Has anybody tried the hack approach of setting up an OSX on a standard Intel?

I have not, but I know many who have with success.

I have pretty much converted over to most of my off-time, fun, Internet-consumption-based stuff via a iPad. Unless your day is spent inside MS Word or Excel, it works fine. Learning to use the keyboard can be strange and you really give up about 1/2 your typing speed having to go back and deal with all the autocorrects.

The iPad has a nice app for an SSH terminal so I can administer my Linux servers in the house.

I also have a 13" MBA, but have increasingly been going to the iPad and not finding it wanting.

Regular sized Ipad or a mini-Ipad?

I have the regular sized one. When I want to watch a Netflix movie, I just prop it up on the armrest of my reclining chair, jack in the plugs and go. If it was smaller, it might not be as nice.

That said, the smaller size has its functions too. I have a 7" Kindle Fire and it is perfect for reading books. The full size iPad is clunky for that.

Also, do pay more for the "Retina" display. The resolution is amazing.

When traveling, I always have my Macbook air 13 on hand. It's lightweight and fits everywhere.

At work, all systems are still Windows based. In light of this, I keep an all-purpose windows desktop at home in order to do work remotely from home.

I am wondering whether the different pads out on the market are worth having. Besides searching the web and maybe watching netflix movies, what other benefits do those have?

i snagged an asus zenbook, which is basically a windows MBA. in fact, the company that did the casing for the MBA got in a lot of trouble for using the exact same design on the zenbook. GREAT little work laptop.

if i had to pick a tablet, i'd wait until the google nexus 10 lands. i'm an android guy through and through and the nexus 7 is diesel (although i don't have one myself), so i'd imagine the 10" version would be even better.

Mac OS X is not as smooth as it used to be, Apple's put it on the back burner and prioritized iOS.

I hate mac, UI feels terrible to me. I kinda like iPhone, iPod and so on tho. Got nexus4 16gb, surface pro 256gb, ipad nano and shitty asus laptop. I won't buy any laptops anymore as I feel they're useless. I will just build my own pc that suits my particular needs and nexus4 and surface combo suits my needs when I need mobility.

Everything from apple is overpriced. Some would argue that you pay for the quality. It is somewhat true since apple is famous for being more picky when selecting their hardware than their competition thus better performance despite similar/worse specs.

mac bites.

if u dont mind paying big $ for hardware, and paying for OS point updates that fix their own bugs, and dont want to bre able to install anything u want, or dont want to be able to use multiple formats or surf anonymously... sure, get a mac.

apple is the greatest marketing coup of the 21st century.

iPad for basic personal stuff surfing the web, email, DVDs,games, ect is fantastic. We have them at work now and it's horrible for the things that are work related. So now I carry a lap top and an iPad I wish they would of just given me a new computer instead of an iPad. Then I'd only have to carry one. Very limited if your gonna try to work off an iPad...

That zenbook is very thin. How's the functionality on that bad boy?

For work purposes, it wouldn't work for me. All computers in the workplace are windows based. Besides, typing material into the Ipad with their on-screen keyboard isn't as smooth as I would like it to be.

well it's an ultrabook, so don't expect to be doing much intensive work unless it's plugged in and on the higher power settings (example: processing video or playing a game is pretty much impossible unplugged), but it's an SSD so it boots in less than ten seconds and battery lasts 6-8 hours depending on what you're doing. basically i take that to the courthouse with me and work, then back in the room i fire up my beefier lenovo y580 for media and gaming. i'd have a desktop, but with how much i travel it's just easier to have notebooks even for gaming and whatnot.

i'm also a google whore, i keep everything synced to the cloud. another reason i can't go apple.
