http://news.yahoo.com/playstation-4-xbox-720-could-cost-just-350-213041318.html
Sony (SNE) and Microsoft (MSFT) are both expected to announce their next-generation gaming consoles at the Electronics Entertainment Expo in June, or even a little before then. While we have seen rumored specs for both the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox 720, one thing that has escaped us is a possible price tag. In a research note to investors on Monday, Colin Sebastian of Baird Equity Research suggested that both consoles could retail for between $350 and $400 in the U.S., Games Industry International reported. The analyst revealed that during the Consumer Electronics Show last week he spent time “with a number of companies involved in video game development and distribution,” who informed him that the next-generation consoles will be “largely built from ‘off the shelf’ high-end PC components, along with hybrid physical/digital distribution models, enhanced voice controls and motion sensing, and broad multi-media capabilities.”
[More from BGR: HTC One SV review]
Sebastian believes that “a PC-based architecture (Intel chips in the case of Xbox) should have a number of advantages over custom-developed silicon.” In his opinion, there will be less of a “learning curve” for software developers compared to completely new technology, and the cost of production and retail price points should be lower than prior console launches.
[More from BGR: Dell’s bold plan to reinvent itself: A USB-sized PC that gives access to Windows, Mac OS, Chrome OS]
Microsoft launched the Xbox 360 in 2005 with a top end price of $399, while Sony released the PlayStation 3 a year later for $499 and $599 respectively.
“It will be easier to build online services around PC chip architecture, including flexible business models (free-to-play, subscriptions) and multi-media (over the top) content offerings,” the analyst added. “For Microsoft, this design will also allow for more integration with Windows 8 and Windows Mobile devices.”
Sebastian expects Sony to launch the PlayStation 4 in October and Microsoft to launch the Xbox 720 in November.

little late on the news stud, both have been expected for a while now this Winter/fall.The 720/xbox is expected to be more powerful, with built in kinect and some projector nonsense.

PS4 will not launch... I guarantee it.
720 will launch, I have seen and used the dev kit already.

That is nothing, bill gates personally called me and sent me a custom made xbox 720 which upset sony ceo who sent me a ps4 while urging me to destroy the 720 but of course i am not going to do it.

How much of a graphics upgrade will there be?

Sony hasn't learned shit. Their PS3 didn't sell because of the high price so they are pricing it high again?
What they need to do is fix the fucking fan noise and heating system. I use my PS3 mainly as an entertainment unit. I barely play games on it, but the fucking fan noise during movies is annoying.

I was about to type the same thing, but mine was not based on the inside info of the developer's kit.
The big factor was the I heard that the XBox division at MS was on complete lockdown, and Major Nelson's been counting down to E3, which he never does.
-
Come on tu holmes and others. Specs? Inside info? whatever.

I will speculate that Bungie's Destiny will be one of the major launch titles, but it's just a guess.
Guessing blu-ray, full 1080p, anti aliassing, 3D? Tu?

Developer kit is just like a pc with the programs on it to emulate whatever hardware the machine uses. Its possible to make a game for a console and still have no clue what hardware the final product contains.
-
Really, I thought they were going to be very similar hardware wise and the only difference was software based.

PS....XBOX 360 >> PS3 ;D

The 720 will be bluray... will be true 1080p... Will also be capable of 240hz.. It will be running an AMD GPU I believe so it can do 3D if you develop for that... Dev kits had 8 Cores and16GB of memory.

The PS3 does that now.

The PS3 does that now.
The PS3 does 1080p, true... The amount of cores is a bit sketchy since the GPU and the CPU are infused... the PS3 has VERY little ram... Only 256MB to be real... It actually causes lots of development headaches.
The 8 Cores will be much much faster than what the PS3 does today... The CELL processor will no longer be used anywhere... Guaranteed.

eye candy graphics don't mean shit, if developers don't develop REAL physics engines for the sports titles. i don't own the current models and won't be purchasing the new ones.
ea sports - if its in the games we don't put it in our games ::)

You can blame that on developers pumping out sports titles every single year like clockwork. No time to develop a real physics engine or any real changes to the game.

i agree look how many shitty games there are for xbox i mean TONS AND TONS Of shitty shitty games,
they have just a good shooting games , a boxing game and a driving game all other games are shit and or those lame puzzel games or lame first person adventure games that are all graphics and knowledge of the game (what im saying is those games where your walking through beating up 50 lame enemies that are easy kills, i want to jump right into a difficult game, if its and adventure...i like a game that challenges reflexes and timing
they need bigger controlers with more buttons for games requiring alot of technique now that would be fun, like in the boxing, or a kick boxing game.
the basketball games suck ass, they need bigger controllers with more buttons to fine tune a shot or a layup not just pressing the button ::)
-
i remember buying nba2k11 damn that game really sucked it had nothing to do with skill and all to do with what team you picked
-
i have the slim ps3 and make really no noise, but i really only use it to watch Blu-rays. I have only a few games on it about 15 or so, i just like The Xbox a whole lot better have about 100+ games on it, i like the layout of their front end, the Online Gaming network, and espcially like the controller feel , i prefer the big fat xbox360 controller over the Playstation controller mainly

Nails,
I agree. Halo 4 IMO killed COD SOP2 (Call of Duty Spec Ops 2). Fantastic game. Great story. For a six or seven year old console, graphics kicked ass also.

Black Ops 2.
You sure you actually played the game? Pretty hard to fuck up the name of the game if you actually play it.

I just killed my WoW and SWTOR subscriptions. I'm a little too busy for all that these days.

Yup. Got sucked into it years ago by a roommate (after swearing up and down I'd never play it because it was fucking gay)...
It's like fucking e-crack.
I actually saw someone trolling trade chat the other day with such phrases as "equipona" and "Trenbalogna", no shit.

I like SWTOR.... but all the sudden it just died and everyone stopped playing. It was odd.

I swore I wouldn't play it either, but then some guys at work saw the Southpark "Make Love not Warcraft" and they started... So they pulled me into it... That was it... I fucking played until last summer and only JUST THIS WEEK cancelled my subscription.

I could never get into it because the grapics are fucking horrible. You would think that a mega-game like WOW would freshen up the graphics a tad. They are barely better than 16-bit :-\

lol you might be the only person in the world that says call of duty is bad but medal of honor is good
i think both consoles will launch within the year, notice how all the big game titles this year have a release date well before the holiday season?
that's because they are getting those games out of the way before the next gen games are released

CoD up until MW1 was oustanding (I started playing around CoD 2), and it's been downhill ever since. MW3 was terrible. This years MoH I enjoyed far more than MW3, for me, it was just a better game everywhere.
Apparently I'm the only one that doesn't enjoy sprinting in a straight line down pre-determined paths until I ran into someone else. That got old for me about 4 CoD's ago.

A lot of the MoH criticism was due to the fact that we didn't give out and free copies... Don't let them fool you, those game blogs are whiny.

I don't even read reviews anymore... I find that the big name titles ALWAYS get top rated scores even if everyone hates them.
I used to read PC Gamer religiously when I was kid, back when the reviews were honest and they had no problem giving a big name game a bad review.

Sales =/= quality, only power of name recognition.
Every dumbass and their brother LOVES anything CoD, half of them have no fucking idea why they like it, they just like it because it's "CoD". I had a friend play CoD 2 (Not MW2), recently, and he was blown away by how good it was compared to the MW serious, especially considering its over 10 years old.

CoD2 was a 360 launch title and was fantastic. It felt epic and big. The MW pieces of the franchise are done by the same developer as CoD2. MW and MW2 were awesome, especially the multiplayer. Now, even the MP is getting stale. The last three titles - BO and BO 2, and MW 3, I didn't even play the campaigns, so for the heck of it, I played BO2 campaign last week. A third of the way into it, I said "I've played this game 1000x" and went back to MP.

If the next gen xbox had blu-ray, i wouldn't buy both a new xbox and ps4. Stuck it up and lease it bill gates >:(

I know Microsoft finally started turning a profit on xbox 360 like a year ago but what about Sony and PS3?!?!
I bet the thing is still costing Sony money to this day.

yup over 2 year later.

Battlefield 3 is by far the best FPS military game. Even Multiplayer can be really immersive instead of the usual run and gun that is found on the trite COD series. I still play EAs Battlefield 1943 as well for Xbox Arcade and find it enjoyable in comparison to any COD product.
-
Red Dead Redemption 2 I think is slated for the 720. Can`t wait!

adonis you got your ass beat on fight night champion , never to play it again, what have you said about your self? ;D
right now im training sweede an he really is pathetic at the game

All consoles lose money in the beginning... The money is in the game sales.

I remember getting my Atari .....came with one game....COMBAT
Two tanks shooting at each other with a blip( bullet) you could watch creep across the screen. Then when the first NINTINDO came out we got one of those about a hundred years after most other kids....we thought that was the shit. DUCK HUNT
-
im getting fat playing video games thats for damn sure. life was good when i didnt have a tv and smoked weed and did shit

Except for Nintendo made ones. I know for certain both Gamecube and the Wii were making money for each one sold on launch day.

I genuinely enjoyed both COD: Black Ops 2 and Halo 4.... (Halo 4 more to be honest - The campaign was fun, and the graphics were greatly greatly improved for a game that runs on such an old console)... COD is COD... you pretty much know what you are getting.... its the same formula over and over, and you either enjoy it or you don't.
If you guys want a really good game with an AMAZING story from a relatively small developer look into getting: Spec Ops: The Line (Think of it as a modern day Apocalpse Now!)
If you guys want non-cliche Blockbusters though look into: Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Far Cry 3 (And be prepared to set aside a big chunk of time whenever you sit down to play them ;D )
-
You cats do know that all, ALL X-boxes can hear what you are saying. That information is being used against you.
-
im getting fat playing video games thats for damn sure. life was good when i didnt have a tv and smoked weed and did shit
this is good(minus the weed).
throw your xbox360/ps3/computer games out the window! nothing but a waste of time.
-
Except for Nintendo made ones. I know for certain both Gamecube and the Wii were making money for each one sold on launch day.
They did... Only because they used inferior and already cheaper parts.
Not that there is anything wrong with that.. Nintendo has always been technologically inferior when it comes to their hardware, but they innovate with controls and other things and have always done more with the hardware than anyone else.
They can make less hardware look better and sound better than any other company on earth.
-
I look forward to the new Xbox because the rumor is that fallout 4 is being made for it.

This is a correct statement... It is going to take DAYS to WEEKS to complete at 100%.
It is going to be the biggest game ever.
Rumor has it, it will take 2 BluRay discs to hold all of the game.

I rarely play video games, but I fucking love every GTA game. Even just exploring the map is fun as hell, even for a non gamer.
I remember being fucking amazed by San Andreas, so I'm excited as hell about V.
Do the Grand Theft Auto games pretty much set the standard? It seems to me (could be wrong), that everything from the GTA games is copied into games that come out later?

Yes I believe the Wii and the Gamecube are the ONLY consoles to ever make money... However, does that number equate to the total amount of money made by people buying twice as many PS3s? (Not that they did, just food for thought).
The Wii did very well sales wise due to it's price point, but the Gamecube was the worst selling console of it's generation (Of the big 3 at the time), and as such, may not have made as much as Sony or Microsoft due to their high volume of game sales.

Nintendo is for children. I cannot stand Japanese Based games for the most part. They tend to be button mashers with cartoon like graphics and very thin on story. The only exception is the Metal Gear franchise. Other than that, its pretty much anime button bangers.
-

Lol no, no way will they make the game so big it needs 6+ 8gb discs for the 360 and neither will they give the ps3 anything extra (hd movies, higher quality textures etc) over the 360.
-
I prefer PC gaming -- it's a very pleasurable experience building your own machine that can play all the genres available on consoles and then some. Consoles are superior as far as offline multiplayer is concerned, however (though it seems that console developers are increasingly leaving offline multiplayer options out of their games).
Here are some pretty pictures to ameliorate the inevitable butthurtedness of the inherently inferior console drones:

Not in my opinion. The gameplay really hasn't changed much from version to version, and the controls for the cars are always shoddy, at best. It's been the same game with a different story. Love GTA III, and LOVED Vice City. After that, the games got repetitive to me, especially any race against the clock.

All I know is I'm sure Sony and MS are crapping the bed about Valve's plans with PC gaming. If you don't think they aren't SERIOUSLY concerned then you don't know what you are talking about.

Why are they crapping their pants? Halo, Gears of War, Uncharted, MGS, God of War, etc.... will never on the supposed Valve box. There's more than enough console exclusives to support the genre. They're completely different markets anyway.
If the Console is crapping over the PC, is the PC crapping over the Tablet? There's enough user to support the three markets.

As I said... rumor has it.
You have to remember, we already have 3 disc Xbox games... and it won't be 6 discs... It would be like 4-5 Xbox discs... But depending on the disc security, you don't get a full 9GB of DVD dual layer nor do you get the full size of a PS3 disc... The disc security takes up quite a bit of space.

Not necessarily... No... compression methods are different between the 2 platforms, so that changes things.
It may be 4 Xbox discs and maybe just require a 2nd bluray disc for a very small amount of data.
Again, it's a rumor, because they may be able to squeeze some extra compression here and there and make it a non-issue.

Also, I have heard that Microsoft and Sony may have recently freed up some of the space in their security layer, allowing for more game data to fit.
So it could be a non issue.

I haven't played 2 but I liked the single player campaign in the first Black Ops. To me it was a throwback to the originality of the first Modern Warfare game.

The 4 player split screen was my favorite.
We would go into our theater and hook up our 360 and play 4 player split Nuke Town on the big HD theater projector... Talk about crazy fun.

As long as the new Bioshock is more like the first one. Bioshock 2 blew dick.

The XBOX 360's final year!
The games expected to end things with a bang!

I enjoyed bioshock 2 but the original was far superior.

6 can do 3D if you develop for that... Dev kits had 8 Cores and16GB of memory.
Tu, will the next gen consoles have similar processing power to a current I7 Intel Processor and GeForce GTX 680 GPU / AMD HD 7970 or so. Will they play 1080P at 60 FPS with AA and all the new effects. I am concerned that a high PC right now would probably slaughter the not yet shown next gen ;)

Archer/Shizzo
The original was directed by Ken Levine, who was not involved in the sequel at all, as it was made by a bunch of his old staff. As you can see, it had quite an impact.
Bioshock Infinite is his baby, is a whole new game, and will be like nothing you've seen.
Youtube has a trailer. Looks insane.

All I know is I'm sure Sony and MS are crapping the bed about Valve's plans with PC gaming. If you don't think they aren't SERIOUSLY concerned then you don't know what you are talking about.
hahahahahahahahahahah
on a side note, i used to laugh at people like syntax, since consoles have always had MANY great games you couldn't get on PC. These days though this seems to be changing. Over the course of the PS3/360/WII generation, developers have increasingly brought what would have previously been "console only" games to PC on day one. At this point, lots of people have computers that are at least as powerful as a PS3/360, and anyone who has a "gaming PC" has a machine that is far more powerful. So as far as this generation is concerned, there's increasingly little reason to need a console in addition to your PC. You can even just plug in your controller (whether PS3 or 360) and huge monitors (resembling the TVs of yesteryear) are cheap these days.
Of course this will change again in the coming year or two, when the next generation arrives. People will whine about shelling out 400-600 dollars for a new console, but the machine you get will be far more capable than whatever PC you could build for a similar price, and everything will be as it was. However, this window where the console has a power advantage will be shorter than ever before, and the PC releases will start coming sooner rather than later. Even the biggest "console seller" titles will probably make their way to PC. And by next-next generation... who knows, the console advantage may be gone entirely. PC "ports" could become available almost universally by day 1. At this point I might actually lose interest in consoles.
Who knows, really... maybe in the next 10 years or so you'll just buy an "Xbox live" subscription, and all the game-processing will be run "on the cloud", with the video output being streamed back to your TV. No need to even buy a computer or console.

I think you make some good points, except I disagree about not need a console for this generation and the biggest exlusives - Halo / Gears of War / Uncharted / God of War / MGS will not lauch on PC.

The current High End PC and the Next Gen Consoles will be very comparable... PCs will always evolve at a faster clip than consoles though, so your console that lasts 5 years, towards the middle of the cycle will always be underpowered compared to a nice high end pc of the day.
Unfortunately, that's how it goes.

These are the rumored specs of the next Xbox 720
Xbox 720 Tech Specs
Three SOCs in one console. Two "Venus" models, and one "Mars".
8GB RAM, with 1GB devoted to operating system.
Mars SOC - System SOC
GPU AMD 8850 spec GPU clocked at 600mhz
4 core CPU is clocked @ 1.8GHz. It is an x86 system.
Audio DSP
2 of Venus SOC - Application SOC
GPU AMD 8900 spec GPU clocked at 800mhz with 10000HD series future tech
4 core CPU is clocked @ 2.5GHz
1.5 Gb of GDDR5 ram on each SOC (total 3GB) clocked @ 1.2Ghz
Xbox 720's "Oban" is a game changer for Microsoft
The name Oban was revealed a couple of months back, and was believed to be the name of the chips onboard the Xbox 720.
According to this insider, however, Oban is actually the name of the blitter inside the next-gen machine.
A blitter is a system built into hardware designed to improve the speed at which data is transferred within the hardware's memory. It is a separate system from the CPU and can run parallel to it, moving large amounts of data relatively quickly.
The Xbox 720 will be a 356-bit system - compared to the PS4's 256-bit system - and is capable of 550GB of data per second.
The insider claims it is designed for raytracing, and with the Oban and the higher bus speed of the GPU this will put it on top in terms of technical prowess.
Xbox 720 is designed for ray tracing technology
Ray tracing is a high-end lighting technology that isn't widely used in games today. Unlike the current dynamic lighting system - which recreates the effects of lighting - ray tracing emulates the science of light.
In other words, more realistic reflections and refractions can be created to create more realistic looking lighting.
The problem is it's a very intensive technology that takes a very long time to render and is primarily used in Pixar films. If the Xbox 720 is as powerful as this suggests, then ray tracing will be more possible with the hardware.
The insider claims that Microsoft has designed the Xbox 720 with ray tracing in mind, however admits that "the hardest part will be for studios to work with ray traced graphics enabled engines."

I don't think they'll call it the 720 either.

well, i think halo and gow are done for this generation. or is there another gears game planned? i don't keep track of games nearly as much as i used to... but yeah, there are a few big games left. that's why i said "increasingly little" reason, not "no reason". the only remaining game that i presently know of and consider a "must-buy" for this gen is the new MGS game (and maybe the Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance).
I want to play the new DmC game that just came out... what do you know, it's being released on PC a week after consoles, and even my modest laptop can run it fine! :o
btw, I just looked it up... even some of the gears games are out on PC. the series that practically defined console gaming this generation (along with MW)...
hell, even dark souls got a PC release probably in large part due to fan petitions. this kind of thing was unthinkable even five years ago. in 2009 people were thinking demon's souls would never make it to north america... and in 2012, we have a medium-sized japanese developer bringing the sequel to their "cult hit" to PC because people made a bunch of noise. times are definitely changing!

thanks bro i'm happy to say the machines of the future have gobbled up all the heme-iron as a crucial operating resource, leaving the humans meatless

There are at least two more Halo games definitely confirmed.
I'm very excited for the Xbox 720 (or whatever they plan to call it), I think I may give my old Xbox 360 to my brother when the new one comes out.
A year and a half ago I scoured the earth for a brand new Nintendo Game cube (which wasn't cheap) for my brother, he is mentally handicapped but he loves gaming and I wanted to get him something simple, he loves it, but turns out he can kick my ass in just about any game you throw at him and loves getting on my Xbox whenever he comes to visit, so I think he's earned it loll

Can't wait for Deadspace 3 (feb.) and The new Gears of War (mar.)

Lol its funny, I had a game saved, (GoldenEye Reloaded) then my brother comes over and shits on all my stats, progressing me even further in the game, I was like, how the fuck did he do that! My dad got him a PSP and he absolutely loved it, hopefully he'll be equally as happy when he gets my 360!

I like the PS3 as far as visuals myself... but I agree, Xbox Live is the absolute BEST online service currently... If you like online multiplayer, you like Xbox live... Xbox live is my one reason to have an Xbox... Much like you, I have them both... I also have a Wii and a high end gaming PC.
I actually love my single player stuff on PC if it's available... if it's not, I go PS3... if it's something I will play online, I get it for the Xbox.

Does either one of them selling more than the other make you any money?
It doesn't to me, and I'm in the biz.
We just sell more copies of one thing over another... cost is the same.

Tu,
It is obvious that the PS3 and XBox 360 are very simiilar in capabilities. Games optimized for both look very similar. Some look better on the PS3 and some on the XB360. The Wii from the beginning was a novelty that sold beyond Nintendo's expectations. What do you think of the WiiU. If you had to go out on a limb, which of the next gen consoles will have the superior firepower or graphics ability? Personally, I will get each for the exclusives, but inquiring minds want to know ;D.

Honestly, I always say that the one that comes out LAST has the most power (Unless it's Nintendo)... The Wii U is better than the current PS or Xbox, but not by some crazy leaps and bounds.
I will own all of them as well.
Nintendo always does interesting fun things with their controllers and it usually works.
I expect the PS4 or whatever it is to be called will be the most powerful, but remember, power doesn't always equate to the best games... not even the best looking.
Some people are just better at making their hardware do amazing things.
-

Unfortunately, that's how it goes.
They should just make modular upgrades during the life cycle of a console to add more ram, cpu power, graphics power. Then again, it would just be a full blown PC at that point.

Exactly, and at that point, you're talking about much more expensive machines. It's not feasible for a person to go around buying parts to upgrade their consoles all of the time... Part of the thing about consoles is that we know when we make something for it, it works.
It's tougher to do PCs because everyones parts are not the same... We try to make a minimum spec, but then we have "recommended spec" and they all have to be tested... we test some of the more random things ever.

Shipped and sold are not synonymous. Shipped does not equal sold.
But like Tu said, it's irrelevant.
Sony took a bath on the PS3.

That's pretty much what Valve is trying to Do with their new steam box console.

-
Why are they crapping their pants? Halo, Gears of War, Uncharted, MGS, God of War, etc.... will never on the supposed Valve box. There's more than enough console exclusives to support the genre. They're completely different markets anyway.
If the Console is crapping over the PC, is the PC crapping over the Tablet? There's enough user to support the three markets.
That is short-term thinking. The goal with Valve is obviously long-term. They are actively striving to make PCs as accessible and easy to use as a console. Once they achieve this, you have just given every bro who loves his Call of Madden 20XX easy access to literally decades of titles which will work on their "console" forever. No longer do you have to worry about your gaming collection becoming null and void on the new system just because "insert company here" is doing a cash grab by not making their next piece of hardware backwards compatible. Not to mention if developers notice a rise in PC sales more will have no hesitation at all to not only do solid ports, but exclusively develop for PC again with the MS/Sony/Nintendo as the systems to port to, whereas right now it is the other way around.
If Valve do this thing right then MS/Sony are going to have to definitely change their way of thinking. Definitely Sony. Sony has been dropping the ball left and right making stupid decisions about great hardware. I have watched Valve since they were still working on HL1, I fully expect them to do this thing right. They already have their own online "store" and are considered by most gamers to be PC Gaming already.
One thing I don't think people are considering when it comes to "BUT CONSOLE EXCLUSIVES" is the fact that yes, these will sell systems. No doubt. But...With PC gaming, and Steam, your purchase is with you, no matter what piece of hardware you are on. Even 10 years from now. Your gaming collection becomes a more usable collection, as opposed to something you put in storage when the new consoles come out and have to go digging around if you get a hankering to play that game from 2002 again. Also, I guarantee they will be actively making sure titles are up to date and compatible with people's current hardware and OSes, like GOG does.
And yes, everyone in gaming right now is noticing tablets/mobile. Especially Valve. They aren't stupid, they are going where there is potential for cash. Tablets and smart phones aren't replacing big screen gaming experiences for a good while. Not until the hardware/software in the things can support everything and being able to interface with all your devices, and play on your delicious 4K TV (or higher!) is the standard.
Sony took a bath on the Vita.
Fixed! Great hardware....ridiculously stupid decisions. Many facepalms to be had.

so, every "bro" gamer cares about backwards compatibility now? ???
or, what is your point?
i don't think BC is hugely important to a lot of people. i'm the classic example of a person for whom this SHOULD be a sales point... i've spent tons of time going back buying and playing old games for as long as i can remember. but i think people like me are the extreme minority, and besides, BC has almost no sway on my purchasing decision when it comes to new consoles anyway.
admittedly, i haven't kept up on the "steam box" at all, but i can't imagine, if it does do anything interesting, that MS and Sony won't be able to just copy it.

I too like the idea of BC, I dont like the idea of nit being able to play old games when the new xbox comes out and am far too lazy to dig an old console out and rig it up to play older games.
It would be great if the new xbox could play the 360 games.
