Title: Is the ps4 worth getting?
Post by: The Wizard of Truth on June 29, 2016, 03:26:19 PM

Probably need to upgrade your TV if u get the PS4.5
To get the 4K resolution, which is the biggest asset of the PS4.5,you need a TV that supports 4k resolution
A 55 " 4k TV is around $2200....and a 65" around $3300 .....and up.....if you want the real 4K gaming experience  ::)

I wouldn't worry about the 4.5 for games (yet), but if you do 4K netflix, go ahead.

I like it better than my Xbox One. (I actually traded in my Xbone for a 3DS XL)

I think the lack of content could have been a factor.

I prefer samsung TVs as well, but did get a Bravia as an additional when they threw in a PS3 with the purchase.  It's been awesome.

Sony bravias are great too, built like a brick shithouse.
Lack of content is definitely a factor. Plus, right now, you have to buy discs. I refused to go back to buying discs. Stream content sucks, I think Netflix has something around 4 4K movies.
I haven't made the jump to 4K yet, my next will be though just to future proof. I guess the big draw right now is gamers.

Make no mistake though, pc massacres all the consoles put together, these days you can have it in a small box next to your tv, with a ui that you can control with your gamepad.Games look better, are cheaper, can all be stored on a hard drive as big as you want.

But do you still have to spend a small fortune to get a decent pc that will run the latest games? Can it be made easy enough so the bairns can play it easily without having to ask to change game ect

Yes, it's a piece of piss these days, you can have your pc boot in to steam big picture mode which looks just like a ps4 or xb1 interface, no discs needed, all games installed and run from hard drive.can pick between 360, PS3, ps4, xb1 controllers etc.You can build a pc that runs everything for just slightly more than ps4 launch price, then the games on PC are FAR cheaper for same game, ps4 games can stay same price for years, PC a few months later the price can have halved or more, or you could use torrents to "trial" full version games....Then because your PC is plugged in to your tv you can run kodi which is also the best media centre available.

Stream big mode mode sucks and you still need a keyboard and mouse sometimes. Also at launch the games prices are the same, but with a disc you can sell it after the fact and get some money back.

Works fine, you can actually have your pc boot in to kodi, have you movies, tv shows, music etc  all controlled by a remote or gamepad, have a games icon which launches steam big picture mode , launch your games from there, use steam in built web browser, when your done it auto switches back to kodi.Seamless.

Games never run correctly on PCs no matter how powerful.  Always glitches and shut downs and annoyances.  The gameplay always feels jerky and not smooth or refined compared to a console even with the same games.

I like PC gaming, but its just not worth the frustration all the time.

Used to like PC, but now Xbox. PCs are better for fps. Consoles are more convenient, and more of a relaxing pursuit in front of a big screen TV. In general, although this may change soon, everyone tend to be on an even keel with consoles.

Quake 1 was pure CPU until GLQuake came out.

I know, because mistakes were made on my part, too - at that time I saved up $600 to upgrade my pc and instead of going with a Pentium 166, I went with the cheaper, IBM 686-166.

A big mistake - as the floating point of those processors was fucking useless compared to the p166 and I paid with shitty performance in Quake.

I then tried to buy more video ram for my video card - again, mistakes were made, that wasn't the problem.

Wasn't until I got a voodoo3 that things got good.

Adonis's words are not fully accurate - if you have a powerful pc, your time spent fiddling with games or having problems with them is pretty much zero (buy on steam, run, play), but then, what would you expect when you have a 700US video card in your system?  In fact, the more you spend, the less trouble you will have - but consoles will only give you 60fps max.

Also, citing the versions on consoles being better is only exposing your lack of experience with pc gaming.  PC Gamers, experienced PC gamers know that if the game is cross platform, the PC version will invariably be a lazily conceived piece of shit.  Don't even go there.

I would suggest those of you with PS4s try PSVR somewhere, when it comes out.  I have a HTC Vive and it is a better gaming experience than anything I have ever experienced.  By a long long way.  The Vive, with its ability to move around a room and interact with shit is really the king at the moment, but the PSVR will be a fair bit cheaper for those of you who already have the console.

Be skeptical about VR - because it'll only make the rebuttal when you actually try it, more amusing.

What if you need a new PC and you could just add some extra $200 for a decent graphic card? Can you even buy something decent for that price? Or you still need a lot of PC power and it gets expensive as hell?

By decent I mean something that would play games with the same fps and resolution as their consoles counterpart.

But that was 6 years ago. And the games were Resident evil 5, Devil may cry, Dead space. Basically, games that were being released in the ps3 too at that time.

Even back then $100 was not good enough.

Regardless, PCs always need upgrades.  Consoles let you go 5+ years now without doing that.

Hacker community is much worse on PCs too.

All depends on preference and what you're willing to deal with.

All offer fantastic gaming experiences.

I found an old CD that I had with the emulator, plus a ton of ROMs for games like Berzerk, Robotron, Venture, etc....but it's not working now.

I'm figuring there's one good site where I can just add the latest version and it has all the ROMs.    The official MAME site confused my dumb ass.

A 55 " 4k TV is around $2200....and a 65" around $3300 .....and up.....if you want the real 4K gaming experience  ::)

They're $1000 less here and the Canadian dollar is shit.

*edit* saw a 55" 4K LG for $500 bucks in the store today.

I use my ps4 as a media center with Plex, Shomi, Netflix etc. Very few games seem to interest me these days.

Saying that, I'm currently in a stacked to hell ableton, singing (I practise singing) with a gargantuan 1gb being used :)

Nope. I personally know 2 PhDs who love videogames. They won scholarships and went to solid American and Canadian universities. One of them loves the Metal Gear Solid saga, just like me. :)

You can be a productive member of society and still like videogames. Nothing wrong at all with that.
MGS 3 is one of mu fave games of all time. I've a Vulcan raven tattoo and a snake one, both enclosed in camouflage

MGS 3 was probably the best overall game I ever played.

The Boss was absolutely epic, and the ending better than any movie.

I beat The End on my first try - took two full hours  to do it.  Kojima took all his developers onto a mountain for days, and made them read books on sniping.  He said if half the people hated that fight, but the other half loved it, he did his job.

I loved MGS one, 2 was Ok, 3 epic, but tolerated four due to the ending.  Haven't had the time for 5 yet.

Phantom Pain is pretty shit.  It starts out great and you think its awesome, then you realize how easy it is and you can even make it easier if you really want to by playing Rambo style.  Then, half way through the game (when Hideo was apparently let go) the game transitions and you actually end up doing THE EXACT SAME LEVELS and MISSIONS a second time.  When I say exact, its exact.  Pointless shit.  So stupid.  Game is rather thin and the AI is pretty stupid.

MGS 3 was the best ever.  Shame they abandoned that style.

MGS 3 was the first one I played and I freaking loved it.

I've played all, with the exception of Ground Zeroes. Right now I'm playing the Phantom Pain. It's absolutely epic.

The only one I didn't like was MGS 2.

Peace Walker was HUGE, and that was a psp game.

Are you talking about side ops? Cause they get repetitive, but main missions don't. But I'm on mission 19 now, I've only been playing for 2 weeks. So I guess that may change.

how is it more "meaningful" or "productive" to watch a tv show or movie, or browse the internet?

i stopped playing games back in 2002 and then started again in 2010, games are better than ever

E

Yeah well some say it develops your reaction times or "fine motor skills" or whatever, but who gives a shit... Games are braindead. How does it benefit you in real Life. After watching your Call of duty playtime you will just get depressed about how much time you spent on that garbage which you could have spent learning things or experiencing things.

I search information on technology, science, politics etc, and I participate in forum discussions and watch some user specific content on youtube. Alot of informative stuff.

I know just about NOTHNG when it comes to these games but a while back I got somewhat involved with this one and found it to be very interesting.

I am sure that the development of today's games are much more involved and complicated but I'd like to hear some comments regarding how much different today's games are than this one.

I thought that the graphics were pretty damn good.

A family member gets hired on occasions to assist in the making of a couple of these games plus the motion pictures that they are based on  ..... if I recall correctly it's called MOTION CAPTURE  work and his most recent 'participation' was in WARCRAFT which I have not had the opportunity to see yet.

That's just about the extent of my gaming experience but on occasions I take a few minutes to watch what others seem to be immensely enjoying within world's that never did exist.

Any thoughts on how virtual reality will be contributing to 'gaming" within the next few years?

Little background for you guys who may want to know.

When production started on MGS V: The Phantom Pain, Kojima studios was riding high. Hideo Kojima was in Konami's good graces and somewhere along the way, he and Konami got into a fight.

By the time the game was released, the studio was basically gutted and everyone knew they were closing it.

Kojima himself had stopped being involved with the day to day operations and things were just on auto pilot.

That's most likely why the beginning started well and turned to shit.

I have to say I'm not into GTA, too much driving. Some games are actually too big. I've the whole set of metal gear solid action figures in boxes. I used very big into all that. Before adulthood eventually caught up with me

Last good GTA was san andreas, which you can get on your phone now.
