What I don't get is why the fuck anyone brings a gun to a movie.

I have carried a legally concealed weapon since 1997. It's like a tool to me, part of the daily pocket check (key, wallet, cell phone, gun). i've never capped anyone. I've even taken an ass whooping once and never pulled it. You don't pull it unless you're in fear of your life, or to stop a forcible felony.
What I DO NOT LIKE is the new crop of laws... Back in the day, you had a "duty to retreat". You were legally obligated to make some kind of effort to back up, de-escalate the situation. When both men did that, there was no gun battle. When one backed up, and one advanced, then BOOM, the evidence showed who was the aggressor in the confrontation.
Now, it's a bunch of insecure pricks, holding their dicks, refusing to just step back and let a situation calm down. "Stand your ground". I hope they throw the old man in jail for the shooting. And the texting guy, well, he should have employed common sense and taken 5 steps backwards. I'm betting he was talking shit, chest bumping too.
It's perfectly fine to carry a legally concealed weapon to a movie theater. We saw in Colorado how much damage one armed madman can do in a movie theater. The interview with the dude in the theater - that part was stupid. Guns can save lives. What cost lives here was ego and macho bullshit. People - it takes MORE GUTS to keep your gun in the holster and step back from a violent confrontation. I'm 190 pounds, in very good shape, armed and I can fight - and I do everything I can to step back from any possible fight. People die - FAST - and lives are changed forever. Just walk away.

The Texting Couple in the Cinema
(http://oi39.tinypic.com/10ic4jo.jpg)
Fella got shot and killed for texting before the movie started, his wife was injured as she tried to protect her husband.
"Pasco Sheriff Chris Nocco said Reeves and his wife had asked the Oulson's several times to put down their phones as they were annoyed at the level of noise they were making."

I lived down in the Miami area for 3 years and worked in Doral and Biscayne areas. I carried more than one gun. I fucking looked like Frito Bandito.

Guy who shot him is an ex-cop, actually a police Captain. Probably pissed because the young guy wasn't respecting him.

LOL :D
My ex wife went down to Miami back in the 80`s and came back with a souvenir T-shirt that said:
"Miami,See It Like A Native"
It had a 3-D graphic looking down the barrel of a 38 from a victims point of view. :)

Everyone from Florida looks like those two, believe it or not.
Some are taller, shorter, fatter, or skinnier versions, but everyone looks like that in Florida.

The only people I know who do gun checks before leaving their homes are serious gangsters.
Guns at home are fine and make sense, but why does someone need to pack a gun to go grab some eggs and milk at a grocery store? Or bring a gun to a movie???

Different cultures, different areas. Canada just really doesn't have the same level or dynamic of street crime that the US does. You guys also seem like a mellower lot as a whole too.
In the US, it's common for robberies, etc.... to happen in parking lots, etc.... Sometimes guys will even come in from other neighborhoods to pull stick ups in the richer, safer areas, and then drive off.
It depends on the person too, within gun culture here in the US, it runs the gamut from guys that get licensed and almost never carry, to guys that conditionally carry (e.g. bank run, working in a bad area, etc....), to guys that it's all the time. Heck, I've even known guys that have summer and winter guns for different dressing. There's all different levels.

He (the shooter) was a former police captain, so he knew what the world looks like.
Safe to say he prolly carried his piece with him wherever he went. Be it shopping, the movies etc.
Patience and Tolerance of Peace though, ending a life over a movie

At home, you have the law 100% on your side. If someone comes thru your door, it's pretty cut and dry what happens.
In movie theaters, there are limited exits, darkness/confusion, and no law enforcement around. If a killer decides to start capping people (like in Colorado), it's just a bad bad scene. Having a few people with gun permits is a good thing.
They told us that in FL, at least 10% of people you see are armed at all times. I can spot bulges on hips sometimes. Or fanny packs. Or just fat guys at the bar wearing a .45 under their coat, not giving a crap about it.
Same in grocery stores... you never know when someone is at the end of their rope and decides to just start shooting. Sure, it'll probably never happen, and I'll probably carry a gun for 50 years and never use it. I hope that's the case. I pray that's the case lol. But if if if some random idiot decides to go on a shooting spree... IF some dude getting evicted/dumped decides to stab me to feel better... IF some guy thinks it is okay to carjack someone because he has warrant... IF any of that happens, it'll be nice to have a piece onhand to help me safely find an exit.
It's not about being the toughest guy, or winning an argument, or delivering justice... it's just about doing what it takes to get to an exit with all your blood still in your body lol :) Use that gun to create distance/barrier until police arrive to deal with teh bad guy.

I've seen what the world looks like too. I've seen a murder and I've seen brutal gang beatings. I've had a gun held to my head when I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. But I don't fear for my life because I don't invite harm on a daily basis.
I do want a gun for at home for those circumstances like a violent home invasion, as those do happen here too. But I don't leave the house in the morning fearing for my life when I'm just driving to work or to the grocery store. :-\

Jesus Christ. So you go to the grocery store and the thought that enter your mind is that you hope someone doesn't go batshit crazy and unloads? I'm just thinking about my grocery list and trying to make sure I don't forget something. There's always a slim chance someone could go nuts, but I don't know if that should be on the forefront of your mind all the time. That's not healthy and I feel sorry for you.

One of my many therapists told me once that if I felt anxious at night to go out and take a calming walk.
I told her, lady,I don`t know where you live but I try not to leave the house at night.
You could hear shots in that neighborhood all night long.

I used to teach a class in concealed carry in MA. My final words were that carrying a gun would and should make you the biggest coward out there. The mere fact that you can bring a gun into the fight turns any altercation into a lethal-force situation and if you are the only one with a gun, the law will not be kind to you.
A gun is a last resort if avoidance and de-escalation do not work. Each bullet carries a $60,000 legal bill. While it is preferable to be tried by 12 than carried by 6, the most preferable of all is to go home, eat a good meal, fuck the wife and get some sleep without having to kill a man.

Mass laws suck ( I know ) but taking a beating defeats the entire purpose of carrying a firearm. I'm not getting my ass kicked because I fear the legal outcome , if a person is crazy enough to attack you I'm not taking chances on when he decides he's had enough of inflicting damage.
Fuck that noise.
A guy in New Bedford , MA had his garage broken into repeatedly , one night he found the guy doing it , chased him and shot him in the back killing him , he got away with it. Shooting someone who is beating you is a pretty clear case of self defense.

Believe it or not, it depends on a lot of factors. You have to be able to demonstrate that you had reasonable fear for you life. Not fear of an ass-beating, but of dying. You will be prosecuted, so it will the DA will have to prove that your fear was unwarranted.
MA has a lot of vaguaries around the introduction of weapons, the weirdest is whether or not they are metallic. An aluminum baseball bat is automatically presumed to be a life-threatening implement, but a wooden one is not. Go figure.
If he's got a knife or a pipe, you can shoot. But there is no joy in killing a man, no matter what he's done. You'll think about it for decades. You'll have to understand that before you put on that gun.

I disagree anyone who is deranged enough to beat your ass is dangerous and unpredictable. Like most people who carry firearms I look to avoid trouble at all costs if some lunatic just starts beating me for no reason best believe I'm not rolling the dice and hope he's in a merciful mood. Anyone crazy enough to just attack someone out of the blue is unstable and in all probability have a lengthy criminal record. The odds are in your favor.

More people were killed with hands & feet than rifles in the U.S according to the FBI do you wanna take your chances? I sure as fuck don't

You can shoot if you fear your life or the lives of others are in immediate danger of grievous harm that includes hands & feet. There is no joy in killing a man , just joy in not being the one killed. If you truly feel your life is in danger I don't think I'll have a problem with defending myself. If it's just it's just, I would sleep good knowing it was kill or be killed and I have responsibilities to my family.
It defeats the purpose to carry a firearm and second guess when to use it. I took an ass beating and didn't pull my gun that's asinine. ::)

my life wasn't in danger. Skinny kid started swinging on me, I took a few licks, I locked him up, I created space, and it ended. Pulling my gun means I have to shoot him, because at the very worst he's going for it, and the very best I'm looking at the police coming out and interviewing me, and possibly charging me. After all, my life wasn't in danger. I was bigger than the kid, I was still on my feet, he was unarmed, and I created distance fast and he didn't charge at me.
Someone can punch me in the mouth. I cannot shoot him for it. Now, if they mount me and they're punching, yes, I can shoot but I'm going to have to convince 12 of my peers that I feared for my life, and anything can happen when it goes to a jury.
Way too many people get shoved into a wall and pull that glock first... they go to prison for that.

I'm fine with this but not everyone has the smarts to think this way. Most people just shoot without thinking or even without provocation.

agreed. this old man belongs in prison. But it's all up to a jury, since he can say "I was standing my ground!"
A lot of people think it's pro-gun to support any legislation that opens up gun freedoms. This isn't the case. Imagine some smug punk saying "haha, I capped you mom/dad/wife/kid/babymama because she got up in my face. I was just standing my ground!" That'd be horrible - and unfortunately, way too many people get away with just shooting someone who is also standing their own ground.
I miss the "Duty to retreat" part of the law. If you are going to shoot, you'd better show you were out of options for backing up, preventing a forcible felony, or you had backed up to avoid the conflict and the other person ADVANCED. These days it's just two rednecks puffing up in each otehrs' faces, seeing who can pull their gun first to "stand their ground". Total crap.

3 dead after shooting at Indiana grocery store
ELKHART, Ind. (AP) - A gunman walked into a northern Indiana grocery store and fatally shot two people Wednesday night before he was killed by police, authorities said.
Elkhart police received a call about an active shooter at Martin's Super Market about 10 p.m. Wednesday, Indiana State Police Sgt. Trent Smith said at a news conference early Thursday.
The gunman used a semi-automatic handgun to shoot and kill a woman, then walked to another aisle and shot and killed another woman, Smith said. One victim was an employee and appeared to be in her late teens or early 20s, and the other was a shopper who appeared to be in her 40s, he said. They were found about 12 aisles apart.
Two police officers, who were on a routine call nearby, were able to quickly respond to the scene, Smith said.
The shooter was pointing his gun at a third person when the officers found him in an aisle at the store, Smith said. Elkhart police then shot and killed the gunman, who Smith said lived in the area and was in his early 20s. A large knife was also found near the man's body.
The identities of the women and gunman were not released but Smith said there was no indication that the shooter knew the victims.
"At this time, it appears that it's just random," he said.

What you said is true. I have carried since 1983. Standing your ground is insane if you have a gun. The only ones that should apply to is cops and not a civilian with a gun. Your first obligation to society is to see if you can remove yourself from the situation so no one has to die unless someone's life is in danger. Being a tough guy because you have a gun and escalating a situation is just crazy.

I felt like shit reading this headline this morning... We had just discussed a random grocery store shooting... and it happened last night. it would have been more than 2 victims if a cop hadn't shown up that quickly.
Last night I was out for dinner, quick bite on the way... two youths with thick ass coats bypass the line and power walk up to the register with some serious anger in their faces. Instantly I stepped to drink refill station took a flank position with glock in jacket ready to center mass them from 3 feet away with the counter as cover, should anything but a wallet emerge. They pulled out a receipt and yelled about something, they were given refund and food, and their rude asses left without incident. The goofy smile never left my face, standing there with a medium cherry coke in left hand and glock 27 in the other, pointed at them thru my coat. Simple preparation. To everyone in that place, I'm just another schmoe eating my burger with mayo and mushrooms, slurping down a drink. But if a gun appeared, then yes, I was in a strategic position to put 11 bullets into the 2 of them from three feet away with surprise on my side.
paranoid? I dunno... If we were in a war zone, it wouldn't be paranoia. And given X amount of murders happen daily in the USA, some would argue it's a low-grade warzone in some neighborhoods. It doesn't make me stressed... if anything, I feel peaceful and relaxed that I'm able to feel safe while eating, not just "i sure hope that never happens to me". Maybe 1-2 times a week, my spidey senses will go off like this, I'll put on a goofy smile and maybe sidestep to cover while my left hand clumsily holds the bag (remember, clumsy and goofy is very disarming) while right hand readies under clothing. It's always nothing, and I always happily move about my day. I even nodded at the 2 angry looking dudes and remarked about the fries in this place. All was well. But one day, which I pray never comes, if some random idiot starts off'ing people, I will have the best chance to surprise them and stop a forcible felony.

100% correct. The terrifying thing... when I sat thru a CCW permit class a year ago (with the NRA instructor), ironically on the exact day Zimmerman was indicted, they didn't mention this. At all.
The entire class was Q&A about "Can I shoot someone if..."
When I sat thru this same class in 1997, the instructor spent half the class talking about the prison time we'll see from screwing up. He told us you RUN if you can. You back away. You show the first cop on the scene that you did everything humanly possible to BACK DOWN from this situation, and the gun was a last resort.
it's a bunch of cowboy idiots with no self-restraint lately. I hear all these "conservatives" that live in anti-gun states and don't carry a gun, playing armchair QB about how the shooter in every case has all the rights. In most of these cases - zimmerman, hendrix, etc - the shooter ran into a confrontation, being the only armed one, and lost control of the situation and shot.
If you have a gun, you don't chase that kid 2 blocks, zimmerman.
If you have a gun, you don't walk into yard to shoot a silhoueete, hendrix.
If you have a gun, your ass should be the biggest pacifist in the room. Back down. Every time.

The everglades are waiting for these bitches.
