For a period his posts were decent. But recently he's become very infantile in his attitude. I don't know if the facade dropped.or something changesd.

I would like to think they are a thing of the past. I have not had a drink for almost 11 months now. I will wait until it has been a full year, and then try my luck at a few drinks, 1 day a week. Many people on here tell me I shouldnt do it, but it is something I have to find out on my own.

I knew he said he was going to start drinking again but only on Sundays for football or something like that but I didn't know when :-\
...and again I hope he hasn't started again
...I need to keep three putts to nill this Saturday!
-
That rationale is exactly why I am going to try. Everyone is different.
If I can have some drinks during football on sundays, and stay away for the rest of the week, the I will call that a victory.
I know it can be done.
22 years is a great accomplishment. There is indeed zero hope that I will go 22 years without drinking, as I plan to begin drinking in moderation (1 day a week) when I hit the 1 year mark. Alcohol is a fine, when it is respected.

Imagine being so fucking pathetic and mentally owned by Shizzo that you set your Outlook calendar to remind you that he may or may not take a drink, so that you can start a shitty attention whoring thread about it.

There are some alcohol programs that teach people how to drink moderately (called Moderation Management). It is definitely an approach used in the substance abuse treatment field.
Obviously it does not apply to every person, and whether or not shizzo can do it is to be determined. But based on his recent behavior, I would not be surprised if he went back to drinking a lot. I hope now.

I feel loneliness and boredom have him on the drink
Id imagine that loneliness and boredom can be triggers for returning to drinking, especially the lonely part. I mean, you can always fill your time, and not be bored, but it doesn't mean you won't feel a sense of loneliness. While moderation management may work for some people, Id suspect that it may not work for the majority of people with a substance abuse issue.
Interesting thing is that when youre treating someone with a sexual addiction, you dont completely eliminate them from having sex. That's unrealistic. You teach them how to have healthy, moderate sex (this will vary depending on the person), so it doesn't consume their life, and interfere with their daily function. If it can work for sex addiction, perhaps it can also work with alcohol abuse.

SF wouldnt alcohol be difficult because it's a chemical addiction, or is the school of thought in teaching the moderation approach that not everyone has the same level/type of addiction.
What is the success rate with this type of program, how many former alcoholics can realistically control their consumption?

Alcohol is mostly a psychological dependence; nicotine, heroine etc are physical dependencies where there are actual physical withdrawals leading to sickness/ physical symptoms.
Addiction is hard to understand if you've never had it or dealt with someone with it. Imagine wanting to die because you can't get more of what you want - like a person drowning wanting a breath of air. That's addiction. They'd rather die quickly than deal with pain of keeping on gasping for that next breath.

Many specialists consider sexual addiction a chemical addiction/dependency.
And, yes, not everyone has the same level of addiction. In AA you have to be totally substance free. But there are different levels of addiction and some people may have better responses in terms of managing their dependence.
I dont know the success rate of such programs.

As a disclaimer not trying to argue with you when I ask these questions I'm just trying to become more informed.
I understand the chemical release with sex addiction but I also thought there wasn't a concensus opinion among professionals that sex addiction is indeed a "true/real" addiction, in the same way drugs/alcohol are.
As this thread is about Shizzo wouldn't it be safe to assume, based on his account of previous abuse and addiction, that consumption in moderation is out of the question? What would be the determining factor that someone's addiction could be controlled (If an individual was a textbook alcoholic, moderation wouldn't seem like an option as they would lack self control)?
Thanks
-

I'm missing your point bro; obviously heroin, meth, coke, crack, et.. are harder drugs to quit with harsher withdrawal symptoms. But even eliminating something as simple as caffeine consumption will lead to withdrawal side effects (minimal in comparison).
Is your point alcohol addiction isn't the same as hard drugs?
* I'm not trolling either.

I am not an expert in sexual addiction, so I do not know what the general consensus is among specialists. But you cannot be currently diagnosed with a sexual addiction. It appears there is some split in the field.
As for substance use, Id agree that most consider it a chemical dependency; however, I am sure there are a wide variety of opinions regarding how much weight is given to the chemical "piece" of addiction. Its a piece of the puzzle, but only one piece. There are obviously other factors involved.
What would be the determining factor that someone's addiction could be controlled (If an individual was a textbook alcoholic, moderation wouldn't seem like an option as they would lack self control)?
Well, its hard to tell, since many alcoholics truly never tried moderation. I mean, it may have started off like that, but its not a full blown addiction, thus moderation was never really taken into consideration. There is not ONE determining factor that would decide if it could be controlled. It would most likely be a variety of factors that would determine if someone's addiction could be controlled.
The thing is, could they learn to have self-control regarding their alcohol use? Maybe they were never taught the skills to lead a moderate lifestyle.

Once one becomes well versed in the art of the glittery thong, one has obtained vast knowledge, which supersedes all other academic endeavors. I say, "A thong, a schmoe, a weight bench and a protein shake; what else does a man need to be happy?"

Smoking is often deemed harder to quit than heroine.
Obviously, this is often due to the legal repercussions of heroine.
3. Cigarettes. In ratings by cocaine and alcohol addicts, smoking is regularly cited as the more difficult drug to quit, generally on par with or more difficult than heroin. Nonetheless, more than 40 million living Americans have quit smoking. While impressive, this still only represents about half of all of those ever addicted to cigarettes - although a higher percentage of those in higher socioeconomic groups have quit. When I speak to recovering people at addiction conferences I ask, "What is the toughest drug to quit?" By acclimation, the audience shouts out, "cigarettes" or "smoking." I then ask, "How many people in this room have been addicted to cigarettes but are now off them?" Half to two-thirds - often hundreds of people - in the room raise their hands. "Wow," I enthuse. "And how many have used any kind of therapy - medical or a support group - to quit?" Never have more than a small handful done so.

Lol I was going to mention cigarettes too. I've know various addicts hooked on different and/or multiple substances and they all say smoking is the toughest to stop.

Never meant to, and didn't know I was addicted. Had to do thirty days in county - first night was excruciating, blurred my vision. Next day felt like I was recovering from a head injury; did the math later.

Got a whole different take on addiction and "disease," though. Doesn't always mesh with the experts, especially AA nazis (present company excluded, always).

Coffee was just a routine (all day, every day - city job), and then Diet Coke in between, at night. Swear, I didn't even know it was a thing. No clue one could get physically addicted to caffeine.
Just no-calorie fluids to keep hunger at bay, then they took it away ...

There's no such thing as the disease of alcoholism. It's bullshit. There's only an individual's choice to get roaring drunk on a regular basis. Having another drink is a choice. If Shizzo only has 1 beer left and all the liquor stores are closed, and he drinks the beer, and then there is no more alcohol available, does he die? Sadly, no. He doesn't have to keep drinking after having one beer.
In b4 'my third cousin died from DTs.' No he didn't, hillbilly. And even if he did he died from chemical dependency withdrawals, which I'll concede do exist for some, maybe. Or from a pickled liver, etc, that came from drinking too much. Not from 'alcoholism,' as if he had no choice because he had a disease. He didn't have a disease. He chose to drink too damn much. Choosing to do something unhealthy, on purpose, isn't a disease. Stop excusing people from their actions.
I was semi-serious when I told Shaun to buy a backhoe if wants to quit drinking. Just find some activity other than sitting around with nothing better to do than get ratassed. Next thing you know you'll be drinking in moderation. Shit, if you've got nothing that interests you enough to be sober for it then you're one boring mofo.

Addiction is a serious disease and it's scientifically proven (http://www.addictionsandrecovery.org/is-addiction-a-disease.htm). Different genes express themselves when one consumes alcohol and their interplay make it so some people cannot control their drinking.
-
Shizzo reminds me of the redneck Richard on Howard Stern.
-
If you have to control your drinking, that means it`s out of control.
If your a drunk, you shouldn`t drink if sobriety means anything to you.

Sure. People get addicted to things and then un-addicted if they really want to. I'm not saying it's easy for them but it's a choice, unlike an actual disease which you can't choose to be rid of.
Horseshit on the can't control thing. Won't control is what it is. How many cc of alcohol exactly before the afflicted is no longer responsible for his own actions? And is he still accountable for things like deciding to drive drunk but somehow not responsible for deciding to drink more? What about a kebab? Is he responsible for the calories in it?

Valid point. We've labeled alcoholism a disease, but any actions that are a result of that disease, you referenced driving but it could be hate slurs or physical abuse or anything, are the fault of the individual who is out of control.
Thats an interesting observation.

Ok, again with the fat remarks. Others say she is good looking, you say she is a cow. Someone is lying. Someone please send me a pic via PM and I will out the liar. (And of course no matter what she looks like I am going to pop an end over end load over it)
-
on a scale of 1 to rehab,...how loaded do you think shizzo is at the moment?
-
There are some alcohol programs that teach people how to drink moderately (called Moderation Management). It is definitely an approach used in the substance abuse treatment field.
Obviously it does not apply to every person, and whether or not shizzo can do it is to be determined. But based on his recent behavior, I would not be surprised if he went back to drinking a lot. I hope now.
Some folks are "periodic drunks" whereas they can go a long time between benders and are even able to drink moderately on occasion. Personally, I don't believe AA is the answer for everyone. Someone I know is addicted to NA meetings, which she attends several times a week. If it works than all is good. In her case, she considers herself clean despite the fact that she has prescriptions for various mood altering drugs, including morphine. To me, this isn't clean.
Folks who exhibit addictive behaviors can become addicted to a variety of things, including bodybuilding, running, eating, etc.
-
Prime is not a drunk. Just an old dude on a forum with a bunch of young psychos ;D ;D Dude is 70 years old. He's older than my pops. :o :o ;D ;D
Exactly! What many folks here don't get is that variety is good. Certainly a 71 year old like myself is going to have a different perspective on things than people a generation or more younger do. It is just one way of looking at things and it should not be taken as being better or worse. I learn a lot from you "psychos" ;) and I appreciate this. However, this doesn't mean I want to be where you are. There is no intention of me trying to recapture my youth or be like others here.

Is Walter really joon?
I doubt it. Junior has a sense of humor and he doesn't focus on everything and everyone being gay.
-
I'm missing your point bro; obviously heroin, meth, coke, crack, et.. are harder drugs to quit with harsher withdrawal symptoms. But even eliminating something as simple as caffeine consumption will lead to withdrawal side effects (minimal in comparison).
Is your point alcohol addiction isn't the same as hard drugs?
* I'm not trolling either.
I am 2 pages behind but ok here goes...
Take a really addictive drug. Coke, mephedrone, crystal meth... the comedown is so bad you want to die/the world is ending. Heroin/opiates you feel pain for the first time in an age (even the merest pain/ache will feel bad cos you've numbed system - I'm going on word of someone who works in the area nothing personal). Alcohol is different... I drink a fair bit... but I had to work 2 days non stop a month or so ago and couldn't sleep/drink/anything. I had no withdrawal, no lust for alcohol. I have taken other things where the comedown makes you suicidal unless you get more - that is physical. Your body and mind are saying I fucking need this. Alcohol is just your brain saying out of habit "take me cos I will do this for you (sleep, relax, make you better at cobversation/whatever your excuse is)."
-
Valid point. We've labeled alcoholism a disease, but any actions that are a result of that disease, you referenced driving but it could be hate slurs or physical abuse or anything, are the fault of the individual who is out of control.
Thats an interesting observation.
Its really not. People ARE responsible for their drinking, but that doesn't mean we can't seek to understand the underlying afflictions of what causes someone to drink. In other words, there has to be a balance between holding the individual responsible for their actions, while displaying understanding and empathy for whatever factors are causing them to drink. You can easily look at drinking as a disease (if you choose to) while still holding the individual responsible for their actions. Its a balancing act.
The fact that drinking may classify as a disease does not alleviate an individuals responsibility. No good therapist would say that.
-
LOL Apparently I'm the only mod around here with any power according to you. I guess that means I control your destiny here on Getbig ;)
The possibilities of this are exciting to contemplate.

I've never tried herion or cocaine, but I was a heavy smoker from age 18 to 29 (three packs a day heavy). Quitting smoking was hard as heck. There are both physical and mental withdrawal symptoms. I'm a control freak. This was the onetime it was an advantage. I convinced myself that I'd let cigarettes gain control of me, using the withdrawal symptoms as fuel for this notion. Once I chose to quit, it worked and I have never smoked since.
-
Lol I was going to mention cigarettes too. I've know various addicts hooked on different and/or multiple substances and they all say smoking is the toughest to stop.
Hahaha every time I eliminate caffeine from my life (and getting past the migraine ) I swear I'll never use it again. Somehow I always end up using caffeine... :-[
Incidentally, according to Edgar Casey, coffee by itself in moderation is healthy as long as there are no additives, such as cream and sugar.

Eliminating caffeine is harder than you know. Many foods have caffeine, chocolate for one. Did you know that tea is higher in caffeine than coffee?
-
Tried it a few times, gave me a headache like a sinus infection. I got right back on the caffeine the next day
I swear, this is the first response I have ever read from this poster that wasn't laced with hate.

I dont know about where you live but here a lot of people start heroin aged 11-13 when they act as runnners for dealers to get money/status... that not only adds addiction but a financial resource. When you cant get work cos your veins have collapsed and cheeks are drawn in what do you revert to?

Diet Coke, or for that matter diet anything, meaning it has a sugar substitute as opposed to the real thing is very suspicious. There are people who are addicted to diet drinks who somehow become obese. We've all seen them.

The body confuses synthetic sugars with real sugar so while you won't get the 4 calories per gram of sugar you do get the insulin spike. That is from what I last read on issue.
You also have to consider that fatsos do anything to minimise their image as fatsos - ie diet coke with supersized meal. Therefore their health record on diet sodas can't be counted accurately.

I never thought of this, but it makes sense. It is rare that I have a soda of any kind. When I do, like today at a meeting, I stick to the real stuff with real sugar....Sprite with 35 grams of sugar. Boy, did it make me belch. ;D

Shaun, please find a program and attend it regularly. Work it daily. Be all about it all the time for as long as it takes. Also don't go the store, purchase alcoholic beverages, bring them home, and consume them.

It definitely appears that you are right about the tea verses coffee thing. That's what happens when one doesn't confirm what they've been told, we might be wrong. ;D I'm lucky, caffeine doesn't seem to bother me at all, but then I am not one of those folks that goes for a 4 or 5 shot latte. Soda pop is not something I drink very often.

When you locate the gaze of Michelangelo's Bacchus, you find he's looking at you through the handle of the cup. So it's as if he's playfully offering you a drink but you're also viewing one another through the portal that mediates your interaction. I thought that was a nice touch.

I am pointing out memorable threads that are actually entertaining, most of which I was involved in. These days, anything passes as a thread.
