You should have asked me Matt, ive got most of the "oldies" on tape, they were made by a company called Video 4, i`ve transferred a lot of them onto DVD.Here`s a few screencaps from the first Road to Olympia.

The RTO was the first, then they did one the following year featuring Gaspari and Beckles a bit more, then in 86 changed the name to The Challengers and that featured Mike Christian,Haney,Paris,Frank Richards etc.I have all these on tape and bought a DVD recorder and transferred them onto DVD,as well as the Olympias from 83 to 92,in 93 they put a security tag on that stops it being recorded, even onto DVD.
Here`s Chris Dickerson.
-
Tom Platz.
Sorry for re-posting the Dickerson shot.
-
Send me a pm,listing what you want, and i`ll see if i`ve got them.Remember though i live in the UK,but when i`ve ordered DVDs from the US,they play ok on my computer.
Lee Haney.

Still to this day the best ever atmosphere i`ve experienced at a show.

Last one.

Thanks Crownshep. These photos are fantastic!

thank you

Plats in that 86 olympia pic loks as though he would be competitive in today Mr O. Id say he could of grabbed a 5th through 8th spot, what you guys say?
He looks so impressive. Its amazing what these guys attained back then, with Dinosaur age type dieting, and drugs.
They look great even by todays standards, imho.
-

I agree with you. In general the whole BB atmosphere was vibrant and arguably the most commercially viable form of it. Pretty much all the boys in high school, except the nerds, were weightlifting, new about weightlifting, talked about wieghtlifting, owned weights, got the plastic/sand weights for Christmas/birthdays, etc...Racheal McLish was doing commercials, try doing that with todays Ms. Olympia's contestants. Back then the freak woman was Bev Francis.
Todays bodybuilders are pushing the limits like never before, but I think the bodies look gortesque compared to the guys you have shown here. Great job.
-
This is all good shit. MIKE CHRISTIAN LOOKED OUTRAGEOUS. Could someone at least post that 1984 Road to the Olympia online for download?

Lee Haney.
Look at that hack squat machine. We have one that ancient in the back of our gym just for the hell of it as well as an old shoulder machine. Im curious to know what weight Haney maxed out on that thing?
-
I can't get over Mike Christian above. Do you know how lean and dry you've gotta be to show triceps that look like that?
Ahem...
-
Ahem...
The connection here is that if I'm not mistaken, Mike Christian helped sponsor Craig for at least his USA run before this one...the one where he threw his trophy after losing, in 95...I think. I remember Mike Christian putting word out in all the magazines that he wanted to help sponsor an amateur somewhere around the country as his way of "giving back" to the sport. Next thing you know, he and Craig are thick as thieves before his '95 USA prep, if in fact it was Craig's '96 prep that these Craig Titus 2.0 video shots were taken from...I might have it mixed up.
-
wow Haney is hack squatting a massive 45 and a 35 on each side. :o

Some of the best tri's ever besides Dorian.

I've been watching some old Olympia contests / "Battle for the Gold" / "Road to the Olympia" tapes from the 1980s, and it's probably the first time I've ever watched anything related to bodybuilding and actually aspired to look like that myself. Whether it's attainable or not doesn't even matter, it's just that these guys had a great look. Samir Bannout, Bob Paris, Berry DeMey, Rich Gaspari - these guys looked fantastic. Samir in 1983 was about the closest to perfection that I've seen - at least for a physique that I would take myself. I know Ronnie has him beat obviously, but that is another standard, and I personally don't want to look like Ronnie even if I could snap my fingers and do it right now.
I got these old tapes from a friend, and I've looked far and wide for these tapes and I don't see them sold anywhere, even EBAY, but if anyone wants a copy I can do a VHS to DVD transfer for them if someone could explain how to go about doing that. ???
I have the 1982-1984 Olympias which aren't available for sale, and some of the old "Road to the O" tapes. I guess there isn't enough of a market for them to produce them in mass.
Most perfect physique ever:Lee Labrada, at the 88 O.
SUCKMYMUSCLE
-
you are correct, christian sponsored craig for the 95 usa (via platinum everywear) but he was trained by ameen alai who he proceeded to dump 2 weeks before the show and go at it alone. didnt really make a diff since hernon was such a beast in 95 IMO.

MONSTER TRICEPS

great pictures
-
Most perfect physique ever:Lee Labrada, at the 88 O.
TOO SHORT.
-
Other than his height Lee Labrada was the absolute zenith of bodybuilding perfection .
-
labrada was a midget with a gigantic, gay-looking head.
gaspari was probably the worst 2nd-place at the O ever.
the other guys in those pics were far better. thanks for posting them all crownshep
-
Most aesthetic, Bobby B's right up there..5'8"
-
brings back memories (i had all those battle for the O,challengers tapes)
moving over the years i left them at my sisters house in mass
i remember gaspari was super intense and hungry(him and lee haney were actually roomates at one time)
-
For myself the perfect physique would be Steve Reeves w/the exception that he have an extra 20 more lbs. on him.
-
IMO, the perfect physique would be Arnold in pumping iron, but with bigger quads. Nobody can say Arnold wasn't huge, but he didn't have the look of the guys today. Plus he was tall.
-
I think height is one of the major reasons why people admire Arnold. He has the money muscles (chest and arms), as well as height (6'2), and a small stomach. All the rest doesn't matter all that much to most people.
true

Why is it that the oldest thread on getbig in the G&O board only dates back to December, 2005? ???
Why delete high quality content? 8)
-
The closest thing to perfection was Flex at the 93 ASC. Flawless symmetry, no abdominal distention, not bald, etc.

What year was Bob Paris at his best?
Where the fuck are your ripped DVDs? >:(

From what I can tell, the online bodybuilding DVD market no longer exists. I went from getting loads of orders each day to literally as many in a week - if that. I would like to hear from Mitsuru and see if he is even going to be producing them any more. That is the ultimate result of piracy in a niche market = no more production to begin with.
-
Here's a guy whose name you don't hear around here too often: Roy Callender
Awesome physique. Ironically, when he was competing, he was considered a mass monster. By today's standards, he looks slender.

That's fine with me. They are all garbage nowadays.
Nothing will top "the Unbelievable"

Note that had this thread been started today it'd have been ruined by the board's natural white supremacists by page 2. And the fact that I'm annoyed by such is apparently evidence enough for them to assume they "own my mind." Ron I still say you oughta be ashamed.

his legs are still fucking huge to this day
I see him almost everyday

bb reached a peak from late 80's to late 90's after that it went downhill rapidly, i dont know what drugs were introduced, but they have fucked up bodybuilding from being about physical beauty, pefection, conditioning and symetry to monsterous mass freaks with the repulsive guts, and zero conditioning.
with the exception of ronnie in 2003 mro who i think was the best compromise of mass and condition. dexter also looked outstanding then.
i know insulin was about during those times, as i heard it was heany that was the first or one of the first to use and sell it. i think gh ( the real safe stuff, not the corpse brain stuff) started around early to mid 90's so it wasn't that. so igf???? or just mega mega dosages of all.
either way we need to stop the madness and return to the look of those days.
wheeler in 93, shawn 94 etc etc
-
I know the ronnie haters will come out of the woodwork for this post, but even though he is not 'perfect' Ronnie Coleman in his peak form (like these photos show) was pretty damn close:
:o

What are you talking about Jeff? ???
-
Yeah Jeff, what's up? ???
From musclememory:
http://www.musclememory.com/show.php?a=Callendar,+Roy
He competed until age 47! Makes me think moderate juicing can't be so bad.
-
Bob Paris looked great. His physique was a great balance of size/proportion/conditioning.
I think this pic of Serge Nubret is a great pic. Small waist, proportioned perfectly and he looks HEALTHY. The GH/Slin monsters of today pale in comparison to this physique, IMO.
As I read on another board, today's bodybuilders, for the most part, rely on, in order:
1. Drugs
2. Diet/Rest
3. Training
30 years ago, the layout looked like this:
1. TRAINING
2. Diet/Rest
3. Drugs
I think a lot of guys today UNDERTRAIN in exchange for OVER-USING/ABUSING drugs, and the physiques tell the truth. This IS, however, JUST MY OPINION.
-
awesome thread!

Man ,those pictures bring back alot of memories. Those were the guys I read about when I first started. Thanks!!Got to say, I'm a die-hard Dorian fan, esp. the Flex issue black & whites, but I got to honestly say those pics of Coleman are prob the closest to overall perfection I've ever seen.

we have a wise man here. :-*
-
How the hell can Coleman be perfection? :-\ You aren't even in the top 10 when you have alien abs, a gut, and horrendus calves.
There are many bodybuilders that were far closer to perfection than Coleman (or Yates), including Arnold, Flex, Sergio, etc. They may not have won a bodybuilding contest against Coleman, Haney, or Yates but that is becuase they carried less muscle. That does NOT make them inferior though ;)
-
here come the haters.. :(
-
Don't let the GH monsters know this. They are SLAVES to what they feel they HAVE to do regarding "bodybuilding".
If someone asks them about training, they have no choice but to reply with....."Do as I say not as I DO".....
Going through life having to live like that, especially after swearing to make a "difference" in bodybuilding is laughable.
-
his legs are still fucking huge to this day
I see him almost everyday
Ask him how much he used to hang from his waist when he did pullups and dips. Amazing strength. I remember him saying tome "if I had a nickel for every chinup I have ever done".

More enslave than you and your little drinking problem ???
-
Id say Bob Paris had the perfect physique, or damn near close to it. Perfect lines balance and height.
No such thing as a perfect physique under 6' :P. Much more pleasing to look at too rather than 5'8 260lb fridges.
Perfect physique at:
5'9 - Kevin Levrone
5'10 - Flex Wheeler
5'11 - Ronnie Coleman
6'-6'1 - Bob Paris
-

Alex...leg pics...
