Eight Body Weight Classes for Men and Six Body Weight Classes For Women

This is an “Old school”, classic, raw benchpress competition. NO benchpress super shirts allowed. Elbow sleeves/wraps are also illegal. Wrist wraps, chalk (hands) and weight lifting belts are acceptable. There will be a “Start”, “Press” and a “Rack” command. The bencher’s butt and shoulders must remain in contact with the bench pad at all times. The heels of the foot can be up or down, but the feet cannot slide around on the floor. Athletes can get a hand off out of the rack, but the “Start” command won’t be given until the hand off person has let go of the barbell and moved out of the way of the head judge. The bar must come to a full stop on the chest, before the head judge will issue the “Press” command, but an extended pause is NOT required. The “Rack” command will be given once the bencher’s arms are fully locked out at the conclusion of the lift. Each competitor will get 3 max bench attempts. Safety spotters will be in place. This contest will not be drug tested. The weigh ins will occur 2 hours before the lifting begins on stage. No one wearing any brand of “Competition tan color” will be allowed in the warm up area or on the benchpress stage. These tanning creams and sprays coat the barbells and benches and they are a safety hazard in addition to having the potential of making a mess of the competition grade, benchpress equipment.

Pretty cool event...

I agree Ron and would be pumped to go if I lived in the area.
Reminds me of the old AAU  meets that included a strength or lifting event along with the bodybuilding contest.
Cool that it's raw lifting without those absurd modern bench shirts.

It seems silly that anyone would try to insult Sean K, Stan E or make fun of this event?

That's Joe Luther. He's not a bodybuilder. But he did raw bench 420 pounds at 165 pounds of body weight at The 2006 Olympia Expo.

Thanks Howard. I've been involved with organizing and running these classic powerlifting / power benching comps since 2001. So my skin's pretty thick at this point. Getting smart ass remarks from guys who were in grade school, when I began my career, doesn't affect me too much, ha! They'll come around once they see how much fun our shows are and how nice it is to finally be rid of the goofy bench shirts and squat suits (14 years ago our sport was a mess.) And we're hoping that the bodybuilding community will appreciate getting to compete on the bench without having to take on the benchpress specialists. Plus the question "Who's the strongest bodybuilder in the community" is an interesting one to me and hopefully to others as well.

Howard, what were you able to bench in your younger days? You look like you could have thrown some heavy steel around in this picture...

most getbiggers carry a .45 everywhere we go.   ;D

Getting back to topic...
Stan's the man... he's been consistently crushing weights at top level for over a decade now.  Age can't touch him!

I wish more companies did the crowd-involvement thing like this.

Back in my early days of bodybuilding in the eighties in South Florida. Used to be bench press contests in all of the local gyms. Great times.
