Looks like a variation on Kaiser (sp?) equipment. Using air pressure instead of weights.

Using air-pressure to simulate the effect of weights....instead of using weights?
Why hasn't anyone thought of using some sort of high-density gas with extreme air-resistance to simulate the effects of air-pressure's simulation of weight? That's when the gains start!

Yep, that was my first thought, Kaiser Pneumatic System. I haven't seen it around much, but it still seems to sell to rehab and older folks gyms.

There's a reason why. Gyms fill there floors with up shiny new machines that know one knows how to use and calls it "state of the art".

Ok, I can see what he's going for. A needle valve (bottom, right of center?) to vary hydraulic flow and govern resistance instead of loading plates.
You can see Clever Dick holding onto the pressure pipes beneath the 45 elbow. The tank is a just a reservoir.
Looks like he might have used a second chrome steel pipe in addition to the main linear bearing supporting rod and installed a sliding seal inside it to feed the tank. I'd be more inclined to use a fixed seal around a pneumatic strut and let the strut rod plunger the fluid, or a hydraulic cylinder (full size or mini & cammed).
Probably a marketable item to pink gyms where plates are yucky. Chrome rod and a sliding seal aren't cost effective tho and are going to mean maintenance or wet/oily leaks.

I have used that machine. The round things are shoulder pads since the entire angled pad lifts off so you can do leg presses laying flat if you wish to.
FLEX leg press is better IMHO.

Those are definitely pressure pipes he's hanging onto. Surely. They're not substantial enough to be structural and there looks to be an elbow above his fingers. Gotta carry air or fluid.
Could you adjust resistance by turning a knob?

He is holding onto some hand rails welded onto the machine they are not structural.
Machine is an angled leg press on linear bearings nothing more.

Good thing I don't build machinery for a living. Might have to rethink a few of my brilliant invention ideas.

I've always wanted to go to college and learn how to design and construct those long manufacturing lines that create automobiles or insert food in cans with no need of human intervention ..... but I didn't know what to call that course of study.
But I still watch "How Things are Made" once in a while on TV.

Robotics is cool stuff from what I've seen. I haven't really studied it but it's amazing what can get done with pneumatics & hydraulics for grunt, electric for actuation, and computer control. I've been boning up more on fluid management, valving, pumps, and hydraulics, so guess I'm guilty of 'projection' when it comes to the leg press.
Just the machining processes and all the nifty ways people have figured out to shape durable materials like different steels really interests me. Wish I had more time to get informed but a true machinist is someone with a lifetime in his trade. Those guys get all my respect...especially when I want something expensive cut after scratching my head for a week and they just show me a better way right there on the spot.

actually used these kaiser air machines in the mid 80's at fitness america gym. first time i used the preacher bench kaiser machine worked great, next time i thiought it sucked stopped useing immeadiately

Anyone who can't figure out what the bit circled in red does is a certified knucklehead! My leg presses can be used in two ways. First as shown in the photo by Ryan Laos, Mr Australia, Mr World. The back rest can be removed so that the user lies with those round pads against his shoulders. That is how I designed the machine to be used. These are still the best leg presses ever made. Built in 1987 and still as good as new. They have shock absorbers to dampen the load when lowered. Sleds run on Thompson Linear Bearings.

What a tool. The gym was called Vince's Gym from about 1972. I changed it to Vince & Roz's Fitness World in 1987. Recently it has been shortened to Vince & Roz's Gym.

Arnold was pretty smart, but Arnold was like a child and when it came to the day of the contest, you were his father Vince, his fucking father, so he should have been coming to YOU for advices, so it shouldn't have been that hard for you to give him the wrong advices, now was it Vince?

He had others write books in his name and gave out advices. According to Mike Mentzer, Arnold didn't know much about hypertrophy theory. He didn't have to. He applied ideas and built huge muscles. That was sufficient. He was also willing to take whatever he had to in those days to augment his size. It wasn't what the current pros are doing but it was more than I was willing to experiment with.

That look like Vince's steampunk edition of the leg press. You can say anything you like, but I love the way how he can over complicate simpliest thing and make these machines look like some torture equipment of the evil genius. There should be gallery about these things in their gym web page, because they, with their modifications by Vince, are just insane. I am not kidding at all, because that level of engineering proves some serious talent. Why this talent is wasted to this is beyond my imagination, but the talent is still obvious. I was able to find some drawings about the his earlier prototypes, and even they are brilliant:

Arnold shared all of his secrets in his books and he gave out plenty of seminars. But it seems as though you're pretty bitter over Arnold's success compared to yours which is very little. You never took the chances that others like he, Franco, Zane, Dickerson, etc did. Honestly, you had a great opportunity to get into the "Inner Circle of Arnold", you could have been rich, famous, a champion bodybuilder and the world as as your oyster....
But instead your ego has led you to spend your remaining days building useless equipment that could be used to build space shuttles, posting on Getbig, complaining about the IFBB, and begging Ron for some blue stars. Arnold obviously found out about how you were trashing him and that's why you ended up dead last in the Mr Australia.
I feel so sorry for you Vince Basile but you made you bed in life. You had the opportunity and you simply never took it
