Wow indeed.

Anyone interested in the cultural space occupied by the disabled body in America should read the book Extraordinary Bodies by Rosmarie G. Thomson.

In this book she “skillfully examines how the figure of the disabled body has been used in literature in different periods as a marker or boundary line for defining what the ‘normal’ body is or should be. The disabled figure operates to displace anxiety from more ‘normal’ folks, and in the process shows how what we consider to be normal functioning changes across historical periods and cultures.”  Cultural criticism at its best.

You must be kidding me!

I'm sorry, but that's just ridiculous.  Some people should not be doing certain activities. A woman with no arms should not be in a physique contest for the same reason a 90-year-old man should not be in a physique contest.

I'm sure there are many things this young woman could do well at... figure competitions are not one of them.

Hope this helps.

          :D

Then you're as delusional as the other politically-correct 'tards who think this is a good idea.

The reality is it was as embarassing for the audience as it was for her.  Again, I'm sure there are many things she could be good at... she shouldn't be spending her time turning a fitness event into a carnival freak-show.

That's Barb Guerra - she lost her arms at age 2. I have never seen her routine, but I have heard it is very impressive considering her limitations.

howard, im with you. i almost cant believe the amount of immaturity displayed here. all the sophomoric "give her a hand" jokes. youve got to be kidding. thats  the best you can come up with when confronted with these images??!! this woman lost her arms in an electrical accident when she was 2 years old. shes in better shape than 90% of the american population who do have all their limbs and  all these people can do is make fun of her. im ashamed to be human right now!!

ok, at least that was funny, garraeth.

nowhere in my post did i mention feeling sorry for her. i just could NEVER gather enough insensitivity to make fun of her or anyone in a similar situation. thats just me...

This can be looked at in two ways: first of all, it's obviously very inspiring that a woman dealt these cards in life would be able to stay in such excellent shape, but I guess in another sense, it is more appropriate to have separate divisions for the disabled.

It is possible to have a seperate disabled (NON wheelchair) division and the NPC leaves that up to the promoter.
It amazes me how some here are unable to determine when it is ok to crack on an individual.
For example, if some able bodied person is in lousy shape AND acts like an azzclown, they are asking for it.
However, when a person does the best they can with what they have been given and acts with quiet dignity, they deserve mutual respect and admiration...PERIOD.

You just never know what life will throw your way. One minute everything is fine, the next you have no arms or legs, whatever. Makes all the other worries in life pale in comparrison, someone else always has it worse.

It is an increasing question about judging or allowing disfigured people to compete. I believe that that is so full of heart and everything but will there be symphaty judging because of their situation. we talk about synthol disfiguring bodyparts. selfinflicted or not, how do you factor in the missing limb or altered bodypart? i saw a pic of a female bb that had a shoulder that was disfigured i think due to an auto wreck. otherwise she appeared to be in great shape. so where do you establish a judging criteria? limitations? or exclusions without wearing the wrath of civil rights groups. tough spot to be in.

HAHA.

How does she train? Uh.....Maybe she does alot of sit-ups? Who knows?

"Goatboy" is right. People have this silly idea that anyone can be anything. I'm sorry but this is just wrong. That woman being there is just inappropriate. I feel sorry for her really. The people in the audience felt sorry for her.

Sometimes you just have to enter a contest to prove to yourself you can do it despite your weaknesses.

I think if she really wants to break the mold she should enter into a national level armwrestling contest.

I mean,,,,  how can she lose.

That is my trainer as well as one of my closest friends... She is a legend in fbbing and deserves a lot more respect than you are giving her. She is 50 years old and most likely has a better body than most men AND women on this board. She is a statement to what fbbing at any age should represent.

She is a statement to what fbbing at any age should represent? are you  high? you & her are exactly what is wrong with the sport , and you couldn't do anything without the aid of MALE hormones in massive quantites , you all look like men in drag and your feeble attempts to " appear " more feminine are laughable , the implants , the dyed hair , the fake nails , none of it is working , purely from an aesthetics standpoint you're beyond repulsive.

Exactly. Couldn't have said it any better. She would never achieve that level of conditioning without pumping herself full of MALE hormones. If this harsh tone prevents another young girl from going down this path so be it. It's a shame you allowed yourself to be transformed by this trainer.

I'm actually blown away by this woman...really, what excuses can anyone make after seeing what she has accomplished with that type of a physical disability?

Reminds me of a time I was in Venezuela guestposing, and feeling pretty low because my shoulder problem was getting out of control, could't train like I wanted.  A contestant wanted to have his picture taken with me...when I looked up there he was, with only one arm and a big grin!   He looked pretty good, too.  Suddenly, my shoulder didn't feel so bad anymore.

When I go thru tough times, these are actually the people that inspire me.  If they can do it with everything stacked against them, I sure as hell can too...and with a smile.

The sad part is, Amanda will probably come back on here in denial like most pros and say "It's balls to the wall training which makes us grow" lol.

You have to wonder how it is that women, with only a FRACTION of the male hormones that males have, grow to be so much bigger than the average male.  Could that be because the main factor causing the growth are exogenous hormones?  Oh no, of course not - it's all hard work and training.   ::)

No, no.  It's steroids.   ;)

Couldn't agree more, bro. At least a male pro can use, as an excuse, that:"Hey, I just have a naturally high T level. I'm just a very manly man.". While it is most likely bullshit, at least it is possible, in the case of male bodybuilders(Think Skip LaCour). In the case of female bodybuilders, though, you know the bitch is saucing. No question about it.

No, no.  It's steroids.   ;)

lmaoooooooooooo matt c called it half right

Gosh....the nerve of you guys....

Im not going to join in on the band wagon of bashing Amanda Dunbar...Im secure in myself and my manhood that I dont need to bash a female bodybuilder that is doing what she loves and the sport she loves and neither do I need to bash a physically challenged woman....

You guys must feel like "real" men attacking a defenseless woman with words who didnt do anything to you....must feel good verbally attacking a woman who could probably kick our butts with her workouts...

Like I said..it must feel good bashing  these women...its worse than physical abuse and you guys should be ashamed of yourself!

This shows what kind of character you have.....Be yourself, by yourself, stay away from me....

She is a statement to what fbbing at any age should represent? are you  high? you & her are exactly what is wrong with the sport , and you couldn't do anything without the aid of MALE hormones in massive quantites , you all look like men in drag and your feeble attempts to " appear " more feminine are laughable , the implants , the dyed hair , the fake nails , none of it is working , purely from an aesthetics standpoint you're beyond repulsive.

most of the time i disagree with ND, but this time i couldn't agree with you more

I don't care who I offend when I say this, but Maria Calo [in the pic effin posted] is extremely unpleasant to look at, and is very bad representative of female bodybuilding. A prime example of gear use totally destroying any feminine traits.

As far as the topic, Barb Geurra is my favorite fitness competitor of all time. Not only has she done it 'againest the odds', but her routines are damn good for someone with her limitations.

Yup, I have seen it now on DVD. Excellent

As someone who does fitness myself, I find it remarkable how she executes. Arms are such a large part of the routine, even when it is a 'leg' move, if I make sense as arms provide momentum. I am quite embarrassed to say she does this one move that I have tried to do,and cannot :-\

Then you're as delusional as the other politically-correct 'tards who think this is a good idea.

The reality is it was as embarassing for the audience as it was for her.  Again, I'm sure there are many things she could be good at... she shouldn't be spending her time turning a fitness event into a carnival freak-show.

Goatboy, I don't think your comments are meant to be real negative and I understand what your saying, BUT I bet many, many close minded people had similar comments towards kids like Jim Abbot (pitcher with 1 arm and Terry Fox (kid with 1 leg who came pretty close to running across Canada).  Even after Terry's death over 20 years ago his GREAT name raises MILLIONS for cancer reasearch because of his "ridiculous" effort.  I coached the NY games for the physically challenged and can say that after those years I will NEVER doubt anyone......ESPECIALLY if they are physically challenged.  I say good for her, if able body people could find the same courage just think what is possible.  I wish all the times i doubted myself, even though i was healthy and ready to go, I was able to find that courage and I ALWAYS will.  Shows real fuckin strong inner spirit, good for her.  One more thing, if youre worried about bodybuilding contest becoming a circus sometimes they all ready are with all the synthol and acne and red unhealthy bodies on stage, not to mention the MANY able body, healthy guys I've seen on stage that had NO muscle at all.

Ps, i had no idea this thread went in that direction.  Strange thing is that somewhere someone is telling these former female BB's they look great.

The chick that's physically challenged is amazing though

I think females look perfectly fine with as much muscle as they can gain.

Note, the 'they'.Once they start gaining muscle by shooting themselves up with male hormones it becomes questionable.

I have never seen a truly natural female bodybuilder, who looked the slightest bit masculine.
