I recently finished playing this game. Totally overrated in my opinion. I mean, yeah it's a pretty good game, solid story, awesome graphics but the gameplay gets boring at times. :-\

I played the remastered version.
I thought it was good.
Not the best game ever, but it was good.
-
Yea I played the Remaster a few weeks ago. Was pretty good and I enjoyed it and while it's right up there with the greats, I've played better.

I don't think it's a bad game. It's a solid game, a pretty good one, but not the best ever created as the internet has been claiming the last two years.

They see things how others see it not to feel left out.
I once asked on another forum (before I got banned for hurting sensitive feelings) what everyone's favourite level been on any game they've ever played. On the first page 'All Ghillied Up' from COD4 was mentioned a few times. Then a bit more on the 2nd page. In the end, 90% of followers posted that it was their favourite level. Really? A random level in a random game suddenly everyone's favourite?
-

I am a sucker for almost anything Mario.
Super Smash Brothers.
Phoenix Wright (the series is amazing)
The first Legend of Zelda will always be a favorite of mine.
Super Street Fighter II Turbo Champion Edition is my favorite fighter of all time.
Batman Arkham Asylum
However, if you're talking the last 10 years, my absolute 100% favorite game in the past 10 years is easy...
Red Dead Redemption

Nice. I was talking about games you've played since you was a child btw.
I've also enjoyed playing some games from the Zelda series. The game I've enjoyed the most is Resident Evil 4. Had a crappy story that didn't make sense with the previous games but the gameplay is awesome. I literally beat the game at least 20 times.

Definitely on my top 20 games of all time.

Best game ever made was Custer's Revenge, try it.
There is a PC-version that pays homage to the original Atari-version.
-

resident evil 4 was great, only game i actually prefered on the wii. Sure not the best graphics there but the gameplay worked really well with the wiis controlls
-
Not a bad game, was pretty slow if you ask me. Did a good job of building tension. Personally, the Borderlands Series are my favorite games.
-
I really enjoyed The Last of Us. I played the remastered version and felt the storyline between Joel and Ellie touching. Even played the dlc .
Red Dead Redemption was amazing! Even the zombie dlc was good. Easily Rockstar's best game.
Right now I'm semi-obsessed with Witcher 3. It's glitchy, but dammit, it does so much else right. Besides, glitches here and there are to be expected in a game that big.
-
I'm more a casual gamer than a avid one, but The Last of Us was one of the best games I've played. Naughty Dog have really set the standard on how to make great games.

the real question is, who do you main?

watched a friend play through most of it. thought the dlc was actually pretty good and even touching (no homo).
anyone saying it's the best game ever hasn't been gaming for very long. people saying it's boring and slow paced, jokes about ladders etc... eh, I thought it was actually surprisingly fun, taking a restrained, refined approach to stealth mechanics and storytelling.
it wasn't the most ambitious game, mechanically -- as some of the early trailers made it out to be -- but it was solid as hell.
the level where you played as ellie was awesome, too.
-
Best fighting game I've played is Capcom vs Snk 2. The 6 systems of play and the ratio thing added up a lot to the game. Pretty pretty good.

Great game I like to pretend the zombies are dirty South Koreans.
-
Banjo Kazooie was much better.
-
I tried about three times to get into Red Dead Redemption. But for some reason, I got bored and wandered away each time very early in the game.
Combination of the 3rd person POV that I hate and the long ass times between the action parts.
-
Age of Empires III for me. Played that the most of all my games.
Very much enjoyed LA Noire and The Witcher 3 too.

That was a very good game.
The facial captures were top notch.
I recommend it.

The game mechanics in titles like this are elementary. If you want a real challenge in gaming, play Trials Fusion. Last of Us and Uncharted are all about showing off graphics on the ps4. They're able to have great visuals at 60fps because there usually isn't much going on. A lot of cut scenes and utter boredom. Games should have some challenge to them, but this is your typical tap X game, hit Y to avoid getting stabbed in a cut scene. Same with Metal Gear Solid. The only reason these games do well is the abundance of utter geeks in the gaming world. Look at World of Warcraft. It looks like a game from 20 years ago and plays like one.
Shooters at least have a high skill element, but the cookie cutter gameplay in Last of Us and similar titles puts me to sleep.
-
The challenge is making something "cinematic" that isn't a linear corridor crawl
I'd take a far cry or skyrim 1000 x over a last of us, I want to make my own experience not play an interactive movie.
-

We disagreed on this long ago. Yeah the facial detail was interesting but everything else was super boring. Moving the cursor around the screen, looking for clues, played a lot like many boring android play store find a clue games. Choosing between 4-5 predetermined answers, until they were exhsusted wasny much fun. Driving around got boring. Zero replay value. Playing it today, it looks and feels ancient.

I like that play style myself.
It's the same reason why I enjoy the Phoenix Wright series.
While you may not like that style, they sold 6 million copies, so I'm sure they are happy with that.
Everyone has their own individual preferences on playing style. That's the thing about games.

I started playing it and got a good deal through before Witcher 3. Its not that great at all in my opinion. I don't like the forced track you are on and the gameplay does get really boring and tedious. I do not like the lack of adversaries and I think they are poorly done as well.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Red Dead Redemption best ever. I concur. You and I share the same brain!
Witcher 3 is up there as well.
-

You will get bored of that game. Its one of the most tedious games you ever will play and its really not that great at all.
You will be highly disappointed if you did not like Last of Us (which I didn't really) all that much. You have been warned!

I need to revisit this, as I've heard this here repeatedly, and from video game people I know in real life and trust.
It just never totally grabbed me.

It's slow in the beginning, but once you get to where you are taking the carriage rides to move around, you're set.

I did a bunch of missions with the exlir old guy. But I was still on the horse, and got side tracked on some dumb missions. I will have to get back into it before Halo 5 and MGS gets me.
But, who knows if they will. I've been playing Far Cry 4 for about 5 months - never have the time to play.
-

I am one of those weird people that like to ride out to all of my missions and explore the scenery and environment. I do the same in Witcher 3!
-
still like resident evil 4 for playstation 2, when your done with game there is many extras to play and explore...
-
Quake 3 Arena
Counter-strike 1.6
GOAT fps.

I like metal gear solid 3
Final fantasy 7 would be my all time fave though but street fighter 2 turbo is likely the game that stole most hours from me. Them again it was released before I discover the joys of vagina, cars, motorbikes and weightlifting (and was an adult and had to work)

Metal Gear Sold 3 is one of my favorite games ever, if not absolute favorite. Epic storyline, final battle, music, everything. 2 hour boss fight vs The End.......fantastic game.
Loved FFVII as well, although gamers couldn't hand the series going mainstream. Both games were totally engrossing.

My buddy beat it on his second try, so I went all out to get it right on my first try. I had the flu and was home, so I literally crept around the entire landscape, listening, looking, etc..
At one point, the bastard actually crept up and got me, but I slipped off a short cliff that I was right on the edge of, so somehow I got away with that and wasn't captured.
After the last shot, I realized it took two whole hours.
Hideo Kojima actually made his developers / designers read sniper books and camp on the side of a mountain. His goal was that, if he could get half the players to hate it, but have half the players LOVE it, he would have accomplished what he wanted.
-
I've only played the 1st and 4th Metal Gear games. The 1st one was ground breaking and epic. I was probably around 12 when it came out on the PS1.
It had such a cool theme as well:

Nothing of the new generation interests me really, nothing on ps4 has convinced me to buy it yet.

The Batman game has tempted me but I'll probably wait until Uncharted 4 is released next year.

I hope 5 will be what I thought 4 was going to be: the best game ever.
Instead, 4 was like the best game ever and the worst game ever smashed into each other, head-on ;D
From Ground Zeroes and all the preview information, it looks like 5 is going to deliver. But with Kojima, you never know...

Xbox One at the moment.
Had both Xbox 360 and PS3 but sold the PS3 just because it felt excessive. Now, I barely get to play and the Xbox is used for the multi media aspects more than anything.

"showed promise" is a ludicrous understatement. the first story trailer showed mind-blowing aesthetic and technical accomplishment. the first in-game demonstration showed mind-blowing mechanics.
in the end, the game was beautiful and featured the best 3rd person mechanics ever, but we only got glimpses of great scenarios (e.g. the end of the second act). huge stretches of the game were hamstrung by kojima's wacky-ass story (e.g. the gimmicky later acts).
if ground zeroes is any indication, the phantom pain will feature bigger, more complex levels and scenarios and even more sophisticated controls and mechanics. in other words, everything i wanted!
-

No, it was just a high level, abbreviated description.
Now go take a picture of the last apple you ate and writes us a four paragraph review on how it may/may not have ruined your week.
BuT seriously - agree with the rest of your post, just concerned about story and cutscenes again.

i see. i hardly keep up with gaming news anymore, so i'm just going off GZ and a few murmerings on some game forums i frequent. sounds like there's going to be more meat on phantom pain's bones. i only hope i can make enough progress on the rest of my life to be able to enjoy the game when it comes out.

MGS 3 is awesome. In my second play I avoided being noticed during the entire game to get the stealth camo. Just a couple of days after beating the game for the second time my PS2 died and I never got to use the camo. :'(

The PC version is absolutely breathtaking at times. I'm not big on shooters myself, but it was definitely gorgeous.

Have that on PC. Need to get round to playing that at some point. I have a backlog of games that stretches for years. So little time to play these days. Makes me miss my university years of gaming all night and skipping Complexity Theory classes

Fallout 4 is going to be epic. Looking forward to the new hitman.
The Evil Within is a great game and although it's cheap sometimes, it's a challenging game in an old-school sense.

I loved Far Cry 3, but didn't like 4 that much.
For the most part this was no fault of the game, but nonetheless, I still stand behind my two main criticisms:
1. The game is WAY too similar to Far Cry 3. I understand the desire to build on a solid mechanical foundaiton, but why was the scenario and story almost exactly the same as well? The story, characters, and campaign structure are usually more liable to change from one installment of a series to the next (and consider, none of the Far Cry games' stories are related anyway!) than the lower-level game mechanisms and yet I think you could say they made more changes to the latter, if there were some way to measure such things.
Also, I liked Jason way more than the protagonist of Far Cry 4. I loved the "amoral" character development of Far Cry 3, screw the detractors.
2. There's a widespread criticism of games (esp. Ubi's open-world output) these days: you spend more time looking at abstract symbols (mini-maps, icons, quest markers, arrows) than the actual game. For some reason, this really irked me in Far Cry 4. I felt like I was just rushing from one little dot to the next little blip, staring at a tiny drawing the whole time.
By the way, how did this thread turn into random musings about anything videogame related?

Why not?
Hell, I would be ok if a mod put this into the E board.
We are online a lot, surely a lot of us are gamers to some extent.
I think it's great.
-
My all time faves
World of Warcraft (burning crusade was the peak, greatest game ever most fun ive ever had in a game honestly. its shit now though)
Counter Strike Source
Call of Duty MW 1 and 2. say what you want about mw2 but it was a great game once you got good at it.
Age of Empires and Mythology series. All of them were great
Halo: Combat Evolved. so far ahead of its time I just reinstalled it tonight and am playing thru the campaign again for the first time in probably a decade! the soundtrack is without a doubt my favorite game soundtrack ever.
STARCRAFT!!!! one of the first video games I ever played and I played it for YEARS. SC2 was good too but only worth one play through. the original is always the very best.
Mechwarrior 4 series. not many know this one but its defo one to check out if you like FPS games with a bit of a twist
Elder Scrolls Oblivion and Skyrim. Greatest single player RPG games I've ever played. I spent over 24 hours in a single session many times completing oblivion. Then I got into Skyrim and modding it has been so much fun.
I'm really looking forward to the new Need for Speed, and Halo 5 is coming out around the same time so I may just have to pick up an Xbox: One for these two. Also the new Elder Scrolls game coming out I will have to get too.
-
Do you guys get much time to play? These days I'm lucky if I have an hour a week. Not enough time to immerse yourself in the game.
-
Nope. And honestly, I can't enjoy games anymore. Can't block out the other worries of life as I play.
Even on my three week vacation, I only managed 6 hours.
-
Do you guys get much time to play? These days I'm lucky if I have an hour a week. Not enough time to immerse yourself in the game.
Same here.
This is why I prefer linear games like Uncharted over open world games like GTA because they are less time consuming.
-
Dishonoured looks good
-
Do you guys get much time to play? These days I'm lucky if I have an hour a week. Not enough time to immerse yourself in the game.
Nope - that's why the last few years I spent most of my gaming playing CoD deathmatches - was easy to log on, play and log off without forgetting storylines, etc........
Then, my friends stopped playing as much with the last CoD, so I actually finished a campaign for the first time in since CoD MW.
Was hoping the remade Halo 2, 3 would bring it back but that was botched.....

PS3 was actually mostly 1080.
Xbox only did 720, but I consider it lazy that people didn't work out the 1080 upscaling for the PS3.
I never really understood why the Xbone is not at 1080. Wanting to put more processing into the pretty metro UI is all I can think of.

???
There were a HANDFUL of 1080p games from last gen. Saying most PS3 games ran at 1080p is downright wrong. This isn't even a "little known secret". Remember when Wipeout HD came out? One of the big bullet points everyone was reporting: a TRUE 1080p PS3 game! Why was this so notable? Because the vast majority of games (on both consoles) were rendered at sub-720p and upscaled.

My point is that the PS3 was capable of doing 1080p natively and the Xbox 360 could not.
While they both had upscalers, the PS3 didn't have to use one if the game was made at 1080p while the Xbox360 was not capable of doing anything at a native 1080p.

I think Lost Planet was rendered 1080p on 360. Though I might be wrong. Only really care about it on PC as I didn't pay 700 bucks for a 980Ti for nothing.
.... Well, I guess I didn't pay 700 bucks for nothing as I never play PC games. Had a little go on the latest Batman on PS4 last night. Looks pretty. The Bat Mobile effing awesome

I have always loved the Rocksteady Bat games though. They are truly top notch.

no it was not, look on the back of the cover of the last of us which had some of the best graphics on ps3, it says 720
the god of war 3 remaster on ps4 is marketed as "remastered in 1080p, again one of the best looking games on the console
360 boxes said 1080 which was obviously a lie when their new console can't even get 1080

LOL yes!!
I saw that on the notice board a few days ago and had to call Jezebelle over to look at it. She thought it was hilarious.

Fuck fuck fuck
Anyone play arkham night...really good game but i have played alot of hours and was at like 70% (did alot of sidemission) but its a glutch in the game , the cloudburstctank killed me at the same time i killed him and when i respawned i cant to shit. It says i mist find him but he is nowhere and i cant go out of the batmobil and the bridges are closed........im this close to go to the store in central pyongyang and say they must give me my money back..not that theu will...heard the game is a massive failute on pc woth alot of nuhs...if anuone started to demand to get the moneu back aube the developers stop selling games that arent finnished and use the players as free beta testers
-
The reviews are basically making it sound as if MGS V is exactly what I expected (after GZ) and hoped for... MGS 4 + more complex mechanics + deeper scenarios + less story emphasis.
This WILL be the best game of all time. I can feel it...
At the same time, I wonder if this is the end of an era. I haven't been following the Kojima/Konami split, but if it means he's losing some budget / personnel then, that's a real shame. This kind of game only happens when you have the most money and the most talented team under the most talented direction. That's the REAL definition of independent gaming: the resources to make your dream game come true, with as little compromise as possible.
Kojima is awesome and very fortunate. Even without Konami, I can't wait to see what he makes next.

They took the PC version off of steam because it was so shit... Rocksteady is working on fixing it as we speak.
Apparently they had an outside company do the PC version and they didn't have much quality control.
Submit a bug report to them.
They'll patch it I bet.

If mgs v is as good as they say it is, they would raise 100 million with kickstarter funding within a week for mgs6.

I have a feeling Konami would only allow Kojima to do metal gear, but how many times has he talked about ending the franchise and moving on? I suspect this is part of the reason they split.
I want to see what other ideas he has. Of course, now he's probably not going to have a metal gear budget to back his next idea. Maybe you're right about kickstarter, though.

I bought my PS3 when MGS 4 came out. I still remember walking out of Best Buy with nearly $600 less dollars in my bank account. My summer job had just ended and I hadn't saved nearly as much as I had hoped, but somehow that only added to the excitement...

Kojima has already left.

What has boggled my mind is that Kojima is about the only Japanese guy to make a game with story and is about the only talented one from that whole country. The rest of them only seem to produce button mashers, stupid anime games and poorly executed fantastical hack and slash pointlessness that all feature weird yelling and whining child like sounds.
Kojima is probably hated because he can actually make a great game with a great story and gameplay.

Legend of Zelda ocarina of time, Silent Hill, the first Resident Evils etc etc. You're either trolling or not very smart.

I've always loved Japanese games. ;D
Their best games are much more beautiful and have "tighter" mechanics.
The latter point is a little hard to describe without examples. The main one that sticks out in my mind: health systems. Many Japanese games don't feature health bars, or have very small health bars. You aren't supposed to get hit in these games; taking damage is almost never necessary. Many players master the levels, and then clear them "perfectly". In contrast, Western games have never been like this. They've always featured big health bars and ample health replenishment. Taking damage is inevitable.
While I'm not going to argue which style is inherently better, I prefer the Japanese style. When the player must be able to clear a stage without taking damage, every aspect of the game must be carefully considered. When you have a huge health bar and the environment is littered with health packs, the developers can get away with much sloppier design.
Have you ever tried the Souls series (Demon's Souls, Dark Souls I/II, Bloodborne)? These are modern "action RPGs" with a subtle method of storytelling. There are few cutscenes or dialogs, but the "story" is told through visual details and item descriptions. You have to piece the story together on your own, and doing so is quite fun. The attention to detail is meticulous.
Anyway, I mention these games because they have almost no anime trappings and show the strengths of traditional Japanese game design in an era where, sadly, many Japanese developers seem to have lost their way.
Some great Japanese developers:
Platinum games (hideki kamiya, formerly shinji mikami)
Nintendo (at times... I wouldn't call them too great these days: Shigeru Miyamoto, Yokoi Gunpei (RIP))
FROM software (hidetaka miyazaki)
CAVE
Capcom (many... most gone now. studio has had its ups and downs over the years)
SCE Japan Studio (Fumito Ueda -- departed now)

Shit, Shit and Shit. Next.
I never liked any of them. Zelda is a child's RPG. Nothing like The Witcher.

Not trying to be rude, but Japanese games do appeal to people with more a neurotic, OCD brain. Their entire culture is basically steeped in OCD mechanics and their video games are no different. I can see why you prefer their games. ;)
-
Pattern-seeking morons fooled by flashing lights and whirring sounds. Rinse, repeat, then repeat 20 times again.
Fuck Mario, Fuck Dark Souls and Fuck all of their games except Metal Gear.

Mario Brothers makes fuck all sense.
Games for morons.

Exactly. Its such a piece of shit, it can't even decide if it is an RPG or kiddie game masquerading as one.
Have fun with your children characters and anime, you fucking baby.

I fully agree. I've always felt a sense of affinity with Japanese culture.
That said, I'm also very sensitive to visual beauty, and I think Japan also wins here, hands down. Not talking about anime (though I don't mind it), but the imagination displayed by their top studios is unparalleled.
I think MGS is actually the perfect example. Look at how bland and boring Splinter Cell -- the most similar western series -- appears by comparison. And then, take any other series which uses a modern day / slightly-futuristic sci-fi setting, like various entries in CoD or Battlefield... or countless other series. They all fall flat by comparison.
I'm only saying, plenty of Japanese studios display this kind of visual imagination. Platinum games, FROM software, Capcom, Grasshopper Manufacture, SCE Japan, etc.
Random screenshot from Bloodborne, an action-rpg with a Gothic-style setting:

Now how about "Lords of the Fallen", a Western knockoff:

Just curious. What games you have enjoyed the most?
Red Dead Redemption, Witcher 3, Grand Theft Auto (all of them), Mass Effect-all of them. Many other games as well. Metal Gear series, Forza, Gran Turismo. Too many to list really.

Witcher 3.
End of thread.

Am I the only one ready to take a weeks worth of vacation when Fallout 4 drops? I've stashed a good 50 gallons of mtn dew, 20lbs of dorritos and got pizza delivery on speed dial. I will probably die from either malnutrition or brain seizures. :D ;D 8)

Never played any of the fallout games, as I got older I drifted more towards games I could spend a half hour at when I had a little free time, like fifa soccer or mortal kombat rather than the marathon sessions on the likes of ff7 I had as a young teenager

Small sessions of Counter Strike: Global Offensive is a guilty pleasure of mine. Hopping in and playing a few rounds, perfect when you don't have hours to spare.

Haven't tried it, but looks to be a nice and realistic game:

All the best RPGs are Japanese. I was bored to tears with the Mass Effect games.

Can you give us a little more detail?
- Drastically better AI than previous games in the series. If you played GZ, you know this... the variety of behavior is incredible. They have realistic eyesight, as well -- no longer deaf and dumb, you have to be really careful. I feel they're even sharper than in GZ.
- Absolutely beautiful game. Again, if you played GZ you know what to expect, but the environments are HUGE, the day/night cycle looks awesome, the enemy designs are imaginative, I could go on and on... one of the best looking games ever, easily.
- Builds on GZ and MGS4's mechanics -- the best, deepest systems ever seen in a third person shooting game.
I've only scratched the surface so far, but I have no complaints.
-

went to the store just before it closed and got it yesterday, only played 15mins but looks excellent. Git some great reviews to

Fallout and Hitman come out in Nov. I would take vacation time, however, I work for myself so I'm just going to do some all-nighters.
