Born in 1970. Came of age in the glorious '80s.

Wish I could go back and remain in that decade.

The chicks were hottest then, too.

thank you.   I did the Canadians in 1991, 1995, 2001, 2005 and 2007.   never competed often enough to get my face known, or to figure out how to peak for a show.   here is a pic from my last contest in 2007   wt - 234  ht - 5'9''

Those were good times following bodybuilding.  And then things changed.  Flipping through a bodybuilding magazine in the early 90's, the first bodybuilder that I noticed that started taking things to a new level was Mohammed Benaziza, and then the rest of the competitors followed, and now the majority look like pregnant hippos.

I dont  know where he recruited from but at that time and area, where MMI shop was,  I remember there used to be a ton of strip bars. Used to try to sneak in before hitting legal age.  ;D

:D You're a good man Hazbin. Appreciate the positive words. Those barely 18 inch arms and 35 inch waist @218-220 derailed my bodybuilding dreams.  It was tough to win almost every power meet I entered and barely crack the top-6 in my bodybuilding shows.

Back in those days there were 4-5 cars that I could lift effortlessly. The 1984 Honda Civic was my favorite.

And best of all, no cell phones.

As a kid, you could be gone all day, nobody worried. You played outside all day, went back for supper then went back out until bed time.

None of us were fat either!

When I see pics of 80s women they are so incredibly hot compared to today.
Dunno what happened.
Maybe it's the anti-pregnancy pills or hormones in drinking water idk.
Today's women look boring in comparison.

I'm glad most women remove all the hair now. Even back then a hairy bush never looked good.

And back then, white girls didn't have the asses like they do now. They were all flat as a pancake. The 80's were more about big tits than big asses.

you got that right ritch kids today cannot even take themselves away from there cellphones or ipads long enough to play outside.

and yes i remember those days in the summer being outside all day . i was lucky to live in  a rural setting for a few years.

Don't know about their asses, but women's breasts are definitely bigger now than they've ever been.  Selective breeding or estrogenic compounds in the water and food?  Probably both.

So true.  Outside all day was definitely the way.

I always boot the kids outside if the weather is good when they have friends over.

But, I can easily admit if I had something as cool as an iPad and the video games were better when I was a kid, it would have kept me inside a bit more.  It's hypocritical to think otherwise.

I was in college in the late 70's and early 80's. Women dressed fine for college. So many wore heels and skirts.  They also wore heels and tight jeans. I was just by a division I school Rutgers and all the women were dressed like homeless people. Either pajama bottoms or dirty looking jeans with a crappy tee shirt and dirty sneakers. Their hair looked like they woke up with it.

Kids play outside lots today.  Most of the problems are from parents whose heads are up their asses.  On welfare, lazy single moms, divorced, selfish, not paying attention to their kids, on their own phones all the time.  General fuckups.

I graduated high school in the mid 80's.   I remember as a kid in school, at most there would be one fat kid in class.  That was about it.   Back then, we didn't have fast food restaurants in close proximity to schools like they do now.  No wonder so many kids these days are obese.  Majority are hooked on processed crap by the time they even get into high school.  It's crazy.

Not sure....I ate salami/cheese on wonder bread, those disgusting hostess fruit pies which were crisco and sugar, and some other snack almost every day for lunch and I was ripped.

Much more entertainment options result in much more sedentary kids.  You can watch cartoons on Netflix or YouTube all day long.  Video games out the wazoo.  And while sitting there they are snacking.  And many are on psych meds which screw up their metabolism further.

I ate a ton of crap as a kid but we almost never ate out.  Some McDonalds here and there but not like today where it is incredibly cheap and omnipresent.  Couple this with awful parents usually fat and on depression meds themselves always bringing huge amounts of sweets into the house.  Tvs and tablets and computers in bedrooms.  Parents allowing kids to vegetate and graze.

'86 here. We had every fastfood establishment you could imagine within the 30-45 minute to-and-fro walking distance lunchtime allowed. Several fatties, but only enough that you could still bully them in good conscience.

Seen it happen pretty quickly in real life to some young kids.  In 6-18 months, eating crap, lotsa fast food, chips, cookies, not going outside playing games and watching too much tv.  Got sloppy fat 20-30 lbs overweight.

Similarly, I saw it reverse itself in the same kids in 6-12 months once situation changed for the kids.

Exactly - within a mile of each other in Central NJ, we had:  Roy Rogers / McDonalds / Burger King / Arby's / Wendy's / Stewart's (hot dogs) and two kick ass NJ diners, as well as a couple pizza places.

When I went to my 25 year high school reunion it was interesting to see that quite a few of the skinny guys in school filled out considerably and several are quite buff now.  And conversely, quite a few of the fatties got slimmer.  I think some went on some serious dieting prior to the reunion.  A third of my graduating class that was at the 25 year reunion was divorced at least once.

My senior year of high school was 83/84

Bob Paris was the NPC National winner in 1983 and Jeff King was the AAU winner

I think both were ~ 23 at the time

naturally...I assumed I would look like they did by the time I reached that age... ???

things weren't better back then, the only difference is you were younger, healthier, and probably less jaded

why would you miss the video store today when there is netflix, on demand, or you could just download a torrent?

youtube allows you to see any music video you want whenever you want, rather than waiting for it on mtv

the only thing that looked better about women back then is they didn't have tattoos, other than that they're the same

movies and music were better then, but the net today allows us to relive that stuff whenever we want

the only thing i miss from the 80's is bodybuilding, our sport will never be that good again and you can't just rewatch a contest like you can a movie or music you liked from that decade

My senior year of high school was 83/84

Bob Paris was the NPC National winner in 1983 and Jeff King was the AAU winner

I think both were ~ 23 at the time

naturally...I assumed I would look like they did by the time I reached that age... ???

watch mike christian in 1st video he was pissed basically walked away off stage until they called him back he hit crab shot and left again,,gaspari was pissed too he looks like he should have been place ahead of mendenhall...

Things like YT, Netflix just make you not appreciate video's/movies as much. Before, a given show played once a week, one time slot. If you missed it, tough shit unless you or someone else recorded it with the VCR.

There was something about going to take a piss during commercials, rushing to get back to watch the rest of your show that just made it so much more fun.

I loved the example of going to a video store! I was always there renting games and hoping to rent the new releases. As shitty as it was to have to bring them back if not renting others, the whole experience was so much more exciting. Also, having the game for just a few days made you play non stop wanting finish it.

And did women act like such cum dumpsters back then? Sure some or them, but now it's soooo overdone, no taboo's exist no more, everything is in the open. It's not like it was, but you're right we were much less jaded back then and new to the world in general.

I'm not a huge fan of Gaspari but he definitely should have beaten Mendenhall. He looked great in that show and he was only 20 years old.

Gaspari vs Mendenhall is like poor structure vs great structure. Matt had so much potential, not sure what was holding him other than his cocaine issues.

Was a kid in the 80ies but the times seemed more upbeat and people appeared to be wealthier - guessing from what I experienced around my friends' families.
The 80ies seemed to be thriving with the power/crispness of the 70ies and the more hedonistic, techy and ultimately nihilistic coming ages.
Great times - peak times of the west.

Btw, neck and forearm people used to swell uncontrollably in said decade  :D

Definitely Matt had a much better structure. It's really amazing how far Gaspari got considering. By all accounts, he was an insanely driven, disciplined and intense individual.

Bodybuilding suffers from the same fate as porn.  It's a visual sport and the Internet has made visual depictions cheap and immediately available.  The magic is pretty much gone when you have an unlimited library available instantly on demand.

Add to that the second punch of all the drug info being so widely disseminated and it greatly loses its appeal.

We should be very very happy on some levels for our tremendous overabundance, but the price we paid is the loss of innocence.

Agree, and this has been the fate of many things that were somewhat special back in the day(music & games come to mind).
There's too much "material" out there to have a healthy, normal sized mainstream bubble watering the markets.

On the other hand, if you're a gourmet and pick the best raisins it's still great and maybe there's more quality out there than ever before.

These are actually some very insightful comments. Make you think.

But at the end of the day we've evolved into miserable, despicable creatures destroying our culture and the planet with each passing day and will eventually come to a horrific, violent and bloody end.

But at least we produced an Arnold.

we sound like our parents and grandparents who we have become ie, "I don't like what the kids do, listen to, who they hang out with, how they are lazy etc etc etc.

Parents and grandparents used to say the same shit about us when we were done, and the same shit was said about all of them when they were young(remember how parents lost their fucking minds when the beatles, elvis, ect came out)

people haven't changed the difference is now we have the internet to see people for what they really are, people have always been self absorbed and conceited the selfies of today just make it more obvious

if people are more rude that's the generation that grew up in the 70's and 80's fault for not raising their kids properly

you probably didn't notice or care back then, heck you might have been rude yourself ignorance is bliss

everybody thinks they will be a star today because the internet makes it easier to be a star, this isn't the first generation that preferred being a rich celebrity over working a regular job

if youtube, social media, and any technology of today existed 30 years ago it would've been no different than now

Nope. People have changed. You may blame their parents for their lack of manners and rudeness but being more rude and impolite is a change. Who you blame is a separate issue. But the fact is that people are different.

I was just watching an old clip on PBS on Babe Ruth and they had a reporter standing in front of the stadium doing some commentary. It suddenly dawned on my that all the people in the background are dressed in suits and ties and women wearing ankle length dresses. And no one is clowning around and making faces and trying to get on camera.

Someone here said that every generation considers twenty years ago the good old days. Well, I was born in 1960 and lived through those years. By the time I was 8 years old I was very aware of the Vietnam war and the hippies movement. During the 1980s I never looked fondly  back at the 60's and 70's. In fact, I trace all social ills to the cultural revolution of the late sixties/early seventies.

I was glad to see the 70s end and the"malaise" of the Carter administration. When Reagan came in there was a whole different mood in the country. Hope, the dawning of the new age, we were on top again.

Then the 1990s with rap and the Thug life gangsta culture that all the youth wanted to emulate. Decent girls from decent families now falling for the nigs from the inner city and the wigger wannabes both out of rebellion and excitement.

I can remember overhearing my sister and her friends in her bedroom talking about one them that just had her first kiss. She was sixteen. Laughing and making jokes about her "sweet sixteen" kiss.

First kiss at sixteen. LOL. Now it's giving your first blow job at 12 and getting finger banged in the bushes.

I don't know how old you are but I've live through these decades and have seen the changes. And if you think people today are more decent, honest, civil and considerate you just haven't been paying attention or are simply too young to know.

And with exception of electronics, they are also way, way less educated and informed. There whole life literally revolves around their cell phone.

Culture has taken a very narcissistic turn in the last 10 years.  People see the YouTube Facebook Instagram shenanigans and take it as validation of their own poor behavior.  We also have pulled back the curtain on many things exposing ugly truths without any filtering to kids whose parents take no part in curating or shepherding their development.  Societal structure is breaking down along with the structure of the family.

Is it too late to go back?  Probably.  Even if it were possible it will mean tremendous pain and suffering for all, not just the lazy undisciplined addicted crass slobs on the dole whose numbers have been growing exponentially.

Gary Taylor was a beast. 6'0" and between 285 and 295 (during his strongman days) with very little fat. He was a bodybuilder before becoming an Olympic weightlifter (900 pound deadlift and squat and over 500 pound bench press) and eventual World's strongest man (1991-1997). He unfortunately had both his knees crushed while flipping a 1000 pound tire in a comeback competition in 1997, which forced him into retirement. He won WSM in 1993 and came close in 1991 and would have in 1995 if it wasn't for the last event where he couldn't reach the top of the wall to set a very light (for his standards) object on. It made him slip all the way to 5th or 6th place overall.
