Title: The IronMan purse?
Post by: BayGBM on February 21, 2006, 08:32:22 AM
Is the IronMan still just $10,000?  If so, bragging rights or not, would you compete for that?

Now, that's more like it!  :D

I guess I had the $10K figure in my head from the 90s.  I remember when Flex W. was winning this show and it was always $10K.

The purse at the Ironman has always been a joke.   It has pretty much stayed the same since its inception in the 80s.  So with inflation it has decreaed substantially.

To me hitting a homerun is a hell of a lot easier than building a pro bodybuilder physique.  How many homeruns are hit a year in the world. Too many for me to buy a ticket.

Purse: A sum of money collected as a present or offered as a prize.

Kudos to John Bailik and the Ironman crew for increasing the 'purse' to the Ironman Pro Bodybuilding by $10,000 from last year. They listened and they did good.

240, why are you hassling Chick about his education. The guy is well spoken, smart and knows quite a lot about the sport, business and many other interests. It doesn't matter whether or not you went to a university or not. As long as you wish to learn something, that is the important thing. And if he disagrees with you, then we have a conversation about the differences.

But to all of you that complain about the show's purse, why don't you step up to the plate. Why don't you come and support the show, the expo. Yes, a number of you did, which was nice to see and meet, but many of you sat home and did nothing but complain.

Instead of praising the Ironman for raising the prize money, (even one compliment), you bring in baseball... come on already...

Generally I wouldn't take sides however I do have to say this.

240...you helped me out in my web banner.  You put together some great websites and you have a lot of technical knowledge.

However, you are a bit out of line in this thread.  You proceeded to insult his bodybuilding profession and career.  Thats not cool.  Bodybuilding is a lot harder than it looks and you'll know it if you ever step on stage after months of dieting and hardcore training.  I know because I'm 29 and I'm still a NPC JR Division Competitor having only moved from the novice divisions.  ( At least until April 22 hopefully  ;D).   And you have no idea about what goes on off-stage.  For example, sitting in a hotel room with 8 coats of Pro-Tan practically burning your skin and almost puking from the smell, posing, organizing a night routine, carbing up with @#@$##, etc.  Training with practically no carbs in the body and on an empty stomach, getting up at 3am in the morning to do more cardio and down protein.

Honestly, I wish you folks realize and appreciate the IFBB Pros that do come up here because they don't have to....

Now saying this, Chick when you said the following:

I'm not lecturing anyone...I advised him to look up the word "purse" and the meaning behind it.

I don't answer to you...you want to know my educational background...look it up yourself, you've obviously got spare time.

You should have expected the response you got, however in fairness I don't blame you.  Its really no-ones business.  I am aware of what schools you went to but I will not give out the information but honestly you don't have anything to hide.

What does it say if someone with a degree in anything would waste time Bodybuilding.  Never could figure that one out.  Why waste your time and effort to get degrees if you don't use them.  And with the education you have to have to get a degree you think you would learn that BB is not good for your body.  Especially to the degree every Pro takes it.  That's not education that is stupidity.  There are less than what 5 or so Pro Bodybuilders that actually make enough from BB speciafically to say they are making a living.  That is BB's whose prize money actually adds up to enough to support them for the year without any other income.  That sucks in percentages.  A 1st grader can see the stupidity it takes to rely on BB as an income.

Now with that, I am not stupid (well sometimes), I do know that BB leads to others form of income like sponsorships, edorsements, commercials etc.  That is great.  But in reality how many have taken advantage or pursued these avenues.  Again, a very small percentage.  BB's are very limited to what they can get involved with.  They are limited to the endorsements.  How many BB's make an actual living off something outside of BB.  When you become a pro you have chosen and have decided to dedicate your most of your life to BB.  But, what happens afterwards.  Other than the old timers, how many ex BB's have done anything worth while after BB.  Some of them were smart and started their own companies.  Great.  But, how many of them with degrees did something with that degree.

I am just saying why waste your time getting something you aren't going to use.  My brother spent how ever many years getting a mechanical drawing degree (notsure whats it is called).  He has been a cop for 25+ years now.    Never used it just got it.  What a waste.

Anyway, I have no degrees hated school and I have done just fine.  And I will do even better in the future.

Why this is of any interest is beyond me...but here it is for whatever it's worth...

I graduated from MCC in Rochester NY with a two year degree in criminal justice

I went to a private school for graphic design/ advertising (Empire state college) 1 year

I graduated from the police academy in 1987 and went on to the Sheriff's dept. as a Monroe county deputy for 2 years

Well I sure know allot attorney, lawyers, bankers and others that have.  One thing about my brother though is when you have the college and degrees and stuff like him it gives you a higher pay scale.

The first three professions you're talking about usually involve Graduate degrees.
Yes, college degrees do give you a higher pay scale but that's about all degree gives you.  Usually with just a Bachelor's you can find a job but it won't be in the sector that was your major.
