Title: Remember Luiz FREITAS
Post by: Nether Animal on April 09, 2016, 04:16:26 PM
Most should remember him from the '88 Olympia video battle for gold. He wasn't around for very long. He had really strong legs by 80s standards, but kind of a wide waist. Flawed, but powerful physique

Compared to today's standards... that is not a wide waist at all.

Wasn't he a veggie like Brisbois?

Of course! The guy had a killer physique. The 'do was a bit much (think Yates in his initial O appearances). Like, a bit too feathered and "fluffy".

But, yeah, amazing build.

Hope he's well.

Saw him many times at Venice bitd. He went to Chiro school when he quit competing but for some reason I don't know if he followed thru

I could be wrong but my failing memory tells me that Sean Jenkins around that time also went to Chiro school

he failed the drug test at the world championships.  won it the next year and was promoted as a drug free champion. then he was caught with a whole apartment full of steroids. for some reason I think his mother helped with the distribution.

I remember hearing something like that too

His mother received the steroids for him, and they grabbed up him, her, and a few others. They grabbed him up at the Arnold Classic of all places. He wound up getting probation and community service.

i don't do drugs but every once in a while it strikes me how stupid it is that a grown adult can't choose to take steroids if they want to. This country is so corrupt. Why then can people smoke?  Drink?  Hypocrites.

Haha...no one cared about this guy. We all thought he was some type of model just for the covers...not a real bodybuilder. Now...years later someone is posting his pic talking about him...here's your answer...NO ONE CARED THEN...NO ONE CARES NOW!

I remember Weider making a big push into taking a boatload of his supplements and claiming the guys could look better natural. Luis was one of the poster boys for this claiming he was clean the following year at the Worlds while looking the same if not better.

No Wes...just because you idolized him...same small structure unable to break 180lbs. When Zane won the Olympia people couldn't understand it. Its like Ronnie losing to Steve Brisbois. 2016 Katsumi Kitamura winning the Olympia? Same reaction when Zane did. Now...maybe you upstate NYérs like Zane because you wear coats 10 months outta the year and those big Triple Fat Down Coats make you look like you have an extra 50lbs but no one cared for Zane in the Warmer more important states.

So you believe that Zane had a better more complete body than Robby? BAAAAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAA

Didn't Zane beat Tom Platz? C'mon. They were looking for a clean cut guy. When Zane became Mr. Olympia sales plummeted....so Arnold came back in 1980 and won.

Off the top of my head wasn't Mentzer in one of those contests?

As you know it`s a subjective sport.

Zane looked sleek and lithe next to a bloated Mentzer and Robbie had zero leg definition/seperation in almost every show he ever entered.

ZANE tried to come in heavier during some of his last Os, and I dind't like his look as much.

Plus, his obliques looked overdeveloped and it thickened his waist a bit. Still looks awesome, but I like late 60s - early 70s Zane the best.

After watching the 1980 Mr.O video I thought Zane in second would not have been wrong, and he was undersized from being in an accident. His structure was better than everyone there but Arnold. Mentzer was too blocky, him and Zane could switch for 2 and 3 but Zane being at his normal size would easily beat Mentzer.

FALLS, I can't argue about Zane's popularity nor physical condition back in the day but it is apparent that you were not present back then when the popularity of bodybuilding was just getting underway.

But I can honestly say that if there was a popularity list back then, ZANE would definitely be ranked within the top 5 - 10% and possibly even higher.

And I think I've told you also damn interesting stories about Frank and Christine a good while back so I'll end this here with a hearty ... "Be Positive!" (or something like that!).

WES, Good job on standing up for the elderly guys out thar!!!

So you know I wasn't around back then...lol. OK...so the hippies in Northern part of the state loved him. Palm Springs loved him...along with his flotation/meditation tanks...lol....OK..you win.

When Zane won it was a complete shock. Why? Because the Olympia was being dominated by bigger guys...namely Arnold. Weider was in a state of panic to find a golden boy he could market. Zane did nothing for marketing or pulling in money. After 1980 Weider did away with the "good ol" boys.  When I tell you that people in the gym couldn't believe Zane had won his first Olympia, its the truth. You tell me how Zane beat Robby? C'mon...it was a mater of marketing, it still is and Robby is not marketable BUT he did look better than Zane.

Ok, I guess its time for your mid-afternoon nap so I"ll shut up. Have a great one Stunt!
