No - we dropped the second bomb because the Japs thought that we only had one. After the second they weren't sure how many more we had.

I'm just saying it's a commonly held belief that the Japs would never have surrendered unless we nuked them, and most people who hold this belief have never heard that they were trying to negotiate terms of their surrender prior to atomic bombing.
Whether or not their attempts to surrender were 'good enough' is another question. I don't really feel like discussing it either, but people should probably research it and draw their own conclusion. It's an important question because if we did nuke, twice, the non-combatant population of an enemy who was already defeated and trying to surrender, just to make a point to Russia, twice, then that would be right up at the top of the Two Most Evil Atrocities Ever list. Instead of the We Had No Choice & It Saved Lives list, which is the much more popular and palatable take on it.

While indeed there were some overtures of desire for negotiation from the Empire of Japan, the US wanted an "Unconditional Tapout". MacArthur talked Washington into one "condition"...let them keep the Emperor. It was feared that an invasion would have almost a million US casualties.

I have talked with many German WWII veterans and in the final months of the war there was a saying going around the German Troops, “Um Christi willen Hingabe an die amis!”…(for Christ’s sake, surrender to the Yanks!)
The United States was not as angry in Germany as the Europeans because:
- The US Mainland was untouched.
- The US Army had many soldiers from Milwaukee, Nebraska, Texas, New York City who had parents/grandparents/relatives from Germany/Austria and for whom the primary language in the household was German. (The Supreme Allied Commander was a guy named “Eisenhower”)
- And of course, they knew that Germany would be an important ally in the future. They knew that they had to let all that had happened up to then be considered “water under the bridge.”

Than you have other Christian churches that reject the modern state of Israel having any links to the biblical state and believe that any covenant that God had with the Jews was broken when the Jews failed to recognize Christ as the Messiah.
Even among Jews its complex. Some religious Jews view Israel as important due to their historical links to the land and see it as the land that God gave to them - their spiritual homeland. Some orthodox Jews however oppose the Israeli state because they believe that a Jewish state should only be built once the Messiah comes. Up until then, the Jews have to wander the planet without a homeland (according to the Torah).

You can walk, shop, vote, get free health and schooling, have clean water, sewage disposal, jobs, and raise you kids right along with the Jews. At prayer time in Jerusalem the call to pray is loud and clear from the Mosques. Sure there are some Jewish zealots and radical Moslems here and there. Very minor irritation. We have that in the USA.

I tend to take a contrarian's opposite view that the world is more stable with an über powerful country at the top that's willing to "do what it takes" to keep order.

Israel would wipe out a significant amount of it's own population if it dropped the bomb. Palestine doesn't exactly cover a large area.
It's not happening anyway so there's little point discussing it. If not physical suicide, it would be political suicide.
I doubt we'll see another nuclear bomb being used anytime soon. Maybe not for another two or three generations.

They can be a good thing as their mere existence can cause two nations who would of otherwise fought, to remain just rivals. Nobody wants a nuclear war.
In that sense they can be a peace maker.
