Holyfield has more heart than any heavyweight I've seen. He had the best conditioning, more heart and an ability to recover from punches better than any heavyweight of that time.  Bowe has his number though. I would have loved to have seen Bowe/Lewis.  I think Bowe would have won.  Even though he ducked him. I think Tyson would have beaten Bowe though.

Bowe beat Tyson?!  ::) Lewis & Holyfield beat a declining Tyson, infact Lewis beat a Tyson that should have retired long before that bout.

Prime for prime i would say Tyson, Lewis, Bowe, Holyfield.

Just my opinion.

Both Lewis and Holyfield are older than Tyson. So why do you give a pass to a "declining Tyson"? Its not like these guys were 10 years younger than Tyson.

Mike was an exciting fighter, but he usually seemed to struggle against elite competition.

Tyson is the ultimate "what if" fighter. What if his trainer/mentor didn't die? What if he didn't go to prison? Unfortunately, all we can go by is his results in the ring.

What about Riddick Bowe?  His only loss was to Holyfield in their 2nd fight by decision.  BUT, he never fought Tyson or Lewis.  He's the only guy that can decisively beat a young Holyfield. BTW, no doubt in my mind Holyfield was using PEDs at some point.

Age isnt always a factor, there are far too many examples in sports that proves that. In boxing, ill use Hopkins. Just because hes older doesnt mean he isnt better. Linford Christie at 35 / 36 was blowing away the worlds best sprinters, Paolo Maldini approaching 40 was still one of the best defenders in the world at football.

All im saying is Tyson's prime lasted 2-3 years in his early 20's before he went into an evident decline, and yes he is the greatest "what if" in boxing.

As i said, its just my opinion. Doesnt mean you have to agree or disagree and it doesnt mean its right or wrong.

I will be honest, I never knew Bowes record was this good (43-1). They always portray Bowe as the huge underdog that beat Tyson, but not as a fantastic former champion in his own right.

I would actually have to put Tyson last amongst this group of fighters.

You're thinking Buster Douglas.  He lost to Holyfield. Bowe and Tyson never fought.

cant argue with that! But when you consider the external factors coming into the fight he was bound to lose to someone very soon during that period. His head just wasnt where it needed to be for that level.

BTW its worth pointing out that whilst Douglas was a HUGE underdog he was actually a very able, very decent boxer. Was ahead in the Tucker fight until he got caught. If only Bruno hadnt taken that punch from Lewis......

It's a bit of Tyson fan boy in me. I think if we'd have seen a fresh, younger Tyson, those would've been much better fights. Also, on crossover opponents they both had, I think Tyson had more decisive victories.

Good post.

It's not a good post , it's an ignorant , retarded , Shizzo  post.

Chronological age  and boxing age are  two completely different matters , boxers peak at different ages , because  fighting style ,weight classes, amount of fights........  etc .  heavyweights usually have  their peak/prime  in their 30's, Tyson peaked in his early 20's.

Mike Tyson wasn't the ultimate ''what if'' fighter , he was  the  youngest HW World Champion , first heavyweight to own all three major belts at the same time, at the same age Lennox was still in the amateurs.

Flashes of lightning aren't as impressive as long, sustained excellence. Those guys might not have been as explosive, powerful, or flashy as Tyson, but they proved that they were the better fighters. Tyson didn't have the will to succeed for the majority of his career. That has to count against him at some point.

Lennox Lewis: At his best he beats the other fighters on this list, he was one of the most technically sound big men in boxing and his tremendous power was surpassed only by his boxing IQ (granted he has had a few mental lapses in the past)

Evander Holyfield: He is a top ten all time great at heavyweight and his legacy speaks for itself. The only reason I put Lennox above him is because I feel Lennox would have won most match ups between them

Mike Tyson: Hate him or love him there was a time Tyson dominated the HW with an iron fist and no one came close to touching him. His skills gradually deteriorated after he let Rooney go and his bad lifestyle and dumb choices eventually brought him down. However in his prime he dominated heavyweight boxing in a way that not many fighters can.

Riddick Bowe: Hard to rate. In my mind he wasted his potential, he could have been an all time top 5 great but he lacked the mental fortitude to go that far. I think at his beast he could give any other heavyweight a run for his money but he did not dominate his division like the previous three did even though he displayed great brilliance the ring.

It was probably D'Amato's death that hurt more. He was Tyson's mentor and father figure. Seemed to lose his edge a bit after that.

Tyson at his very best beats all of them.

Then Lewis Bowe holyfield.

Lewis would have beaten Tyson easily later on, Bowe avoided him and the Holyfield fight was just ugly, 9 times out of  10 he wins that fight easily I still think the fix was in for that draw.

What about Riddick Bowe?  he never fought Tyson or Lewis.
he fought Lewis at the Olympics & got destroyed. Wasn't a knockout but Lewis was several levels about Bowe. That's why Bowe threw the belt in the garbage instead of taking the Lewis mandatory.

I think Tyson style beats Bowe. Bowe's style beat Holyfield. Holyfield's style beat Tyson. Lewis beat Bowed easily. I think Tyson & Holyfield in their prime beat Lewis.

What's with you guys ranking Tyson over Holyfield.  Watch this fight.  Tyson get his ass handed to him.

Holyfield won the fight by tying up Tyson every time he got close.

Here's the fight:

Tyson - jab jab hook or leading left hook

Holyfield - dives in for a hug, stoping Tyson offense.

Holyfield realized he couldn't outslug Tyson and measure chin to chin so he just wore him down. Look at round two; Holyfield decides to stand and trade punches and ends up giving in and going in for a lean.

Tyson peaked early in his career while Lewis peak in his latter years. FFS, Tyson went on to lose to Danny Williams and Kevin McBride shortly afterwards. :-\

I think Lewis had the best career overall out of the four but he benefitted from the fact that the other three were on the decline by the time he started to hit his prime.
Tyson was the most talented of the bunch while Holyfield had the greatest wins.
Bowe was too inconsistent but was superb when on form.

dont know what fight you were watching. holyfield took it to tyson and took the big hits. let me ask you- would you let a small man inside under your chin?- and if you were tyson, would you stay outside?

you know those big gloves get all caught up dont you?

tyson took leading with the head to a new level. watch all of his fights and be objective, not a fan boy- and watch what he does differently to others. if someone leads with their iron head under your chin are you going to just give him space so he can upper cut you out the ring?!..

all it needed was a boxer with skill, a hard jaw and some strength- and willing to use the tyson approach, and tyson ran scared. as soon as tyson lost, he lost again and again. those others lost and then came back.

tyson doesnt feature in the best. even the pro boxing writers dont have him ranking in the top heap.

Holyfield beat Tyson twice and not an old Tyson.

Not so much having to do with age but rather how both evolve as boxers. Holyfield progressed and improved and Tyson kept declining. If you look at Tyson's early fights compared to his later fights his style completely changed. He was fighting more like a traditional boxer than when he was under Cus D'Amato. D'Amato's peek-a-boo style was tailer made for Tyson. All that bobbing and weavingk, pressing forward, throwing those upper cuts and hooks. Once Cus died, and then Kevin Rooney and the original crew got cut Tyson just slowly got worse and worse both as a boxer and as a human being. Tyson was a child and he so needed someone like D'Amato in his life.

I think when people talk of Tyson they remember that short period when he was just coming up and destroying everyone. They want to remember what was and could have been. I believe Tyson could have been great and WOULD have been better than Holyfield and others in his area.

But he wasn't. Blame it on Don King. Blame it on all his yes men on the Tyson dole. Blame it on the death of D'Amato. Whatever. What could have been never was. But so many still want to believe and imagine. I do, too.

Shame Vitali has a loss to Lennox, despite his total superiority.

For me, at their very best:

Tyson(86-88)
Lewis
Bowe
Holyfield

You could put Holyfield ahead of Bowe, as his temperament was more sound and technically he was a better boxer. But Bowe, despite always being pretty easy to hit, was a pretty spectacular puncher in his prime, both on the outside and-surprisingly for a big man-on  the inside.

I would take the best version of Holyfield over the best version of Tyson in a 15 round fight, but give Tyson the edge in a 12 round fight.

This is Tyson sparring at 17 with a much more experience, bigger and taller full grown adult. Look at Tyson's head and body movement. The way he just kept coming at you bobbing and weaving, slipping those punches so he can use both hands to land those body shots, hooks and upper cuts. It's beautiful and looks unstoppable. Nobody in the HW division were fighting like that. And he's just a kid here though in two years he will be champ. I believe that Tyson at 17 would have beaten Tyson at 30. There just didn't seem anyone that could or would have been willing to train Tyson in this Peek-a-Boo style that I think was made famous by Floyd Patterson though I'm just guessing because Flyd was also under D'Amato.

BTW, this is an interesting documentary (sort of) of Cus and his gym and the environment he created for his boxers. It's incorrectly title as a Tyson/D'Amato documentary. It's not about Tyson but it does show him while he was still a nobody at 16 yo living with Cus and other fighters Cus took in and training in his gym. There's is a short amateur fight with Tyson but it's not about Tyson so only the hard core boxing and D'Amato fans will find this interesting.

Also, I think it gives you a different perspective onTeddy Atlas whom I believe was treated unfairly by D'Amato. You can see Atlas was a good dude and always eager to help aspiring fighters and always made time for them. What would you do if someone like Tyson made an overly aggressive play on your teenage niece? Pull a gun and tell Tyson that the next time you try something like that there's a hollow tip in here with your name on it.

It starts off kind of weird.

I think Lewis had the best career overall out of the four but he benefitted from the fact that the other three were on the decline by the time he started to hit his prime.
Tyson was the most talented of the bunch while Holyfield had the greatest wins.
Bowe was too inconsistent but was superb when on form.
Therefore he was not the better fighter then.

Shouldnt the guy who can keep his skills longer, be considered the better fighter?

Holyfield is the clear number 1.

Then it's:

Tyson
Bowe
Lewis

Lewis beat Tyson but he had some bad losses in there too. Bowe would be 2 if he fought Tyson or Lewis.

Here's a better list though:

Who is better:

Lenonard
Hagler
Hearns
Duran

How I miss Wide World of Sports.

Marvin Hagler: Tough as they come. Ray Leonard fought him like a coward running and soft punches in bunches. Hagler was the aggressor in that fight from beginning to end.

Roberto Duran: His fight history says it all. He has a couple of notable losses but from what I know from people that knew him he partied way to hard at the top of his fame.

Sugar Ray Leonard: He was outstanding fighter for the ages. I do give him credit even though I hated his defensive style.

Hit man Hearns: Was the hardest puncher of the above listed. He just left himself wide open. It was incredible watching him fight. Hearns vs Hagler might be the greatest fight of all time.

This is when boxing was outstanding. Four guys in the same class that will go down in the hall of fame for being the best.

Mike Tyson in his prime before prescription drugs and alcohol got to him.
Lennox Lewis: Ducked no one and had everything - EVERYTHING!? DIDNT HAVE A FUCKIN CHIN!!!!!
Riddick Bowe: Lazy fighter but rose to the occasion when pressed.
Evander Holyfield: Had a lot of heart for a smaller fighter.

Riddick Bowe
Lennox Lewis

they all suck

holyfield: a blown up lightheavy with a good chin. he relied alot on his athleticism and when it left you seen what kind of fighter he really was a forward walking boxer. he is lucky he went this far at his age if he was in any other era he would of been blasted out of the ring by many heavyweights.

tyson: for a very well educated boxer he was very dumb. a mid range fighter with no inside punching skills unless his opponent stood there like
a punching bag. larry holmes exposed this fraud in the beginning and tyson was lucky he came off a 3 year layoff with 6 weeks to prepare for him. that KO of holmes doesnt mean shit. fighting cans your entire career doesnt make you great just ask joe louis  ;)   and to top it all off he had no HEART and without HEART you dont last in the heavyweight game. once again any other era this t rex would be blasted out of the ring by most heavyweights

bowe: good chin and for a big guy could fight on the inside cant really do much besides the over hand right which was neutralized twice by straight punching of galota and was very lucky he is crazy and low blowed him 100 times . no notable wins in his career. went to hell and back with holyfield 3 times which really gives more credit to evander than bowe. for an eddie futch fighter he is arguably the worst heavyweight he ever trained who became champion.

lewis: average chin and good power. used his reach well but was exposed when he fought mercer when he was flustered alot by him walking lewis down and not being able to put him away. when he fought oliver mc call his trainers knew lewis loves the jab and straight which was his bread and butter oliver got around those 2 punches and KO his ass. if you can get around those 2 punches and with good power u can put him away everytime and in anyother era they would of capitalized on it greatly

If you look at Boxing.com's all time top 10 HW's, Tyson is 10th & Lewis 4th. Holyfield is 11th. Its always subjective no matter what anyone says. Some experts will look at certain fighter stats and base their decisions on them whereas others will base their opinion on another series of stats.

Im no Bert Sugar, i grew up in the Tyson era so thats whats prominent to me. His style, his speed, his skills, his brute power and relentness pursuit of a violent stoppage are a better combination than anything ive seen after. What came before is up for debate, nobody will ever know how Marciano, Ali, Liston, Johnson etc would have matched up.

Its always subjective.

Tyson fought in an era of no serious competition
Look at Ali, Frazier, Norton, Holmes, Foreman
That was an ear of greatness.

Can you imagine what Ali would have done verbally to Tyson leading up to a fight?
Tyson would have been convinced he had lost before he got in the ring.

As for the Welter/Middleweight era
If Hearns had a chin he would have been the best by far, his power and accuracy was unmatched, everytime he lost was because he got caught early or late when gassed.

I honestly believe Mayweather would have struggled with a prime Herol Graham (154 - 160), might have even lost. Bombers main issue was his chin (Floyd isnt known as a power puncher) and his fight prep was never ideal but his skill was unbelievable. People say Floyd dodged prime guys but if you still look at the list hes beaten, its ridiculously impressive.

Oh, why didn't you say so. He clinched with Larry Holmes and didn't do shit. Well, that settles it.

How about all of Tyson's virtually all of knockouts came from the inside. All his bobbing and weaving was so he could get to the inside to land those upper cuts, hooks and body shots.

He was shorter than everybody. Getting inside was the only way he was going to hit anybody. But he stopped fighting like that later in his career. Tyson's prime lasted only a few years. As I said, after Cus died and the original crew were gone so was Tyson's fighting skills. Tyson in many ways still had the mind of a child and needed the guidance Cus and company provided. He never recovered after he got out of jail.

And I hope you realize when you say Tyson had no inside punching skills that his strength was fighting from the outside. A boxer who was known for his ruthless aggressive style and always pressed forward, bobbing and weaving, firing hooks and upper cuts.

Does this look like a guy who fought from the outside which implies and more defensive counter striker? Pay special attention to 8:20 where he "couldn't do shit" to Larry Holmes from the inside.

he obviously has to press to get into range he is always giving up 10inches in reach he is a mid range fighter and thats it sure he has all the punches in the books, speed, power ect. thats why i said very educated boxer but dumb cus taught him everything and he still remembers it till this day but never used it.

larry holmes gassed by that point thats why i brought up holmes preparation for the fight. holmes was hit with an atom bomb by earnie fucking shavers the guy ali said is the hardest puncher he ever faced and he still got up. if tyson gave holmes proper prep time he wouldnt of been KOd.

If Floyd was Anderson Silva then Guillermo is Jose Aldo.

Prime Foreman puts a beating on Tyson 9 times out of ten. Foreman wouldn't be phased too bad by Tyson's punching power, he was in there with lots of heavy punchers. Also, he had better later round experience. And another key thing is that D'amato never wanted Tyson in with a fighter of Foreman's class and style according to folks in Tyson's camp, and that would've plagued Tyson mentally tremendously.

Riddick Bowe doesn't belong in the same sentence with these guys.  One night in his career, he put it all together and beat Evander Holyfield.  That was it.  He lost the rematch and only won the trilogy because
Evander had the "mystery condition" going on.  He was basically knocked down and almost out in the third fight and Evander really never threw another punch after that.  Not an impressive performance at all.  Two brutal ass beatings at the hands of Andrew Golota.  In my opinion the most overrated heavyweight in a long, long time.

But to play the game, here goes.

Lewis
Holyfield
Tyson
Bowe

The 90's had some decent if not exiting heavyweights to go along with these guys.  Most of whom Bowe ducked or didn't fight for whatever reason.

Moorer
Mercer
Foreman
Holmes (had a good run in the early 90's)
Morrison
Golota
Rahman
David Tua
John Ruiz
Chris Byrd
Klitchko Bros at the tail end of the 90's
Ike Ibeabuchi (who knows what could have been?)

Agree, Tyson never fought anyone close to a young Foreman. Don't know if he would knock him out in the first round though. Tyson could move in the ring,he was pretty good on his feet, and his head was always moving. Tyson also had very quick hands for a heavyweight.

The only two times he showed up committed were the 1st Holyfield fight and the second Golota fight.  DQ aside, he was beaten like a drum in the 2nd Golota fight.  Same could be said of Buster Douglass, if only
he would have always shown up commited, he would have been great.  Maybe, but he never did it more than once.

My point stands, Riddick Bowe should not be in the Hall of Fame.
