Title: Reverse Push Up: Most underutilized exercise?
Post by: Thin Lizzy on April 19, 2015, 06:39:35 AM
I always thought this exercise made sense, as it virtually eliminates the lower back risk inherent in bent rows, but, ironically it's hard to find the right apparatus to perform it. Some exercise equipment was recently installed in a park near me. A bar which is meant for stretching worked perfectly for reverses. I did 4x12 and had the right kind of soreness in my lats the next day. Thumbs up.

I do these every back workout with rings. You can put you feet up on a box for different angles and wear a weighted vest for resistance. The trick is to control the eccentric/concentric and pause at the top. Mind/muscle connection is key. Also, you can do scapular retractions at the end for more burn.

Also: actual training-related thread reported.

Um, that's not exercise equipment.  It's a depot to connect bicycles with less fortunate urban youth.

Popular in powerlifting circles with the larger lifters, they're known as "fat man pull ups". It's useful, especially when used with rope handles or rings, etc....

Something like 'horizontal pull up' sounds more logical to me.

This.

I see "reverse push ups" more as just a warm up or something done by people who aren't strong enough yet to do regular pull ups.

I like your term, it beats "inverted row", which is the fancy term some have named it.

Pull ups would actually be reverse military presses. ;)

I do pulls ups, too. I find they hit mainly the outer part of the back. To get the middle back, you need some kind of rowing movement. It's the difference between pulling your elbows down and pulling them back.

The 'military press' is another questionable name. The name 'front press' indicates the form directly.

I have heard them called inverted rows and body rows. I always felt they were gold when I had my feet elevated so the body is more horizontal to the floor. I use a barbell in a rack then put my heels on a bench. It's a staple  with body weight exercisers.

Take that smith machine bar and lower it some. Put your heels on a bench. Now you have a real body weight row. Doing it the way the video shows makes it too easy.

hard to find the right apparatus? You just haven't been looking in the right place. You can find these for $50-$80.

overhead press to the front would be more correct. front press would be what we know as the bench press.

hence, "military press" is quite ok as a description.

What about a "Turkish getup?"

I do those (no homo) and I am in no way wearing Muslim clothing.

I liked to do those back in the beginning when I was not able to do proper pull ups but I might give it a go once again.

Great exercise.

We started doing them in the smith machine years ago.  Nobody used to ever do them back in the day from what i remember.

I would adjust that to 'overhead front press', but OK, I get what you mean. 'Bench press' sounds to generic, adding 'flat', 'incline' or 'decline' & 'barbell/dumbbell/machine' is more precise.

'military press' says nothing about the direction of the movement.

Originally the military press had to be done in competition with heels together and militarily completely upright.
