Came from being a bantamweight to winning the Mr. O and still doing it at the highest level. He's really in a category by himself. He looked really good at the O and was hard as nails. I don't know what to say about him anymore. Props.
Dexter should have won this year BTW. Sorry Phil. And if you guys didn't catch it, Dexter said he would beat Phil next year.

Living Legend
-
He's a walking advertisement for moderation in an era of self-destructive excess.
-
2 points:
1) He will not beat Phil next year
2) As much as Dexter is a great bodybuilder, its sad that someone who is close to 50 years old is the second best in the world
-
SF1900, I wouldn't bet against Dexter. He smells blood.
It says more for Dexter than it does for the field. Dexter is that good.

Wiggs Dexter is great but he won't beat Phil and it's not because he can't it's because the judges won't allow it. It's still surprising that he upset Jay.
Dex, and this is no insult, is consistent every year, much like Shawn Ray was. Dexter won't come in heavier or bigger, size for the sake of size, but he will be the best conditioned competitor on stage, every year.
It has been documented that the reigning champ can show up with one arm bloated and out of shape and he will leave with the title. Nothing will change.

Wiggs, I agree with what Dave says. I don't think the judges will let Dexter beat Phil, even if he is better.
Phil is much younger and that is what the judges are looking for. Phil's whole look, the baller attitude, the haters, is what draws in the teenagers and young crowd. That equals money.
The IFBB like most organizations, are scandalous.
If it was my choice, I would 100% take Dexter over Phil. Any day of the week. I just don't think the judges will look at it like that.
To a certain extent, it does say more for Dexter than for the field. However, its quite sad that not ONE youngster is 2nd best in the world. I mean, you would think at Dex's age, he'd be placing maybe 5th to 8th. And good for him that he is going strong, but it does indicate that the younger guys cannot keep up with him. Good for Dexter, pathetic for the younger generation of bodybuilders.
-
Dexter said a few weeks before that he could beat Phil. He seemed very confident and he also said that Phil was going to keep coming in worse and worse because he isn't changing anything. Dexter has been right except for beating him but even then I think it was close
After prejudging my folks had him and Rhoden up top and Saturday people swore Dexter was murdering Phil on stage. Have to say that I was shocked that so many thought Dexter had it won. The boos and walking out was really surprising to me because I kinda felt like Phil looks better tonight so he will win
I don't think it's going to be Dexter that beats phil next year if he competes.

I disagree. From a marketing standpoint Phil isn't the greatest for the ifbb . He's insulted Arnold, his social media antics are beyond unprofessional, and He's not very likeable.
There's also some good young guys. They just won't let them move up in the ranks because they refuse to let the old guard like branch go. A lot of those guys don't look that bad. They just keep rewarding the ones that do.

You fail to consider that the younger generation loves the whole "baller attitude" and "hater" comments by Phil. Just look at his facebook. He may be disliked, but he probably has more followers than people who dislike him. He very much appeals to the younger generation which is similar to him, i.e., egotistical, self-centered, shutting down the haters, taking selfies in the gym, etc.

I think Those young guys are the ones he is arguing with and I also think his act is wearing thin for people. I don't think Phil is invincible. The way the audience reacted at the Olympia let me know that his days are numbered. He's not so far ahead of people that it would be inconceivable that he would lose.

I honestly don't think the ifbb cares what the fans say. Its not a case of whos most popular in the crowds eyes, or who is the best built on stage. Dorian was booed, he competed until he retired. Ronnie was booed as was Jay, both these guys stayed past their welcome but their eventual successor was lying in the wings.
If this were to be the same for Phil who's his successor; Kai, Dexter, Wolf,Branch, Kulco, Ramy? The title will go to the one who can carry the torch (I'm thinking Kulco will figure it out at some point, he's the ifbb prototype with a prestigious competitive history).
The only way anything changes is when the ifbb is feeling financial pressure.

Well, as I said, he is disliked by many, including young people. Despite this, he still has a huge following.
As for peoples reactions during the Mr. O, everyone boos when the guy they want to win doesn't win. So, you really can't judge by that. Hell, they also get mad when Branch places 6. I am sure some people wanted him higher in the placings.

I agree with this, hard not to. So why do you suppose he was so disliked on here as Mr. O? At the time, some even said worst ever, never understood why.

I think maybe because he was going against two quality mass monsters in Ronnie and Jay. The guys he is up against today are mostly chumps.

But isn't this pretty much what happened when he dethroned Jay? Why couldn't he do it again with Phil, wrong sponsors or whatever?

I meant their reaction let me know that people don't think Phil is untouchable which is how I understand it was before. I only watched last year because I wanted To see what would happen after that press conference. I just couldn't believe so many thought Dexter had it won because Phil looked better Saturday and I didn't think he was going to lose it.
As far as his successors it seemed like the buzz was around Big Ramy bonac and mccarver
I will be interested to see who competes at the Arnold.

Well, I never said that people dont think phil is untouchable. Sure, many people do, but all that matters is where the IFBB wants him to place. He has enough crowd following, as well as being a college graduate, well spoken during interviews, and squeaky clean (unlike Kai). In the end, this is enough in the IFBB eyes to get another Sandow, UNLESS someone else can TOTALLY blow him out of the water.
-
But isn't this pretty much what happened when he dethroned Jay? Why couldn't he do it again with Phil, wrong sponsors or whatever?
Theoretically it could happen but you have to look at Dexter's upset of Jay as an anomaly, much like Gunter beating Ronnie at the GNC. Both times I thought that a new era of bodybuilding judging was upon us, but it wasnt.
Much like Dexter, the judges have been consistently consistent with their voting tendencies.
I'm not saying Dexter wasnt worthy of beating Jay, he was, but why did he only have one go round at the top? Was Jay that much better the next year or was Dexter that much worse, was Jay so off (comparatively to his "best") the year he lost? It would appear that was a one time event because there was no rhyme or reason to it (meaning Jays improvement from year to year wasn't mind blowing enough to beat the always consistent Dexter).
Dexter should have won this year, it's unlikely he will show up with a much different physique next year, so Phil would have to be much worse than he was this year, his worst showing to date, in order to lose.
-

Phil needs to change his attitude, take some points from Kai, as much as doesn't want to swallow the grapefruit juice, Kai has something good to offer. His calmness, and thoughtful persona brings people in, he is inclusive and doesn't push people away. Phil needs that right now. But, he must be genuine about it. Transition into what he used to be. Anybody remember the Kai Greene and Phil Heath guest posing where they did the whole "shoot em up" thing? Phil needs that back.
As far as physique, Phil needs to train chest more. Put in some of that old school barbell work, and market it as he is being more hardcore---for the haters. Get some thicker pecs going to offset the ab blurring that is going on. And find out why that is as well.

At the time I thought they were making a statement and Dex would usher in a trend toward the more classically aesthetic physique. But Jay did, in fact, come in much better the following year ('09 was his peak year to many, though some of us still say '01). Then with Branch and Kai placing so high later, though, and now rewarding a much bloofier Phil, who knows anymore.
It would be an opportune time again is all I'm saying.
-
Who is better overall in their prime. Dexter or Phil?
Better career?

Yes I agree. He needs a complete image overhaul And a PR team.
As I said I think it's craziness that a man who literally had sex with a piece of fruit on camera had more fans and is more popular than the current Mr O. I know it's all competitive and stuff but again it was also crazy that none of the guys were really was at his victory party...I think he's under a lot of stress and there's a lot going on behind the scenes.
He and Jays training are less than inspiring. Boring, barely have any range of motion. At least Phil doesn't have sloppy form and techniquw.
He should also not be so poofy.
-
nobody will ever replicate what dex is doing this year.... same way nobody will ever replicate ronnie's 2003 form

2008 Olympia, where Dexter won. I am a fan:

He's a walking advertisement for moderation in an era of self-destructive excess.
I kinda doubt that anybody on the Olympia stage can credible claim "moderation."
-
Cmon guys, Dex looks good standing by himself, but when he stands next to a Bodybuilder, different story....
-
It's so incredible that he's still taking mass quantities of drugs.
Otherwise for the greater part, an excellent physique.
-
Do you think charlse glass had anything to do with it? diff drug routine and training techniques???
I know everyone says its all drugs but from experience changing angles and exercises deff has rounded out my muscle bellies more, cant help but think that mite of made a slight change with dex
-
Dexters nose is wider than Heath.
-
Dexters knows he is wider than Heath.
fixed

Chris Aceto & Dave Palumbo said that Rhoden should've beaten Dexter at the Olympia. They said that Rhoden had been consistently beating Dexter the past few years.... and this year, Rhoden showed up better than ever... but somehow Dexter beats him.

I thought Rhoden was the best one on Friday evening and I think he's the way Mr O should look. He just flows together Well. He doesn't look like a big pair of arms and legs thrown together like Phil
He does need to step it up in the stage presence department. He always looks like he's about to go to sleep and he needs a redbull. He doesn't need to scream at the audience but at least look like you're alive! I think that was a factor in Dexter winning

Then why is the first place graphic under Dex? Not to mention that Big Ramy has never placed above Dex at the O.

Rhoden found a new gut. That's why he was in 3rd. I have no argument with that. You can't have a gut.
-
Mister same shit different day.
-

;D
-

Yeah. Chad Nicholls & DJ said that the mini gut may have cost Rhoden a win this year
-
Unbelievable how he keeps improving without those usual signs of ware and tare in bodybuilders competing at his level at his age
You know, shortened triceps, shortened forearms, atrophy in quads, reduction in fullness etc. etc.
His formula works, he doesn't appear to try and drastically change his physique from year to year. He gets dry, full and retains striation and definition throughout the muscle bellies.
-
More impressed with Albert Beckles.
-
Rhoden found a new gut. That's why he was in 3rd. I have no argument with that. You can't have a gut.
same thing happened to the other Flex Wheeler copy, Melvin Anthony. When Melvin got bigger (apparently used Chad Nicholls) and placed 5th at the Mr. O, he grew a gut as well.
-
He's one of the greatest, both physique and achievements wise, no doubt about it... But still, being the best or second best in the world at 46 is telling more about the joke level of competition than anything else...
-
He will place in front of kai greene every year from now on until kai retires
-
I for one would love to know the inside story on what he's taken and where he's at with his bloodwork and other health stats. Would be interesting as hell to see how a guy who appears to approach the sport with a very conservative longetivity approach is really fairing, so a lot of guys could get an idea on the wear and tear of this type of approach.
I would think Dexter would be a moderate guy, but I don't think he would break much due to my own experiences as I've gotten older, you lose muscle you don't get back having long breaks when your getting older, to hold that body mass, i don't think he could go off, I would think he would need to almost cruise to maintain it, but no one would know he could abuse same as the others.
-

Lol... to "almost cruise"? You don't know much about this eh? Most guys who are not even on a national level that I know basically never go completely off, well these who strive to take it to another level. Dex is a grown man, his body needs test anyway, so conctant flow of it would be nothing surprising.
What Id like to know is exact timings/dosages/combos. He certainly has a good grip of how to do it and other guys who are older but still in great shape. That or just simply genetics of gods...

Oh brother ::) the majority of your posts are about how negative Phil is, sorry he didn't sign an autograph pic for u, or take a pic for u at the expos

Dexter isn't doing anything different than the majority of pros, he's just one of the lucky ones that aren't getting the crazy sides like others. That's all genetics right there
-

No actually I am a Phil supporter. I changed my mind about him after meeting him. I think he needs to do better if he wants to take things to the next level. I think he definitely has what it takes but he won't do it if he doesn't improve his attitude
-
2) As much as Dexter is a great bodybuilder, its sad that someone who is close to 50 years old is the second best in the world
Why do you find it Sad That a man in his 40's is so Good.
I see it Happening more & more as we have a ageing population.
Ronnie went into his 40's. Phil is mid to late 30's.
Kia Greene late 30's ?
Al Beckles 40's & 50's.
Toney Freeman 40's.
Plus countless others.
It's Great that older men can compete & win as they age.
Cutler same mid to late 30's.
The youngsters need to step up. ;)
-
::) Bantamweight to heavyweight doesn't exactly scream moderation
In comparison to his contemporaries, I think it does. He's put on size gradually and not at the expense of having an excellent physique. A lot of other guys would look better if they didn't put on as much mass as they could as fast as they could.
-

He is iconic in bodybuilding. His record at the ASC is amazing; only one Sandow but that's more than Flex, Levrone and many other greats. Add in his longevity and consistency and he is up there with best of all time.
Never ruined his shape either which deserves as much credit as every other achievement.

At 46 giving out is not like a 28 year.old burning out. At 46 he should be well past it.

If you saw my posts I said I don't think he's a bad guy I think the opposite. I have just seen this same story over and over again with those who let their insecurities get the best of them. I have said I think he could go past bodybuilding
I find this situation interesting and apparently so do other people since there's a thread on here weekly about the things I've said. He has a lot of potential I would hate to see him waste it
A real supporter calls out the bullshit and says you need to do better rather than kissing ass

You also forgot no torn muscles. The only thing that is bad is calves when compared to an otherwise fantastic physique (no homo).

Damn a lot of Get biggers all over Dexter's Nuts.
Look at what has become of every other guy from the 2000s era. This is the only top guy that you will be able to look back on from that era(IF pro bodybuilding moves toward the classic judging criteria) and not laugh someday.

Most of the people who start negative threads on him don't claim to be supporters, though. They say they hate him.
Look, you obviously don't have to prove anything to me, but the statement just struck me as odd since I haven't seen you write anything vaguely positive about him. It's one thing to call out someone's bullshit, but your posts seemt to be critical of almost everything about him and they are frequent, to the point that I've actually registered it. You have the right not to like anyone you don't like, and I would never challenge that. I just don't get how saying exclusively negative stuff about every aspect of someone = supporter.

I started out on here saying positive things like how articulate and personable he is in person. I have also said he's probably too smart to be a bodybuilder and will not have to peddle supplements once he's done.
He's got a nice looking face and dresses well. I have said nice things about him
I don't care for his physique but that's just a personal preference because he's too poofy for my tastes.
His current behavior on social media is indicative of narcissism, a very fragile ego and he comes Across as quite insecure. Those things combined with great success usually leads to a downfall. It happens over and over again. As someone who thinks he can take it to the next level I would like to see him do better

Dexter has incredible genetics in that he has been abusing steroids, GH etc for over 25 years and is showing few signs of physique regression or receptor burnout

You also forgot no torn muscles. The only thing that is bad is calves when compared to an otherwise fantastic physique (no homo).
I remember reading dex say years ago that if he felt a niggle/small pain he would take the day or a few days off gym.
Assuming he was telling truth id say that helped a lot. Im so neurotic i have trained with pneumonia, a broken foot, torn muscles, sciatica etc. Yes i trained with pneumonia. Went to work went out etc til it got into my blood and i nearly died. That sort of balanced view is lacking in a lot of us but id say that would be a major part in longevity. Taking it easy when you dont feel right.

Dexter was the most dense bodybuilder on that Olympia stage against a bunch of bloat.

Out of all the piles of shit that are shoveled onto the Olympia stage, Dexter is the pile of shit that I'd most want to look like (physique wise).
