In an interview with MSN.com, First Lady Michelle Obama explained she used to struggle to feed her kids right—even though she received an education from Harvard and Princeton.
“Before coming to the White House, I struggled, as a working parent with a traveling, busy husband, to figure out how to feed my kids healthy, and I didn’t get it right,” she explained, sharing a story about her children’s doctor who pulled her aside to talk about her family diet.
“I thought to myself, if a Princeton and Harvard-educated professional woman doesn’t know how to adequately feed her kids, then what are other parents going through who don’t have access to the information I have?” she recalled.
Her personal struggle helped her launch her mission to address childhood obesity, she explains, especially passing a law requiring schools to provide healthier meals for kids.
The First Lady recommended that schools make decisions for children because their parents struggle to feed their children well.

Re-read what the article said. It's more of a commentary upon how it is harder and harder to find healthy dining/meal planning options these days, even for people with higher education.
It's correct, IMO. Walk around college campus - there's a Starbucks or Taco Bell on every corner, but not a fruit stand. Drive down any road in America - There are 7 fast food restaurants at every major intersection, but in order to have a piece of fruit, you have to park and spend 12 minutes walking through a store. If you want lean and clean chicken breast, you do not have that option these days, if you're busy, out and about.
I can literally buy Coca-Cola at gas stations, restaurants, grocery stores, and machines by the side of the road - but a piece of lean grilled chicken breast that wasn't previously paste and formed into nugget form? Nope.
She was talking about how it's hard for busy/traveling people to adequately plan meals. And it is. Try being a parent these days - on the road after the beach - I mean, your options are drive thrus or a cooler filled with fruit and cold chicken breast that you made the night before lol, and I know everyone with 2 kids in shitty diapers, masters classes, a FT job and gymload has time for that.
I'd be shocked to see any actual parents on this thread, saying she's wrong about society not offering easy and fast healthy food solutions. it IS hard. Michelle obama is gross, she's a glutton, she certainly doesn't follow the diet ideals she preaches... but the point she makes is correct. Even with an advanced degree, it's doggone hard to plan healthy meals with today's schedule and public food options. It's much easier for getbiggers that aren't parents to make their 4 chicken breasts to tupperware or spend 90 minutes in an Italian restaurant. Try feeding 4 hungry kids, 2 in diapers, at 11am with a doc appt at 11:30 and the bus coming at 2 lol.

that's what a powerlifting coach i know calls "majoring in the minors".
for 99.9999% of people if they want to lose weight, improve blood pressure, cholesterol, they need to start with moving more and eating less. and do that (AND ACTUALLY DO THAT!!!!) for a solid year. once they do that and get serious with their training and want to improve performance and overall health to a higher degree, then they can start worrying about nailing down macros, carb cycling, etc. because that kind of shit is backed by solid science, but in an untrained sloppy ass newbie, it has no real significance to them or what they're trying to achieve.
so yes a calorie is a calorie to the super majority of the populace.

LOL... anyone who opposes the schools offering to supplement incomplete lunches should visit an elementary school cafeteria in a really poor area.
Sure, we getbiggers (many college educated and almost all of us pretty wise on nutrition) have no problem packing a lunch.
But think about dropout parents with 85 IQ, a facebook/drug problem, who can barely take care of themselves. Their kids are going to school with a can of mountain dew and a nutty bar. Happens all the time. they get the free lunch too. They always enjoy the mountain dew and chocolate snack, no doubt, but they also dive into the hamburger or chicken nuggets that the school gives them, and they usually eat the fruit cup out of boredom.

look I get that it may not be a big deal now to let the government implement some laws that will make them put their own food in the schools (by the way, a bunch of their corporate cohorts get real rich off of doing this....huge contracts).
but the flaw in your thinking is the belief that government control occurs overnight. one day you wake up and government controls everything you do. it never happens like that. the government never comes at us with a sledgehammer. they chip away with a tiny hammer until they get what they want.

schools provide lunches to some kids and given the epidemic of obesity and diabetes (which will costs us all $$'s down the road) it makes sense for kids to eat a few more veggies and a bit less junk food, refined carbs, industrial seed oils etc..

the problem lies in the fact that the government's definition of healthy food is most probably starkly different than yours or mine. remember in the 1980's where anything "low fat" was healthy? take out all of the healthy mono unsaturated fats and load it up with high fructose corn syrup and now its a healthy food. and the FDA and USDA were on board with that. the government thought low fat pop tarts were healthy. that's what they would have fed the kids in school.
like I said before. NO. i'll make my own choices for my kid. I don't need the government telling me what is good.

schools provide lunches to some kids and given the epidemic of obesity and diabetes (which will costs us all $$'s down the road) it makes sense for kids to eat a few more veggies and a bit less junk food, refined carbs, industrial seed oils etc..

Yeah true. But that was 1980. Nutrition has come a long way since then. There is probably a decent spectrum of healthy food that most can agree on.

It has everything to do with intention. Most people are fat because they eat too much and exercise too little NOT because they adopted the wrong strategy, ESPECIALLY at a young age. And knowing what to eat and not to eat is a simple thing find out IF the intention is TRULY there.
A patent giving their kids a juice box is a failure of intention because they didn't take the time to really research how much juice is just sugar. A parent that actually researches what a healthy diet is will find that out fast.

House Republicans are trying to end Michelle Obama’s school lunch initative and the First Lady’s not happy about it.
She used a White House event on Tuesday to rally opposition to a bill passed by a House subcommittee that would allow districts to suspend the program.
From Fox News:
Seeing her nutritional standards under threat, the first lady hosted a discussion with school leaders on Tuesday afternoon at the White House where she ripped efforts to roll back those guidelines.
“This is unacceptable,” Obama said.
The first lady said families realize the country is facing a “health crisis,” and the “last thing we can afford to do right now is play politics with kids’ health.”
School districts are claiming that the lunch guidelines are overly restrictive and kids are throwing away the required fruits and vegetables. Some children have complained they were still hungry due to limited portion sizes as a part of the initative (the USDA eventually scrapped the strict portion limits).
It is not “unacceptable” to believe that local school districts, who deal with students and parents on a daily basis, would have a better idea of how to feed their students than Washington bureaucrats and bored un-elected activists who dare to tell the people’s elected representatives how to do their jobs.

In my opinion, it's pretty obvious the rise of obesity is caused by to eating to much food, eating the wrong foods and a sedentary life style. And please dont give me the whole bad food is cheaper than healthy food because thats bullshit and easily dismissed.
Its about convenience. Preparing food takes more time than running through the drive through at McDonald's. We also live at a time where both parents are required work outside the home and you don't have a parent dedicated to meal planning and preparation.

I didn't go to Harvard...I earned a BA from Bowling Green State University in beautiful Bowling Green, Ohio. I didn't take any classes in nutrition or anything related to it. With all of that working against me, I know that when I'm helping my daughter pack her lunch I need to include some lean protein (like leftover chicken, beef or fish from last night's dinner) a vegetable (kid loves those mini sweet peppers ) some cheese or yogurt and maybe some crackers because she likes them...if the kid wants to throw in a couple of Oreos...I let her do that once or twice a week. Nobody had to explain to me that feeding her a shit ton of junk food is a bad idea...nobody had to tell me that processed foods aren't particularly healthy. I figured that shit out all by myself

In the late 1970's we started getting the message that saturated fat was bad and that cholesterol in food was bad and the government and other "health authorities" started pushing a low fat, and higher carb diet.
You can look at a chart of rates of Obesity in America and can see that it started to increase at virtually the same time that the "low fat" guidance was introduced
So when someone tells me they can look at a chart of rising rates of childhood obesity and glibly conclude that it shows that "parents do not have the intention to feed their kids healthy food" one can conclude that it's much more likely the the exact opposite is happening...i.e. they fully intended and thought they were feeding their kids a healthy diet. This also obviously makes sense in a broader evolutionary scale where the natural instinct is for parents (human or otherwise) to always intend to do with is good for the health and well being of their offspring.

Socastee High School is saying goodbye to Chick-fil-A thanks to the nutritional guidelines for all schools as determined by Michelle Obama, who incidentally does not have a degree or even a certificate in nutrition. As a result of this change, not only will students not experience the tasty goodness that is Chick-fil-A, students in the Department of Special Education will be made to suffer the loss of their main fundraiser for field trips.
EAGNews reports that Socastee Principal Paul Browning said that the school will come into compliance with Michelle Obama’s guidelines, but it will amount to being able to sell pine bark and flavored water with extremely limited options for what students can purchase during the school day.
The director of food services for Horry County Schools, Laura Farmer, said, “We’re feeding the trash cans.” Unsatisfied with the new lunch offerings, students are throwing away the food and many have opted not to buy lunch at school, period. Both have resulted in a financial loss for the school district.
One former school board member, Wendy Day, told EAGNews, “I would tell her, mom to mom, to stay out of my child’s lunch box. She can feed her kids whatever she wants, but if I want to feed my kids a cupcake and a peanut butter sandwich, it isn’t her business. Here in fly over country, we like cupcakes.”

I love chik fila food, but seriously, the sodium is epic high. We don't sell cigars or budweiser to kids because it's dangerous. I'd be cool with low-sodium options, but seriously, a large meal is almost 100% of their daily rec'd... i'd prefer they sell the kids beer over 4000 mg per meal lol.

all of these foods from vendors who have to supply meat to such a large group will have high sodium foods. its pretty tough to find a vendor who will provide that type of volume of meat (unless it's meat filled with byproduct) without a lot of sodium. High salt = less chance of bacteria. Its a pick your poison type of deal.

That's why i'm always so miserable any time I go to just about any restaurant. they're ALL high sodium. for some reason i'm especially sensitive to high salt foods. I think its cuz my mom never used a lot and we never had it at the table as a kid.
like I said before, this food that they're giving the kids is all the same shit. its just less of it. its still crap food. its just a little bit of crap.

While campaigning in Des Moines, Iowa Friday for Democratic Senate candidate Bruce Braley, she referred to him multiple times as “Bailey” before she was corrected by someone shouting from the audience.
The flub came despite a huge array of signs in the hall where she was speaking, all spelling Braley’s name correctly

In speeches designed to fire up Democrats to vote in midterm elections, President Obama has at times described voters in his party as having a "congenital defect." Wednesday, First Lady Michelle Obama suggested the problem might just be that they're sleepy.
Mrs. Obama spoke at a rally in Philadelphia for the Democratic candidate for governor of Pennsylvania, Tom Wolf. In an effort to boost turnout in November, the first lady told the crowd that she runs across voters "who are like, no, I ain’t going to vote, or I couldn’t wake up." But she stressed that every vote matters:
So this is where -- when I find people who are like, no, I ain’t going to vote, or I couldn’t wake up, or it doesn’t matter, or why -- 20 votes decided who your Governor was in 2010, and it could decide who the Governor is this time.
The first lady wasn't finished with the sleepy-voter theme. Later in her remarks, she expanded on the idea:
You know your 20 people. You know the people in your neighborhood, in your church, in your family who aren’t focused. And you can’t leave anybody behind.
That nephew you know who sleeps -- get him up. Wake him up. (Laughter.) Young people, you all know folks who aren’t paying attention. Your classmates, your dorm mates -- wake them up, get them out.

Michelle Obama made yet another flub on the campaign trail Thursday when she apparently confused Colorado Democratic Sen. Mark Udall with his Republican rival.
Obama spoke in Denver Thursday as part of a campaign event for Udall, who is engaged in a heated battle with his Republican opponent, Rep. Cory Gardner.
She touted Udall’s Senate record in her speech, and called him a “fifth-generation Coloradan.”
“Mark understands what makes this state special,” she said.
The only problem? Udall is not a fifth-generation Coloradan. In fact, he was born in Arizona and his father, former Rep. Mo Udall, served as a congressman from that state for decades.
It is Gardner who is a fifth-generation Colorado resident, a fact he touts frequently on the campaign trail. His website states he has “family roots dating back to 1886” in the state.
