Following is the letter of resignation sent last week by former President George Bush to the National Rifle Association: May 3, 1995
It would be f'ng AMAZING to see a Republican doing this today
http://www.nytimes.com/1995/05/11/us/letter-of-resignation-sent-by-bush-to-rifle-association.html
Dear Mr. Washington,
I was outraged when, even in the wake of the Oklahoma City tragedy, Mr. Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of N.R.A., defended his attack on federal agents as "jack-booted thugs." To attack Secret Service agents or A.T.F. people or any government law enforcement people as "wearing Nazi bucket helmets and black storm trooper uniforms" wanting to "attack law abiding citizens" is a vicious slander on good people.
Al Whicher, who served on my [ United States Secret Service ] detail when I was Vice President and President, was killed in Oklahoma City. He was no Nazi. He was a kind man, a loving parent, a man dedicated to serving his country -- and serve it well he did.
In 1993, I attended the wake for A.T.F. agent Steve Willis, another dedicated officer who did his duty. I can assure you that this honorable man, killed by weird cultists, was no Nazi.
John Magaw, who used to head the U.S.S.S. and now heads A.T.F., is one of the most principled, decent men I have ever known. He would be the last to condone the kind of illegal behavior your ugly letter charges. The same is true for the F.B.I.'s able Director Louis Freeh. I appointed Mr. Freeh to the Federal Bench. His integrity and honor are beyond question.
Both John Magaw and Judge Freeh were in office when I was President. They both now serve in the current administration. They both have badges. Neither of them would ever give the government's "go ahead to harass, intimidate, even murder law abiding citizens." (Your words)
I am a gun owner and an avid hunter. Over the years I have agreed with most of N.R.A.'s objectives, particularly your educational and training efforts, and your fundamental stance in favor of owning guns.
However, your broadside against Federal agents deeply offends my own sense of decency and honor; and it offends my concept of service to country. It indirectly slanders a wide array of government law enforcement officials, who are out there, day and night, laying their lives on the line for all of us.
You have not repudiated Mr. LaPierre's unwarranted attack. Therefore, I resign as a Life Member of N.R.A., said resignation to be effective upon your receipt of this letter. Please remove my name from your membership list. Sincerely, [ signed ] George Bush

Record attendance at latest NRA conference, up 15k from last year. The NRA continues to poll more popularly than Obama.
In short, this thread = LOL!

what is likely happening is that more people are buying multiple guns and the NRA has long ago stopped being an association for hunting, gun safety, etc.. and has become a lightening rod for for wingnuts who think they need to guns for some future fight with the government
Recent poll showed that 44% of Republicans think in the next few years that "armed revolution might be necessary to protect our liberties): http://publicmind.fdu.edu/2013/guncontrol/

Doesn't take balls to be a quitter. Besides, I thought you hated quitters. That was one of your whole mantras against Palin (and rightly so).

did you see the reason he gave for resigning
It was the vile rhetoric by LaPierre in the aftermath of the OK City bombing
Nothing has changed today except no Republican has the balls to call him out on it
-

I see. So quitting is ok as long as you agree with the reasons.

I see. So quitting is ok as long as you agree with the reasons.
of course
where did you ever get the idea that all quitting (in this case it's merely resigning a membership in an organization that allows it's spokeperson to make vile comments) was a bad thing
It's not like, for example, Sarah Palin quitting halfway through her term as governor so that she could personally enrich herself rather than serving the public in the job she said she wanted
do you really need me to explain this shit to you?
-

That's not why she quit...that's what you decided to make up.
If you had any integrity you would see the sheer hypocrisy in your argument.

that's the reason that most people assume but then again whatever her reason really is it probably doesn't even matter to you
right
no one should ever quit anything for any reason...and let's put it in a time frame.... ever
is that the gospel according to Skippy?
-

No...that's your dumbass gospel.
First you make shit up about why she quit, then attacked her for being a quitter. Not to mention that you're the one always crying like a baby over misleading titles or 33 making shit up. ::)
Now Bush is a quitter, but you like that, so you don't make up any shit about him and his quitting is ok.
Makes total sense I guess in your world.
-
It would be f'ng AMAZING to see a Republican doing this today
It woudln't surprise me, actually.
Romney wrote one of the strictest anti-gun bills in american history for his state. And the NRA backed him, as did 50 million republicans.
Ron Paul is about as pro-gun as is humanly possible, and repubs discounted him because he didn't promise to bomb iran enough times.

not my gospel at all
Many Republicans and people in her own state felt that way (I'm sure you know this and are just playing dumb)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resignation_of_Sarah_Palin
still can't figure out why you think no one should ever quit anything
Bush's reasons for resigning are quite clear and any average 5th grader could read that letter and understand it (ignoring the fact that I spelled it out for you in deference to your pretense of ignorance)

Palin's reasons were quite clear...you've just decided to make shit up.
In this case, we have 2 people, each of whom quit because of something they didn't like.
They're both quitters.
But, since you like the reasons of one of the people, that 'took balls'...and the other is a useless tool.
Edit: Though Palin is a useless tool, haha.

I didn't make anything up
I'm just repeating what others have said and even given you sources
I've also explained (not that anyone who could read would need my help) why Bush resigned from the NRA and pointed out that La Piere continues to use such vile rhetoric yet no modern Republican has the balls to call him on it (other than Chris Christie but then Repubs don't like him much these days - not even sure if they still consider him a member of their club)

Yes, you made it up. Whether you're doing the speculating or someone else is doing the speculating, speculation is just that - making something up.
And, since it keeps going over your head, we'll try again:

how is it that I "made it up" when you I showed you example of other people (in her own party and constituents in her own state) saying the very same thing. I guess we all could have just made it up together
I still have no idea what your point is regarding "quitting"
The NRA spokeperson made vile (and let's not forget fucking absurd) comments about government agents and Bush took offense and publicly renounced his membership
Other than Chris Christie, there is no other Republican with the balls to make this kind of statement today even though LaPierre has continued with his insane rhetoric to this very day

Repubs use her for ratings. Well, they did before FOX viewers got sick of her.
Dems use her to sap the spotlight from really good Republicans. Every time Rand or Cruz should be on highlight reel speaking, woah, there's palin with her wig and shrill voice, delivering one-liners she read on free republican with just terrible comedic timing.
She is the reason people still think repubs are batshit crazy/stupid. Repubs should unite and ask all idiots among them to STFU. 1% of fools making 99% of party look bad.

Republicans like Reagan and HW had balls back in the day and they weren't afraid to piss off their constituents if they didn't agree with their actions. George did the right thing and it may have cost him the election but he stuck to his guns to put it mildly.

she's far from the only reason why Repubs appear to be batshit crazy
keep in mind that a recent poll claims that 44% of their party think they are going to have to have armed conflict with the government in the next few years and 49% of GOP voters nationally say they think that ACORN stole the election for President Obama in 2012
there is no shortage of "fucking stupid" in that party and it's not fair to blame it all on Palin nor to forget that she has a huge receptive audience for her insane comments.

Bush wasn't POTUS when he publicly repudiated and resigned from the NRA
-
Something else to keep in mind about the NRA
They are a fringe MINORITY group in this country
They just have a lot of money and political power and their main concern in selling guns.......period
They exist to promote gun sales
-
Bush wasn't POTUS when he publicly repudiated and resigned from the NRA
Whoops.... ;D I was thinking for some odd reason 92-96. Oh well,
-
I still have no idea what your point is regarding "quitting"
Yeah, I know.

Wow, StrawAnus got destroyed by Skip!

No she's not. She made certain mistakes that political candidates just can't make. And, she's clearly not the brightest bulb.
But Repubs have a lot of issues, chief among them, IMO, is their complete inability to adapt to the social changes of the country.
-
the question is why would a republican do this today?
what vile rhetoric has the NRA used?

you just made that up right this very moment
no one has ever said that before or even ever thought it
It can't possibly be true and it must just be your irrationally hatred of Palin that make you say that

hahaha so pointing out the hypocrisey of obama and the rest of the liberal goof troop who railed against armed guards to protect children at school while their children are guarded by armed guards 24/7 is reprehensible?
no wonder you fundy liberals have such a hard time with reality.
-

YES> I'm afraid she is. Ask 50 random people on the street to name THREE republicans. I bet ya we'd hear "Palin" a lot more than Cruz, Rand, or any other other new GOP leaders who should be in the forefront of voters minds.
In political circles like message boards, yes, she's obscure. But to the general public, SHE is the one getting the headliner slot at CPAC and the headlines everywhere. Did she get more NRA speaking time/better slot than the others as well?
Palin, Trump, Mitt. Your top 3 more recognized repubs, I'd bet ;)

Funny - when Mr. NWO flip flopped on taxes the liberals trashed him all the way to clinton presidency in 1993.
Typical liberal liars.
F the bushs and f every liberal communist traitor scumbag.

yeah, if only those liberals (who never voted for him in the first place) hadn't "trashed" him then all the conservatives would have voted for him
that makes perfect sense

Most conservatives are not cultists and slaves to these criminals like the liberal goof troop who accept literally anything from their messiahs.

meaningless jibberish in reference to conservatives who chose not to vote for Bush
if you have nothing to say (especially when you're attempting to answer a question that isn't even addressed to you) just STFU
why don't you PM Fairy. That dude has a raging hard on for you and I'm sure he will entertain your rambling nonsense

This is the dumbest post I've ever seen on getbig.
You hate Bush, I hate Bush, we all do.

Interesting. You bring up statistics about the declining percentage of households with guns while also ignoring the 2+ decades long decline in the murder rate in this country.
So, really, it's not a problem at all.

Maybe, but I doubt it. I would think most people would name Bush, Boehner, and Limbaugh....then start going down the celebrity list like Norris, Willis, etc. haha Either way, one person cannot bring down a party.

as uninformed as most ppl are about politics I dont think most ppl could name 3 politicians currently serving

decline in violent crime is mentioned in the link I posted
why did you mention it?

Really? Because both Mitt and Palin brought down their respective party campaigns.
-
Really? Because both Mitt and Palin brought down their respective party campaigns.
I'd disagree. McCain had plenty of fuck-ups without Palin to screw his campaign over. Same with Mitt...Rhoades and Stuart Stevens were often out-played by the Obama campaign and, IMO, they failed to often react with a degree of Presidential maturity expected of a candidate.
