Title: Bodybuilders & Superman
Post by: BayGBM on February 22, 2006, 01:09:35 PM
This may require more thought than some of you care to put in, but why are so many bodybuilders fans of Superman?  Sure he was built in the comic books and in animation, but he is never really built in live TV shows or movies.  Comic fans always complain about that, but the fact is Superman’s strength came from earth’s lighter gravity--not from big muscles.

Here’s Italian bodybuilder, Constantino Galeazzo playing Clark Kent.

Since Superman came from Krypton or whatever planet which had a stronger gravitational field he would also have bigger muscles. Think about it GayMan.
If you could live in a planet that had 3x the gravity that we have on Earth you would be lifting 3 times as much. Everything from toothbrush to your dildo would weigh 3x as much. In fact gyms everywhere would cost less to for their owners. Less iron needed for the 45 lb plate. And if you do metric then lesser mass is needed to produce the same resistance.
You need not analyze cartoons. And if you want to nit pick why doesn't Supermans muscularity and strength dwindle once his muscles adapt to the lower gravity on earth. Astronauts suffer from muscle atrophy and strength losses after prolonged periods of weightlessness. (PS: I do know that weightlessness in a Space Shuttle is due to free fall that they experience much like you would be weightless if your descending elevator suddenly cut loose and went into a free fall not because there is no gravity...gravity still exists albeit it is not 9.81 m/s^2)

I take it as Superman being symbolic of superhuman strenth, the ultimate alpha male, etc. I don't think it has as much to do with the body as it does with the image.

I find Superman a bit boring.

There's nothing interesting about him. He's just a goody-goody.
I prefer Batman or Blade.

But i'm not a comic book geek. I just know them from movies.

Superman has always been drawn muscular in the comics, not to the extent of the Hulk, but he's always been bigger than say Spiderman or Batman. Superman is popular among bodybuilders because he is the most exposed. Superman is popular with the general public because everyone knows who he is. He is not only the most powerful, he is arguably the most popular fictional character of all time.

He was not only the first superhero in comics, but the first in Radio and Cartoons. Superman was one of the first superhereos to have a movie serial, and the first to have a feature film, which was like a pilot for what would be the first superhero television show.

Superman also had so many different comics featuring him, that if you read them as a kid, you were bound to be exposed to him. Lee Priest never really read the comics, but always watched the George Reeves' show, and loved the character from that.

Bodybuilding is about how you look, not how strong you are. But when we start out, every guy not only ants to get bigger, but stronger too. And who is stronger than Superman?

And as for his powers, originally Superman had tremendous strength, his skin could not be penetrated by a bursting shell, and could leap great lenghts and heights. This was all attributed to the fact of Earth's lighter gravity than Krypton's, by his creaters Jerry Siegal and Joe Shuster. When Superman started to develop all the vision and eyesight powers, these were due to the Earth's yellow sun .
So everyone is right to an extent.

Not true - he would have whatever 'normal' physiology was there, and it would be relative only to his own planet, not to ours.

Bay,

I'm dissapointed in you. Most of Superman's strength had to be psychic. Otherwise he couldn't lift buildings, planes, boats, etc... Why? you ask. Even it you could lift 100tons most objects weighing that much could never support their own weight over the area Superman was grabbing them. Buildings and such would fall apart under their own weight no matter how strong he was.

This problem with Superman’s strength has been discussed many many times in a lot of Superman forums online.  Prior to that it was discussed in letters to the editor of Superman comics.

The definitive answer is Superman’s strength is not psychic; we simply have to accept his lifting large objects (that should collapse under their own weight) as possible in the world of comix.  :-\

btw, this is what Constantino Galeazzo looks like when he's not dressed like Clark.

Or struggle with the weight of a plane and then fly a mass the size of Texas into outer space even though it was lined with kryptonite? I still liked it, though.

I think that a lot of it has to do with the power envolved. Men lift weight to become strong, and superman is obviously the strongest possible. Basically, it's a worship of that which all men want to be: a superman in strengh, who looks just as strong as he is.

Superman’s strength came from earth’s lighter gravity--not from big muscles.

But if he came from a planet with a stronger gravity, he would need bigger muscles. This is simple deductive logic. The strengh of a muscle is proportional to it's cross sectional area. Unless his muscles were capable of exerting more strengh per unit of area, then Superman's enhanced musculature would be the norm in his planet.
