Title: Mt Everest has around 200 dead bodies (pics)
Post by: Army of One on December 13, 2013, 04:38:55 AM
Mt. Everest has around 200 dead bodies on the mountain.  It is nearly impossible for recovery of a body off the mountain.  Most of the bodies are in the same exact position they were when they died.  Perfectly preserved in time because of the cold.  Along the route up to the summit climbers will pass all these bodies.  There are bodies over 50 years old that look like they were placed there yesterday.

The "death zone" is 26,000 feet.  Air is so thin that there is no margin for error.  Immediate frostbite will happen.  Lack of oxygen leaves climber bewildered and weak.  Cost for one to go on a trip is $25,000.

Several bodies are given names.  This one is "green boots".  Many of the bodies are now landmarks along the way up.  "green Boots" has been there since 1996.

“PLEASE don’t leave me,” the dying woman cried.
There was an American flag placed on this woman years later and a note from her family.  Two people found the woman alone and barely alive but could do nothing to help her.  They thought about that moment everyday and saved up all their money for 8 years to make a return trip and give her a proper "burial".

Bodies lay exactly where the climber last took a "rest".  Most of the time they take a rest and dont wake up.

I like doing foolish things myself, but going to a place that has very thin air and is freezing, isn't top on my list.  Even if you make it to the top, nobody will care and more so...I can't see it being a rush at all.  Hiking can be enjoyable though, taking in nature and getting blisters and all.

I am not a climber but I've done a lot of hiking and a bit of scrambling and have to admit, I don't see a lot of Hebrews doing it. Plenty of Japs and Chinese though.

awesome post.  thanks for sharing.

I am surprised the bodies can't be retrieved.  Surely technology exists that allows a team to go up, stay warm, carry additional oxygen and drag them back.

I read a Sunday paper article fairly recently that they were going to send a large party of climbers up there to start bringing the bodies down. Guess nothing happened.

Have a friend who's a big fan of that climbing shit. Don't get it; a lot of the bests finally meet their match at one point doing this. At that altitude, all senses are altered and if you can't hold your own, you become a liability for everyone. Sherpas will try to save you until a certain point and then, it's every man for himself.

They often take people struggling or unsure back down and most people will try to help out but once you go into the death zone, you're on your own because people simply can't waste the time, oxygen and effort on you.

1 in 4 don't survive??  :-\

Why do they make this climb legal?  :(

From Wiki:
By the end of the 2010 climbing season, there had been 5,104 ascents to the summit by about 3,142 individuals, with 77% of these ascents being accomplished since 2000.[79] The summit was achieved in 7 of the 22 years from 1953 to 1974, and has not been missed since 1975.[79] In 2007, the record number of 633 ascents was recorded, by 350 climbers and 253 sherpas.[79]

A remarkable illustration of the explosion of popularity of Everest is provided by the numbers of daily ascents. Analysis of the 1996 Mount Everest disaster shows that part of the blame was on the bottleneck caused by the large number of climbers (33 to 36) attempting to summit on the same day; this was considered unusually high at the time. By comparison, on 23 May 2010, the summit of Mount Everest was reached by 169 climbers – more summits in a single day than in the cumulative 31 years from the first successful summit in 1953 through 1983.[79]

There have been 219 fatalities recorded on Mount Everest from the 1922 British Mount Everest Expedition through the end of 2010, a rate of 4.3 fatalities for every 100 summits (this is a general rate, and includes fatalities amongst support climbers, those who turned back before the peak, those who died en route to the peak and those who died while descending from the peak). Of the 219 fatalities, 58 (26.5%) were climbers who had summited but did not complete their descent.[79] Though the rate of fatalities has decreased since the year 2000 (1.4 fatalities for every 100 summits, with 3938 summits since 2000), the significant increase in the total number of climbers still means 54 fatalities since 2000: 33 on the northeast ridge, 17 on the southeast ridge, 2 on southwest face, and 2 on north face.[79]

Nearly all attempts at the summit are done using one of the two main routes. The traffic seen by each route varies from year to year. In 2005–07, more than half of all climbers elected to use the more challenging, but cheaper northeast route. In 2008, the northeast route was closed by the Chinese government for the entire climbing season, and the only people able to reach the summit from the north that year were athletes responsible for carrying the Olympic torch for the 2008 Summer Olympics.[103] The route was closed to foreigners once again in 2009 in the run-up to the 50th anniversary of the Dalai Lama's exile.[104] These closures led to declining interest in the north route, and, in 2010, two-thirds of the climbers reached the summit from the south.

CLIMBING EVEREST: WHO MAKES IT TO THE TOP?

By John Florio and Ouisie Shapiro courtesy of Bookofodds.com

Mount Everest from Kalapatthar. Photo by Pavel Novak courtesy of wikipedia.org

The odds a person climbing Mount Everest will die in the attempt are 1 in 61.46. On its deadliest day, May 10, 1996, the mountain claimed eight people during a single 24-hour period.

That day Jon Krakauer, a journalist on assignment for Outside Magazine, was part of an expedition led by celebrated climber, Rob Hall. Krakauer was there to investigate the commercialization of scaling Everest, and the expedition included several clients with limited climbing experience who had paid Adventure Consultants $65,000 apiece to help them reach the summit of the world’s tallest peak. Another commercial outfit, Mountain Madness, was attempting to get its paid clients to the summit on the same day, leading to dangerous delays and bottlenecks at crucial points during the ascent.

Both Hall and the leader of Mountain Madness, Scott Fischer, lost their lives. Of those in the Adventure Consultants’ group, only two of the six who reached the summit survived. Krakauer later wrote the bestseller, Into Thin Air, detailing the harrowing experience.

The common belief is that the climbers who die scaling Mount Everest lack the experience needed to navigate the mountain’s treacherous topography, and inexperience certainly was a factor in the 1996 tragedy. However, a 2007 study found that age is a critical component in survival. As the number of older people climbing Mount Everest grows, it has become apparent that the value of physical skills outweighs that of the experience that comes with age. As a result, older climbers are significantly more likely to die attempting to scale Mount Everest than are their younger counterparts. According to the study led by researchers at the University of Washington, “Some 85 climbers over the age of 60 have attempted the ascent. Four died trying and only 12 reached the summit. This death rate of 4.7% was markedly higher than that of younger climbers.” Extrapolating the numbers used in the study, an analysis done by the BBC estimates older climbers have a 25% risk of dying, while young climbers have only a 2.2% risk of death.

And the most dangerous aspect of climbing Mount Everest is not trying to reach the summit — it is trying to get back down. A study conducted in 2008 by an international research team led by Massachusetts General Hospital investigators and published in Science Daily reveals that most deaths on Mount Everest occur above 8,000 meters, during descents into an area known ominously as the “death zone.”

This was actually very interesting to read. Thank you OP.

I wonder what the percentage is, of people who have died doing the climb. They know the risks.

I can't imagine passing by someone who was dying. Especially if they said "Please don't leave me". I know it's nearly impossible to rescue them, but I'd want to try.  :-\

That number does seem a tad askew.  So if our climbing group has 8 people, that means 2 of us are dying.  Uhh, i think I will stay at the hotel, let me know how the snow at the top looks, take a few selfies please.

I do a lot of reading and have read a few great books regarding Everest climbs and recall an incident in which two climbers fell over the side of a cliff while tied together.

The climber on the higher end of the rope realizing that the situation was hopeless ended up cutting the rope in order to save his own life.

Not positive but I sort of recall that the climber who was 'released' fell into some sort of crevase and had no way to go but DOWN further into the ice flow and eventually found a way out and returned to base camp in pretty bad condition, but still alive.

There seemed to be some question about murder charges, etc.

Anyone recall this incident or the name of the book which was eventually made into a very interesting movie???

I believe The Falcon did this and Everest already.  He drank a bunch of beers, worked out near a pond, did 8 hrs manual labor, ate bags of white potatoes, and then took a giant pyramid shit which lifted him to the peaks of both mountains.  Don't ever doubt the powers of John Falcon.

Here are some remarks about the "TOUCHING THE VOID' video. You can find the complete film someplace on the net and watch it for free or you can rent or purchase it someplace.

I recommend you all watch it and I think TRUEGRIT would agree.

One man's opinion ....

Harrowing Just to Watch!!! By James Carragher on May 26, 2004 , Format: DVD

My son and I came out of the theater exhausted just by watching this quasi-documentary reenactment of the 1985 ascent up an unclimbed route on the Siula Grande glacier in Peru.

The film's impact is heightened by the excellent cutting between the actor/climbers and Simon Yates and Joe Simpson, who recall their actions, reactions, and feelings nearly 20 years later.

Disaster strikes on the descent, where -- as one of them notes -- "80 percent of accidents happen."

After Simpson breaks his leg in a fall, Yates -- against impossible odds -- continues to try and get him down.

Finally, Simpson falls again, off the edge of the mountain.

After hours of hanging on to what feels like dead weight, Yates cuts the rope to prevent himself from being gradually pulled into the void.

Simpson's survival and return to base camp is nothing short of miraculous, suggesting that man is never more tenacious about life than when he is closest to losing it.

Though far different in its circumstances, his story rivals that of Shackleton and the Endurance in Antartica three quarters of a century before.

An underlying issue, addressed briefly in the film, is whether Yates should have cut the rope.

Apparently some other climbers criticized him for doing so, but Simpson always defended his action.

I have no idea how well the technical aspects of Touching the Void are done, but to this mostly earthboard amateur, they looked brilliantly and truly shot.

Danger and beauty are scarcely separable in Touching the Void.

When you are not immersed in the terror of Yates' and, especially, Simpson's plight, the frigid beauty of the glacier, the colors within its crevasses are glorious.

A story of recklessness and great determination, superbly told, filled with many "how did they ever shoot that?" moments, Touching the Void must be seen.

TRUEGRIT, What  was the name of  the Mt Everest  book where some of the climbers got lost in a 'whiteout' on their way back down and one  fell off a cliff and the other was found 'dead' in the snow and left there.

But he hadn't died yet and somehow managed to get up and walk back to the base-camp to everyone's amazement.

I sort of recall that he lost most of his fingers.

You''ll enjoy it OTH.

Any help on that one?

That's "Into thin air"..

The guy that survived was Beck Weathers. He lost his nose and I think both hands but really should have died given the exposure.

Fuck them.  How many of them have ever been in a situation where they are being slowly dragged to their death by their dumbass friend who breaks his leg and then on to make things worse, goes and falls off the edge of the fucking mountain and is pulling his buddy over with him?  Always assholes who are high and mighty until they are in the situation.  99% of the assholes criticizing him would never even have bothered trying to help the guy at all let alone keep trying after the retard falls off the edge and is dragging them over.  Fuck that comment makes me mad!!
Does sound cool.

TG, One of my best friends throughout my school years and his wife did some amazing work for a foreign corporation and were given the opportunity to go anyplace in the world as a way of saying "Thanks!",

They chose to go to Khatmandu and take that long hike up to the Everest Base Camp just below that 'ice flow' but with no intent of going any further.

When they returned to the states he contacted me and encouraged me to go with them on their next trip to Everest and possibly even consider going to the top.

To make a long story short, I declined ... but they did go back for a second time and loved evey minute of it even though they never go to the top.

They say that flying into Khatmandu is quite an experience in itself.

Why the descent???

I think it's roughly 80 percent of all serious accidents that happen on the descents. Lots of factors both mental and physical. People relax more if they've summited and pay less attention. Eagerness to get back down. Physically, it is different type of mountaineering as well because the terrain is now all downhill. Also, some people are fried as they expended all their energy just getting to the top.

Seriously, i would think it is the "relaxing" you do after reaching the summit.  You think the hard part is done and then you break your leg like a fool and die sitting there on the descent.

Before this topic passes on, I'd like to recommend another 'read' based on one man's 7 day trek to the top and back again with some interesting comments about the climber who lost his nose (as shown in one of the above photos.)

It starts off with lots of great photographs and half way down the story about the 7 day climb starts. A very great and informative story.

NOTE: Some of the above photos show lopng lines of people heading to the summit. At present this is a major problem because those long lines often cause delays  during the way to the top (Hillary Step being one fo the chief major probllems as only one individual can proceed at a time and you often have climbers going up waiting for climbers coming down).

There has been some interesting discussions regarding the setting of "limits" to avoid crowded conditions but everyone at the Base Camp wants to head to the top when the weather conditions are ideal .... which is not a daily ocurrance. So when the weather appears favorable, everyone packs up and heads to the top.

There ain't no stop signs nor traffic cops!

Most GetBiggers will find the following 10 minute read very interesting.

Can't they just slide back down...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think a helicopter is capable of flying to the top of Everest.

I seem to recall reading about the heroic helicopter pilot who picked up one or two emergency cases in the Camp 1 area  at great personal risk to himself and his aircraft.

In fact I think that event was part of one of the Everest videos I watched a few years back.

Maybe TRUE GRIT can clarify this.

They should open a gym, halfway up the mountain.   imagine telling the other people at your gym how you benched 450 at 15,000 feet, scaled another 15,000 feet for cardio, did a selfie and a shot of jaeger at the peak, then rode a sled back down to the gym, where you enjoyed fellatio from the hot girl working the dek before snowboarding to the base of the mountain.

Sorry but  I find anything to do with climbing Everest fascinating and recently found some youtube clips that may be of interest to some of GetBiggers who feel as I do about this big, tall mountain that some people dare to climb.

You may enjoy the following and it will show you how really tough it is to get to the top.

And thanks, TOMMY, I found that helicopter trip to the top and am including it also. I never really was aware of that happening until your recent post.

240,the following is a 'cut and paste' because I know nothing about weather conditions un less I can read the 'thermometer' in my back yard. I think it will clarify your recommendation to only climb during the summer months......

For a few weeks each spring (mid April through end May), the weather on Mount Everest improves just enough for adventurers to take the climb of a lifetime up the world's tallest mountain.

So from mid April until  late May, hundreds of climbers take advantage of this meteorological window that only about 3,000 others have taken before them.
Scaling the world's tallest mountain is certainly not for the faint of heart.

Despite the nearly calm weather conditions usually offered up during this timeframe, climbers always have to deal with extreme cold, avalanches, unstable ground and health difficulties as a result of increasing altitude and decreasing pressure.

But for thrill seekers, it's now or wait until next year.

The summit of Everest at 29,029 feet (8,848 m) above sea level is high enough to penetrate the jet stream, a fast-moving "river of air" that can generate wind speeds of greater than 100 mph.

For a few weeks in May, the jet stream lifts north of the Himalayas, greatly reducing average wind speeds and the chance for precipitation at the top of the mountain.

This makes a trip to the summit more plausible than at any other time of the year, with climbers typically taking off during mid and late April to arrive at the summit just in time for the calmer conditions.

Climbers call the period of calm "The Weather Window."

Continued from above ....

The lift of the jet stream, enough to achieve the lighter wind, coincides with the beginning of monsoon season off the coasts of India and Sri Lanka, as winds begin to blow north from the Bay of Bengal.

By early June, the monsoon begins to blast the Himalayas with heavy snow. Because of this, the climbing season officially ends June 1 according to government-issued climbing permits.

A few daredevils often attempt to climb the mountain following the end of each monsoon season in September and October when the jet stream is once again temporarily displaced to the north.

However, autumn ascents are extremely difficult and even more dangerous since the climbing surface is often more unstable thanks to the copious amounts of fresh snow from the recent monsoon.

Same reason minorities rarely achieve anything monumental?  Same reason they live in bark huts in jungles or deserts (except when the white man teaches them or helps them)?

Do you mean minorities like the Sherpas who carry all the gear up the mountain?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think a helicopter is capable of flying to the top of Everest.

I seem to recall reading about the heroic helicopter pilot who picked up one or two emergency cases in the Camp 1 area  at great personal risk to himself and his aircraft.

In fact I think that event was part of one of the Everest videos I watched a few years back.

Maybe TRUE GRIT can clarify this.

I have no idea. Surely not possible to actually land and stop on there. Maybe to hover at the top?

EDIT: Seen the vid. Tommy was right.

Damn, man. Was looking at various altitude records for all crafts, and saw this:

Quote
1961—4 May—34.668 km (113,740 ft); Commander Malcolm D. Ross and Lieutenant Commander Victor A. Prather, Jr. (US Navy) in Strato-Lab V, using an unpressurized gondola. After descending, the gondola containing the two balloonists landed in the Gulf of Mexico. Prather slipped off the rescue helicopter's hook into the ocean and drowned.

So after all that, the guy falls off the copter line and drowns. Damn, what a story.

Fucking awesome, this only makes me want to climb it more. The death zone...imagine how manly and hardcore it must feel as you  make it to the top inching past all these dead betas that lacked the will power along the way, I mean your fucking testosterone would increase tenfold and once you get to the pinnacle and rip off your shirt and hit a most muscular with a primitive roar and come back down, you would have a beard to put the great civil war generals to shame and women would be lined up in tbe snow with their legs open waiting for you to fill them with your seed one by one

Wouldn't it be fucking awesome if you made it to the top, made a most muscular pose, lost your balance in the process and fell off the mountain before climbing back down?

Really?

That can't be right - are you sure it's not something like 4% die?

25% seems WAY too high?

4.3% of the climbers die. There are many article on this.

25 is way too high, I think they mixed that up with k2, which I believe is around that, along with another mountain in South America.

It's 4%

you can do the trek into evererst base camp. typically takes about 14-20 days if you do the circuit thru the goyka valley or 10 if you go right in and back.

this is my next big trek in 2015 as i am doing salkantay to macchu picchu with my brother in aug 2014.

nothing is more majestic or breath taking or humbling than the mountains. the immensity and power of them is unexplainable for me.

There was a big scandal a few years back because a TV channel from New Zealand actually recorded a man dying and left him to die, even though the man was begging for help.

These fuckers get home to NZ and actually show the "harshness" of Everest to everyone's amazement and disgust.

That's the reason why the Discovery Channel stopped running that "Climbing Everest" show, because it was a really fucked up place to be in.

you risk your own life when you stop to help someone on everest. chances are if they are bad enough to need help at any point they are too far gone to get back down with safely. why risk your life to save a life that cannot be saved. its the harsh reality of everest.

Cusco  :)

yessir.

spent 3 days in cusco 2 years ago before i did the inca trail to MP. very cool little city. the area in general is very historically rich w incan influence. the inca were very skilled builders. the temples at sacred valley point to this. even existing structures in cusco are well in tact and lived in to this day having been built over 200 years ago. the spanish came and tried to duplicate the incan style of building and failed misreably. the inca were very skilled people and very hard workers. im looking forward to going back. its my brothers 60th bday and its his bucket list trip to do with his little bro.

and a little known fact the cusco football squad in its day was actually better than the peruvian squad they fielded for international competition. i love picking up knowledge and the history of places i have been. i could go on forever bro.

I had dinner recently with a guy that climbed Mt. Everest.  He's an old family friend, and the stories he shared from the experience were pretty incredible!  He said he specifically remembers passing two bodies up there, and just how eerie it was just how long they've been there!

Incredible feat!
