So fucking narrow.

he is one lazy fucker.

Boring. Uninspiring. Id rather watch Jay train than Phil.
-
Gonna send this link to my grams so she can share this vid with her sit n fit class at the senior center.

Guy's juice-jacked to all hell, but his "training" is nothing that deviates from what a majority of exercisers do at any local health centre, anywhere in the world.
Athletes train. What we see here is not training. Phil goes to the gym and does workouts.
-
I tried, but could not make it past 4ish min. Just watching him train puts me in sleep mode. Not inspiring at all.
-
arnolds 20 second videos at nearly 70 years old preacher curling or hitting side chests with lou are more inspiring

Training smart > Training hard :)
Make fun of Phil for using the hammer strength, but I bet the guy won't be a worn out train wreck and invalid in his Mid 40s, but rather travelling the world and enjoying his wealth and financial independence 8)

Loathe Philly as a Olympian, but I remember a video w/ Jay and himself talking about not lifting heavy once they reached "muscle maturity" so that they could have longevity and health later on in life.
That being said... It looks like he doesn't even enjoy training, like it is a chore for him, and that's the shit I hate the most about him. All about the haters, not about making himself better.

damm hench you got that right i love to watch arnold train

BINGO!
No passion, whatsoever.

Do you enjoy your work? Do you come to work with an ear to ear smile everyday? (in case you even have a job)

Actually, yes. But I don't expect you to believe me. No big thing.
And with pro bodybuilding, let's be real, these dudes never come at it in the same way the average person approaches a real career. It's a hobby that occasionally morphs into something that might yield some income for a dozen years. Maybe.
Like Philbert sat with his career counsellor in high school and asked, Now, what college is best for my hopes to become a professional bodybuilder? What kind of classes and grades should I be targeting here to position myself best for acceptance into an appropriate program, so that I might obtain my dream job?
More like ... Oops! Basketball ain't gonna happen. Neither is a traditional job. So ... Well, I train with weights, and I seem to come by a better-than-most physique without much effort ... Let's keep at it and see if I can coast on this for as long as possible. Maybe it can even feed my overly-large ego.
Give me a break.

While I generally believe affeman is wrong with almost 100% of his BB posts, I can't disagree with him here. None of the things mentioned above matter at all. Only the end result, and the end result is he's been the best in the entire world at what he does for the last 4 years.
Pro bodybuilding is retarded, partially because of the reasons you posted, but he's #1 right now, and it looks like it's going to continue.

Almost all his vids are like that. Going back to his first DVD. The only one where he was past paced was when he did the bench press challenge.

The end result? The end result of pro bodybuilding is health problems.

For once, I 100% agree with your post.
This is bodybuilding folks, not power lifting. Notice how Arnold hasn't had any major cervical & lumbar decompression + fusions. You want to continue to look and be relatively healthy into your late years.
Phil has figured out what works best for him. He might not groan or have catchy phrases that he barks out in between sets while making funny faces and shaking his head violently, but he is winning the Mr. Olympia every year.
Good for him.

True, true.
And you are not referring to the violent head shaking that makes you wonder if Ronnie is trying to keep himself awake or mimic a dog shaking the water off itself?

Yes. That's exactly what I am referring to.
Ronnie does a masterful variation of this every now and then:

Listen, most pros in the 70's trained with passion and heavy and hard, and a lot of them did NOT wind up like Ronnie Coleman.
Hell, Dorian trained SUPER heavy and hard, and he is not riddled with injuries later on in life.
Sure, all that matters is the end results, and Phil winning the Mr. O. But that doesn't mean we can say he has no passion and trains like utter shit, because he does.
I think there is a balance between training dumb (like Branch) and train hard and heavy and with passion(like Arnold did and many others).
Phil will always be remembered for his Olympia wins. He will also be remembered for being the most whiniest, cry baby, uninspiring, lazy Mr. O ever. That is part of the "legacy" he will leave behind. His choice :D :D
-

look you
You're the only one who tries to defend him
It's sad
Either start a new crusade or just fuck off- u won't be missed
-
Ronnie trained too heavy for his skeletal structure IMO. Any kind of free squat is going to give you spinal issues past a certain point.
I personally hate squats due to my long legs and short torso and have only ever humoured them on a smith machine. There is nothing wrong with training on high-end machines for certain movements.
Phil may not be the most entertaining bodybuilder, but he is being clever. He's not going to put much muscle on whilst he's cutting, regardless of what he claims, the majority of his mass is already there, he's simply cruising into the O training moderately hard and letting the drugs do the work...

two ruptured biceps and tricep?

I'll pass on watching the great Mr Olympia looking totally bored inside a bench press machine. He almost puts me off training.

Injuries are inevitable in bodybuilding.
Affeman was comparing him to ronnie who has had back surgery, knee surgery, hip surgery, and is in walkers, crutches, and wheelchairs.
Dorian has not sustained any injuries of that nature.

Dorian sustained career-ending injuries.
I know it's true, because it says it on his website:
"Due to the injury, Yates was forced to retire, with a pro record of 15 wins and two second-place finishes."

I am talking about the AFTER effects. After one retires. Dorian is not riddled with extensive injuries like Ronnie after his career. That is what we are referring to--Affeman posted pictures of Ronnie post-competitive days.
Did Dorian need multiple hip, back, or knee surgeries AFTER retirement? No. Are there any pics of Dorian like Ronnie in his post-competitive days (with pins, crutches, wheelchairs, walkers)?
Yes, he sustained injuries that ended his career, but post-competitive days, his health seems to be fine, when compared to Ronnie.
Thus, my original statement still stands: Dorian trained heavy, and post-competitively is doing fine health wise. From what we know and what we can see.
-

I don't think so. I mean, I haven't seen any posted here before.
I think he is doing relatively well. Then again, Ronnie trained unlike any other bodybuilder I have ever seen and had results that have been unmatched by any bodybuilder in the entire history of bodybuilding.
Also, I don't think I ever saw Arnold lift as heavy as Ronnie. I always saw videos/pictures of Arnold lifting light weight and smiling throughout his workouts.

True. Dorian trained heavy, but Ronnie trained like he was Atlas himself, and enjoyed it, and continued to train the same way AFTER he retired (even after getting his hips replaced!). Dorian was like "eff that, I am having fun".
It seems that light to moderate weights, high reps is a path to longevity, like Vince Taylor and I think Shawn, Lee Haney, Flex, and I believe even Albert Beckles did the same.

Dorian lifted damn heavy and trained, and post-competitvely, he appears to be doing fine, unlike Ronnie.
As I stated, you can still train hard and with passion and be doing fine after retirement. Phil is just lazy and has no true passion for bodybuilding.

Well...your last part, the same was said about Flex, and he had 4 Arnold Classics and multiple other wins to show for it, and Phil has four Sandows. I don't think it's laziness, otherwise be would just quit and take his money and contacts and do other things. I remember one time he said that he wanted to see how big he could get his arms...Also, he would never have gotten onstage at all if he had no passion for it. He would never go for the first or Fourth Sandow.
What's the difference in this vid and what Phil was saying and what Ronnie is saying in this vid (notice Ronnie is curling 35s?)
They both seem to have the same training philosophy when it comes to arms. And maybe other body parts. And if you look at their rep speed and intensity, it's about the same.
Now, I believe that the Unbelievable and Cost of Redemption has skewed our views of what intensity and poundages need to be. Also, I believe Dorian did a lot of work with machines, but he was "intense". Yes, Phil's vids are kinda boring, especially the chest ones, but how many people in the gym would be just the same?
-
Phil has a passion for recognition, attention, haterz and living like he won the jackpot..
-

That's the thing though... We aren't trying to compare Phil to most people in the gym. He's supposed to be an Olympian. Idk...

Exactly! So is he supposed to yell out "Gifted...Get That Gold!!!", or "The Champ Is Here!!", or
"It's that black card baby!!!" for every rep, and every set?
Or do we expect him to be lifting a ton of weight just to impress us, the viewers?
Do we expect something that separates him from us? Is that it?

That's what I don't get either. If he's able to get himself into condition to be the best at what he does on the entire planet, who cares?
I'm not even a Heath fan, but this seems kind of nuts. He's a pro bodybuilder, why would anyone expect anything more from him?
-
Just think that an Olympian would work harder than I do, but you're right.
It's just the cherry on top of the shit sundae that is bodybuilding.
-
Ronnie started the "super supplements" about ten years later than the current champ.
He's 51. Phil is 35.
-

That's what some people just don't get. Genetics, response to gear = elite pro bodybuilder.

uncircumcised neck of peace
-
if he trained hard then we'd find something else to dislike about him
unfortunately phil is just a douche bag
-
A good friend lived in Pembroke Pines fla. worked out in same gym as Vince Taylor. He told me Vince didn't work out hard and used the lightest weights of any pro he'd ever seen but he was also amazed at what a good responder he must have been.
So maybe Phil deserves a pass

Ronnie trained like a powerlifter/bber hybrid and I don't see many powerlifters with issues like Ronnie's.

Ronnie is just an example what happens afterwards, when you have been using modern gear for decades. Rest of the pack will follow sooner or later. Difference between Ronnie and Dorian is that Ronnie try to maintain his weight, Dorian's weigh is less than half what it has been. There is plenty of obese males who have similar problems when they reach 60, and they have never lift anything but hamburgers and fork. Ronnie's weight has been in same category for decades, he has been lifting weights which most of people can move only with forklifts, and now he pay the price.
-
300lb for what is essentially a land based biped mammal is excessive to say the least.
-
yup.
his smug face is enough

ARNOLD for his era was massive and weighed 240 at reported height over 6'1,today that's skinny, arnold was able to come down in weights and in his movies RANGE 190-220 ,,
