im just curious if anyone else has experienced this and what have you taken to control the flare ups. mines is currently flared up and im struggling to control it. been taking asacol, probiotics, aloe vera gel caps, charco caps, and digestive enzymes. any info would be appreciated. its really draining during the day and especially during the workouts. damn constant cramping and shitting sucks. wouldn't wish it on anyone.....well maybe my worst enemy lol please no typical "getbigger" smartass responses

Anti-inflammatory diet bro. Heavy on the omega 3's. Also, take a soluble siber supplement like sugar free Metamucil. Keep your protein intake moderate, never super high.

Friend of mine smokes weed and claims that helps him. Not sure if true or just an excuse to get high.

that remind me sad souvenir.
back in the 90's a buddy at the gym got the crohn disease, He told us he got the crohn disease while working on a glass making factory, because of heat, moisture and the fact he had to take salt comp while working.
sometime everything was ok, sometime he was down and out the gym for few weeks or month.
So he took aas, specially test deca to help him recover and give him energy.
I don't know much about the rest of his diet.
at one point he stopped training and i lost track of him.
-
I didn't have crohn's but I had stomach problems for 6 months. Lost weight from the pain and diarrhea. Saw 5 doctors. If your doctor doesn't inspire confidence dump him.
I have no answers. In 6 months it went away. The doctors had theories but all just prescribed anti acid drugs. I think something was messed up with the bacteria in my gut. You have good bacteria and bad. If there is something off with the bacterial then it could be hard for the best of doctors to figure it out and correct. Chohn's is an inflammation response illness I believe. Maybe a completely different problem from mine.
These things made it easier. If you are taking any bodybuilding crap like creatine or whey protein then stop taking it. Creatine and protein powder can be hard on the stomach. Don't take a million vitamins. If you take anything just do a multi. Don't get a super multi that has an insane amount of everything maybe just a multi from Costco. If you have a slight problem with dairy start to weed it out. I can have a glass of milk, some cheese and a yogurt but if I go over this I get the runs. When my stomach went I started drinking lactose free milk and stopped eating cheese. I went to one yogurt a day on good days. If you drink alcohol start to limit how much and how often. It is hard on the stomach.
Sorry I don't have answers. When I was in pain for 6 months I thought this was how I would have to live my life and it wasn't a great feeling. I guess you know the depression it can cause. I hope you get better.

Cannabis does help Crohn;s
Clin Gastroenterol Hepatol. 2013 May 4. pii: S1542-3565(13)00604-6. doi: 10.1016/j.cgh.2013.04.034. [Epub ahead of print]
Cannabis Induces a Clinical Response in Patients With Crohn's Disease: A Prospective Placebo-Controlled Study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS:
The marijuana plant Cannabis sativa has been reported to produce beneficial effects for patients with inflammatory bowel diseases, but this has not been investigated in controlled trials. We performed a prospective trial to determine whether cannabis can induce remission in patients with Crohn's disease.
METHODS:
We studied 21 patients (mean age, 40 ± 14 y; 13 men) with Crohn's Disease Activity Index (CDAI) scores greater than 200 who did not respond to therapy with steroids, immunomodulators, or anti-tumor necrosis factor-α agents. Patients were assigned randomly to groups given cannabis, twice daily, in the form of cigarettes containing 11.5 mg of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) or placebo containing cannabis flowers from which the THC had been extracted. Disease activity and laboratory tests were assessed during 8 weeks of treatment and 2 weeks thereafter.
RESULTS:
Complete remission (CDAI score, <150) was achieved by 5 of 11 subjects in the cannabis group (45%) and 1 of 10 in the placebo group (10%; P = .43). A clinical response (decrease in CDAI score of >100) was observed in 10 of 11 subjects in the cannabis group (90%; from 330 ± 105 to 152 ± 109) and 4 of 10 in the placebo group (40%; from 373 ± 94 to 306 ± 143; P = .028). Three patients in the cannabis group were weaned from steroid dependency. Subjects receiving cannabis reported improved appetite and sleep, with no significant side effects.
CONCLUSIONS:
Although the primary end point of the study (induction of remission) was not achieved, a short course (8 weeks) of THC-rich cannabis produced significant clinical, steroid-free benefits to 11 patients with active Crohn's disease, compared with placebo, without side effects. Further studies, with larger patient groups and a nonsmoking mode of intake, are warranted.
Besides that, and you can just take my word for it or do the fucking research yourself. Butyric acid (enemas), boswellia, curcumin are all beneficial and well researched.I would also follow a newborn around and get his poop and shove it in your ass. Fecal transplantation is all the rage.

Sorry to hear mate.
I had colitis which is similar since i was 13. What initially worked for me was avoiding grains and carbs. Worked well for a while.
Eventually had to have intestine removed due to pre cancerous cells but the low to zero carbs did the trick for a while.
Good luck

Try getting and keep your body in an alkaline state...Easier said then done but no doubt it will do wonders for your body...

what is flared up?
do you mean your lower back?

Gut problems like that are usually a circular problem. Your stomach gets bad, you get stressed, you eat bad because your stressed your stomach gets bad because you eat bad and it snowballs from there.

Not any more. Too much Omega 3's now showing as a huge Prostate cancer risk.

My pops has crohns. Sometimes he has crohns attacks and vomits. Every 2-3 months he has to go for some blood transfusion or something.
He is monitored closely by a gastro doctor.
-

Please tell me your joking, because that atrocity known as the "prostate cancer risk study" has been proven to be complete and utter bullshit. Google it...there's a million of the most credible peer reviewed researchers completely denying any credibility that study had. For example the low end omega 3 plasma levels in their study that they deemed healthy were like 4.4%...the high end plasma levels were 4.6%, which they said would give you cancer. 0.2% blood plasma difference between healthy and death. Im not exaggerating here...that "study" has as much merit as "researchers" claiming the earth is flat.

Try getting and keep your body in an alkaline state...Easier said then done but no doubt it will do wonders for your body...
This is a direct result from having an anti-inflammatory diet as the one I listed above...it will result in an alkaline shift.

thanks guys. appreciate the info. ive also heard about smoking weed and its effects on crohns....have to start getting high! (: will add more omegas and watch the carbs/protein. but it sucks and im desperate to get back to "normal", or at least contain it. cant even lay a decent fart lol

sancho,
The things you are taking keep taking them, but also try some wormwood and cloves. They will definitely be of help and I even think they will alleviate most of your cramps. Ive had serious cramps in the past and uncontrollable urges to shit and this has helped so much.
Like these guys said, anti-inflammatory is the way you want to go. Omega 3, Dandelion root, CoQ10 (lots of this). Dandelion root is a liver stimulant which helps bile acids and the gallbladder to be released and functioning normally which is usually heavily inpaired by crohns disease.
I feel for you man ive had the same types of problems and the single thing that helped me the most was/is wormwood and.cloves. Please give it a shot for a couple weeks and get back to us. I noticed a huge improvement in my bowels and stool formation after only 3 days.
Last thing, dont ever be tricked into taking "antacids". This is a big hoax and does nothing but stop your natural stomach acid from forming, leading to further problems primarily being overgrowth of intestinal bacteria, indigestion, and malabsorbtion. Stomach acid is the greatest defense against bacteria and pathogens on food.

do you mean your lower back?
ya his lower back is flared up from crohns disease. ::)
his ass tube is flared up, ie ulceration and inflammation in his alimentary canel, his poop tube not work.

1--- Crohn's and UC always cause malabsorption. Bad way to go if you are intending to gain guality muscle.
2--- intestinal resection is usually reserved for UC which is invariably associated with adenoCA of colon. Crohn's is nasty in that it can lead to the development of bowel fistulas. If that happens, then surgery may be necessary.
3---The most effective 'real treatment' is with TYSABRI, a monoclonal antibody that is specific for the VLA4 receptor protein on WBCs. This compound causes a decrease in inflammatory change in the bowel, and thus leads to improvement in GI symptoms.
One big drawback may be the development of PML-- progressive multifocal leukoencephaloparhy--
a deadly CNS disease caused by the JC virus and related to the overall immunosuppression in CNS caused by TYSABRI. This med will eventually prevent you from shitting your brains out-- or prevent hematochezia/melena.
Good luck, although sarcopenia is the inevitable result of Crohn's disease.

This is the brand ive been using. It comes with cloves already in it. It also has black walnut which is nearly important as the wormwood. I buy it from the local drug emporium though since theyre almost as cheap as online. Get a couple bottles to start and take the recommended dosage and if it goes good good for the first week take more. Ive seen liver flukes come out since ive taken this and have had complete alleviation from all my stomach pains and general malaise.
I was no doubt on my way to having crohns disease fullblown but didnt get there thank God. However, since you are at a further stage it may take a little longer to see improvements. Get two bottles and take it til you run out..if there hasnt been a significant and I mean significant improvement, then dont take it again. But I feel it will help a lot.
Good luck man

omega 3's are anti-inflammatory. Just wanted to add that I concur.

I have had Crohns for years. Since I was 21, that was when I finally was diagnosed. Took awhile to get the right tests/results.
It has fucked my life up pretty bad. Who knows though, in 2001 I got introduced to Mat Duvall through his ex at the time and started stepping up my training/diet/gear bigtime! So the worst flare caused me to re-evaluate things and what it is like to spend all this money and then lose all this muscle and condition. However, don't be too scared because you can really keep a solid foundation. Just don't expect to be super ripped or super big....you can maintain a nice bodyfat level with nice enough size to be happy.
Just trust me medication wise...if you keep getting flares and going on prednisone for long periods...you CANNOT and will not stay lean and its a bitch. I was lucky enough to have good insurance...I pay private and pay more than 600per month but it covers the drug that saved my life..Remicade. It is given in infusions and a cancer center or medical infusion center depending on your town/city. It takes about 4 hours every 6-10weeks and it is very expensive...I pay nothing except that insane monthly insurance fee...but each bill I get is 18k and it covers that every 6weeks. (thank god). The drug is probably nasty if you read up on it...however I could care less. I was at appoint where BAGS of IV prednisone wouldn't work and after 23days got the OK from insurance (nice right? they wait till the hospital says they are going to cut you open and give you a colostomy bag) before they "allow" you to have a shot at the Remicade :) But anyways...should not complain it has been a livesaver.
I know a lot about Crohns and have been through most so PM me whenever and I will do my best to help any questions. Everyone here is right and very helpful in giving you their opinion on diet/etc...but in reality...sometimes only superior new medicine can almost "cure' you and keep remission longer than you ever imagined. Just don't read the side effects for Remicade,, Humira, or the others :)
Best of luck my friend

stop eating gluten
-
Paleo autoimmune protocol - no grains, dairy, legumes - helped me get over spinal arthritis condition; the mechanism of which is very similar/closely linked to Crohns.
Gluten is the main culprit to avoid, as someone has already said. Literally punches holes in the stomach lining which leaves you susceptible to all kinds of autoimmune problems
-
sweet. thanks for the info. ive never heard of remicade but will look it up. as for humira, ive recently started hearing about it......is it better then asacol?
Yes. It is a biological drug so its a last resource kind of thing. If you can keep yourself in remission with asacol even high doses of 4tabs 3times daily then you should be VERY VERY happy. I did that for a few years before I got my 2nd flareup and needed massive prednisone. Took awhile to get the remicade since it was very new at the time...now its fairly common..you also see commercials in US for Humira..same type of med that TNF-inhibitor..that you can inject yourself sub-q like you would insulin. It comes in rediject pens as well like insulin..I still can't switch to it because Remicade works...if you switch it apparently is not responsive when going back to remicade..your body that is....so when and IF remicade fails I will go humira.
Look up Remicade and Humira online and check it out for general info you know..you need to learn as much as you can. And don't be hesitant to post on a real Crohns/Colitis website..those people generally have had it for so long they know all the tricks to TRY...notice I said try...sometimes things work for others and not for me...same as gear and training IMHO.
I hope you stay well my friend! Good luck and pm if you ever need any info since I don't always check the threads.

DWGE is a gluten and gliadin free prebiotc containing mixture of biologically active materials including benzo-quinones ( the 2,6-dimethoxy-p-benzoquinone (2,6DMBQ), oligosaccharides derived from wheat germ and oligopeptides. The wheat (Triticum vulgaris) is one of the largest known natural sources of these compounds), oligosaccharides helps to stimulate the growth and/or activity of bacteria in the digestive system with a beneficial effect in the digestive process. After the harmful proteins of gluten, gliadin, fructans and toxins are eliminated , the wheat germ extract concentration allows the immunomodulatory effects of the substituted benzo-quinones to be obtained without the consumption of impractically large amounts of wheat germ.
Oligosaccharides can have many functions; for example, they are commonly found on the plasma membrane of animal cells where they play a role in cell–cell recognition. DWGE aids in many metabolic processes of the body including weight maintenance, immune system stabilization, stress and oxidative factors, and more efficient food to energy conversion. Common Wheat Germ is estimated to have a beneficial food to energy conversion rate of 7% but the DWGE converse rate is estimated to be 78%. The vitamin E, vitamin B1, carotene and niacin content of the product are 2-3 times higher than normal wheat germ. DWGE has also been shown to play a major role in the regulation of Immunoglobulin A (IgA), Immunoglobulin E ( IgE), Immunoglobulin G (IgG), and Th1 and Th2 cells levels.
Oligosaccharides also aid in the digestion of macronutrients . This property has gained recent interest from the nutritional community because the human digestive system has a difficult time breaking down many carbohydrates. It is estimated that up to 90% of ingested carbohydrates escape digestion in the small intestine and reach the colon. Here, DWGE performs a different function, it acts as a prebiotic and prevent the cells to take up the escaped sugar . Prebiotic is a fairly recently coined term referring to food components that support the growth of certain kinds of beneficial bacteria in the colon (large intestine). We’re learning now that a whole other digestive system is happening in the colon, with important influences on the rest of the body.
Our understanding of the role of Prebiotics is based on scientists’ rapidly expanding knowledge of how the micro biome–the large population of microbes, their genomes and the interactions between them within the GI tract–can significantly impact human health. Prebiotics are non-digestible ingredients that serve as nutrients for beneficial GI bacteria. Unlike probiotics, which attempt to add certain living microbes to the GI tract, prebiotics work primarily by providing the nutrition that these beneficial microbes need to grow and thrive. Since the huge number of microbes in the GI tract can overwhelm the relatively small amounts of bacteria contained in probiotic supplements, many researchers believe that prebiotics may have a more significant and lasting impact on health.
DWGE is a selectively ingredient that allows specific changes, both in the composition and/or activity in the gastrointestinal micro flora that confers benefits upon host well-being and health. In addition DWGE contains short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). New research has preliminarily demonstrated that SCFAs provide many benefits, both locally in the colon, and in the rest of the body. DWGE also aids in the production of various butyrate (salts of butyric acid), which recently received attention as possibly colon tissues damage protector, including ulcerative colitis.
Additionally, there is some evidence that DWGE may promote further absorption of some minerals that have escaped the small intestine, including calcium and magnesium.
The following benefits may can be expected from using DWGE:
• May increases the immune system’s ability to identify harmful cells for destruction
• It may help to regulate glucose metabolism at the cellular level, starving enemy cells that require excessive glucose
• It may help to regulate and modulate the immune system’s white blood cells for peak performance -- T cells, B cells, macrophages and NK cells
• It may help to maintain healthy cell-mediated and humoral (Th1/Th2) immune balance
• It may help to regulate IgA, IgE, IgG levels
• Supports cell metabolic regulation
• Promotes immune system modulation
• It may enhance the ability of T-cells to respond to antigen presentation
• Helps to activate digestive enzymes
• Helps to lower cholesterol
• Helps to lower triglycerides
• Helps to improve insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism
• Helps to detoxify the colon
