Title: Old-School RAW thoughts:
Post by: Montague on January 07, 2014, 08:20:15 AM
Let's open up a discussion:

Anybody stomach the show long enough to see Jake's appearance at the end? I wondered if he'd be there with DDP appearing. He looked decent; not grotesquely fat, appropriately dressed with a fitting haircut.

What I really wonder is if there's now a chance the Fed will use him in some capacity like he's been hinting at over the last few months.

Arn Anderson got a nice pop last night, too. He certainly deserves it, and  I'm sure being south of the Mason-Dixon Line didn't hurt, either. Good for him!

Nikolai looked happy and healthy. I believe he still lives in the Baltimore area; I have family down there who used to regularly run into him. But, I was a bit surprised Iron Sheik was absent.

I got home late and caught the last few minutes. Seeing Jake, made me think that it's nice to see he's gotten his sh!t together, for now, but, from a wrestling standpoint, a late middle-aged Jake Roberts coming down the aisle did not project a feeling of impending doom, even with Damien in tow.

I do want to see the segment with Piper and his heir apparent Dean Ambrose.

Piper looked pretty plump; thereby squashing any rumors I've heard of a match involving him and Hogan at Mania. I thought last night's Pit segment was a tad weak. It felt rushed, and the audience didn't seem very into it. But, to be fair, it seems that audience apathy has been common in recent years in general - at least from what I've seen, and compared to years prior to that.

I can't stand Ambrose.  He's trying too hard to play the on-the-edge, slightly unhinged character, and it's not convincing at all.

Yes well with Levesque running the ship and Vince losing his mind now is the perfect opportunity to start up a new promotion.

Ooh... Is the old man losing it for real?

Come on, spill the beans if you know something!

During the Jake bit, Dean Ambrose appeared to be laughing while the snake was on top of him.

According to Jake, this was because Punk said "The snake just took a sh!t on your chest."

There appeared to be some kind of "substance" left on him. Maybe Jake should have let the snake clean out a little bit more before the show.

That was always a problem with animal gimmicks. You could never control an animal's bodily functions. Dynamite tells in his book the story of Matilda pissing in the ring before a match once. He said it was everywhere, dripping over the apron, etc.!

I have such fond memories of the late 90's wars that trying to stomach the detritus that Hunter and the old man try to shovel down our throats is unbearable.  Perfect example of what no competition does to a product:  shit because no one can buy another product.  The heyday of WWF (thats right i still call it WWFFFFFFF), WCW, and ECW was the most entertaining time in wrestling history.  The NWO, DX, Austin, etc.  it was such a great time to be a wrestling fan.  I stopped watching regularly years ago.  I knew it was all over for sure when the old man bought out WCW and ECW.  Tuned out after that.  Sad to see what  a pile of shit it has become.

Agree, and even when they have something good, like the "Zeb Colter" character, they don't do anything with it.

IMO, the wrestling business began dying after the Fed's acquisition of WCW & ECW. The final blow was the Benoit tragedy.

That's when the shows began going downhill, which was also shortly after the Fed's purchase of WCW.
Coincidence?

Your absolutely right now that I think about it. When u have no competition, you don't put forth a good effort for shows. A buddy of mine just saw an ROH show...10 bucks a ticket. Best show hes seen.

I can't understand why ROH hasn't taken off more.

They're not on tv in major markets.

That's what I mean, though: why aren't they? They've certainly got the talent.

I'm just surprised that no backers have gotten behind them. They're established; they just need the financial resources to broaden their product. Everything else is there!

They need a bunch of collective great minds / x-WWE players and former territory owners that know and understand the business.

Ring of Honor just won't take off because the Fed keeps any and all competition "in their place".  WCW evolved from NWA and ECW evolved from what Eastern Championship was into Extreme Championship.  When I watch the docs about how they came up in stature, it really was because the Fed didnt worry about indy promotions back then as much as now.  It seems like any promotion that picks up steam gets squashed before they become another ECW.  I agree ROH is pretty sweet though.  Too bad about the monopoly the Fed has though, it leaves us with Cena's instead of Austin's.  Sad time to be a rasslin' fan.

I liked alot of the show, Jake made me pop like a 10 year old kid! I was begging for a DDT, thats all that was missing and would have solidified an excellent segment for me.

Do you think that's directly Vince's doing?

i would say absolutely, intentionally or not. We have all been brainwashed into believing that if its not WWE then its not mainstream, and subsequently substandard and of no interest. He uses his money and business acumen to annihilate anything that stands in the way of his domination, i dont think he will ever tire of sitting on a throne with no challengers. It is HIS industry, and thats the way he wants to keep it.

Shane was rightful heir to the throne, probably saw the ship would sink and is making a hell of a name for himself via other business ventures. He is the saviour, but only if its done his way and if he wants to take up the mantle.

I think I read once that Shane said something to the effect that the company would, or may have been his when Vince steps down, but the problem is Vince isn't going anywhere.

Absolutely.  I really believe Vince learned his lesson about competition with WCW and ECW.  Let's not forget WCW was BEATING the Fed for a while there.  The old man won't take any chances that any group will take a penny of his market share now.  ECW especially must have shocked him.  I remember when they started I thought this is so fucking awesome I hope they get more exposure.  If that greedy fuck Paul Heyman hadnt sold out, who knows if they would not have turned into somehting bigger.

I'm just curious as to what steps, specifically, Vince is taking in quashing any independents. I've been out of the Indy loop for about ten years, but I'm interested if you know something.

This.  Anyone who shows any potential gets a "development contract" and any character or gimmick they have in the Fed stays at the Fed.  Basically, you work for vince or you work indies making 20 bucks a night.  Nothing in between unless you are an old star and in that case you get 50 a night  :D
