The one photo of Arnold where his chest looks unnaturally huge makes me wonder if this fellow is doing more than just colorizing these photos. Personally, I prefer black and white photos, but this is just a matter of taste.
-
i think he is just colorizing what people give him in terms of pics. they may or may not have been altered before hand...
-
coloring adds a different perspective to old pics...

If you had told me somebody was trying/planning to do this, I would have very simply dismissed it as an unnecessary "desicration" to bodybuilding history.
However, after seeing these photos, I am THOROUGHLY IMPRESSED and quite happy to see the results!!

Great photographs of great physiques. My preferred medium for this is the original B&W but these are nice enough with a somewhat "aged patina" to them.

Never seen that pic before.
-
Doubt that he did, but Arnold looks like he had calf implants, sitting on that bench. Also, from that angle, really higher calves than recalling to ever see before on him. I'm probably wrong..just saying.
There had been rumors (I had been told by older BB'ers) that Arnold did go under the knife for calves. Anyone know if he did, or didn't.
Never the less, Arnold was on top of his game when those picture were taken.

arnold was said to have left the scene for a while when he came back he had much improved calves which he attributed to the reg park system of overloaded calf work??????? a now deceased top bodybuilder stated that not only did arnold have calf implants but he had some chest work done as welll.... who knows for sure.

LOL...
Was this deceased top bodybuilder also a bitter bodybuilder? :)
My buddies and I all heard the calf implant rumors while growing up. Personally, I can believe it since Arnold's calves seem to have retained very good size and shape well into his advanced years. I'm not claiming to know anything, though. It's just pure conjecture on my part.

Interesting pic of Sandow. Probably what the average man would want to look like.
Sandow did a one arm bent press around 300lbs officially Authur Saxon did a unofficial bent press above 400lbs around the same time. No drugs, but old time strongmen drank a lot of beer, been told.

Heard a few good thing about an old timer named Malcolm Brenner (think that's the name) who hung around the original muscle beach. Also a guy named Bud Counts with pretty good guns for that time. Any pictures?

malcom brenner was an aau mr america contender from the late 40's to early 50's placing 2 nd twice. he won mr muscle beach somewhere between that time.

Thanks Funk51. You data base must be beyond belief.
Bud Counts, impressive indeed. Brenner, more of a natural flow to his body. Today's guy's look like comic book characters...which seems to be what the BB'ing fans want. Oh Well.

I think that injury has occurred in late 1973 or early 1974. In 1973 at the Mr International was OK, but in only the few images with him from 1974, Sergio already had the problem.

The photo of Larry Scott with Freddie Ortiz will ALWAYS remain my favorite "buddy pic" in the world of bb, but this one gives it a run for it's money.
I don't even recall ever seeing the original.
Serge catches heat on here about only looking good in one or two poses, but I couldn't care less about the detractors. This photo is about as bad-ass as you can get in the classic genre!!!

Probably so they wouldn't have to listen to Gironda bitch at them!
;D
i heard that too, as vince's didn't have squat racks and abhorred the regular barbell squat. he was more into hack squats and sissy squats and such.

40 years ago, the leg press I used was not like the ones I use today.

Believe it or not, my aunt used to do these laying on the living room floor. Although she didn't use a lot of weight, I don't recall how she would place the bar on her feet.

to ignore the back squat is a mistake. A terrible mistake. Park showed the type of size gained with the squat. manly power & mass.

doing good , he doesn't come on here much anymore... his weight leveled off at 160 lbs and he's been healthy for 6 years now. he trains 4 times a week.

I have a vertical leg press machine in my garage, which I got cheap on craigslist. I love it!
As for Vince Gironda and squats (and leg pressing)... he seemed to strongly favor a more wire-y, compact type of physique rather than the thicker builds associated with back squats, such as Reg Park and Bill Pearl. Even John Grimek, whose example first inspired Gironda in the field of bodybuilding, used the squat as a foundation of his routine. And of course, as part of the Hoffman/York crew, Grimek was also known as an Olympic lifter; whereas Gironda was against Olympic lifts for bodybuilders.
Reading through a lot of Gironda's books and articles, I have noticed that Gironda would strongly recommend against back squats except in very rare cases; he thought they developed the glutes too much and widened the hip structure. However, he seemed to remain absolutely silent when it came to specific examples of bodybuilders who used heavy back squats in their routines, such as the aforementioned Pearl, Park and Grimek.

Vince was sort of a wiry looking fellow. Guess he was able to accept that.

Funk is a quality poster.
I've often wondered what many of these photos would look like in color.
And, while it's wonderful to see them in this alternate condition, I find that I prefer the B&W versions of most.
I don't know if it's simply that I'm used to seeing them that way, or do they "lose something" when altered?

i agree they do lose something in their transformation into color and the quality of the coloration depends on the original b and w pic.

I don't know if its the quality so much as the "mystique."

agreed at the time the below pic was labelled as the greatest exercise photo ever..color won't have had the same impact..esp considering the year..

And I thought it was just Me
either being nostalgic or the rose tinted glasses effect
Much prefer them in their original Black & White
Though its great to see them in colour
Maybe posting the original & the colour one side by side
for comparison.

Brad Harris was someone that I always listened to when he talked about training. He trained along side bodybuilding royalty but never competed. He was just someone that loved to train. He also was very dedicated to cardio. One article I have he said he doesn't train his legs with weights. I found that unusual. He said he trains his legs with running and biking. He like all of us changed his routine from time to time but he wrote he generally used three exercises a body part for three sets of 12.

I think I've said it before, but, what the hell...
I find it interesting as hell to see colorized versions of these vintage photos we all grew up viewing countless times.
HOWEVER...
I think I will ALWAYS PREFER the original b&w versions for reasons I cannot explain.

If you have to take the drugs, I suppose it's safe to say that one could do far worse than to choose a physique such as Pearl's to emulate. I say this because I recall where Bill admitted to having used steroids, albeit "sparingly".
I will be going to Oregon in a couple of months to visit my older brother who lives not far from Bill. There is a small restaurant that Pearl likes to frequent so perhaps I can finally meet him. Decades ago I used to train at Stern's and the many photographs of Pearl, Reeves and more were very inspirational.
