the Constitution's Second Amendment was created to bolster slavery and capture land from Native Americans, award winning actor Danny Glover told a group of students at a Texas A&M sponsored event on Thursday.
Actor Danny Glover told students at Texas A&M University the intent of the Second Amendment was to protect slavery.
“I don’t know if you know the genesis of the right to bear arms,” he said. “The Second Amendment comes from the right to protect themselves from slave revolts, and from uprisings by Native Americans.”
“A revolt from people who were stolen from their land or revolt from people whose land was stolen from, that’s what the genesis of the second amendment is,” he continued.
-
Does Mr. Glover have any documentation, evidence or any other sources to bolster his assertions?
-
This is from THE HIDDEN HISTORY OF THE SECOND AMENDMENT- University of California at Davis Law Review
"Slavery was not only an economic and industrial system," one scholar noted, "but more than that, it was a gigantic police system." Over time the South had developed an elaborate system of slave control. The basic instrument of control was the slave patrol, armed groups of white men who made regular rounds. The patrols made sure that blacks were not wandering where they did not belong, gathering in groups, or engaging in other suspicious activity. Equally important, however, was the demonstration of constant vigilance and armed force. The basic strategy was to ensure and impress upon the slaves that whites were armed, watchful, and ready to respond to insurrectionist activity at all times. The state required white men and female plantation owners to participate in the patrols and to provide their own arms and equipment, although the rich were permitted to send white servants in their place.
Virginia, South Carolina, and Georgia all had regulated slave patrols. By the mid-eighteenth century, the patrols had become the responsibility of the militia. Georgia statutes enacted in 1755 and 1757, for example, carefully divided militia districts into discrete patrol areas and specified when patrols would muster. The Georgia statutes required patrols, under the direction of commissioned militia officers, to examine every plantation each month and authorized them to search "all Negro Houses for offensive Weapons and Ammunition" and to apprehend and give twenty lashes to any slave found outside plantation grounds.
In the South, therefore, the patrols and the militia were largely synonymous. The Stono Rebellion had been quickly suppressed because the white men worshiping at the Wiltown Presbyterian church on that Sunday morning had, as required by law, gone to church armed. Some of the accounts of Stono refer to the body of white men who attacked the black insurrectionists as the "militia" while others refer to them as "planters." This is a distinction without a difference; the two groups were one and the same. Virtually all able-bodied white men were part of the militia, which primarily meant that they had slave control duties under the direction and discipline of the local militia officers.
The militia was the first and last protection from the omnipresent threat of slave insurrection or vengeance. The War for Independence had placed the South in a precarious position: sending the militia to the war against the British would leave Southern communities vulnerable to slave insurrection. The Southern states, therefore, often refused to commit their militia to the Revolution, reserving them instead for slave control. Nor could the South help by sending much in the way of arms, for rifles were in short supply and necessary to defend against possible slave insurrection.
After the war, the militia remained the principal means of protecting the social order and preserving white control over an enormous black population. Anything that might weaken this system presented the gravest of threats. The South's fear that the North might destabilize the slave system ¾ weakening white control over the slave population ¾ gave anti-Federalists a powerful weapon.

haha, i thought he was a well integrated african american, now as he ages he goes back to his ethnic roots and his deep inner racism comes to the surface....made quite a fair share of money off the white american public for decades tho...when politically correct multiculturalism was in all movies from the color purple to action flicks.
Since blacks have been freed, they ve bee using weapons to kill each others and rob white people.

I agree that having armed citizens kept the slaves from rebelling, but I disagree that this is the SOLE reason for the 2nd Amendment. Having an armed populace (Minutemen) against British soldiers during the Revolutionary War also played a part.
-
This is a sure sign the 2nd Amendment is here to stay. They always pull out that race card as a last resort.

The Second Amendment was not enacted to provide a check on government tyranny; rather, it was written to assure the Southern states that Congress would not undermine the slave system by using its newly acquired constitutional authority over the militia to disarm the state militia and thereby destroy the South's principal instrument of slave control. In effect, the Second Amendment supplemented the slavery compromise made at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia and obliquely codified in other constitutional provisions.

E-Kul - I'm sure you can find obscure college papers to support your assertion all day long. Obscure college papers presenting an opinion are not fact. Again, obscure college papers, presenting a single opinion, are not fact. I can do the same thing. Examples below.
Why was it written?
We migrated to the United States to escape oppressive totalitarian government.
The concept behind the United States is that the centralized federal government has limited power over the people (as opposed to the dictatorships from which we came)
The Second Amendment states that in order to maintain a free state, the people must retain the right to keep and bear arms. The presence of armed citizens is what keeps the government "honest". No government would be foolish enough to impose a dictatorship on people who have the ability to resist.
The Second Amendment does not grant us this right. This right already existed. The Second Amendment merely prevents the government from infringing on it.

The right to have arms in English history is believed to have been regarded as a long-established natural right in English law, auxiliary to the natural and legally defensible rights to life.[10] The English Bill of Rights 1689 emerged from a tempestuous period in English politics during which two issues were major sources of conflict: the authority of the King to govern without the consent of Parliament and the role of Catholics in a country that was becoming ever more Protestant. Ultimately, the Catholic James II was overthrown in the Glorious Revolution, and his successors, the Protestants William III and Mary II, accepted the conditions that were codified in the Bill. One of the issues the Bill resolved was the authority of the King to disarm its subjects, after James II had attempted to disarm many Protestants, and had argued with Parliament over his desire to maintain a standing (or permanent) army.[11] The bill states that it is acting to restore "ancient rights" trampled upon by James II, though some have argued that the English Bill of Rights created a new right to have arms, which developed out of a duty to have arms.[12] In District of Columbia v. Heller (2008), the Supreme Court did not accept this view, remarking that the English right at the time of the passing of the English Bill of Rights was "clearly an individual right, having nothing whatsoever to do with service in the militia" and that it was a right not to be disarmed by the Crown and was not the granting of a new right to have arms.[13]

^^^ That doesn't mean anything nor are they college papers. I posted a link to the University of California at Davis Law Review, it is a well researched paper, and one that you could certainly learn from, although it will conflict with your BIASES,

I agree that having armed citizens kept the slaves from rebelling, but I disagree that this is the SOLE reason for the 2nd Amendment. Having an armed populace (Minutemen) against British soldiers during the Revolutionary War also played a part.
Early in the war some revolutionaries argued that the militia, which had proven its competence at Lexington and Bunker Hill, could sustain a large part of the resistance to the British. By late 1776 little attachment to this idea remained . . . . Almost all revolutionaries agreed that a standing army, no matter how suspect and unwelcome, was necessary. Every state supported the idea that a Continental Army should bear the main fighting; every state tried to recruit and supply it; every state preferred to be defended by it.

Why is anyone paying attention to Danny Glover of all people.... ::)
-
Why would a repeal of the second amendment be any better at preventing gun crime than it was at protecting slavery?
-
You're pretty transparent E-Kul.
What you're doing is saying that the 2nd Amendment was created SOLEY to protect slavery.
Any other reason, is simply "meaningless". Right?
And, since there is no more slavery, there is no more reason for the 2nd Amendment.
That's your logic and nothing will ever convince you otherwise. Good luck with this train of thought. 8)

I love it when people look back in our history for inspiration and find what a cluster-fuck of repression and death this place has been since it was invaded (not settled) by the Puritans. Love it! Indians, blacks, Mexicans, et cetera we've killed them all.
I also love it when people quote the Founding Fathers as if the FFs (first fuckheads) were not slave-owners who believed that only rich people have a right to vote.
How and why people keep looking back to these individuals for guidance is testament of how well the American media shapes thought in this country.
I love to read counter historical books and my shit the fan when I read Sundown Towns by Jim Loewen. Just when I though I'd read it all about our propensity to hate and destroy other human beings and their possessions, here comes a book that says that The Reconstruction period was nothing but a white phenomena and that the freed black's lives, although initially improved, when from bad to worse.
And this is the real stuff that comes to the surface when you dig deep enough. It certainly made me understand why some black people hate white people. It's a reaction to our action. The Jews have a right to hate Nazis. The black South Africans have a right to hate white South Africans.
Coming back to the US and Sundown Towns... Between 1890 and 1950 whites in the US went on a rampage the likes you can only find in South Africa at the turn of the XIX century. And the synthesis was always the same in every town, in thousands of towns: black guy rapes white girl. White mob gathers in main square and forces all, or most, blacks out of town at gunpoint and warn them to not return. Slowly but surely all blacks are forced out of their homes, their possessions stolen along with their dignity.
It was full-fledged Apartheid, and such a system needs to be defended, not maintained, hence the NRA and the gun problem we have today.

Complete abolishment of firearms throughout the populace would do absolutely nothing to reduce crime rates or instances of mass murder. Crime rates and mental illness exist entirely outside the realm of the gun control debate.
Further gun control measures are nothing more but yet another rule or regulation imposed upon citizens.

It was created in a completely different time, regardless of the reasons, Times change, and so should people. LAWS should be enacted based on NEED, and not remain stagnant and become redundant. This has been the FUNDAMENTAL issue with religion. They have been FORCED to CHANGE or else they would have become extinct long ago. Personally, I think the average American is unlikely to change, they are too STUCK in their ways, and lack the necessary ability to reflect and develop the required self awareness that leads to lasting change. I think regardless of the LAWS Americans will be killing each other at an alarming rate for a long time too come.
-
who gives a fuck anyways, there s no slavery anymore and the potus is black...old angry racist black man is boring. They want it all without being able to do what is required to create, obtain it. I can see why our white ancestors kept them in check with weapons.

No you didnt kill them all, as they re stil alive and well, and learnt how to imitate you until one day they ll replace you. Isnt life ironical.

TBH it doesn't matter if Glover is right or not, the fact is the US constitution was drafted by a bunch of slave owners, so why in the US this ancient text created by murderers and rapists is deemed so sacred, does seem quite strange.

What Nonsense! For starters it is well documented that the harder GUNS are for the general populace to access, the harder it is too commit crimes, and especially mass murders. Considering that a lot of these mass shootings are not committed by Criminals, they are 100% linked to the gun control debate. Mental Illness is the one thing that should not be linked to gun control, mental illness is just another way for society to say we find you objectionable, a lot of these mass shooters are just really pissed off, and studies show that those with so called mental illness are less likely to be violent and more likely to be the victim of violence. It's the so called NORMAL people you have to watch out for.
And so what if their is another LAW or RULE, they are necessary to develop a civilised community, are you suggesting you would prefer more chaos and less order.

Hey Conker, what conutry's constitution do you approve of? What country's constitution should we use as an example? Can you share with us what country's constitution was written by pure men, without sin or vice, in a manner acceptable to your gentle sensibilities? Thanks.

Of course it does, but their rates don't even come close to the astronomical amount of homicides that occur in America. The United States is the only industrialized nation in the world in which tens of thousands of citizens are killed or wounded by guns each year.

TBH in most developed countries laws and regulations evolve and are updated to fit current societal requirements, yet in the US there seems to be this strange belief(amongst some) that if a single word of the constitution is altered to perhaps fit current needs, the entire nation will collapse or come to a grinding a halt.

Are they deliberately killed by Cars! Also, because of concerted efforts by activists the fatalities from Car Accidents has dropped dramatically, the AUTO industry fought tooth and nail to prevent safety features being added to their CARS as they were worried about the profit margin (same as the NRA and other groups who profit from GUNS). If we are playing the altruist and concerned about other deaths, why not fatalities at war, poverty, starvation etc, yeah other people DIE, and yeah, their are steps taken to PREVENT these incidents, just because other people DIE, doesn't make the tens of thousands of people killed by a gun each year irrelevant or something to be IGNORED!

They aren't ignored.
Here is a fact you're simply going to have to deal with: As long as guns exist, people will get killed by them.

False. Tens of thousands were not killed by firearms. In 2011, there were under 9000 gun- related deaths. Your inherent biases and obvious emotional response to anything gun-related makes you unable to look at any statistic that would disprove your assertions about firearms in the US.
You, sir, are wrong on nearly every facet of the debate. The numbers, facts, and historical significance of the US are lost on you. Don't worry though, at least you can be clumped in with the other tens of millions of idiots who share the same view as you.

Your wrong again, but because you are a simpleton Gun Nutter, I forgive you, it is to be expected. Assault (homicide) by discharge of firearms was 11,101 for 2011 and I said killed or wounded, and to be entirely accurate, the total number of deaths resulting from firearms in 2011 was 32,163. and In 2008, there were 78,622 nonfatal firearm injuries in the United States. you can be clumped in with the other tens of millions of idiots who can't read and make up any old lie and call it a fact.
So if we go back to my original statement that The United States is the only industrialized nation in the world in which tens of thousands of citizens are killed or wounded by guns each year. just based on the 2011 and 2008 figures I quoted their is well over one hundred thousand people each year killed or injured by guns.

Cigarette smoking causes about 1 of every 5 deaths in the United States each year.1,6 Cigarette smoking is estimated to cause the following:1
• 443,000 deaths annually (including deaths from secondhand smoke)
• 49,400 deaths per year from secondhand smoke exposure
People deliberately smoke. Where's your thread on that?
-
This is an interpretation believed by a very small minority of historians.

Can they murder 20 people in a minute with a cigarette? I am sure if someone could enter a room and MURDER 20 people in a minute, you bet your ass I would be making a thread about that.

Murdering 20 people in a minute is wrong.
But murdering 40K people over the course of many years is A-OK?
What is the time limit for you E-Kul? How slow does death have to occur in your eyes for it to be OK in your book?

It's not murder you idiot, smoking is a bad habit that over decades degrades the individuals health that can result in premature death, it isn't even suicide, it's a poor lifestyle choice that leads to an addiction that may cause premature death.
And as to how slow death has to occur for it to be OK, anywhere between 60 and 80 years of age seems OK to me.
Smoking rates were 60% for centenarian men, and just because the majority of men who lived to be over a hundred were at some point smokers in their life, doesn't mean that cigarettes are safe and shouldn't be regulated.
-
So what would you call deaths from second hand smoke? Would these be classfied by you as equal to the deaths from accidental discharge of firearms?
-

Once again, you bring up a good point, since the dangers of second hand smoke has been recognised, their has been increased regulations and legislation for smoke-free laws in workplaces and indoor public places, including restaurants, bars and night clubs, as well as some open public spaces. Their were also those that bitterly complained about these changes (Just like the NRA crazies), who believed they had the right to poison others with their bad habit and that their shouldn't be any regulations, but the many people whose lives will be spared and will enjoy greater health are grateful.

Yes, these regulations are similar to gun regulations, are they not? (Gun Free zones, background checks..)
Cigarettes are not banned, and you are not calling for them to be banned.
Cigarettes are directly responsible for many, many more deaths than firearms. (Timespan notwithstanding.)
Why call for the ban of one, but not the other?

I'm all for cigarettes being banned, and essentially, at least where I come from, their is a big push for cigarettes to eventually be banned. In Tasmania, they recently proposed anyone born after the year 2000 would be banned from buying cigarettes when they turn 18. I don't think it got through, but they are aiming at a smoke free generation. Also the rest of the country continues to regulate even stricter controls every year. Just a few weeks ago they extended public smoking bans to playgrounds, bus stops, sports grounds, swimming pools and the entrances to all public buildings.

The point is that it's legal, causes death, and causes the deaths of people who don't smoke (second hand).
If we are all for banning things that take life (like guns)...why is cigarettes a "ridiculous" analogy? And why stop there? Sugar is also very bad.

A submissive bottom twink that lets "they" run his life. Still stomping his feet and holding his breath in his third world cesspool - while we buy more guns and ammo and drive gas guzzling SUVs while telling the rest of the world FU!
And who gives a shit what racist liberal Danny Glover thinks? If the U.S. and our way of government is so bad, I will personally pay for Glover's boat ticket back to Africa.

because those are self inflicted deaths, and preventable. and in the last 15 years things have changed drastically on both fronts. warning labels, nutrition labels, calories being displayed on menus, designated smoking areas are the norm in any public place you go to, or there is no smoking at all. measures have been taken, but it is a free society and people will do things that are bad for their health.
But last time i checked eating candy doesn't kill a school full of children dead in a massacre. As a matter of fact i know in my kid's school they removed the vending machines that sold crap years ago.
you can argue till your blue in the face, it's apples and oranges. and who said anything about banning all firearms ? So far, the only action taken was NY drawing up a bill that limits magazine capacity, which is symbolic at best. I don't see anyone trying to ban gun ownership wholesale.."assault rifles" is the buzzword and the idiot politicians are all trying to further their careers with them.
What will happen is the gun industry will find loopholes (that the politicians are well aware of but do nothing about) . Selling aftermarket stocks and pistol grips that people put on themselves is the obvious one.
and it will be business as usual, but the idiot masses are satisfied because something was "done" about it

Oh, that's right your some extremist radical riding horseback from town to town kicking arse and taking names. No one tells you what to do, your a REAL MAN, an OUTLAW, rejecting societies conventions and LAWS because no one is going to tell the Chopper Rider how to live. Well, good on you dickhead, I'm sorry your father was a piece of shit and your mother a crackwhore, but I can more than easily live a happy fulfilling life within the boundaries set out by society and never owning a gun (regardless of the legality).

Slavery would have fizzled out anyway in the Confederate States.
It was not sustainable in the long-term, mainly because the focus on their economy was on agriculture as opposed to the North which was industrial.
The Civil War was just an excuse to stop the Confederate States from breaking away from the Union.

Here, I will type this slowly so that you can keep up.
What you do, or believe, has absolutely NO bearing on what I do, or believe. I will buy all the fucking guns, ammo, gas guzzling SUVs, food, booze, and wasteful shit I choose.....it's the American way. And some liberal homosexual autistic retard in Australia won't stop me.
But I'm still willing to have you stop by and try.

Well, I did stop by your Mum's house, was that you who knocked?, I was busy pounding the shit out of your Mum, and she was making such a racket, we thought we heard someone knock, but by the time I finally got your Mum to stop her loud moaning, the door knocking had stopped. Oh well, maybe next time.
Wow, that's original. Spend much time thinking that up? Are "Mum" jokes still in style, or considered funny, in Australia? Oh my, I'm SO owned, what ever will I do?
