Title: Putin - Open Letter to Obama and Americans

"MOSCOW — RECENT events surrounding Syria have prompted me to speak directly to the American people and their political leaders. It is important to do so at a time of insufficient communication between our societies.

Relations between us have passed through different stages. We stood against each other during the cold war. But we were also allies once, and defeated the Nazis together. The universal international organization — the United Nations — was then established to prevent such devastation from ever happening again.

The United Nations’ founders understood that decisions affecting war and peace should happen only by consensus, and with America’s consent the veto by Security Council permanent members was enshrined in the United Nations Charter. The profound wisdom of this has underpinned the stability of international relations for decades.

No one wants the United Nations to suffer the fate of the League of Nations, which collapsed because it lacked real leverage. This is possible if influential countries bypass the United Nations and take military action without Security Council authorization.

The potential strike by the United States against Syria, despite strong opposition from many countries and major political and religious leaders, including the pope, will result in more innocent victims and escalation, potentially spreading the conflict far beyond Syria’s borders. A strike would increase violence and unleash a new wave of terrorism. It could undermine multilateral efforts to resolve the Iranian nuclear problem and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and further destabilize the Middle East and North Africa. It could throw the entire system of international law and order out of balance.

Syria is not witnessing a battle for democracy, but an armed conflict between government and opposition in a multireligious country. There are few champions of democracy in Syria. But there are more than enough Qaeda fighters and extremists of all stripes battling the government. The United States State Department has designated Al Nusra Front and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, fighting with the opposition, as terrorist organizations. This internal conflict, fueled by foreign weapons supplied to the opposition, is one of the bloodiest in the world.

Mercenaries from Arab countries fighting there, and hundreds of militants from Western countries and even Russia, are an issue of our deep concern. Might they not return to our countries with experience acquired in Syria? After all, after fighting in Libya, extremists moved on to Mali. This threatens us all.

From the outset, Russia has advocated peaceful dialogue enabling Syrians to develop a compromise plan for their own future. We are not protecting the Syrian government, but international law. We need to use the United Nations Security Council and believe that preserving law and order in today’s complex and turbulent world is one of the few ways to keep international relations from sliding into chaos. The law is still the law, and we must follow it whether we like it or not. Under current international law, force is permitted only in self-defense or by the decision of the Security Council. Anything else is unacceptable under the United Nations Charter and would constitute an act of aggression.

No one doubts that poison gas was used in Syria. But there is every reason to believe it was used not by the Syrian Army, but by opposition forces, to provoke intervention by their powerful foreign patrons, who would be siding with the fundamentalists. Reports that militants are preparing another attack — this time against Israel — cannot be ignored.

It is alarming that military intervention in internal conflicts in foreign countries has become commonplace for the United States. Is it in America’s long-term interest? I doubt it. Millions around the world increasingly see America not as a model of democracy but as relying solely on brute force, cobbling coalitions together under the slogan “you’re either with us or against us.”

But force has proved ineffective and pointless. Afghanistan is reeling, and no one can say what will happen after international forces withdraw. Libya is divided into tribes and clans. In Iraq the civil war continues, with dozens killed each day. In the United States, many draw an analogy between Iraq and Syria, and ask why their government would want to repeat recent mistakes.

No matter how targeted the strikes or how sophisticated the weapons, civilian casualties are inevitable, including the elderly and children, whom the strikes are meant to protect.

The world reacts by asking: if you cannot count on international law, then you must find other ways to ensure your security. Thus a growing number of countries seek to acquire weapons of mass destruction. This is logical: if you have the bomb, no one will touch you. We are left with talk of the need to strengthen nonproliferation, when in reality this is being eroded.

We must stop using the language of force and return to the path of civilized diplomatic and political settlement.

A new opportunity to avoid military action has emerged in the past few days. The United States, Russia and all members of the international community must take advantage of the Syrian government’s willingness to place its chemical arsenal under international control for subsequent destruction. Judging by the statements of President Obama, the United States sees this as an alternative to military action.

I welcome the president’s interest in continuing the dialogue with Russia on Syria. We must work together to keep this hope alive, as we agreed to at the Group of 8 meeting in Lough Erne in Northern Ireland in June, and steer the discussion back toward negotiations.

If we can avoid force against Syria, this will improve the atmosphere in international affairs and strengthen mutual trust. It will be our shared success and open the door to cooperation on other critical issues.

My working and personal relationship with President Obama is marked by growing trust. I appreciate this. I carefully studied his address to the nation on Tuesday. And I would rather disagree with a case he made on American exceptionalism, stating that the United States’ policy is “what makes America different. It’s what makes us exceptional.” It is extremely dangerous to encourage people to see themselves as exceptional, whatever the motivation. There are big countries and small countries, rich and poor, those with long democratic traditions and those still finding their way to democracy. Their policies differ, too. We are all different, but when we ask for the Lord’s blessings, we must not forget that God created us equal.

Vladimir V. Putin is the president of Russia."

For years the Russians and Syrians offered no resolution to the conflict in Syria.

Suddenly Obama threatens with just a "pin prick", and both the Russians and Syrians fold.

Do not cross the U.S. military, tenfold the most powerful military in the world.

Putin is a real leader...But make no mistake, the Hierarchy's media in the west is allowing his comments to be printed because and only because they are setting the west up for a One World Government...Putin is a player in the World Order...The Hierarchy allowing outside forces to get into the minds of the west for the sole reason of "the bigger picture" which is a World Government...

Try win a war for a change, then get cocky.

When the U.S. faces conventional military forces like The Iraqi Army, Serbs, or Libyan Army; the U.S. crushes them with ease.

When facing insurgents, who blend in with civilians and use unconventional tactics, it's more difficult because the U.S. tries to limit collateral damage.  The Russians faced similar problems with the Mujahideen and Chechen rebels.

We haven't seen yet a nuclear war,and i hope that never happen.

It doesn't matter if US has a huge army... at the end of the day...there's lots of countries with nukes and chemical weapons.

Do you really want to keep pushing to that point?

Take Chernobyl as an example... 30/40 years " i could DDG the exactly years.. but f*ck it" later still inhabitable.

So after Russia,US,China,Israel and so so, fire everything... how long it would take to clear the planet? if it gets clear. that nuclear dust/cloud it's going to last forever.

Btw: does US has mobile ICBM's?

This is true.   Watch our troops and how much clearance must be pulled in order to remove threats.   Its safer for collaterals but so dangerous for our troops.

Bragging about adeptness at killing, or crushing people as you put it, is nothing to brag about.  History notes cowardly, inhumane and illegal tactics such as agent orange in Vietnam, and depleted uranium and white phosphorous in Iraq, as a few examples.

Putin is the new leader of the free world.

We have a vacuum of leadership in this country with Obama.

Same situation existed with Jimmy Carter, but we didn't let him stay another term.

Putin is filling that void, and will probably do so for the next 3 1/2 years.

The little dog was chasing the Cadillac.  The Cadillac stopped and the dog took the fender in its mouth and tried to drag it away......

Obama is going to bomb Syria.  Then he passes the ball to Congress.  And then his Secretary of State makes a flub and mentions moving the chemicals to a neutral site.  Putin says they'll handle it, and lets Obama off the hook.

All the while, Obama is going to wait around and then send one or two missiles into Syria, thinking that you can go bomb a country without any repercussions.  Nevermind that Syria is closely associated with Iran, Hezbollah and Russia.

Bomb Syria and walk away?  It's like starting a conversation and thinking only you get to speak.

In other words, Obama has no f'n idea what the fuck he's doing.

Putin had to bail him out.  And I guarantee you that 10,000 tons of chemical weapons aren't going anywheres........

from Dan Henniger at Wall Street Journal, The Laurel and Hardy Presidency:

The world has effectively lost its nominal leader, the U.S. president. Is this going to be the new normal? If so—and it will be so if serious people don't step up—we are looking at a weakened U.S president who has a very, very long three years left on his term.

The belief by some that we can ride this out till a Reagan-like rescue comes in the 2016 election is wrong. Jimmy Carter's Iranian hostage crisis began on Nov. 4, 1979. One quick year later, the American people turned to Ronald Reagan. There will be no such chance next year or the year after that—not till November 2016.

Can't you and others see it? Or is that you want to ignore the truth, and "hope" that it is not true?
This is what happens when a generation doesn't raise the the following generation to be leaders...

Yes, I concur.

Can you believe it, two 80's kids agreeing with the Russians.   I may have to force myself to watch Red Dawn and Rambo 3.

The problem is with people (Americans) is that we think that we have the only best view of things, and that others don't have better options/opinions.

There is no hierarchy, guy. Just a bunch of incompetent politicians running things, none nearly as devious and powerful as you suspect. Step back a bit and take a deep breath. Now log off.

from Dan Henniger at Wall Street Journal, The Laurel and Hardy Presidency:

The world has effectively lost its nominal leader, the U.S. president. Is this going to be the new normal? If so—and it will be so if serious people don't step up—we are looking at a weakened U.S president who has a very, very long three years left on his term.

The belief by some that we can ride this out till a Reagan-like rescue comes in the 2016 election is wrong. Jimmy Carter's Iranian hostage crisis began on Nov. 4, 1979. One quick year later, the American people turned to Ronald Reagan. There will be no such chance next year or the year after that—not till November 2016.

JERUSALEM -- Israel has cheered the Syrians' promise to hand over their chemical weapons and sign the Chemical Weapons Convention, but it is increasingly worried that the international pressure building may soon focus on Israel, which has refused to ratify the treaty and is believed to possess chemical weapons.

Israel signed the Chemical Weapons Convention in 1993, but it never ratified the agreement.

Israeli officials insist that their government is willing to ratify the treaty, but only after others in the region follow suit. Syria and Egypt notably have refused to sign the accord outlawing the use of chemical weapons.

Israel’s regional enemies have insisted they need chemical weapons to counter the threat of the nuclear weapons Israel is believed to possess. No other Middle East nation is thought to have such an arsenal.

In recent days, some Russian diplomats have linked Israel's military capabilities with Syria's, hinting that Israel should be required to ratify the treaty if Syria agrees to.

Israel officials say they will consider it, but only when it become clear that everyone else in the region will do so.

“Unfortunately, while Israel signed the convention, other countries in the Middle East, including those that have used chemical weapons recently or in the past, or are believed to be working to improve their chemical capabilities, have failed to follow suit and have indicated that their position would remain unchanged even if Israel ratifies the convention,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said.

“If things change, we would need to consider very carefully  ratifying the treaty, but Syria alone isn’t enough,’’ he said.

Israel has never acknowledged possessing either chemical or nuclear weapons.

An article this month in Foreign Policy revealed a 1983 CIA intelligence estimate that Israel was likely developing a nerve agent at the Dimona Sensitive Storage Area in the Negev Desert.

" Calgal1932 at 9:13 AM September 13, 2013

While Iran is being pushed to have inspections for their alleged development of a nuclear weapon it is well known that Israel has at least 200 thermonuclear weapons which they and by agreement, the US, refuse to acknowledge. When Israel was building its bomb making facilities at Dimona in the early 1960s the Kennedy administration, opposed to nuclear proliferation, sent a delegation to Dimona where they were deliberately deceived by Israeli authorities.

Israel has never been pressured by our government to either sign or admit to having WMDs. They are allowed to have whatever they want without question.

I would have respected President Obama more if he had called for a Nuclear and Chemical free Middle East but since Israel and its minions in the US would have objected that was not about to happen.

I get chills when I remember my now deceased Israeli relative, a major in the IDF, telling me some years ago that if Israel went they plan to take the world, including the US, with them. That is the only reason that they want so many nuclear weapons......blackmail."
