I think you'll find that most adults haven't smoked weed in twenty years and dont give a fuck. That is, those of us with careers.

Business is booming. People with jobs, spending money on things they enjoy.
http://www.buzzfeed.com/mbvd/colorados-marijuana-shops-made-more-than-1-million-on-first
The first day of recreational marijuana sales in the state of Colorado was a huge monetary success, shops said, bringing in more than $1 million in recreational and medical pot sales. Many await what will happen on day two and beyond after Colorado became the first U.S. state to sell legal recreational weed. Washington has also legalized the drug, but sales will not begin until later this year. In 18 other states, medical marijuana is legal.
Worldwide, Colorado is on the forefront of the legalization movement. In the Netherlands, marijuana is technically illegal, but has been widely smoked in Amsterdam and other parts of the country since 1976 when it was informally decriminalized. In December last year, Uruguay became the first country to legalize the cannabis industry, but it has yet to implement the law.
Tourists and locals waited in long lines and endured cold weather in order to buy legal weed on what some called Green Wednesday.

No need to be an elitist, Wiggs. I loves me some nugs, but this is a huge step in the right direction. Look at all that juicy tax flowing back into the economy. People are happy to pay a little tax for quality control and being able to enjoy smoking weed and abiding by the law at the same time.
-
Huh. Cuz in theory they should just be planting the first seeds, no? ;D
Had me some fucking schwag bags in Denver. We thought we were hardcore because we'd smoke an 8th. ::)

I think you'll see the market reach a lower equilibrium price within a year as novelty consumers drop out of the market.
Also, the higher price is probably serving as a rationing mechanism by lowering the quantity of weed demanded such that only the people who really want it are getting it, thus assuaging the fears of the 'legal->drastically increased consumption crowd'. Yet the state still has a new revenue stream: a win-win.
Finally, since people could easily get a hold of weed from dealers before, I doubt dealer proceeds are suddenly going to go up much, or at all. Rather, the size of their market should stay about the same or otherwise shrink a bit since some of their former customers will be interested in acquiring weed the legal way, even in the face of increased prices.
Oh well, these are what my microeconomic intuitions tell me. Maybe they are complete shit.

An oz. of hydro goes for about 360-400 here in Texas and it's not that great.
Now an oz. of Mexican dirt weed is about 40.

So you must be smoking your brains out, right ?
-
There's crazy prices all around. It's the free market-why would it be any different than a company selling head phones like Beats By Dre for $400 bucks?
If people are willing to pay for it there's somebody willing to sell it.
Colorado made $100,000 in taxes within the first hours of legal weed sales.
Fail? Hardly.
Besides, the dealers sell "kind", "hydro", or whatever for $100 a quarter and $50 a eighth anyway. Regular stuff is $30 to $40 a quarter, $20 an eighth.

i dont know much about pot... how much is an ounce? how long would that last a person?
i bet there are many people, like yuppies or teachers or cops or whatever... that would never buy weed no matter how cheap before... but they'll OVERpay for a small amount for weekend warrior getting stoned.
Plus dealers now know they can deal in a much more brazen manner... their product isn't nearly as illegal as it was last week. People can smell the reefer smoke, and they can hold up a legal package to explain it away, while carrying on business.

I doubt it. With the govt now collecting tax on it, they will most likely come down much harder on dealers.
-
Big mistake.
Big Big mistake.
Weed is a 'gateway' drug to heroin and other un-social drugs that people take alone or at home.
It's also pretty mild, but has far reaching schizophrenic properties that are nowhere near as bad in far stronger effecting drugs.
-

Yes.
Everyone knows.
That's because it's legal. And it was the first day. You're really coming off as a stupid stoner, Wiggs.

You could be right. It's going to be interesting to see how things work now on the illegal end. I bet falsified paperwork is everywhere soon. Repacking things. Delivery services. Buying, re-selling with different weed inside.
A crew of 10 kids can now hold ten ounces and as long as they have receipts, it's legal. Now, the weed inside can be anything, and they're not getting searched. They can re-sell it, etc. Or the smart drug dealers are getting licenses and selling in bulk cheaper, out the back of the store?
Gonna be interesting. As long as they're throwing the book at people that smoke and drive, I'm okay with it. Plus i bet the Nuggets have the best free agent class in NBA history. Lebron AND Melo be heading there in June...
-
That...is called trolling

Ill guess that was sarcasm. If not momma and daddys liquor supply is the gateway drug, always has been

One of my family is a mental health nurse at Rampton Hospital.
Secondly, a close friend and a prolific weed smoker was jailed for five years after his dealer couldn;t get any weed due to a recent bust, and after a week he bought some heroin off him and long story short, it f*cked his life up.
Weed is fine for the lion's share of users - but the majority of heroin users advanced on from weed, and not from speed, ecstasy, coke or any other 'social' drugs.

You have me all wrong. Im not looking to win or lose an argument.
The figures will prove themselves over time.
Those whom have had a member of the family, friend or whatever dabble in heroin , shall all testify they were a habitual pot smoker beforehand.

From weed to heroin. This must be a UK thing.

LOL exactly. I'm all for decriminalizing most drugs. I'm also for drug tests in the workplace. Always makes me laugh when I hear someone trying to beat the test, usually bottom of the barrel fuckups who can't help themselves.

All of the junkies i've met over the years started off with booze.
I'm sure there is a handful of stoners who jumped into meth or heroin, but i know thousands of people who smoked weed regularly and they are perfectly normal people of society today. However, most of the people i know who drank for years have really fucked up lives.
My mom smoked pot for 10 years and is now a college professor in psychology. Her brother drank for 10 years and was a meth head who died of a heart attack at 48 years old.
Just my .02

Pfft..you pay that in Aus for quality weed, no complaints..must be because we get paid on average more?
-
If you pay more than $200 an O for kush or sour diesel you need a new connect
-
Is that a lot? When I smoked pot (early 90's) it was like $350 for an ounce of killer humboldt. I'm sure this new stuff is way better than that.
$50 for dirt Mexican brown weed that wouldn't get you high but would pop seeds all over your new Phish shirt
Stoners ::)

Obamacare at it's best.
Your taxes will be paying for their obamacare when they get lung cancer from the carcinogens and diabetes from their munchies.

An ounce is 28 grams. A nice personal joint is roughly .5 grams. 1 joint per day and an ounce will last you 56 days. $400/56 and you're looking at roughly $7 per day for a nice habit. Obviously if you smoke more the habit becomes more expensive.
-
Put that shit in a bag and fuck it. That's some bullshit. Looks like pot dealers aren't out of work. Complete fail.
hey brother, lol, first you want it legal, then you want it free ;D
but this is kinda proof right there that the govt manufacturing ,control and sale process costs much more than what a dealer would do.
a price double than the black market price is always about to be expected when the govt takes over.
-
Forget "big tobacco" and welcome in "bigger cannabis"
-
Ha! Last time my friends cousin bought an ounce it was only $200. Fuck that 400 bs.
-

Actually as ironic as it sounds, there's something about marijuana that keeps people's fasting blood sugar a lot lower. It's a glucose disposal agent and they believe that may be what causes the munchies. It's being investigated because they may be able to make a new glucose disposal agent that could be taken orally from whichever cannabinoid is responsible. And even if a drug isn't developed, they will still learn a lot about the endocannabinoid system.

Everyone says it's going to be a win fall for taxes since it's taxed at 25%. If it's so expensive it will still be sold illegally.
Another thing is driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. You shouldn't be driving after smoking pot. They can test for marijuana but they can't test if you were smoking that day or the day before. No standard has been determined what's over the limit with marijuana in your system.

Well, they still did a million in sales on the first day. And illegal drug sales will NEVER go away entirely, so we might as well mitigate dangers as best we can realistically.
No one expected to legalize marijuana and have everything magically fall into place. It's a process. And it's a better one than prohibition. At the very least, tax dollars are being collected which is awesome.
-
That $15/gram. It's a markup over dealers for sure, but it's fair. They have to pay taxes, rent/lease payments, security, accountants, yadda yadda.
You can get bootleg booze and cigarettes for cheaper than what the store sells but the vast majority of people would rather just walk in to a legit business to purchase.

There's a lot more overhead running a legal store and paying business fees and tax than buying a backpack, a box of sandwich baggies, a digital scale and standing behind a mall parking lot.

So you figure if he'd been able to get MJ, he wouldn't have scored the heroin?
-
^^^ It does sound like pot head logic, doesn't it?
-
He was unable to break a small law, so he felt the need to break a much bigger law. I can understand addiction definitely, but he could have also legally bought a bottle of jack and just drank himself to sleep. I don't see Heroin as a need.
it's like being unable to jaywalk because a police car is sitting there... so you carjack an old lady and your justification, upon getting caught, was "hey, you should have let me jaywalk".
-
Either accessing MJ would have prevented him from buying the heroin, or he was somehow bound to do heroin.
So which is it?
???

Just because someone tried weed first, then heroin - how do you prove that the weed caused the user to try the H?
Cause and effect - where is the link?
-
From weed to heroin. This must be a UK thing.
many people who are busted for heroin,Oxy, subs even crack have weed on them...you talk to them and they started out with the weed. Sometimes it was weed and booze, but they progressed on. Especially if they have addictive personalities. After awhile weed is pretty boring, then comes the hard shit...
Look at our Tbombz for instance...not for the weed, but for the addictive personality, and look at his descent.

I don't buy slippery slope, 'gateway' reasoning. "Well, he was on that pot." As if 'the pot' led to every mishap since. Seems like a great way to avoid having to think about why someone would be so interested in getting wasted in the first place, which is where the actual causes of drug use lie.
Legalization, if anything, will insulate users from criminal circles where other drugs are at hand and make it less likely that they will 'graduate' to other drugs. More to the point, however, the decision to use a drug - any drug - is up to the individual (adult, using responsibly as with alcohol, etc).
I haven't used an illegal rec drug in 15 years. Tbh I didn't derive much enjoyment from drugs.

I think it's up in the air, for some it's not, for others it is...
Kinda like how people start with petty theft, then racket it up to grand larceny, then burglary, then robbery...
I agree that it's an individual decision...

Just makes you sleepy and handicapped and headaches anyway
