just not practical when you weigh so much. My left shoulder wants nothing to do with them...

^^
I've done it if I'm taking a swim after my workout...

I've gotten too good at them, they bore my lats. I have to heap on the extra weight or do weird tempos or that "typewriter" thing or use rings. Anything but the standard.
I still love them even though they aren't doing fuck-all any more. On back day, I will do 100 or more over 8 or so sets. I just like to be able to do them.

I do 4 sets 2 wide 2 inner sets 15 to warm up before rows ect...

Started doing them again after I did an obstacle course race and they had two eight foot walls with no toe holds to help climb.
...I struggled mightily :-[

I've recently incorporated rope pulls using the Prowler stacked with weight. I use my "battle rope" ( ::)) and tie it off to the Prowler. Take a strong stance and hand-over-hand pull it to me. Then I run with the rope to the other side of the driveway and repeat.
Haven't done one of those mudder things (I am terrified of my achilles), but I like to train like I am getting ready for one.

PATHETIC !! :(

dips and pull ups are a mainstay for me, i find it worrying that a pro may struggle to do these because they weigh too much,
bodybuilding used to be exactly that, building a superior body in terms of muscle/symmetry/aesthetics and athleticism.
now it's strictly all about conditioned mass at all costs even if it's intramuscular fat - as long as it plumps up the muscle, doesn't matter so much what it is i.e. IM fat storage, huge excess of glycogen capacity (slin, GDA's, peps)
something like this is probably a distant memory for most top pro's!
-
still the likes of Rhoden, Cedric, Dex etc but for every one of them there's another Ramy, Compton, Morel, who keep it to mass at all costs because they take it in that direction and get rewarded for it.
can't remember the last Troy Alves or Dex we saw making an impact on the O stage. only Rhoden in recent times.

Decent pull-ups are the best lat builders for beginners and intermediates.
-

You could just do one for the fun of it and run at your own pace so you don't stress your achilles.
I run with friends so we go as fast as our slowest person.
-
I have always done it least 4 sets of 20 wide grip chins. From when I started training to when I weighed 220. Great overall exercise for lats.
-
A great combo courtesy of John Meadows, the anabolic gopher:
Superset Rack Pulls (6-8 rep range) with Wide Grip Chin Ups (8-10)

You have no clue

Chins> lat pulldowns.

There are absolutes in weight training. What works for one won't do fuck-all for someone else. Making sweeping statements like "pull-ups don't work" is just ignorant.
"Pull-ups don't work for me" is better

The thing is that most guys aren't strong enough to perform wide grip pull ups correctly (yes, me included so I perform the machine assisted version). I believe that anyone can built a decent back once they're able to master pull ups.
