General Maite Barainca told Claims Commissioner J. Paul Vance Jr. that Nash deserves sympathy for her plight and admiration for the courage she has shown in dealing with her situation, but argued that the state should not be held liable for actions of the privately owned animal.
"There is no claim that the state directly caused Ms. Nash's injuries. The state did not own or possess the chimp that attacked her" and played no role in letting the chimp loose that day in 2009 on private property, said Barainca.
Charles Willinger, Nash's attorney, said his client lives in a nursing home outside Boston "in total darkness," "without eyes, without hands." He said she is "permanently scarred, emotionally, physically" and will never be able to see her daughter again or hold her hand. He said Nash "endures loneliness, despair and suffering beyond anyone's comprehension in this room," and urged Vance to be the "conscience of this state" when deciding whether to allow her to sue.
Willinger said millions of dollars in bills are mounting.
"She's on I think 17 different medications. She needs operations. She needs therapy. One day she's going to need special accommodations in her home. She's going to need 24-hour care," he said, adding how no one knows how long Nash's face transplant will last. "There are tremendous, significant bills and it's a situation of really quality of life."
Nash told described her feelings of loneliness to reporters.
"I miss home," said Nash, who wore sunglasses and a turquoise top, and was accompanied by her brother Steve. "You know, when you're in a facility, you're alone. It's hard. But I'm thankful that I'm still here."
Vance is expected to issue a decision on the state's motion to dismiss the case within 30 days. If he rules in favor of the state, Nash cannot proceed with a hearing on the merits of her claim. She could, however, appeal to the General Assembly and ask state legislators to overrule the commissioner's decision.
If, however, Vance denies the state's motion to dismiss, a trial-like hearing will be held before him. Vance would then have to decide whether to allow Nash to sue the DEEP in superior court.
Willinger contends that Travis the chimp had been on the state agency's radar since 2003, when it escaped from its owner and ran loose in Stamford. It was the only chimpanzee in the state and was commonly referred to as "the gorilla in Stamford."
State officials have contended they did not have the authority to seize the animal.
Several months before the attack, a state biologist warned state officials in a memo that the chimpanzee could seriously hurt someone if it felt threatened, saying "it is an accident waiting to happen."
In October 2008, the biologist warned that the chimpanzee had reached adult maturity and "is very large and tremendously strong." The biologist said, "I am concerned that if he feels threatened or if someone enters his territory, he could seriously hurt someone."
