I go way way back. There are at least 3 geezers in the Muscle Beach thread above that remember shit I don't. I'm guessing they are in their late 70s.

Great question. The early 50s were different times….sweet and very safe. My parents had no problem with me and a friend or two hopping the Pico Trolly from our home near downtown L.A. to the beach for the day. I loved watching the festivities at Muscle Beach. I so badly wanted to be a "muscle man" and get all the chicks. One day I started looking on the web for pics of MB during that era hoping to find one of me. I always tried to be up close and near the stage. Then BINGO I found the above pic. I remember the day and my favorite T shirt which I wore until it damn near fell off from wear.

I was able to stand on the Venice MB stage a few times in my 40s and 50s picking up the title of Mr. MB. And I got a lot of awsome chicks.

There is a huge black and white poster at Gold's Peoria Arizona which has another with me at stage edge. I would always tell others I was the only member that had his pic on the wall.

Time seems to go faster when you are over the hill but not under it!

71 in September. Here I am abseiling at the Warriewood Blowhole in Sydney. My mate wouldn't climb down. Quite scary the first time as there is only a narrow shelf about 10 feet below.

I mention the times were "sweet". Two of my fondest memories were once at about age 6 or 7 my dad put me on the L.A. train to San Francisco to see relatives. He sought out a Red Cap (usually African American elderly men who worked the train cars collecting tickets and assisting with baggage). He found a Red Cap and handed him a $20 spot…"Watch my boy please. He will let you know in San Francisco when he sees his family". A large warm black hand took mine and we together collected tickets from the passengers. I fell asleep until he shook me and said, "Are these your kin?"

Another is my memory of the Ice Man. He drove a mule and wagon. In the wagon were large blocks of ice on straw. He would always use his pik and give me a slice of ice to suck on.

Bert Goodrich knew I was lying when I said I was 16, minimum age to join his Hollywood Gym. At 14 he had Steve Reeves write my first program and keep his eye on me.

These events would be hard to duplicate in 2013/2014.

As you get older you assemble a Bucket's List. Things to do that will give you a buzz before you go. I got on Hanging Rock in the Blue Mountains last February. Was there all by myself. Set up a camera on a tripod and took the photo by remote wireless. The rock is separated from the cliff by a gap about a yard. Doesn't seem much but it is daunting to jump over. Then at the top it narrows down to a couple of yards and where you sit it is even narrower. Took a lot of nerve to sit out there. Quite exciting with no one else around. Walking the 5 miles back to my car was an ordeal and a half that took 3 1/2 hours and ended at 10:30 at night. Heavy kit of cameras and lenses weighing about 40 pounds was agonizing to carry all that way. I figured out how to adjust my backpack now to not be so painful.

Haha...you gotta stop and shift the weight around regularly...been in that predicament many times myself...that's one bitch that really DOES make you stronger, though...

No. I have lived my life a half step in the background. I followed California Gold and enjoyed Huel. Huel lifted, had 18"guns, and lived a wholsome life fighting a lifelong disease, name which I now forget. He was also a celebity in the L.A. gay community.

Well he interviewed a lot of the folks around that area, and it was a good show.  I did not know he was a celebrity in the LA gay crowd...lol...any particular reason for that?

Time seems to go faster when you are over the hill but not under it!

71 in September. Here I am abseiling at the Warriewood Blowhole in Sydney. My mate wouldn't climb down. Quite scary the first time as there is only a narrow shelf about 10 feet below.

I woulda loved to have been waiting at the top and then proceed to kick you in the face as you made your final ascent to the summit.

fibromyalgia is still unknown territory as it has been relatively recently recognised as a specific condition from what I know, so there is nothing at this stage that might noticeable help you.
Some people are recommending acupuncture, might be worth a try.
This is a website from Australia but it has a plenty of useful info about fibromyalgia. Have a look and you might find something that can help you

I haven't heard of this problem before. Usually people have some difficulty getting muscles sore from training. We call this Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness or DOMS. We all get DOMS if we haven't trained or done any acute exercise for a while. The soreness usually goes away within a week.

When you are sore do you experience larger size muscles afterwards? Could be both growth and inflammation.

For a man of your height to have calves that measure 19 1/2 solid inches is extraordinary. If you do a workout now that is intense do you grow?

You had a much better balanced physique than Pakulski in my opinion, Haz.  Great pics.   (no pondering homo)

haha,  thank you sir!!  i was much better balanced when i was younger and could train legs hard, and before my waist thickened up with age.

also, it's tough to be competitive when you are always 30% worse on stage than you were a week out.   i don't know why this always happened, but it did dammit!!

If you do a workout now that is intense do you grow?

i'd be scared to try a workout my body gets so sore.   today is three days after flexing my calf for that pic and i still can't straighten my leg out.

Rick, you have a serious problem. You have done your homework and have not found a solution. Nothing seems to make sense. The only interesting thing is your muscles stay large without any training.

You really should offer yourself to an exercise science department at an University and see what they can find. Might make a good project for a PhD candidate.

Try doing 3 sets of calf raises and see what happens? If the condition gets worse then you will know. If your body has adapted to years of severe training then perhaps it "needs" more of that?

i overtrained so badly for two decades that i literally kept every bodypart in DOMS seven days a week.  i would do heavy chest on monday. by thursday it would still be very sore, and i would do heavy chest again. monday chest day pecs still sore from thursday.  did this with every bodypart.  i don't know if i could have screwed something up at the cellular level from this overtraining.

btw, my calf soreness is finally lessened today

Interesting re the DOMS soreness. Most bodybuilders don't get sore after a while. Maybe that is why they don't grow much, either? I have advocated keeping the muscles quite sore to grow rapidly. Whether this has a side effect later on I rather doubt it. The soreness eventually evaporates until another stressful episode occurs. That could be a workout or something like climbing a hill.

If you get DOMS from merely tensing your muscles for a few minutes that is crazy. Think back to when you started lifting weights. Did you get sore after training then?

sometimes you can get this from trying a new angle or something different. i remember useing a kiser air machine for preacher curls once got the most doms ever. two weeks later same machine nothing. same useing a cybex lat machine.

You are not paying fuck into my SSI. I paid it all. I need to live to age 84 to break even….not incl. the compounded interest which is never credited to your account.  My employers were forced by Federal mandate to deduct MY money from MY earnings. For over 50 years "they" nailed me. If I had just half 1/2 of it placed into a DJIA fund, today I would have over one million dollars in my account.

With all the cheating, typical bureaucratic drain, borrowing from the FEDs with no plan to reimburse, longer life spans, Medicare/Medicade/AHC piling on, the system will fail just like all well intentioned social engineering plans fail.

1. I don't pay into your SS because I don't pay SS taxes at all.

2. My understanding is that current tax receipts fund current obligations within the SS program, but perhaps that isn't the case. If it is true, though, then in some important sense I would be paying into your SS benefits if I were paying SS taxes at all.

3. I don't have any idea about the particulars of SSI versus generalized SS benefits so won't comment on that. The above comments pertain only to the latter.

Personally, I only saw the Swayze thing. I was built a lot like him back in his "Roadhouse" days but just a little bigger. Same mullet.

And what kind of shady business would that be? This probably means you aren't paying into your own SS. Good luck with that when you get old and want or need to draw on it.

1. Working such that you don't pay into SS doesn't necessarily entail a "shady" enterprise, so your comment is a bit odd. As a random example, traders' (those who buy and sell instruments and hold them less for a year) profits don't count as 'earned income' and thus are not subject to SS taxes. In my case, I work for an overseas entity and thus an exempt from SS taxes.

2. I'm not paying into my own SS benefits, nor would I be even if I were paying SS taxes: I'd be paying for current retirees' benefits. And a future generation will pay for my (probably reduced) benefits if I ever draw from the program.

3. Thanks for the good wishes. The fact is that I shouldn't need any SS benefits. The income is paltry (the average monthly benefit is a whopping (~)$1,200, and less than that for a disabled person). Needing such income in old age represents a catastrophic failure to employ the very basics of personal finance.

My stepdad was self employed. He under claimed he income for decades, which lowered what he paid into SS. When the time came that he was not able to be as productive as he once had been and he applied for SS, I got a bit of a sad shock.

Well, sorry bro.

It certainly appears that you have your future finances all figured out and that is great.

Social Security was never meant to be one's sole income after they retired. You are right SSI and SSD doesn't pay enough live a decent life in retirement unless one has other income too. My wife gets SSD. Her benefit is around $1,200 a month. I have SSI and my benefit is a little over $1,500 a month. We would have to seriously downgrade our lifestyle to get by on this if it were all we had coming in. Fortunately we also have retirement income as a result of years of investment which has allowed us to live the good life, as it were, in retirement.

Although you are right in that what one pays into SS is used to fund current recipients benefits, it also is goes into the formula for calculating one's own benefits at the time of retirement. Many people believe the system is in trouble. This has been talked about for decades and yet there continues to be funds to cover the costs. I do think that when we allow government to raid SS for other expenditures, we are making a mistake. You can argue that people should save for their own retirement, but historically, this has not happened for the bulk of the population. With the economy being what it is today, more people at the low end of middleclass, I doubt many folks are able to invest in their own futures. In the years before SS people took care of their own. That was a good system. I don't see it happening these days very often.
