Ronnie could have inserted anyone's name in that sentence, let alone Heath. In his prime, no one could have ever beaten him. No one has yet to come along that would have beaten a prime Coleman. In his best shape, he's the best there's ever been.

If that wasn't just a ghost writer talking smack under Coleman's name, Phil must've bothered Ronnie behind the scenes in some way, Ronnie's always been very mellow and respectful when discussing other guys.

No, but if he was in the audience, he was probably thinking it. Complete with Bill Cosby voice over.

Ron is broke down, and somebody in the bbing community needs to tell him that face to face. Or maybe on getbig.

Ronnie does look like a fraction of his former self.  But SOME people that grew up inspired by him would still rather see him posing than a top NPC amateur no-name with a better physique.   Kinda like the way Joe Montata would have longer lines than some freshman named Johnny Football holding the heisman.  Even if Montana couldn't throw the ball 10 yards, people would rather pay to toss the ball around and get an autograph, because of his experience, achievement, and the connection they made with that athlete via watching them compete and win.

The sad part for Phil, is that no matter how big, ripped, proportioned, separated he gets, he'll always be narrow and there's nothing he can do to correct it and he'll always be remembered for that.  That has got to wear on the mans nerves knowing he'll never be the best all time.

poor example, very poor in fact cause the 90's is when bodybuilders stopped progressing. One can even argue that it has regressed. Either way any of the 90's guy can compete today relatively successfully, I mean Branch winning the Arnold is proof of this. Now the guys of the 70's and 80's would get slaughtered in any ifbb line of the last 20 years. C'mon McWay keep your argument reasonable.

poor example, very poor in fact cause the 90's is when bodybuilders stopped progressing.

My argument is reasonable. I've heard bodybuilders say this, time and time again. Go back 20 years and read some articles, with bodybuilders from the 70s and 80s. Go back 40 years and you'll hear guys from the 50s and 60s say the same thing about bodybuilders of the 70s and 80s.

They almost mirror what Ronnie said about Heath and his contemporaries: "We trained harder!" "They all look the same!" "We had more comraderie!" "They're too drugged up". etc.

Bodybuilders from a certain era (along with their fans) think they're the greatest of all time, that their predecessors are too small and their successors (though perhaps bigger) aren't really better.
And, no, any of the 90s guys cannot compete successfully today. Many of them would be relegated to the 212 class today.

Not even close.  Even though Ronnie's mouth looks like a prolapsed butthole, he still smokes Heath and Dorian. ;D

Branch is the same guy that says other pros eat so much in the offseason that they look like water buffalos and he likes to stay lean offseason  ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

Ronnie was the best because the IFBB judging criteria sucks.

Not in that shot he doesn't. He's too big, not sharp enough and loses some of his shape. Pare him down to his 2001 ASC look and it's a different story.

Besides, Phil Heath is (relatively speaking) just getting started. And he beat the guy that knocked Ronnie off the throne.

No no no, Ronnie is saying he would win, that's it, I know what you are saying but you are twisting Ronnie's words and putting them in one big category. Look it is this simple. Ronnie said he would win against Phil on stage, no one has ever said that about Ronnie prior to him, you said that they did, your statement is false, no one from a different era has claimed they would beat Ronnie, no one.

I have the article, sitting right in front of me.

Bodybuilders of today aren't like the bodybuilders of our day. Physiques were a lot better in our time. This era coming up here, I'm not impressed with nobody. There's nothing that's 'Wow' about their physiques. Not the shape, not the symmetry. Nothing blows me away about these guys".......Gee! I've never heard an old-school bodybuilder say stuff like that before.

As for nobody else saying that about Ronnie, you forget two things: One, most of the other Mr. Os were so far removed, that they really wouldn't care. With that said, Franco Columbu said, in an article in MuscleMag, that if he, Arnold, and Sergio competed in the 90s, THEY would dominate the current competitors.

Two, Ronnie's immediate predecessor BEAT HIM, head up, multiple times on the O stage. He really doesn't have to say anything.

You are totally missing the point. Everyone knows that all bodybuilders think their era physiques are better but they are not talking about a judges's perspective, they are talking about the preference, 80's bodybuilders know they would get slaughtered on stage with todays bodybuilders but they still think they look better preference wise not judging wise, see the difference?.

So Ronnie is not talking about what you are referring to, he is talking from the judges perspective he would beat Phil and it is true he would from a judges perspective, all IFBB judges will confirm this as they are always stating that there will never be another Ronnie. So Ronnie is not doing what others have done before him. Unless you can show me a quote saying that someone is claiming to have been able to beat Ronnie on stage then you can not say Ronnie is doing the same thing as everyone else, it is different in everyway especially if what he is saying is true.

Except a prime Yates.

I don't need to show you a quote. I showed you a guy WHO ACTUALLY BEAT RONNIE on stage: Dorian Yates.

Actually, if you want to split hairs, Jay Cutler and Dexter Jackson beat Ronnie on stage, too.

But, since those two are still considered modern competitors, even though they (Dex, in particular) is in the twilight of his career, I'll stick with "old-school bodybuilders".

Furthermore, I already gave an example: The article I referenced with Franco Columbu. That was done in the mid-90s, during Ronnie's competitive years, around the time Ronnie won his first show.

As for judges' perspective, we've seen various phases of Ronnie Coleman. We've yet to see the full spectrum of Phil Heath. He hasn't even hit 30, yet.

Besides, with what 90s bodybuilder is Heath often compared? Flex Wheeler. And we all know that Ronnie and Flex had their battles in the 90s. Ronnie's first win over Flex was by one point. Flex beat him twice that same year.

I agree there will never be another Ronnie. But, then again, there will never be another Dorian, another Arnold, another Sergio, or another Lee (Haney).

Ronnie could have inserted anyone's name in that sentence, let alone Heath. In his prime, no one could have ever beaten him. No one has yet to come along that would have beaten a prime Coleman. In his best shape, he's the best there's ever been.

QFT!

When he was competing the REAL contest was for 2nd place

and to split hairs even further, guys like Porter Cotrell, Charles Clairemont, 14 guys at the 92 Olympia etc etc beat ronnie on stage too.

everyone beat him before his peak.

no one could touch him at his peak. including the physiques that beat him prior, like dorian flex shawn kevin etc

simple.

ronnie's best was better than everyone elses best.

but his best didn't show up on stage for his whole career, like some people somehow expect to happen.. ::)

above, you can see why in a simple span of 2 years, ronnie went from losing to everyone to being the greatest physique ever seen onstage..

Hardly!! Was Ronnie's best better than Jay Cutler's best (2009)?

Was Ronnie's best better than Dorian's best (1993)?

Ronnie didn't compete against the 2009 version of Jay, nor the 1993 version of Yates. So, it can be said that Ronnie didn't beat Jay at HIS peak; nor did he beat Dex at HIS peak (which some claim is this past Masters Olympia); nor did he beat Dorian at HIS peak.

ronnie would have beaten 2009 Jay---Jay was only good from the front...in fact, I think Jay's back was better when he was competing against Ronnie.

I'm not so sure about that. Jay's back was terrific in 2009. His legs were unreal. The only version of Coleman that could have beaten that version of Cutler would be either the 1999 Olympia or the 2001 ASC.

terrific back and Jay cutler shouldn't be in the same sentence. He still had wrinkles in his back.
Jay looked great that year, but it was only because Jay before that never had the hardness and striations.
It's kinda like how Ronnie of 1998, wasn't the Ronnie of previous yrs, like Shawn had said, Ronnie was the "most improved" that year.
And Jay can only thank Dex (and the judges) for his 2009 condition---because it was put in Jay's head to come in harder.

Just like Ronnie can thank Gunter (and the judges) for his 2003 look.

His back was far better in 2009 than it was in 2006, when he beat Ronnie. It was the rear double bicep shot that pretty much told the story that Jay's time had arrived and Ronnie was done.
