Title: Thoughts on this Phil Heath statement???
Post by: Nails on February 07, 2014, 06:36:20 AM
Phillip Heath
Had to pull out my @kingjames ‪#‎LebronX‬ - ‪#‎BHM‬ today. The shoe game is one that only the real understand. The rest usually throw salt, but that's because they either have no interest in shoes (which is fuggin weird), or simply are pusses bcuz they couldn't snag em before they sold out lol. I decided to buy Lebron's only after he won a title. Always been a fan but I'm even a bigger one now.

What I don't get is, that many of the shoes like Jordans are reissues, except for new colorways. When they first come out, way back when, buy two pair, one to wear and one to keep so that you can sell them later on, or for your collection.
After a while, one starts looking at the money you spend on shoes, which could have gone to something else, that actually appreciates in value, or actually does something (you wear shoes).

Just look at the pic of Phil holding up a wad of cash shortly after he won the NY Pro in '06. That pic still gets posted up today & he gets blasted for it. If Phil post a pic or a comment on how many cars he has or what new car he wants, he gets blasted & is called materialistic.

It's because he is arrogant and pompous and loves to boast.  He has no humility at all.  That's not a becoming attribute.

What "athlete" in history ever called themselves "The Gift"?

Not even Muhammad Ali, Gretzki, Montana or Jordan?

Well, to be fair to Phil, it was Flex magazine who gave him the moniker "the gift". I have the Flex mag that he first appeared on, and did his interview (they had reported his 2 Pro wins his rookie year in his mag). He came off as humble, and even in his first vids he did as well. Maybe it was all an act. Like G_Thang had said, Phil is Flex Wheeler with Jay Cutler as his guidance counselor...and now Phil had graduated.

And look at the names Ken "Flex" Wheeler and "Flex" Lewis...I mean, we only refer to Flex Wheeler not by his legal first name, but as his moniker.

Post by: Mr. Zimbabwe on February 07, 2014, 10:43:52 AM
Fair enough... I didn't know Flex magazine gave him that moniker.  If he was humble he woulda laughed and said "Noooo, call me Phil! Lol!"

Going on the Flex Wheeler premise we to now call Phil ..... "Gift Heath"?

Peter McGough of Flex gave Dorian the moniker "The Shadow", and whoever at Flex gave Shawn Ray the moniker "Suga" and I don't know who, but I think it was Flex mag that gave Chris Cormier the "Real Deal" moniker due to his likeness to Holyfield. I think it was Flex mag that gave Paul Dillett the moniker "Freakenstein".

Maybe Phil just went along with it, because I think he signed with Weider/AMI at the time.

But as the saying goes "Pride comes before the fall", so this maybe foreshadowing events yet to come.

And Gift Heath doesn't have the same ring to it.

You make good points Parker.  But the monikers The Shadow, Suga Shawn, Real Deal (correct about Holyfield).... just don't have the same air of arrogance as "The Gift".

My point is that a humble athlete ....example Russell Wilson(QB for Seahawks) ...would have turned it down.  It comes down to ego at the end of the day.

Quite true...at the time Phil was billed or hailed as a savior of pod bbing. And "gifted" with great conditioning and arms...it's kinda like how Flex magazine had put Richard Jones on the cover with "The Next Mr. Olympia?" Next to him...now Rich is 5'7 and was 198-200 something, and they are billing him to be the next Mr. O? I think it was about marketing.
And Phil took it and ran, his first vid was "The Gift: a New Beginning", then the next was "The Gift: unwrapped"
So, yeah, I can see the arrogance in it.

You can make money from "dealing" sneakers.  You just have to be consistent and know when to sell....just like with any other commodity, I suppose.

There are even sneaker conventions......weird.

I just find it funny that a grown man is into the same things teenage boys are.  At least he's not trying to fuck them (the boys, not the sneakers) (Well, ok....the sneakers, too  ;D)

I don't get the sneaker thing. It looks like crap and these shoes make you look like an immature clown. That combined with $50 dollar Affliction type tee shirts completes the clown look.

You want to look like a GQ man that stops women in their tracks? Lift and do cardio then dress like a real man. Try wearing something like this with dress pants or even a nice pair of jeans. You can thank me later.
