Good piece of hardware.

Goes both ways. Windows out performs Apple, and Apple out performs Windows. Depends on what capacity, as well as the use for it.

In before the floodgates open up on Microsoft VS Apple, or similar comments

solid machine. had one for a while. i'm not a huge fan of OSX, some of its quirks drive me crazy (not to mention i play a lot of games) so i swapped out. if you don't need any windows-only software and are okay with how it deals with window management or file movement then i say pick one up.

Isn't it an arse to find things that are compatible, thought they were primarily used by designers.

depends on what all you do with it. most people just browse, chat, email, listen to music and watch movies. i'd argue that for a shitload of people a MBP is way more computer than they need.

I am kind of an "anything but windows" person. Did most of my development on Linux, but finally had to standardize on Macs in the house, because the PCs were too flaky.

That said, my son does have a "gamer PC" that I allowed because of all the funky games he likes.

The rest of the family is MacOS.

I personally think that from a technical perspective OSX is the superior OS when compared against Windows. Linux could be better, but it's just not polished enough for my taste.

With that said, I've been using Windows as an everyday desktop for way too long to switch to OSX without feeling major pain (see: “how the fuck do I do <insert trivial operation here>”). I'm likely to stick with Windows just because I don't like change.

With that said, the MBP is a really nice laptop – a quality product from the box it ships in to the screws it uses. And the ones with the “Retina” display just have, by far, the best computer screen I've seen. I wish Apple releases standalone retina displays. You can bet I'm standing in line for those babies... I spent way too much time in from or the computer to not get the best quality displays money can buy.

Would be interesting to do a little bit of coding in Objective C.
OSX is great because there's a good deal of NeXTstep under its hood.
Only thing I dislike about the Mac is the gayest of the gay image that they've acquired... "me hip, use mac, all China but nonetheless sooo fol a bettel futule".

Has anybody tried the hack approach of setting up an OSX on a standard Intel?

Been using MAC OS last 3 years.
I use my laptop for Internet browsing, light downloads & email. So technically don't need all the processing power but vs my old windows it doesn't get buggy, slows down....etc

I don't have to worry installing antivirus shit or running diagnostic bs bevause I'm running slower. It's bulletproof for what I use it for. Also apples warranty is the best. For whatever reason laptop fucks up bring it to the store & they'll fix it as long as its not your fault. Or but the apple care + and you can take it to a shooting range & for a small fee they'll give you replacement.

When traveling, I always have my Macbook air 13 on hand. It's lightweight and fits everywhere.

At work, all systems are still Windows based. In light of this, I keep an all-purpose windows desktop at home in order to do work remotely from home.

I am wondering whether the different pads out on the market are worth having. Besides searching the web and maybe watching netflix movies, what other benefits do those have?

Not a computer person at all. Bought a macbook 5 years ago when I left Oz because they were on sale and the price was good and I'd heard 'life changing' things about Macs for years.

Took awhile to get used to. Also had a major manufacturing problem 5 weeks after I bought it (fixed under warranty). Since then I've used it for hours every day and not had a problem.

Due for a new one soon - I like mine enough to consider buying another Mac, but not so much that a windows machine is out of the question. I'm looking at the Macbook Air. If I find one for a good price then good, if not, then back to windows most likely.

I have pretty much converted over to most of my off-time, fun, Internet-consumption-based stuff via a iPad. Unless your day is spent inside MS Word or Excel, it works fine. Learning to use the keyboard can be strange and you really give up about 1/2 your typing speed having to go back and deal with all the autocorrects.

The iPad has a nice app for an SSH terminal so I can administer my Linux servers in the house.

I also have a 13" MBA, but have increasingly been going to the iPad and not finding it wanting.

Regular sized Ipad or a mini-Ipad?

"1"

I have the regular sized one. When I want to watch a Netflix movie, I just prop it up on the armrest of my reclining chair, jack in the plugs and go. If it was smaller, it might not be as nice.

That said, the smaller size has its functions too. I have a 7" Kindle Fire and it is perfect for reading books. The full size iPad is clunky for that.

Also, do pay more for the "Retina" display. The resolution is amazing.

i snagged an asus zenbook, which is basically a windows MBA. in fact, the company that did the casing for the MBA got in a lot of trouble for using the exact same design on the zenbook. GREAT little work laptop.

if i had to pick a tablet, i'd wait until the google nexus 10 lands. i'm an android guy through and through and the nexus 7 is diesel (although i don't have one myself), so i'd imagine the 10" version would be even better.

I hate mac, UI feels terrible to me. I kinda like iPhone, iPod and so on tho. Got nexus4 16gb, surface pro 256gb, ipad nano and shitty asus laptop. I won't buy any laptops anymore as I feel they're useless. I will just build my own pc that suits my particular needs and nexus4 and surface combo suits my needs when I need mobility.

Everything from apple is overpriced. Some would argue that you pay for the quality. It is somewhat true since apple is famous for being more picky when selecting their hardware than their competition thus better performance despite similar/worse specs.

if u dont mind paying big $ for hardware, and paying for OS point updates that fix their own bugs, and dont want to bre able to install anything u want, or dont want to be able to use multiple formats or surf anonymously... sure, get a mac.

iPad for basic personal stuff surfing the web, email, DVDs,games, ect is fantastic. We have them at work now and it's horrible for the things that are work related. So now I carry a lap top and an iPad I wish they would of just given me a new computer instead of an iPad. Then I'd only have to carry one. Very limited if your gonna try to work off an iPad...

For work purposes, it wouldn't work for me. All computers in the workplace are windows based. Besides, typing material into the Ipad with their on-screen keyboard isn't as smooth as I would like it to be.

well it's an ultrabook, so don't expect to be doing much intensive work unless it's plugged in and on the higher power settings (example: processing video or playing a game is pretty much impossible unplugged), but it's an SSD so it boots in less than ten seconds and battery lasts 6-8 hours depending on what you're doing. basically i take that to the courthouse with me and work, then back in the room i fire up my beefier lenovo y580 for media and gaming. i'd have a desktop, but with how much i travel it's just easier to have notebooks even for gaming and whatnot.

i'm also a google whore, i keep everything synced to the cloud. another reason i can't go apple.
