What animals did you look after and how shit was the pay?

Worked in a very large zoo, worked with nearly all animasl from Tigers to Lions to Elephants to Spiders Reptiles and fish.
As an apprentice you alwayas start with the fish, the first month or so you do nothing but clean windows :P
Pay is shit as it can be - even worse as an apprentice but the work is so rewarding.

did you read Mein Kampf to the animals you kept? did they disappoint you like your son did?

No, but I read the Turner diaries to a monkey once and he was offended.

Without problems happening can you put in one cage white gorillas, black gorillas, and jewish gorillas?

Lions are okay they are scared mostly and only when they have a chance or are provoked will charge, Elephants are dangerous
as fuck, small cats like Leopards are the most dangerous tho.

We only had one guy who would go into the cage of the gorillas - their sheer size makes them very dangerous.,
Believe it or not Owls are fuck dangerous too - you were not allowed to enter their cage without a helmet on.

I've also handled large crocodiles often, they are okay as long as you have somebody watching your back, you wouldn't touch a salt water croc of course (which we had one) but the Florida swamp aligators are okay, the female was in great shape and would constantly try to sneak up on you from behind when you had to get in to clean windows.

on average are animals treated well and given good food or it's like in most circus? fuck I hate those places  >:(

Zoo's lively hood is based on that the animals are in peek condition, everybody these days (in the western world) feels a little bit guilty when they see caged in animals so at least they want to see them groomed and in good condition.
I the zoo that I worked most of the time but many other zoos I had dealings with they went to extreme length to make sure that the animals environment in the zoo matches very closely with the actual environment the animals are from - also that the animals have resting places from visitors, you wouldn't believe what the usual visits do to see the gorillas move and the lions roar, they have a very narrow minded impression what the animals are supposed to be doing when they are there and are disappointed when the croc is (as most do all day) is resting - so you need to create hiding spots for the animals so they can retreat and don't get too stressed.

Zoo's today are extremely important to repopulate the world with endangered animals and my zoo was heavily involved in various breeding programs.

Animals are always treated very well, you start having a relationship with them after a while, I was working for close to a half a year with a group of lemurs...

There was one male who none of the others liked, he was old and he was pushed around and he was tired defending himself, so they seperated him - and he had his happy little enclosure which he used to taunt the other group, I got quite attached to him and every morning first you do you go to him and kinda "shoot the shit" lol.

Tell you a great story which happened before I started as a zoo keeper, we had a salt water croc, it was very very big and fat - they get quite fat if they don't move much and are not put on a diet.

Like i said before most visitors have a very narrow minded and uneducted idea what animals are "supposted" todo, they cannot wrap their head around the fact that these animals live their, in their mind the animals are there to perform for them and at 18:00 Pm they pack their shit and head home.

So a female visitor was unhappy that the salt water croc wasn't moving - so she started throwing pennies at the crock, which the big boy didn't even feel.
She had her purse around her neck and it was dangling inside the enclosure when she was trying to throw more pennies.
Of course she didn't know the speed these crocs can move and that they can litteraly throw their upper body half of their size up in the air.

That fucking crock grabbed her handbag faster than she could react - WAMMMM - and she was hanging half way in and out - the crock furiously pulling and rocking.
She only survived because a zookeeper close by was keeping an eye on her and like any good zookeeper he had a knife and ZIPPPPPP!!!
cut the handbag.
She had brusing and all but was unhurt - the crock ate the whole handbag like a big fuck you ;D - Papers driving license money the whole lot.

;D ;D

Yeah I saw that as well - its not uncommon if you hand reel animals.

there are no animals that are easy to have contact with, the easiest would be fish probably but even there some of fish are extremely sensitive and expensive and dangerous.

Do you believe wild animals should be caged in a zoo?

Today no "wild" animals as in an animal that were capture from the wild are displayed in zoo's, certainly not in the western world - The animals that are displayed are animals that are born in captivity - there is as a difference.

Also I categorically refuse to visit or pay for an entry to the seaworlds were they have dolphins and Orcas, these animals are only displayed for the amusement and show tricks, there is no other purpose to capture these animals but for financial gain.
Since Orcas are notoriously hard to breed in captivity it is not uncommon or has been in the past to capture them from the wild.

Resist the urge to go to these places at all costs - I have no greater wish than to see an Orca, but I be fucked if I pay these organizations.

Fish were pretty boring as I said you do a lot of cleaning windows and cleaning tanks from the top - I didn't had the passion I have now for aquariums so I kinda didn't like working there.
But I loved the reptiles, we had all kinda snakes and lizards - Rattlesnakes - Cobras - anacondas - its a lot of action.
The thing is you always do stuff were you either catch yourself in the middle or after it go - THE FUCK AM I DOING UP HERE?!?! Like you clean the environment of the wild goats and its high up its early in the morning a bit frosty and you go... uh better not fall here.

Bird of pray are so hard to work with and requires a very good understanding of the actual animals, they are very sensitive and its so hard to get them breeding.

That is awesome. But why wouldn't some sort of greeter make sure people understand that they are invading on the animals home and that most of the time they just rest etc? I use to go to the San Diego zoo and it seemed around every corner, they were educating the public on the animals.

Okay I tell you a story about elephants, they are THE most dangerous animals in a zoo - in fact I was in africa and the guides were shitting themselves when they saw an elephant bull in the bush and we were too far away from the car to run - extremely unpredictable extremely intelligent and take NO SHIT from you.

okay here's the story..
My zoo had some elephant off spring, a little calf called susie - elephant babies are amongst the cutest things on this planet - the way they run and their ears are flopping around and they are just really a lot of fun.
But elephants are smart and they are just like kids you need to teach them to behave, in the wild the mantra (female leader of the herd) and others in the herd who enjoy high ranking do that job - they show the calf how to behave, elephant herd behavior is very complex.
In the zoo environment the head zookeeper for the elphants has to take on the role of the mantra, which is very hard and difficult and dangerous.

Now..

So susie was this cute little elephant baby, happy go lucky. News papers of course went wild and showed pictures of her and we had more than the usual crowds visiting the zoo especially to see her.
The problem started when Susie as every little rebellious child miss behaved and the head zookeeper had to naturally showed her her boundaries - here's the line little one you cross that you get a little smacked - he carried a bamboo stick with him he would use to guide the elephants (never use a hook they do that in circus and its disgusting) - so he would give her a little tap on the trunk and their trunk is sensitive so she didn't like it of course but she learned a lesson - don't do that I told you not to do that.

Of course your usual soccer moms when ballistic - people complained left right and center about animal abuse etc. the news papers lapped up that story and there was no way to explain why it had to be done.

End of the story is - the head zookeeper was ordered not to discipline the calf, she turned out a complete BITCH of an elephant who knows no boundaries, she nearly killed me once when I let them all in and I stood beside the gate, she wouldn't just charge you but she would sneak up on you, now lol you would ask how can an elephant sneak up on you, well what she would do is to slowly and slowly ever so slowly come closer and closer until you are trapped than she would put her body against you - crush you, I just got away by the nick of time because I payed attention to the other animals - close call I never made that mistake again.

I was not there when the elephant was born I only met her when she was already grown up, but it was one of these stories that the guys would tell each other to show their contempt to the usually dumb joeys and mamas that haven't a clue about animals and think every animals is on this planet to be loved.

i held an orangutan baby once - they had to take her away from her mother because she didn't want her - was the cutest thing every, heart breaking, they have a natural reflex that they would cling on to you when you hold them.

That's the problem wih Americans and animals, especially dogs... many dogs are spoiled brats due to their owners thinking that dogs qutomatically know what right from wrong is, or no boundaries.

People think bears are some cuddly animal--hell no, they are dangerous as hell...I'm  scared of them.

Bears are fine as long as you give them fucking space, that goes for any animal, most people have no idea what it means to respect an animal, its not the same respect you would give a human, respect for animals means that you stay the fuck back give the animals as much space as it wants dont corner and bother it.

That the majority of their job is to cuddle and hug and play with little animals - that's the first thing they make sure apprentice understand its a hard job pysical labor shuffling shit for 90% of the time, its a lot of cleaning.
Like I remember one day we had to carry sacks of salt for the huge salt water aqauriums from a huge pile all the way down to the cellar - lots of stuff like that.

Most of the girls that apply for a job leave after a few days of work.

Why you leave the zoo hustle playa?

Its the usual grass is greener on the other side, wanted todo something different and got mixed up with the wrong crowd type of thing.

We had stonefish...

One of them died, and they are really fucking expensive you cannot just buy them from the next animal store, so with all expensive animals an autopsy is performed.
One of the younger zookeepers was asked to drop the dead fish to the clinic - and he fucked around with the fish and got stung ;D
Even dead he nearly died ;D

Kangaroo escapes with help of fox and boar    :o :o  :D

A kangaroo is on the run in Germany after breaking out of a wildlife park, with a fox and a wild boar as his suspected accomplices.

Michael Hoffmann, assistant head of the Hochwildschutzpark Hunsrück west of Frankfurt, said on Monday the male kangaroo was one of three that escaped overnight on Saturday with the inadvertent help of the menagerie that lives in the local woods.

Hoffmann said the kangaroos got out of their enclosure after a young fox snuck into the park and dug a hole next to the cage's fencing. Two of the three were then able to escape the park entirely through another hole dug by a wild boar under the exterior fence.

"We've got two of them back; now we're just looking for the third."
